Flurry walked into the forge and flipped the switch. Lava began to move through troughs in the room. This lit the room so that she could see inside. She took off her backpack and sat it down.
"I'm Back!" Flurry shouted. She paused for a while to wait for a response, but none came. "Aww, they're out on another mission again..." She said, thinking aloud. She then walked into the main room and began looking through her bag. She removed a snow globe and a few pieces of coal. She shook the snow globe and sighed as she watched the snow fall. She hardly ever saw her companions anymore since they had started going on recon missions. They used to just hang out in the forge making weapons or chatting about pointless things. She was a support gem and rarely was put in danger.
"...Not even Chal is here..." Flurry mumbled, pulling her knees to her chest and putting her arms around them.
It was some time since Sapphire talked to any Crystal gem, since he was high ranking member of Blue Diamond's court he was free to move among loyal gems, getting information and much more. Right now he was moving to the forge. He was suppose to meet one of his former ruby guards in here, but that was several day ago... he got delayed by important mission and it was doubtful that she will still be here.
Sapphire disliked this place... it was extremely warm... but it was always quite safe.
"Ruby? Are you still here?"
His voice echoed in the corridor but there was no response so he desceded in the core. There was someone there... but not anyone he knew. There were many crystal gems... he met only small portion of them...
He greeted the other gem, putting aside his usual behaviour. Majority of crystal gem disliked when he acted like a royal gem he once were...
Flurry turned to look at Sapphire, surprised that someone else was there. She stood up suddenly, she had not met Sapphire before. Her only knowledge of Sapphires was from sapphires used by homeworld, she had never met a crystal gem Sapphire. Her expression hinted that she was a bit nervous in front of a potential threat. Flurry was never trusting with gems she had not met before, especially when they might be from homeworld.
She raised a finger in the air as she asked her question. "Uhm...are you with Homeworld? Or are you a crystal gem?" Her voice was very high but also soft-spoken. She waited for his response putting her hand on her chin, stretching her other arm down her side.
Sapphire actually smiled, which wasn't something he was doing all that often. Old habbits were hard to get rid off and he was trained to have perfect control over his emotion, showing them only to get some kind of advantage, but not here, not when he was around other Crystal gems.
"That is a silly question, if I were the enemy I would already attack. And I wouldn't be alone, would I? I am actually looking for Ruby, but she is probably long gone..."
Then he realized he might be interrupting something here...
"Am I interrupting you? I could leave if you want..."
He had no idea who she was. His voice was perfectly neutral though. Another old habbit... it served him well on many occasions.
Something about the Sapphire's smile bothered Flurry, but she was always apprehensive around strangers. She decided that the Sapphire must not smile often for him to have such a weird smile, so she tried to be friendly back.
"...well I guess that makes sense.." Flurry mumbled quietly. "A ruby?... well...I don't think that one is here... if they are then I haven't seen them" She said, shaking the snow globe in her hands. The snow effect still made her smile even though she had done it five times by now.
"Oh...no...you're not interrupting me. I'm not really doing anything but waiting for the others to get back..." She said, looking up at him. She produced a cloud pillow that floated in the air. Hopping onto it she laid on her chest, floating about the room on the cloud. "If you think that your ruby is here... I could help you look..."
"We were supposed to meet here several days ago... but I delayed... she knows very well that this sort of things happen to me all the time, so she probably left. It wasn't all that important anyway... but she is an old friend of mine..."
It was quite some time since he last saw any of his former guardians...
"I am pretty sure she left... but I do appreciate the offer."
He smiled once more, this time it was much more genuine. It was refreshing to be speaking with someone without being called "grand clarity" or something like that.
"I do appologize for my statement earlier. Your question wasn't silly at all. Being a crystal gem could be really dangerous sometimes... me and my guardians joined this noble cause few years ago... and since then I never regretted my choice."
Flurry looked at him and smiled happily. She found it easy to speak to someone who looked nice. "Yeah, it is very hard! But I like it... whenever I do my missions I know that I made someone happy... Just the thought of that makes all of the danger worth it!" She said, a bit happier than she was before. Now that she wasn't mumbling it was more noticeable that she had a British accent. "Where would your friend have gone? I don't think that they could have gone far in a few days..."
Hopping off of her cloud she walked up to him. She pedaled her feet as she waited for further information. With nothing to do, and someone nice to help out she couldn't stay at the forge. "I'm not very strong in battle, I'm a support gem you see... but my cloud is good because I can cover pretty much any kind of terrain! I can help if you want." She said, smiling.
Sapphire didn't like most of his missions, since they usually required acting like a loyal gem to get some important piece of information, but he knew it was neccessary. He could do something, that other couldn't so he had to do it. Nobody was forcing him, but he felt like he had to.
"I have no idea... she has her missions too. But I know we will see each other again when she is finished... and if she took warp pad she could be anywhere. But as I previously said, it isn't important."
