Name: Variscite
Appeared Gender: Female
Appeared Age: 22
Gemstone: Variscite
Gemstone Location: on the back of Variscite's neck
Faction: Homeworld
Corrupted: N
(If Corrupted)Monster Form:
Appearance:
Variscite has a light green, smooth complexion. She has a simple, yet attractive face with a petite body type. The gem's hair has a forest green hue with triangle patterns within. The bangs are long and her hair stops just before reaching shoulder length. Her eyes are round, large circles, with two circular pupils (similar to Pearl's).
Variscite wears a combat worthy, one-piece jump suit. The material appears to be of a certain rubber fabric. The suit has a V-neck decorated with a royal purple. This same purple color forms an X which is split into a upper v and lower v by a violet-blue filling. At the tip of the mirrored vs, the Yellow Diamond symbol is displayed as the center piece of her uniform. Just below the separated X is a strange symbol; a combination of a C and a G, only the C is reversed to enter the space occupied by the G. This is abnormal since C and G are human letters. The rest of her suit is mostly black. Variscite has elbow and knee pads with the Yellow Diamond mark shape. As for her appendages, Variscite has white rings slightly past her shoulders and two more sets of white rings on her forearms and on her wrists. The Yellow Diamond marks also characterize the back of her hands, the tips of her military style boots, and her heels. The suit covers her hands.
Personality: Variscite seems to be a shy and reserved gem. Her reasons for insecurity depend mostly on past experiences, but also on her fear of "failing" a conversation. However, this does not stop her from going out and speaking with others normally. Variscite is somewhat overbearing about those who she considers to be her friends, so much so that she will go from politely supporting them to ruthlessly torturing anyone who wrongs them, despite her hate for violence. Variscite can either appear polite, but shy when talking to someone without mentally preparing to do so first, or seem ice cold and introverted. This is because, although she is an introverted character, she cares deeply about her impression on others. Variscite is also awkward, but not so much so that it is comical or annoying. This gem is also bothered by bodily contact, such as a hug or even a pat on the back. Despite feeling this way, Variscite longs to be held affectionately.
Variscite has two distinct parts of her personality, one of which comes from her inherent feelings toward other beings, being that her love for them is disturbingly strong. It is a friendly, kind attitude. The second was concocted from past experiences. Variscite has a sadistic edge to her personality. The passionate side is generally reflected towards her friends or those she cares for the most, while the other is dealt to her enemies.
Variscite tends to be solemn and serious in nature. She is a very intelligent individual who enjoys reading books on her free time. Her favorite novels are dark tragedies. Variscite's robotic expressions rarely change, but it would be a misunderstanding to think of her as emotionless. Variscite's emotions germinate like a vortex inside her soul, tearing her apart. She wishes she could be set free from all her sorrow and despair by "letting it out" as everyone else does, but does not want to burden them with her troubles. She has a strong, but tragic pretense. This pretense stems from her desire to "protect everyone." Variscite believes that if anyone suffers in the world, it is her fault since she technically could have done something about it. For this reason, she is dedicated to becoming stronger and placing any pain her friends feel upon herself. However, despite her pretense, Variscite is very weak and unable to take on that much pain. Because of her extreme decisions and forced personality, she is mentally unstable and may soon "topple over."
