Several minutes after Sulfur spoke, Howlite finally worked up the courage to talk. "Who was it? That you're singing about? I'm sorry I shouldn't of asked that. I just wanted to know who exactly was the one you lost? Whoever it is must've been important to you." Then it hit him. Whoever this gem was, they shared a connection. This gem was Sulfur's version of Pearl. He now understood why Sulfur never talked about it. He knew that if he lost Pearl, he'd probably never even speak his name to anyone ever again.
"Her name was Emerald. She was the only gem who protected me when Homeworld had stabbed me in the back. I wasn't always a murderous gem like both of us are now Howlite, I didn't just come out like this... I used to be a very intelligent and diplomatic gem... they then invented a Sapphire, a gem who could see into the future. No more need for my kind after that so they melted us down... I was hunted for no reason at all..." Sulfur said, standing up. "Well all of my friends turned against me, back when I used to have them. The only one who stuck with me was Emerald... but just guess where she is now. Why am I here... when she is gone?"
Howlite stared at Sulfur. "So you're not like me in that respect. You developed your dark passenger. You weren't born with it. But at the same time we both know what it's like to exist without purpose." Then he smirked. "Maybe this is why we are such great 'affiliates' because we both know that void. Only difference is I was born with it and you developed it. But it's the same void nonetheless. We are almost like twins. We're two halves of the same coin. We need to stick together. Without each other... Who do we have?"
Sulfur knew that Howlite seemed fond of him, but he felt that what Howlite was saying was inaccurate. There was no polite way to say this.
"Howlite, we are not the same. The difference on the origin of our darkness is a huge one... I survived hundereds of years massacring gems alone. The reason we work together is because I'ts easier to survive when you have a larger force. I chose you because we have similar views on shattering, that way I can do what I like without having you flake like the rest." Sulfur said. "You know, I actually feel like I have the most purpose now, I feel like I am avenging her. You simply are a dark gem... you were dark from the moment you were created."
Howlite wasn't sure whether or not to be offended by Sulfur's remark. "I... I suppose. Look, what happened to you is not my business. All I'm saying is, I'm here for you." He saw a bird flu overhead. He drew his rifle and shotgun it down. "I'll go get that later." Howlite wished that there was some way he could get a little closer with Sulfur. Sulfur claimed that they were alike but this was obviously not the case. Howlite knew nothing about Sulfur really. He knew nothing about his past other than Emerald and his suffering. He knew none of his other contacts. It seemed Sulfur knew more about Howlite then Howlite knew about Sulfur.
"That is all you can do Howlite... I appreciate your assistance..." Sulfur said quietly. The crash of waves could be heard again, the calls of birds however were quieter now. The birds had flown away from them due to Howlite's shot. It was much quieter now, Sulfur seemed to become more focused with all of the noises gone. The whole time he had been distracted by his memories.
"No, by all means fetch your bird, you are aiming to catch your earth animals, you can do that now. I was just about finishing up." Sulfur said, smiling at Howlite. Sulfur's smile quickly faded. He walked toward Howlite. "Howlite, who do you think I am? and... Howlite... do you trust me?"
Howlite lit up when Sulfur said get the bird. "Oh goody!" Then just before he ran after it Sulfur spoke. "Who do I think you are? I think you're a gem who knows suffering. A gem who's spilled enough blood to sail a ship on. And yes I trust you Sulfur. But know this... There's more mystery to you... Then even I dare ask." Then he bolted off after the bird. Judging by the mass of the bird, factor in the distance of the shot, factor in for wind, bullet drop, and speed of his round, it would've landed just next to his ship. And there it was! He held it in his hands. Then he chopped off it's head and placed it in the trophy room of his ship. Then he ran back to Sulfur. "Done!"
"You trust me, even though I am mysterious to you..." Sulfur mused as Howlite returned. "You are wise to not ask about my mysteries, as I am comfortable I will teach them to you. Still, I believe that you are not wise to put your trust in one who you do not know."
Sulfur floated into the air, moving around Howlite in a circle. His movement pattern would remind one of a ghost as he seemed to drift around the gem. He finally stopped in front of Howlite, as if standing, only a foot off of the floor.
"I am not suggesting that you should not trust me Howlite, as I am currently all that you have..." Sulfur began. "I am only suggesting that you should not give this sort of trust to anyone else. Many gems will do whatever it takes to get their hands on a renegade such as yourself..."
