Sulfur watched her, clearly suffering intense pain. He frowned.
"Vari as much as I would say that pain is weakness leaving the body, I don't believe that this is the best way to spend your time. I will bring you back to the castle. Your performance on this mountain was truly profitable. I believe that if you continue to strive for greatness we will in time defeat the reaper." Sulfur said, nodding. "However now, is a time for rest."
Suddenly Sulfur's blades materialized around Variscite. If successful, the blades would pierce her physical form in ten different areas, which would if successful, poof her, alleviating her pain. Variscite had high endurance, so Sulfur put a spin on the blades so that her will would probably not be strong enough to survive long. The point was to poof her of course.
As blades began to materialize around her, Variscite held a solid glare. She realized that Sulfur was trying to help her only and not cause much pain. Yet she still felt just a slight bit betrayed. I shouldn't, its not like I joined the Broken Gems because I wanted to be shown love and friendship anyway... still.
Variscite prepared herself to dodge the best she could by pulling at her mostly dissolved tendons. The wretched gem bared her teeth and screamed. No matter how much she willed herself, the warrior could hardly move a muscle, as they were all dead and rotting anyway. No, she had no choose but to trust her master.
As the blades dug into Variscite from all sides, she felt herself loosing consciousness, white light enveloping her.
When she awoke she was at a table in the castle. Sulfur was seated across from her, talking with his human pearl. He was reading a book and wearing glasses. The Pearl quickly left the room when she noticed that Variscite was awake. Sulfur turned toward his ally and plucked his glasses from his face. Folding them, he sat the glasses beside him on the table. He put a bookmark in his book and sat it next to his glasses. Sulfur laced his fingers together and peered across the table at Variscite looking over his hands.
"Pain is good for training, but in excess it causes long term damage to the mind." Sulfur said, blinking. "I do believe that fearing pain is negative, but taking in as much pain as you did then is hazardous. Please... be more careful. Immense pain leads to psychological problems, these problems lead to weakness. That is... quite the opposite of what you want yes?"
Variscite awoke to her master reading a novel. She was glad to see that, like she, he was into books. This also meant that one did not have to train themselves without stop to achieve something greater. Sulfur was at least four times more powerful than she, and yet he was alright with reading a book rather than constantly training. Maybe their was hope for her too.
When the male gem began to speak about the possible dangers with her ideals yet again, the female frowned and began to think, closely listening to every word he said.
With a genuine grin on her face, the Broken Gem began.
"You are right in the sense that I practically jump into situations where I exhaust every part of my being and traverse the fine line from extremity to insanity. I frequently preform extreme work out rituals, but none break down my body like the most recent challenge did."
"However I thought that going through more pain would only progress my development, not hinder it. So it is with great interest that I listen to your advice on this matter. I will try to hold most training that could lead to psychological problems at bay as I continue to pursue greater strength."
Sulfur leaned forward so that his hands were blocking his face from his nose down from view. His eyes had a penetrating feel as he was about to deliver some valuable information. Well, at least he considered it valuable.
"You see... what I am doing right now is not training, but it is useful because it gives me the rest I need for my mind to prepare. Training needs energy, and without energy, training is only weakness. If you push yourself too far then you are not gaining strength but ruining your mind. It is like this rubber band." Sulfur said picking up a small rubber band. "If you stretch it slowly several times then it can reach great limits."
Sulfur started to stretch the band, each time it went further.
"But if you are hasty and give it a sudden tug that it cannot handle..." Sulfur violently jerked the rubber band, causing it to snap. "It dies."
Variscite moved in her chair and looked around at the castle interior, still marveling the fine place.
"I do sit and clear my mind as you say regularly, yet I still spend five to six hours of my day training my body physically. I... know my limits."
Variscite frowned and looked away before returning her gaze to Sulfur.
"While I push my limits, I am sometimes shocked by the abilities of my seemingly weak opponents. Like the spider-scorpion corruption we just fought. I felt the battle would be easy... but I made a terrible mistake in cutting off the tail. I will reside to rest my mind and body more... in order to ensure that I do not break like that rubber band."
"That is good... but the reason that you failed to defeat that corruption wasn't because you lacked training, it was because you lacked knowledge. As you can see, I am reading a book. Something you must know about me is... I am not really a powerful gem by default. I use my intellect to fight accurately and due to information I have acquired I can destroy a Quartz easily." Sulfur levitated as he placed the book back on it's shelf. He spoke without turning to face Variscite. "As you noticed, I was just reading a book. There are more ways to train than one. At any rate, I should be leaving now... Howlite has invited me to a wedding, and I've got a feeling I am going to enjoy it. Ta ta..."
Sulfur waved and started to walk down a corridor. A smirk crept onto his lips.
"Yes, I understand your concerns. I also spend a long amount of time leisurely to rest my mind from all the stress I take during the day. I read, sometimes for hours."
"I read books on the most influential world religions, sciences, and history. I wish to learn as much about this world I live in as I can. Information sometimes has more value than anything else, I believe this is true. I pay time as a currency to obtain it."
Veriscite suddenly turned as Sulfur said that he had been invited to a wedding.
I have heard nothing of this.
"Oh! Whose wedding? May I come as well."
The Broken Gem was eager to be a part of anything her mentor was hosting.
"Oh Variscite, you misunderstand the situation! This wedding is between two rebels that happen to be friends of Howlite. Well, they at least believe this. Howlite and I are setting up an ambush for the crystal gems. This is not a festival for us, but an attack. We are using their trust against them. If this doesn't successfully destroy them then it will definitely hurt their trust in recruiting newcomers." Sulfur explained, levitating a bit. He waved his hands to gesture as he spoke. "You do not know them and so bringing you would be pointless... At any rate, weddings are a human thing. Why would you want to attend to such a primitive ritual?"
Variscite considered books she had read on the human custom of a wedding. The idea was one that intrigued her greatly. A man and a woman joining forces and becoming closer than either of the two would be as mere friends. It was a disownment of ones own body; a shocking act which must require a great deal of trust. Both creatures devote themselves entirely to one another for the rest of their worldly existence. It was sad that humans thought it was alright to simply abandon their sacred vows by the manner of "divorce."
I can not imagine ever trusting someone enough to disown my life and place it in their hands, to be completely at their mercy... The thought... it, terrifies me...
"I see. Well, I suppose it is only that I wish to be a part of what is going on. Other than my training, I have nothing else to do for the now. I would like to spend my time living out the actual experience of this human ritual. Doing that would give me more understanding in said subject than one thousand books ever could."
"But if it is your desire that I stay, I will respect your opinion and not come, seeing as you are my leader."
"Your loyalty is appreciated Variscite... you do understand the values of loyalty... and since you are loyal I will repay your loyalty with my trust. This meeting I cannot take you to... but in the future I plan great things for you. I will be able to trust you, and you will be loyal to me... there will not be any limits to what we can accomplish...." Sulfur said, walking to her. He walked around her and casually stroked her hair, seeming to mean nothing by it. He circled around her, returning to stand in front of her. "Yes...you will be able to use my training to become the powerful gem you wish to be... and with that power, you can protect what you hold most dear."
Variscite's eyes widened as she listen Sulfur speak.
It seemed that he really understood her ideals and mission. It she left the Broken Gems now, would she still receive help from Sulfur by simply fighting him. No. More benefit would come from training with Sulfur. Yet, she had Octavian as well.
I suppose for the time being I'll call myself a Broken Gem when it suits me and sit on the fence, holding loyalty to both Octavian and Sulfur. Bloodstone will understand, but if Sulfur finds out about my split loyalties he will no doubt shatter me...
Variscite nodded in agreement.
"I am filled to the brim with gratitude. I am eager to accept whatever challenges you have for me, and I look forward to that training. You seem to understand me and my goal on this planet very well."
Sulfur nodded. He plucked a pair of glasses from his desk, opened them and placed them on the bridge of his nose. From a nearby closet he pulled a suit, but it was for Howlite, his name was on it. Sulfur was going to be wearing something very... different. He pulled a walkie talkie from his pocket and held it to his ear.
"Yes... is the cake ready? Over. ...Excellent... this will be interesting. Over and out." Sulfur turned off the walkie talkie and stored it safely in his pocket. A look of satisfaction was on his face, but he seemed to be hiding something as well. He turned toward Variscite with a devilish smirk. "I will see you in a few days Variscite... I have a wedding to prepare for."

