Flurry smiled and accepted the sushi, nodding politely and thanking the human. She started to eat her sushi, watching Howlite speak as she did. After she swallowed a big piece a thoughtful look formed on her face.
"I don't really see how it could be nice to boss somebody else around... I always want to be part of a team with all of my teammates. " Flurry said, taking another bite. "Rose Quartz is the leader of the crystal gems...but I've never even met her... I think of her more as a friend I haven't met than a boss. I couldn't imagine wanting to be anybody's boss... "
She finished the sushi and noticed a huge glob of wasabi sauce. She looked at it for a moment before gobbling it down. She squeezed her eyes tight and they teared up. She became panicked and drank as much water as she could in a single gulp. Afterward she sighed.
"Well I suppose it all boils down to my past. I guess I got kicked around so much that I enjoy being able to do the kicking for once. I dunno. You know something Slugger? I'm a little jealous of you sometimes. You are so many wonderful things. You're kind, caring, generous, and forgiving. I'm not sure even I would've forgiven myself. You are so innocent. You are perhaps one of the best gems I will ever meet. But me? I'm just an old drunk rambling on about his troubled past. I wish I was more like you. Then I wouldn't have these problems." When Flurry ate the wasabi and started to panic, his eyes widened. "Oh my stars are you okay?!!" As she sighed, he too sighed in relief. He gave her a hug. "Don't you dare scare me like that."
Flurry looked down at her empty plate. She scraped her chopsticks along the wasabi remains, spreading them across the plate. After a bit she looked back up to look into at Howlite's eyes. Her face looked like a mixture of sadness and hope as she grabbed his hand.
"Anybody would be like you if they lived like that... " She mumbled, frowning at him. "I don't know what it's like to be told that you were wrong...before you even got to try... You're actually pretty great for somebody who started off like that... "
She sat up and looked into his eyes.
"You're only talking about what matters to you... and that's really okay, it's really nice to listen to. I want to know what it was like for you... so that I can make sure that it's different now. " Flurry smiled sadly. "No matter what... don't feel like you have to be the guy you think you are... you sometimes don't care about gems, but the ones you do care about you care about a lot... you even got scared because I ate spicy food! That awful green guy must be lucky! "
Howlite raised an eyebrow. "You... Want to know?" He was confused. Since when do people care about him or his life. He stared at her for a few seconds and then sighed. "Well I guess I should tell you the whole thing. I'll leave out the gore for your sake." He then readjusted her in his lap so now she looked like a kid talking to Santa. "I'll start with my creation I guess. When my injector went into the ground, something went wrong. What it created... Wasn't a Howlite. It was something else entirely. I woke up feeling an aching pain. I had not yet learned to juggle my many personalities. The pain was horrible. But then the Peridot who made me, she went to inspect me and I was labeled defective. She died. Let's skip ahead about 50 years. At this point I met a woman who would change my life forever. Yellow Diamond. You see, the Howlites had told me she was this perfect goddess who could do no wrong. But when I met her, I could see it. I could see her ambition, her wrath. She took one look at me and simply stated "this Howlite is blue not white. Kill him." That was her exact words. So when a Quartz came to kill me, I killed him in return. Upon seeing that she was shocked. No Howlite could single handedly bring down a Quartz. Much less kill one. So she decided to make me her assassin. From there it was easy jobs. Just contract after contract. Then I got one that would be how we met. A contract that read, Crystal Gems. That's how we met. I had planned to kill you. But then we met and I said to myself "no. Not her. Pick off someone else but not her." You were just too innocent and kind to break. You actually broke me instead. Once I healed, I found you in the woods. And here we are." As he told his story he would stroke her hair like a father would to his daughter. He rocked her gently with his leg to comfort her. "you have been nothing but kind to me. I will never forget that."
Flurry leaned against him and giggled as he scooped her into his lap. She listened with an excited look in her eyes as he started to speak. After a while when he reached the part about Yellow Diamond her eyelids started to droop. Once he talked about becoming an assassin Flurry was starting to nod off. By the time he had finished his story was disturbed by her snoring. She seemed very comfortable. She snuggled against Howlite's hoodie, as if it were a pillow. After a short while she dropped from his lap and onto the floor. However, this too did not wake her. She wiggled her arms a bit, slightly made uncomfortable by the hard, cold floor. Her face showed it.
Howlite was about to get another drink when he heard snoring. He smiled at Flurry and freaked out when she hit the floor. After calming himself down, he picked her up and cradled her like an infant in his arms so she could keep sleeping. He carried her to a warp pad and warped to Sulfur's castle. He knew she'd be safe here because Sulfur wasn't home right now as far as he knew. He led her into his room. Not his torture room but a separate room comprised of 2 beds. One was a full size bed but the other was a twin bed just big enough for Howlite or smaller. He laid her gently on the twin size bed and then stood over her. To watch over her while she slept.
Sulfur's Pearl walked down the hall, folding clothes as she walked. She came across Howlite's room and found the door cracked open, the room wasn't usually like that, it looked freshly used. She crept into the room slowly and peered in at the two. She first saw Howlite, a gem who she had met, and who she would've known anyway from the various portraits of him around the castle. She had met him, but didn't actually know what type of person he was.
"I-I won't tell... " Pearl whispered as she entered the room, backing away a bit. "Do you think I should bring her some tea or something like that? "
Pearl smiled and looked at the shirt she had been folding.