Likes/Dislikes: Likes: Chess, Hot beverages, Strength, Herself, Mercy, Life, Books, Friends, The color black, Loyalty, Control, Knowledge, Struggle, Conversations, Honesty, Change, Things rejected by other people, Bodily contact, Affection, Creativity, Heavy Metal or rock music with "good" lyrics and contemplated outlooks on life, Worldviews, Diversity, Organization
Dislikes: Violence, Cruelty, The color pink, Weakness, Power abusers, Laziness, Incompetence, Imperfection, Men, Tight spaces, Bodily contact, Weeaboos, Cheese, Chaos, Lack of order, Stupidity, Bubbly attitudes, Pain, Herself, An uncontrollable situation
Fears: Failure, Being alone, Inappropriate touches to display affection, Laboratories, dying
Weapon: Variscite has a Grappling Hook. Her weapon has a very strange method of obtaining power. It "levels up" so to say. The levels range from 1-30. Every time the grappling hook levels up it slightly increases in power, sometimes more than others. However this will only upgrade similar to how Pearl, Garnet, and Amethyst had their equipment upgraded by Bismuth. Although this will be without a Bismuth's aid. The more Variscite trains with her weapons, the stronger they will become (but lv 30 will probably never be achieved in the roleplay as leveling up takes a very large amount of time.) The grappling hook launcher is approximately 12 in" long and has a built in blade which also extends 12 in". The grapple's extension at lv 1 would be 5 ft. currently it is lv 12 with a 15 ft. extension. At this time, the hook has 4 spokes, each with multiple, small groves. The place where the spokes meet is convex rather than concave. It forms a jagged, but refined, spear-like point. This point exists in order to penetrate the victim's defenses. A simple grappling hook would be far to under developed to serve as a good weapon.
The max power her weapon can have (there may be further development as necessary in the roleplay) is at lv 30. The grappling hook has seven 14 in" long spokes with very jagged curves. The point becomes a short, 2 ft. long spear-shaped device. The launcher becomes 2 ft. long with 2 ft. long blade extensions. The grappling hook's extension becomes 40 ft. long. I would like to remind you this is an absurdly powerful form that Variscite will most likely never reach. As powerful as these abilities seem, an elite gem would probably beat her. Any fusion would.
Variscite can preform acrobatic movements with her gear such as kicking her opponents while swinging from a grappling hook or pulling a victim up on a grappling hook in a triangle choke.
Ability 1: Variscite is capable of ice manipulation. She can cause ice to levitate in a similar manner to the way the peridot in Steven Universe is able to cause metal to levitate with her "metal powers." The power is seldom applicable to an actual "fight" as Variscite can only manipulate a the volume of ice that could be contained in a human body. This gem cannot change the shape of the ice either. Perhaps Veriscite could rearrange large snowflakes to make and throw a snowball with precision without even touching it, or send ice cubes from an ice tray into someone's drink. Although her ice manipulation could technically be used for combat purposes, it is more of a comedy relief power.
Ability 2: Variscite can transform her holographic body into a liquid-solid state with only her gem remaining normal. This proves useful when hiding or getting through secure areas. Variscite enters her form in one post. On the second post, she can stay in the liquid form if she wishes, or return to normal. In the third post, she must solidify whether she wants to or not. Unfortunately, Variscite's physical form is very fragile in this state. Her gem is also more prone to shattering. For this reason Variscite hides her gem in the liquid manifestation of her body, however a simple punch to her liquid form would cause her immense pain, in turn forcing her gem to resurface to be shattered. Five posts after using her power, Variscite is capable of melting back into her liquid form if she so desires. This form is evidently not suitable for combat whatsoever and is only accessed when Variscite is either absolutely desperate to escape, or certain that no one will find her.

History: Variscite first came to exist in the Prime Kindergarten. She came out late and at an unfortunate time. During an Anti-Homeworld skirmish against the Kindergarden. Several gems were taken captive. Variscite was told to keep quite and not ask any questions. This escapade with the Crystal Gems was short lived as a band of humans, unsure what these alien invaders were, struck out in fear. Although humans are far less developed then gems, they were able defeat these outsiders. Once more Variscite was held hostage, only this time by humans. She was brought to a human research facility with the purpose of learning more about the gems. The laboratory had the human resistance logo on it. The sign portrayed a G and a reversed C that caved inwards towards the G (not the CG initials for the Crystal Gems). A certain doctor with the alias "Father" took ownership of her. He had seven other gems within his custody, but Variscite was the most extraordinary and interesting gem to him. To this day Variscite wonders why.