Flurry: I think that theres not much that can be done in just, regular rps, I think before a fight both sides should agree to do it, and decide the winner based on logic, because otherwise we're doing this "Hey im really cool" thing that goes back and forth

Light: so... You think the fight system is bad, but you also don't know how to improve it? I understand what you are trying to say, but it is something that roleplayers should take care of. Admins can only tell you that the way you play is wrong or ban

This Roleplay is a prequel to Steven Universe to an extent with some slight retconing and its own progression to the story that will turn out differently to how stuff plays out in the show. Thanks to the message by Rose Quartz several gems are rising up to protect Earth and have labelled themselves as the Crystal Gems. Others on earth are remaining aligned to Homeworld though despite the isolation of Earth from Homeworld
All gems on earth are still stranded, the communication hub is still offline and all the space warps are shattered, it has now been revealed that this is the work of Rose Quartz and her small group known as the Crystal gems. They have rebelled against Homeworld and have chosen to protect the Earth (Trapping themselves on Homeworld to keep the warps down).
Now both sides are fighting among themselves along with fighting against the 'Corruption' a virus is infecting many gems turning most of them into mindless monsters, but those with a stronger will seem to becoming something more sinister.
The Game has changed now. The question has finally been posed, are you against Homeworld or allied with them. Or do you have your own agenda that may or may not been assisted by the ‘Corruption’. Regardless the seeds have been placed down and although it is only the beginning the fight for or against Earth and the corruption has begun. The choice is yours for how it is shaped on the Original Steven Universe Roleplay Site.
