Variscite sat on a bench in the beach. The sky was a bright blue, and the observational gem touched the sandy floor with her shoes. It appeared that sand was simple a smaller version of rocks, which were, in turn, a smaller version of boulders. Those boulders broke off of mountains, which protruded from the largest rock nearby; the planet Earth itself. The green gem wondered what smaller particles made up the grains of sand she now examined. One hundred could easily fit on her finger. At length, the tired wanderer sighed.
As the sun changed position in the sky and shadows changed shape and direction, Variscite leisurely read her novel of choice today; "The Origin of Species." The book was written by a human named Charles Darwin, a convinced evolutionist. Variscite was interested in different religions and worldviews; she always had been. This theory presented suggested that all life came from an explosion of particles. It offered that their was nothing in the beginning, which then exploded into something. Yet how did nothing explode? The idea of all that existed in the universe she saw happening by accident seemed to be a bit of a stretch for her. Nonetheless this book fascinated her as it held a certain idea, "Survival of the fittest." Variscite mused over the fact that this concept still rang true on this day. Variscite was incapable before, and then a traumatizing incident helped her probe herself and become "strong." Despite all of this, many gems on this planet were stronger than she was. How much more did Variscite need to evolve?
The gem let these thoughts of personal interest run through her mind as she rested under a tree by the bench, patiently watching the waves crash against the sea shore.
