Variscite rested under a tree while rain poured down outside. She was under a shelter crafted from tree bark, wood, tar, large leaves, and mud. Very seldomly did any rain make its way in. She turned her head to rest, while gems do not need sleep, they can still be recharged from doing the ritual. It is still important. Variscite was exhausted, allowing her strength to return while she sleeped. However Variscite was always semiconscious when sleeping, a trick she learned from a former comrade. Her body was relaxed, but ready for ambush.
While Variscite lied there, she pondered what her next move might be. Howlite would not likely let her rest, would he. Not likely. As long as he was out there, she was in constant danger, too much danger to handle. Attempting to poof him might even be better than letting him lurk about. However if it even was possible to poof the powerful gem again, he could come right back out after a few hours. Should I gouge out his eyes and wound his physical body to the extent that it is defective but not entirely eliminated, tying him to a tree and leaving him to rot until the two remaining days are over. She rolled onto the other side of the leafy bed, waiting to see what morning would bring.
Howlite kept to his word and didn't strike till morning. Once the sun rose he shouted. "Hope you got you're rest! It's round 2!" He then found a vantage point and drew his rifle. As he sighted in his scope, he had an idea. He was gonna have some fun. Instead of shooting directly at his student, he fired around her. He fired 3 rounds. Each one less than an inch away from her. He paused in between shots to make sure they didn't hit her. "You've outdone yourself yesterday Varis. Let's hope you do the same today!" Then he retreated back. He knew she wouldn't fail. He had a lot of confidence in her which stemmed from their first encounter. When he failed to break her spirit, that was when she earned his respect.
Variscite frantically attempted to dodge all the bullets, coming so fast she could not prdict them. None hit her though. Intentional. "So ... today's round two, huh..." Variscite had all the recourses she needed... or did she? The calculating gem turned around, a mental attempt to convince her she was ready to improvise with anything Howlite threw at her.
Suddenly an ant-like corrupted gem pounced on top of her. She turned his head until she heard a cracking sound. But Variscite chose not to poof it, not yet. An idea came to her mind, a twisted idea that made her chuckle slightly. The enlightened gem dragged the wounded creature along as it tried to bite her with its four pairs of mandibles.
Finally, Variscite figured it was distracting her too much and poofed it for now. She used a rock/wooden, improvised shovel to hollow out many holes in the ground around her. Very similar to Howlite's pit. After a few hours, she had dug out twenty six manholes. Then, the tired gem sat down to rest for a while, preparing for what she was about to do.
Howlite watched curiously as Variscite dug her manholes. What could she be doing? Were they meant for him? He studied them for a moment before planning his next move. He couldn't figure out what she was trying to do. Good. That meant she was learning. Soon like him, she would master the fine art of unpredictability. Judging from the position of the sun, it must've been around noon or so. Interesting. Already a day and a half has gone by and she was still going. She was determined he'd give her that. He decided that the best course of action would be to determine the function of the manholes before blindly assaulting his student.
Variscite went off in another direction. As she progressed, occasional corrupted gems came to her. She fought and poofed them, keeping their gems. While this transpired, Variscite went on a quest for iron, but ever on the lookout for Howlite. With great effort, Variscite broke some of the crystal rocks and combined them with maliable matirials to make a picaxe. Variscite used this picaxe, which she had to remake several times when it broke or when she made a mistake, to obtain large quantities of iron ore. Variscite was drenched in sweat, but struck up a fire. She pasted rocks together with the tar of the island and made the small fire into a furnace. Now the trick was to turn up the heat. Variscite took apart more crystal pieces and used them to reflect sunlight into the already consentrated heat. The exhausted gem proceeded to add flammable substances such as dry weeds and liquid tar to build up the heat. Eventually Variscite had to replace the rocky protection with crystal, since the rocks melted. Finally, Variscite was able to mold the ore. Like a black smith she used personally crafted tools to create long, iron bars. She also made several different weapons while she was at it.
The sun had moved in the sky. Now it was time for Variscite to return for her original shelter location. She held up a few iron bars, planning on taking multiple trips, and headed back.
While Variscite was heading back to her shelter, Howlite was inside waiting for her. "Just checking on your progress. Wow 2nd night. I'm surprised you've lasted this long on the first go. I'm proud of you. So tell you what, I'm giving you a choice. You can either let me retreat and survive one more day. Or if you think you have what it takes you can attack me and if you win, we'll leave immediately. It's up to you." He paused to see what she would do. Would she fight or would she survive for the last day? That was a tough question. He looked at her with a smile. "Whatever you choose, I want you to know that I'm proud of you." He then sighed as he awaited her choice.
Variscite considered her options, she would most likely lose to Howlite if she attacked him in her current state. While leaving early sounded nice... she still had some work to do. Whether this was Variscite's own stubbornness to not allow her hard work go to waste, or her simply wanting not take the "easy" path out of the island challenge, she did not know. Variscite only craved one thing at this moment, victory. She had made up her mind.
"I would like to let you retreat. I still have something I wish to do here... Thank you, Howlite. I intend to make you even more proud with my performance tomorrow." She bowed briefly.
It's not that she wanted to stay on the island in danger, just the hope that she could show Howlite how competent she really was, despite how she felt. After all, Variscite only offered to join the Broken gems because she felt they were all stronger than her. She truly was weak...
"I'm sure I will be. Have a good night. Rest while you can. I'll be back at dawn." He then left the shelter and returned to the jungles. Variscite had truly proven her worth that day. Rather than take the easy way out, she chose to do the whole thing. That was true strength. He began to grow fond of this gem. As if she were his kid. Right now he felt like a proud parent who just witnessed a child's first step. He'd let her rest. After all, the next day was her final day. Then they'd leave. He'd then boast to Sulfur about her triumphs. Variscite was probably the only gem who Howlite was proud of.