"What can I say? I'm irresistible. I can't help but wonder something. You always ask what I see in you. My question is, what'd you see in a worthless defect like me? You could have a normal Howlite who's superior to me in every way. Yet you choose me. Why?" Howlite didn't get it. Back on Homeworld every gem who worked with him asked him to be replaced with a true Howlite so that it will be flawless. He never understood why Sulfur ever wanted anything to do with him. Sure he liked to shatter but lots of gems do. That couldn't be the only reason could it?
"I've told you countless times Howlite my dear affiliate!" Sulfur said, leaning on a palm tree. "A 'normal howlite' is a dull creature that cannot think for itself. A normal howlite simply follows orders from the diamonds without questioning them. This dull attitude cost me Emerald... You on the other hand, due to your defect, seem able to think for yourself."
"Now let me answer your question with another question..." Sulfur said, floating closely to Howlite and eyeing him with one eye. "Why would I, a gem against the diamond authority, wronged by them robbed by them and hunted by them, have any interest in just any hum drum Howlite. You are a superior breed, your flaws perfect you. As I have said before, even a diamond must be cut many times before it is perfected. Never underestimate the mind Howlite. That is where your potential lies."
Hearing Sulfur's words made Howlite smile. "No one's ever shown me such kindness before." A tear rolled down his cheek but he wiped it away hoping Sulfur didn't catch it. "We're gonna go far. Just the 4 of us. Speaking of which... When will I be meeting the others? You still haven't introduced. It would seem terrible to keep them waiting. Do they even know about me? Or is that something you haven't shared with them yet?" Howlite thought about Sulfur telling his contacts about Howlite. What would Sulfur have told them if he did? What would they think of him?
"Kind? Howlite do you remember I have no soul? I only have you on my team because I can see you for what you are. Of course I'm sure it feels nice to be valued, but don't mistake it for kindness. I don't call you a friend for a reason. I don't limit myself with relationships. It's what keeps me unlimited." Sulfur saw Howlite shed the tear from the corner of his eye, but it was impossible for anyone else to be sure Sulfur had seen it. "I have called a meeting with the other two, after our meeting with the Smoky Quartz I will bring you to them."
"I briefly mentioned you, yes. I fear that they might not like to hear about your tendencies, keep those a secret until they come into play." Sulfur said. "You will be joining a team called the Broken Gems. I am currently it's leader, but we are all a Team of gems who have been rejected yet through our broken husks we can seek vengeance on those who have wronged us."
Howlite straightened up. "I'll try not to make that mistake again." He then smiled. "Now let's have some fun!" He started dancing in the sand. Then Howlite had an idea. "I think I know how to loosen you up." He drew his rifle. He started to sing, "it's a beautiful day outside. Birds are singing, flowers are blooming. On days like this, gems like us, should be burning in hell. Turn around boss, it'd be a crime, if I had to go back on the promise that I made for you so don't step over that line. Or else friend you're gonna have a bad time. But gems like you don't play by the rules and gems like me it ain't easy to be played for fools. So let's go, let the air get chiller." He pointed his gun at Sulfur. "Let's go dirty Rebel killer!"
Sulfur raised an eyebrow, confused by the gesture. He couldn't tell what Howlite was doing, often Howlite would sing while torturing a gem, but there was no gem. Either Howlite was simply singing for fun, or he was challenging him to a duel. Behind his back three blades burrowed into the sand, although Sulfur's body blocked them from view. Sulfur paced about to the beat of the song, wondering what his ally was up to. Levitating in the air he occasionally turned in the air, taking traditional dancing to a new level.
Sulfur felt that it would be in poor taste to sing along to a parody of a parody, so he decided to confirm his suspicious instead.
"Are you challenging me to a spar Howlite?" Sulfur said.
Howlite grinned. He lunged at Sulfur and kept singing. "Go ahead and try to hit me if you're able. Hope you've figured out that Mercy's off the table. I'm sure you'll get really sick of trying, but I think you're just mad you'll keep poofing." He spun around Sulfur. "You're not gonna win. We'll be here together. Fighting on this island sand forever. I know you'll just come back each time I beat ya but I'll always be right back here to meet ya." He then got into a defensive stance. "I know you're made ooooof loooove. Loooove. Loooove."
