As Flurry cried, he walked up to her and put a hand on her shoulder.
"Flurry you do realize that we're friends again right? We patched up. You did nothing wrong. If he can't see you as I do then that's his problem. Listen if he tries to hurt you he'll have to go through me. And I will not lose. Now then let's get back to work. He sat down on the floor across from her and started sketching.
"You know how I became so good at drawing? My shooting. You see drawing is nothing more than basic geometry. Sane with shooting. I know all the angles thanks to being a Howlite. I can see every necessary angle to form the image."
"You shouldn't have to fight your friend...even if you can beat him. He's pretty scary...but even he wasn't as dangerous as he is... the main point is that you're probably gonna have to fight your friend for me... and I don't want that... I'd rather get hurt than make you guys get hurt... to make you hurt your friend, and to make him hurt his only friend... " Flurry tugged at Howlite's sleeve. "I can't fight very well, but I'm taking classes from Blue Quartz... she's teaching me how to dodge and stuff, also I've got the crystal gems on my side! If he does try to hurt me, I'll be fine... but you've got to promise me that you guys won't fight... "
She turned and looked at the sketch.
"That's really cool! ...um " Flurry paused. "Will you teach me to shoot? With this? "
Flurry reached into her gem and pulled out a small cheap-looking slingshot. She had three stones with it.
"I can't summon a weapon, so I thought I'd use one that isn't from my gem, like humans do! "
"Well you've come to the best. That little slingshot of yours is perfect for a beginner like you. I'll make a true Marksman out of you."
He knelt down to her level and placed her hands on the slingshot so she could see how to hold it.
"Now the key to shooting is focus. You need to be 100 percent focused on your target and nothing else. Distractions will throw off your aim. Now I want you to take one of your stones. And try to hit this."
He pulled out a bottle and placed it at the end of the room.
Flurry stuck out her tongue and scrunched up her eyebrows as she tried to focus. She placed a stone in the slingshot and pulled back. She tried to line up the stone with the bottle and for a moment was still. When she released the stone, it inexplicably flew over the bottle. Flurry grunted and loaded the slingshot again. She then fired and missed, once again, not even close to her mark. The last shot however soared directly for the bottle. It hit the bottle, cracked it a bit, but the bottle didn't fall down.
"I hit it! " Flurry giggled. She looked at the bottle and rubbed her chin. "I can't knock it down though... do you have any ideas for hitting harder? "
"Nice shot. Now I'm about to teach you a secret of the trade. Every assassin knows that the key to small ammunition is to give it speed. Your stones are not aerodynamic. Allow me to help." He summoned a single bullet from his gem and held it out for her to see. He then held it between his thumb and index finger.
"Hold your stones still. And don't move."
He flicked the bullet and concentrated. The bullet spun into each stone and drilled the sides to make each of them cone shaped. All 3 were perfect cones and the bullet vanished.
"There you are. This will allow your stones to achieve greater speed. Face the point end at your target."
Flurry nodded at his advice. She didn't understand it well, but she assumed it to be true. After all, Howlite said it. She looked at the stones and their new shapes. She smiled and loaded one into her slingshot. She focused and pulled back, her eyes locked onto her target. She let go and the stone flew from the slingshot.
Upon hitting the bottle, the stone flew through it. The bottle broke apart into shards of glass. Flurry gasped and smiled at her work. She ran to the pile of broken glass and tiptoed over the shards, moving toward her 'bullet'. She picked up the stone and held it to her face affectionately.
"That's awesome Teddy! Now I can go and fight monsters! " She said smiling ecstatically. "Let's go find one! "
"I'm proud of you. You did good. We can't go hunt monsters just yet though. I need to teach you a few more tricks before I put you against a monster. Not that you're doing a bad job. You're doing wonderful. It's just that this sort of thing takes time if you're not made for it. Here's your next trick."
He placed 3 bottles side by side.
"Aim small, miss small. You aim for a gem, you might miss by an inch. You aim for a form, you might miss by a foot. Understand? Now try and hit the center bottle's cap. If you do that, you'll get a surprise."
Flurry tried her best to listen to the instructions... they were simple enough. She drew in a deep breath and loaded her slingshot. Her eyes locked on the bottlecap. She had a dutiful look in her eyes. With all of her determination she made sure that she would definitely hit her target. Loading the stone she pulled it back in the slingshot, waiting for the perfect moment.
She blinked a few times to make sure that she was ready to shoot without blinking at the last moment and missing. She took in a deep breath and stopped breathing altogether to maintain maximum focus. Finally, she released the stone, firing it toward the bottle. She missed by a total of only five feet and three inches.
Flurry smiled and nodded. Since he still had more advice she hadn't failed, she was just not educated enough in hunting! She still had a shot at becoming... a shooter person. She readied her slingshot and closed one eye. She froze for at least two minutes, one would think she was a statue. Suddenly she released the stone.
The stone flew through the cap, breaking it apart. Flurry gasped and put her fists under her chin in excitement. She hopped into the air and landed on a cloud that she had summoned midair. She hopped up and down on her cloud happily.
"I did it Teddy! I hit the cap! Can we go hunt monsters now!? Hmm!? Hmm!? " Flurry squeaked.
"oh all right. We'll go hunt. But there will be some rules. 1: what I say goes. 2: the moment things become too dangerous we're going straight home. And lastly 3: stay in my line of sight. If you agree to these things then I will take you hunting."
He thought about where to take her. Not the volcano it's too dangerous. Not the Ocean it was too risky for her. Perhaps Mask Island! That was perfect! He started to consider Flurry's skill level. As long as she followed rule 3 she should be okay. He then looked at her proudly.
"we should get going. It's almost nightfall. That's the best time to hunt. It'll be a good chance to improve your stealth as well. We'll be going to Mask Island."