It was really nice that she wanted to help him.
"I can understand that. I was a diplomat when I served the Homeworld. I wasn't made to fight with my fists, but with my mind, defeating enemies with diplomacy."
Flurry raised an eyebrow. "Diplomancy? What is that?" She asked saying the word wrong, not knowing advanced words such as that. Apparently some gems were made not being as educated. She pedaled both feet at once now, bouncing up and down. "Is it some super powerful move that you can use to beat the homeworld gems? Can I do it? Can you teach me?" She asked with wide eyes. The Cloud reappeared under her and she sat on it crossing her legs.
"I bet only your kind of gem can do it..." She said, sighing. "All I can do is make these clouds and a healing bubble thing, but I can only make the bubble once. I can't even summon my weapon, some gems think that I can't even summon one at all..." She said, looking at the floor.
"Diplomacy isn't for fighting. It's the art of talking... you can accomplish a lot by just talking. When I served Blue Diamond I was being sent to distant words, usually ones that were a potential threat and I was talking to their leaders, convincing them to surrender... or to do whatever Blue Diamond needed. Sometimes I offered them something valuable, sometimes I threatened them with the power of Gem Empire... but I usually got the job done, one way or the other..."
It felt like such a long time ago, even though it was just few short years...
"When it came to fighting I am not very useful myself... as long as I was doing my job correctly I didn't require fighting skills... on Earth things are... different though."
He never needed to fight before he came to planet Earth... since then he fought several times...
"That sounds cool! It's like fighting without hurting anybody!" Flurry said, excitedly, balling her fists. She hopped onto her cloud again and floated over to Sapphire. "Since I can't fight very well I would be really good at that! If I could learn how to diplomancy then I could be a huge help to the team even though I can't fight!" She said, pumping her fists. "Teach me the art of talking-to-gems-so-that-they-don't-wanna-hurt-me!"
She watched him curiously as he mentioned Diplomacy being impossible on earth. He explained how on earth he had to fight many times. "I don't know why it's not the same... I really think that we can talk to them anyway! I mean...they're our friends right? They're gems like us! This should be easier right? Maybe if we join forces we can end the gem war!" Little stars appeared in her eyes as she told him her plan.
"In a way you're correct. One can achieve victory without unnecessary violence. But I'm not sure if I could teach you... it is very delicate and not easy to master. You have to have a complete control over your emotions, not showing them if needed or show only what you need to show, often it is completely different from how you feel in reality... and I am not sure how aplicable it is at our situation. If so called "loyal" gem knew I was a crystal gem they would try and shatter me, diplomacy or not..."
He explained as well as he was able. He always dispised zealotry, but he was blind when he thought he is not fiercly loyal to Blue Diamond, the realization that he was also a zealot in a way was quite shocking... and, unfortunately, there were some zealots among Crystal gems too...
"I am not sure if they are our friends... the very notion of thinking for oneself is alien to them... they are devoted only to their diamonds... we are too dangerous, because we disrupting status quo that was in place for eons..."
"Well, I like to think of them as friends... because if all that decides who a friend or enemy is their way of thinking... then that would be really scary. If suddenly my friend were to change their way of thinking...that would make them my enemy... and I wouldn't be able to trust anyone. So, I like to think that just because someone has a different way of thinking doesn't mean that they aren't my friend..." Flurry mumbled sadly, in her soft-spoken voice.
"You're right...diplomancy isn't for me.." Flurry said, saying the word wrong again. "I just with there was some way that I could be helpful to my friends... They never take me on missions because I would just be a burden to them..." She looked at the floor sadly, her cloud started raining.
"I respect your opinion. I would very much want to see it the way you do, but unfortunately I can't. But I hope you could retain your way of thinking. If everyone thought the way you do, there would be no conflict on Earth."
He said. The sad truth that thinking of "loyal" gems and Crystal gems were almost incompatible. One believed in the flawless perfection of the matriarchs, the other believed in freedom...
"Friends are like that... they are trying to protect you, not noticing, that it is hurting you. But at least you know they care. And didn't you say you're a healer? Healers are rare among gems... it is skill few possess... how could that be not helpful?"
"You would think that I could help...but they just don't let me! What if one of them gets hurt, I won't be there to help... I`ll just here doing nothing... what good is a healer if they can't ever heal anyone!?"She said, angrily clenching her fists. Thunder roared from within her cloud. She looked at Sapphire.
"Hey! I just now got at idea!" With that, her cloud turned back white. "Maybe we can go on missions together! You said that you had to fight a bunch now that you're on earth, so maybe I could heal you when you fight! If not, I could take you places with my cloud! It doesn't fly too high, but it's kinda fast and if you needed to cross something dangerous you wouldn't have to walk over it! It's much better than hanging out here!" Flurry beamed at him.