When around his fellow humans, Father would always treat his eight test subjects as his adopted children. He cared for them with such love, yet when he was alone with them, this doctor was far different from his passionate façade. He did not care about the other humans or anything but his own survival, their was only one thing Father wanted to do; that was hurting others. He used his equipment to enter the minds of his victims in order to "learn more about the composition of gem tissue" (find out what his children hated the most and torture them with it). A Gem's manifested body is a hologram, and so it could only take a certain extent of physical pain before retreating back into the gem. For this reason most of the suffering was geared to mentally deteriorate the consciousness. Faced head on, the pain was enough to drive anyone insane. Because that doctor, no, that fiend could not resist his twisted, sadistic desires, he tortured the first seven "test subjects" until they lost the will to live and died from mental stress.
Variscite was not so lucky. She also lost the will to live and tried to die, but had such a strong gem she was unable to kill herself. Father could never drive her insane either. For this reason she was his favorite toy, one that could never brake; his favorite child. For countless days, he wasted her. Despite his human appearance, Father was noticeably "inhuman" Variscite noted. One day Father messed up. He forgot to close the energy inhibitor he used to keep Variscite inside her gem so he could inject it with harmful gasses that gave nightmares, hallucinations , and strange feelings of hands, touching and wriggling around inside her. Variscite emerged and killed Father. Despite everything he had done to her, she felt no hatred for him, because he had always told her he did what he did because he loved her. Variscite wept bitterly after his passing. The memories of her existence were so terrible, to much for a mortal mind to bear, so she "forgot" about them with the aid of Father's equipment and left the hellish laboratory.
Variscite lived her new life as she would have without experiencing the horror she had been forced to endure. She began searching for answers, wondering who she was and why she existed. A band of Homeworld gems found her and noticed the Yellow Diamond mark on her torso. She spoke with authorities who filled her in on her purpose as a Homeworld gem. In time, Variscite was dispatched with four other gems: a jasper, two rubies, and a peridot for a "scouty-fighty mission." The jasper was relatively strong for a jasper. She was technically leader of this strange, mismatched group. The peridot would pilot their ship. She was in charge whenever the jasper was not around. The five of them were surprisingly elite for your average group of combat trained gems. They were assigned to the corruption. They "cleansed" their region of corrupted gems regularly. When one arouse that was to strong for all five to take on at once, which was rare, elites from the Yellow Diamond or even the White Diamond branch came to dispose of it.Variscite suggested that they all fuse together to beat the strong ones, but was laughed at for it. After all, hetro-gem fusions were considered inappropriate and were frowned upon by the Diamond Authorities. They would attack all at once on to ambush their opponents with precision and carful strategic planning, something Peridot always stressed. On average, their combined combat performance was roughly a bit weaker than the average performance of the rebel, Rose Quartz's Pearl.
Soon, Variscite got to know her new friends very well. Jasper insisted on being addressed as "Funnel Cakes", some cool earth word she liked the sound of. She was furious when Peridot would try to address her as "jasper." Peridot, of course, was picky about being addressed by rank and title. The two rubies made constant jokes and snickered at Peridot when she became angry. Variscite, against Peridot's wishes, was nicknamed "flush blush" because she would easily become embarrassed when trying to socialize. The name did not make much sense, but Variscite simply appreciated being part of a group and having friends. She loved her friends, all of them, so much; their personality. She lived everyday with them to the fullest; she never wanted it to end. But as a beautiful flower shines radiantly only for a short while, before Winter comes to kill that radiance, so must the beautiful things of this world eventually rot away.
A powerful quartz soldier under the authority of the Crystal Gems commanded a small scout group of a dozen and a half more gems. Variscite noted that the commander had the appearance of a male figure. The eighteen gems quickly surrounded the small band of Homeworld gems, prepared to shatter them. But their commander held up his hand, stopping them. He then preceded to fight all five Homeworld gems at once. To their surprise, he won. After defeating them he noticed Variscite. The Crystal Gem commander looked at her with the same detestable look that "Father" had given her, only far worse. The gem introduced himself as Chalcedony. He asked for Variscite's name, and after having been given it "returned the favor" by giving her his philosophy; "All the problems of the universe stem from an individual's lack of ability." The reason he was able to defeat Variscite and all the other gems was because they "lacked ability." With this he forced Variscite to watch as he shattered Peridot. "It is the right of the strong to do as they please with the weak." Chalcedony said he would be merciful towards her and let her choose to come with him and be in his army or to watch the remaining three friends she had die. Although Variscite could not trust Chalcedony, she believed that at least her friends might have a chance at survival if she was shattered in their place. Against their wishes, she accepted his offer.