"She's White Spinel... right? Sulfur talks about her sometimes in the shower when he's angry. Still, I won't tell... so don't worry. "
Howlite slowly nodded to the Pearl. "Some tea would be good. I brought her here because it's the only place I can make sure she's safe. Yes this is White Spinel. She's my family along with Sulfur. Whether or not he admits it is his business. Look, I know you and I aren't exactly best friends or anything but... Could you do me a favor? If Sulfur comes home... Could you stall him for me? Just long enough to get her out of here? She's innocent in all this. And she's only like 260 years old. Extremely young for a gem. To give you a clue, I'm 1000. She's practically a child in my society. I would really appreciate it if you helped me protect her."
"You see... my life has been a wreck until I met your boss. My parents hate me and I have no friends. One night I had decided that it wasn't worth it, living, but when I met him, Sulfur, I was at his little diner... He was nice to me, a bit at least, and he told me he was an alien and wanted me to clean his mansion. Most people would have probably just thought he was making fun of them, but I was desperate... so I came, and he was telling the truth. You know, that night I had decided to end it all, but I'm here and I`m alive because of him. I`ll never forget that he accepted me... so, it's not like I'm doing this against him with a clean conscience... " Pearl looked at Howlite with a serious expression. "I can't just hurt little girls for no reason... but if Sulfur walks through these doors right now and ask me to kill her, I wouldn't hesitate. Not that I want to, but you have to understand, I owe him my life. "
Pearl left the room and returned a few minutes later with the tea. She sat it at Flurry's bedside. She started heading toward the doorway but then paused.
"Don't you dare tell him about this... if he ever finds out... " Pearl turned to Howlite. "You`ll learn what a human can do... "
"Then you too must understand that if you so much as lay a finger on her I will destroy you."
He turned to face her.
"I don't kill anymore. No. I won't kill you. But if I find out you've harmed her I will show you exactly what goes on in my business room. Savvy?"
As Pearl left, he looked back at Flurry. He brushed her hair with his hand.
"I made a promise to protect you. I have no wish to fight my brother but if it means keeping you safe, I'll do it. I wish Sulfur could see you as I do. Perhaps then we'd be better off."
He stopped brushing her and grabbed some paper and a pencil. He began working on a sketch. The sketch was a face. The left side was Flurry and the right was Sulfur. A line was drawn in the center to divide the 2. Howlite stared at the sketch.
"You've never had no reason to live than one person... I can't expect you to know how I feel. I don't want to hurt her, but I probably won't have to if you're quiet about this. " With that she left.
A few moments later Flurry opened her eyes. Her eyes didn't open entirely, they were only half open, as she adjusted to the light. She sat up and picked up the cup. The teacup was on a plate, so she could hold the plate and the cup. The risk of spilling was much lower this way. She glanced over at the sketch.
"Did you draw that?! You're super good at drawing Howlite! " She said, perking up. Then her expression became more serious as she noticed what it meant. "Howlite... some gems just see things different. I love hanging out with you, but don't put yourself in danger for me... I wouldn't be able to live with myself if you got hurt because of me... "
"Home. We're home. I live here. This is my bedroom. You see, we're currently in a castle out in the wastelands. Far away from gems. We Broken Gems all live here. It's our sanctuary. I'll take you home if you'd like. It's not fair to keep you here. We'll go to the temple in the morning. For now just make yourself at home."
He pinned the sketch up on the wall next to a bunch of other sketches. They all were depictions of either Light, Flurry, or the Broken Gems. But one picture was the largest and most detailed. It was in the center of the collage and featured everyone. In the bottom corner it read, 'Maybe some day.' It was Howlite's life dream. To have his whole family together.
Flurry looked at the pictures in awe. She climbed out of bed and walked toward the sketches to get a closer look. She hung her arms at her sides as she carefully examined them. Her face changed to suit the emotions emitted by the drawings. Sometimes sadness, sometimes joy, sometimes confusion, and sometimes disappointment. Eventually she focused on the large sketch, saving it for last. She reached out her hand and nearly touched it, but drew back at the last second.
"I didn't know that you drew that green guy so much... " She said pointing at Sulfur in a sketch. "I think all of your drawings are great, but he looks wrong! You always draw him with that angry face or that smile... He never smiles like that, and that angry face doesn't really look normal on him. I always saw him having... a lonley face. I'm pretty sure he doesn't have many friends. I know he might look angry a lot... but nobody is really like that inside... "
"He does smile Slugger. Occasionally. And you're right. He's lonely. Has been ever since the Diamonds shattered his soulmate. Of course that was before I was made. About 1000 years or so before my time. He's been through a lot. A lot more than you know. I'm not saying the way he treats you is ok, I'm just saying that there's a reason he's like that. I'm glad you like the drawings."
His eyes widened.
"I have an idea! How about I draw a picture of us and then when I take you home tomorrow, you can take it with you?"
He started to brainstorm ideas. He was really excited about this plan. His left hand was literally twitching from excitement.
"I didn't ever think that he had no reason... everybody does stuff because there's a reason... I just thought that you would've drawn him how he looks inside... " Flurry looked at Howlite and sighed. "I think that it makes sense why he doesn't like me... since we became friends I've... messed up your friendship with him... You were probably like... the only friend he has... I... ruined your friendship... "
Flurry stared at the floor and didn't seem to hear Howlite's question. After a little while however she started to shake subtly. Tears were in her eyes as she looked at the floor. She seemed to be deep in thought about the painting. Eventually she wiped the tears from her eyes with her fingers.