As soon as Howlite left the compound, Variscite set down the metal bars and went back to get more. She retrieved the remaining bars after several trips. Finally everything was transferred.
As night fell upon the island, Variscite took the iron bars and pasted them to the tops of all the pits, and then she slept, always wary.
When day came, she decided it was time to 'wake up' the corrupted gems. She let the creatures lose inside the cages she had created. Thirty eight gems clawed at their prisons, drying desperately to escape. There were twenty eight cages for the beasts, some having more than one corrupt gem within, including Howlite's pit. Variscite proceeded by scraping a rock against some chalk-like substance for the next hour. The creatures were driven insane by the torture; their minds, unhinged. In their madness, the beasts clawed their eyes out. Variscite grinned at her twisted army. When the corrupted gems had regenerated their eyes, Variscite released them from their prisons. The monsters came at Variscite, eager for revenge. However, their minds were to warped to discern friend from foe. Variscite took off, heading for where she thought Howlite may reside.
Howlite was resting against a tree when suddenly he heard a sound. Something was coming. Something big. He switched to his Tracker Vision and saw a huge signature of corruptions. They were being led by Variscite! Howlite wasn't afraid of them. He had things for that. He drew his rifle and took a breath. Then he fired one of his cold shots. The bullet went forward but then suddenly curved, taking out 2 corruptions at once. He then reloaded another round. Luckily he had a lot of distance between him and the monsters. He just kept picking them off 2 or 3 at a time using his cold shots. He managed to kill half of them. Then things got bad. He pulled the trigger and heard a click. He had ran out of bullets. "Time for plan B I guess." He then took off, hopping from tree to tree attempting to rush at Variscite's army. She had done all that. All of that. He was so proud of her. He then looked up atthe sky. Noon. Which meant only 6 more hours. The problem was, Variscite believed the predator could be hunted by another predator like her. But what she failed to realize was, Howlite was an Apex Predator. He had no natural predators. He was top of the food chain and she was going to learn that the hard way.
Variscite stood in shock as Howlite so easily eliminated half of her army. Impossible! Even she could not have taken on that many at once. Calm down. Calm down. This isn't over, not just yet.
As the rest of Variscite's gem army came for Howlite, the green gem attached her grappling hooks, swinging from tree to tree, darting in and out. Howlite was probably doing this well because he was in his natural environment, after all, he had selected this place. He had every advantage on her, but she had one point stacked in her favor, the trees. This allowed her to grapple endlessly with precision and accuracy. She could reach Howlite with ease regardless of his location, assuming that he did not move, but he would... With the ability to rapidly sip in and out of the trees she had an infinite amount of instant shields from Howlite's snipping, however he could fight at close range just fine if necessary. Either way Variscite had 'done well' according to her current master.
As Howlite was running towards the grappling Variscite he dropped down in front of her. "You're final challenge. Since clearly you've learned my teachings, it's time I test just how much you've learned. Hit me!" He was challenging her. Student against the Master. If she won she'd go to the Broken Gems in glorious triumph. If she failed Howlite would force her to start the 3rd days over again until she got it right. Either way, he would be proud. That's why he was so tough on her. Not because he knew she would fail. He pushed her because he knew she would win. She was a survivor. Like him. Her skills were impressive enough to survive but Howlite would show her how to thrive. The only way to become stronger... Is to evolve.
Hit him... that's it?! Variscite swung in and out of trees coming for Howlite. It is true that he is in his natural environment, even with this army, it should be hard to even touch him...
Even so, Variscite was determined to prove her self. She wished to convince her master that she was strong. She wanted to convince the Broken gems that she was strong. She even wanted to convince herself that she was strong. She had to.
As Variscite's corrupted gems ran, flew, and crawled through the East side of the forest, Variscite swung at Howlite from the West, hoping to pinch him in the middle. While making contact with Howlite's body would immediately place her in danger of defeat, she was in a place where her grappling hooks worked perfectly. She was in her natural environment.
As Variscite rapidly approached her mentor, she prepared for a capoeira-style, double kick to Howlite's torso. If he evaded it, then she would simply follow up with several other forms of kicks, punches, head butts, and chokes. The momentum to preform all of these moves so quickly would be derived from her momentum.
As Variscite attacked Howlite, he managed to dodge the first two kicks but then took the rest. By the time he got out of it, his jaw was dislocated in several places. He looked like he had been beaten with a bat. He gave her a thumbs up before pushing his jaw back in and realigning it. He then smiled. "My turn." He grabbed both her wrists and took to a grapple position. Then he Judo flipped her onto the ground and let go of her. "I have to say you've gotten better. Never had my jaw dislocated before. I suppose that was payback to before right? You've proven yourself to me and to yourself. Do you wish to leave or train more? The choice is yours."
Variscite thought carefully. Did Howlite want her to stay or to leave. The choice was hers, yet Variscite found herself unsure as to her next course of action. She had survived the three days, her original commitment. Hitting Howlite was an addition, but she had completed that mission too. Maybe now it would be best to go back.
Variscite smiled. Thank you, Howlite. I would like to leave for now. This mission has taught me a lot about improvising when necessary, a skill I had lacked before. Perhaps we could do this again some time. She nodded.
Now that this was over, Variscite was sure that she had passed Howlite's 'initiation' test. Hopefully she would pass Sulfur's too. Variscite began thinking deeply about this. Either way, she had stepped into another chapter of her life, maybe even a new book. Broken Gem Variscite.