To Variscite's surprise she was taken to "work" with equipment very similar to Father's. In fact, it was the same equipment. All Chalcedony turned out to be, was another sadistic freak. When the other Crystal gems were gone he tortured her so viciously that the memories with Father came back to her. Although, Chalcedony was far more terrible then he was. He chose Variscite because he was particularly fond of her, her fair face, her smooth body. fusion is a choice. So Chalcedony tampered with Variscite's mind to the extent she unconsciously signified the fusing. In this way he "forced" her to fuse with him. They would fuse with each other for short periods of time so the feeling would be continually fresh. Soon after the fusion ended, Chalcedony would "ask" to fuse again. This went on for countless more days. Variscite wanted to die now more than ever. Unlike Father, she had learned to hate Chalcedony, no, to loath him. While they were fused, he would cause her mind to feel a miserable, tickling sensation. Eventually Chalcedony "opened up" to her. He told her how he had come to love hurting others. He had, in fact, been placed in the same laboratory as Variscite had. He had been severely tortured by Father because his gem was not easily shattered. One day Chalcedony tried thinking with a different perspective. He pretended he was the one dealing out the torture. Soon he could not remember whether he was being hurt or if he was the one hurting. The doctor forgot to conceal his gem the same way he forgot to conceal Variscite's, and then their roles were switched in reality. Chalcedony dealt pain onto Father, but soon became bored and left him there. Now he was the strong one. Variscite took all of his words to heart.
The true breaking point for her was when Chalcedony chose to bring the two rubies from her squad before her. Variscite was furious to see that he had not freed her friends at all. Her sacrifice was in vain and no one could ever come to save her. Chalcedony forced Variscite to choose between the two of them. He would shatter one and let the other live. Variscite was unable to sentence one of her friends to death, and so both were shattered. Variscite realized that her lack of ability, her weakness to choose between one of the rubies caused her to shatter both. After all, she could have saved one of them; both if she was strong enough to shatter Chalcedony. It was all her fault. Then, like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly, Variscite transformed. Her personality changed. A circumstance arose where she could break free. She fought against Chalcedony, a tense one on one battle, and won. She cracked her torturer's gem and left him to die. Despite her urge to end her life, something had changed. Variscite now had the strong desire to survive for her friends. She liberated the Jasper who admitted he lacked the ability to save his friends from Chalcedony. Variscite kindly told him not to worry. She would protect everyone now.
Now two years have passed since Variscite was first formed. She is currently traveling alone, eliminating corrupted gems whenever she sees them. Variscite loses few battles, but when she does, this wretched gem curses herself for being to weak and strives to be stronger. Variscite has adapted Chalcedony's philosophy and beliefs. She added the Laboratory GC logo to her uniform so she would never forget the cruelty of Father, who she now realizes only wanted to hurt her. She strives to protect the Jasper and other gems she considers to be her friends. She has left them and went on a lonely adventure to get stronger. Variscite still considers herself to be a Homeworld gem, and because of Chalcedony's influence, she has a negative view of Crystal gems and will shatter them on site. She chooses to do whatever she thinks will make her stronger. Variscite is no main character, but if a story were to be told of her life, it would certainly be a tragedy.
Character Arcs: Variscite is mentally unstable and will likely one day either change or cease to exist entirely. Variscite may one day learn to trust her friends and not take on all the pain the world has to offer by herself. Variscite may learn to understand crystal gems. Variscite may betray Homeworld. Variscite will most likely side with other gems to fulfill her purpose. When the full war commences, Variscite will likely choose a side and use the battle as an opportunity to become stronger.
