'Now what?'
These words had been echoing inside Citrine's mind since she ran away from her battalion. She didn't really feel free. Not that she would even know what that was like, having spent nearly six thousand years near the very bottom of Homeworld's hierarchy. Nonetheless she was fairly certain this wasn't it. Even if she didn't have to deal with the thinly veiled disdain and constant fighting of her old life, she wasn't much better on her own. Sure she could take on one or maybe two corrupted gems on her own, but not more than that. Plus she had heard rumors about rogue gems that had abandoned their posts and were undermining everything that homeworld had worked for on this planet.
Not that she was much better.
Citrine thought back to the transmission with the mysterious pink gem.
Did she really have what it took to be a Crystal Gem?
Not likely, the pink gem seemed to have an awful idealistic view of things. What use could a gem like her be? She was nothing like what she should be, a ruthless warrior whose skill on the battlefield had no equal. Instead she was a useless gem with useless abilities who had only stayed alive as long as she had by sheer luck.
But she had said it didn't matter.
How could it not matter! Literally everything in her life had told her otherwise. The Diamonds ruled, quartzes were soldiers, pearls were servants, and defects like her, they were lucky to even be acknowledged.
As much as she wished she could just keep flying around the world forever, staying in the seagull shape she was currently in just wasn't practical. She was nearly at her limit as it was. Thankfully, the speck of land she'd spotted on the horizon was growing closer with every flap of her wings.
She barely made it to shore, reverting back to her normal shape with a small pop before crashing into the beach several feet below her.
She had taken much harder falls than that and besides, she was already sore everywhere what were a few more bumps and bruises? The sand was pleasantly cool against her skin. The tide was beginning to come in, lapping gently at her feet. She rolled over on to her back and looked up at the sky. The sun was setting somewhere behind her and the sky was tinged a soft purple.
"This wouldn't be such a bad place to rest." She mumbled, letting her eyes slide shut. "Just for a little bit."
