The communication hub had been down for a while. If it were up, the Crystal gems would not be a thing. Sulfur was the sort of gem who benefited from lack of Homeworld control, due to the fact that he was a sort of fugitive. On earth, he could survive off of the chaos that reigned. If homeworld had complete dominion over earth then he would have been caught. Crystal gems have no time to capture a fugitive, they were of no threat to him, and Homeworld gems didn't care as they were dealing with a larger crisis.
Sulfur often visited the communication hub for this reason, to check it's status. If some gem were trying to fix it he should know about it. He believed that survival was possible after it's activation, but not without preparations. As he examined the communication hub he was satisfied to notice that no gem had been there for quite a while. After all of this time no progress had been made. He was starting to believe that homeworld left it as a last resort priority. This was good news. The chaos would continue. He levitated as he examined the structure.
Black Pearl stepped off of the warp pad, then squinted up at the tall structure. The Communication Hub… The Pearl sighed, comforted by the sight of Gem technology. It was so much more advanced than the primitive tools that humans used. She walked around the pillars, running her hand along the smooth surfaces. As she approached a panel, a shadow caught her eyes. She cocked her head curiously as she examined it. She looked up. A Gem! But were they Home World or rebel? Only one way to find out.
“Hello!” She called, waving her hands. “Hello, up there! I’m Black Pearl, servant of the great and powerful Morion! Hiiiiiii!!!”
As she looked up at the Gem, she suddenly noticed something. There was an unfamiliar insignia on his attire…
Sulfur became irritated as he heard footprints. He turned around to see a pearl, the most pathetic species of gem. He dropped onto the ground and started to approach the gem. The expression he wore on his face was like that of one who had just wiped a bug off of their boot. As she spoke however, his opinion of her and expression turned a complete 180. He grinned with ecstatic joy.
"You know Smoky Quartz!? No...you don't only know him...you're his direct underling. I thought his pearl was an older human man...? Nevermind!" Sulfur started to levitate around her. "How lucky you are! You are under the finest Quartz I have met, and I have met many!"
He put his arms behind his back.
"I never thought pearls were in his taste...but then again I don't know him very well..." Sulfur said, smiling and rubbing his chin.
Black Pearl’s smile dropped as she saw the Gem’s expression. It was one of disgust. The Pearl’s lip trembled, her feelings hurt, but her smile returned as the other Gem grinned. When he said that Morion was the finest Quartz he had ever met, she wasn’t sure whether to agree or become defensive. However, when he said he didn’t know him very well, she sighed in relief. Nobody has to die today, she thought cheerfully. “Oh, I am lucky!” She said clasping her hands together. “Very lucky indeed! And he absolutely is the most finest Quartz on Earth, perhaps in all the Gem colonies in the known universe!” Her eyes became a bright shade of pink as she sighed happily. “And the most strong, and powerful, and handsome…” She looked up at the sky, smiling happily. Her face was slightly grey with a blush. She sighed, then cleared her throat, looking back at the Gem. “I’m afraid I didn’t catch your name!” She said, then stuck out her hand, expecting him to shake it. “As previously mentioned, I’m Black Pearl!”
He smiled at her reaction. After what had happened with Howlite it was nice to meet another Morion enthusiast. He rubbed his chin as she spoke, she seemed to be the cheerful type. Most pearls were uptight and rude, this too was refreshing. He chuckled in amusement once she had finished.
"So you not only like him but fancy him." Sulfur said with a grin. "I feel no...attraction to him, but I do deem him a good choice."
Sulfur levitated and laid back as if on an invisible bed. He turned over and levitated upside down, causing his hair to hang downward. He shook her hand while in this position, yet his expression was serious.
"I didn't give it yet I'm afraid, excuse me." He said briefly. "I am Sulfur! It is a pleasure."
He landed on his feet, seemingly deep in thought.
"Say...do you mind if I call you Mel, for Melissa?" He asked. "Nothing is wrong with your name... I just have never given someone a proper nickname and thought it would be interesting as an experiment."
Black Pearl felt relieved when Sulfur said he wasn't attracted to Morion. Nobody would have to die today! She felt cheerful about this. She hated to make friends and then later have the desire to kill them. She was more than fascinated by his ability to levitate, and she felt a strange urge to push him, to see if he would tumble away as if there was no gravity. But that would be rude. When Sulfur suggested that he call her Mel, she frowned, confused. "But why Melissa?" She asked. "If I'm not mistaken, that is a human name. A lovely one, no doubt, but I'm not sure why you would choose Melissa." She looked down at herself. "Do I look like a Melissa?" She inquired curiously.
Sulfur waited a bit before responding. He floated behind her, but before she could turn around he reappeared, leaning over her shoulder. His head was an inch above her right shoulder, he was once again laying on his back, the rest of his body was behind her. His legs were crossed as if laying on the beach. His hands were in his pockets. His hair draped onto her shoulder a bit, but it looked kind of like he didn't notice, and if he did he didn't care.
"Yes... and well... yes." Sulfur said, clearing his throat. "I once met a human named Melissa... you look a lot like her."
He then floated backward and was suddenly in front of her.
"She's dead now." He said bluntly. "Not that you look like a dead human, but I needed a name and decided to pick that one."
Black Pearl had to crane her neck to the side to look at Sulfur. Maybe it was just her, but this Gem seemed to be a little unaware of the idea of personal space. She didn't mind, however. He was being awfully nice, and she appreciated this. Tears filled Black Pearl's eyes when Sulfur mentioned the dead human. "Oh, I'm so sorry," she said, her lip trembling. "You two must have been close..." She suddenly hugged Sulfur tightly. "Oh, you poor dear! You can call me whatever you like!" She pulled back, her hands still on his shoulders. "Melissa it is!" She wiped her eyes, then sighed. "I know what it's like to lose a loved one. Of course, that's okay, because I'm going to shatter the Gem that look my former master away from me!" To demonstrate, she stepped back and summoned a cloud of fog from her gem. Two figures were formed. One was large and buff, while the other was tall and thin. The thinner figure repeatedly stabbed the larger, then grabbed something from it's body. The figure disappeared, and the small object was crushed in the other figure's hand. The fog was sucked back into Black Pearl's Gem, and she smiled sweetly. "Anyway, what brings you here to the Communication Hub?"
"Close?" He asked, raising an eyebrow. "Hardly. I killed her because-"
He suddenly froze when she hugged him. His left eye twitched and his body stiffened. He hated hugs, even the thought of prolonged physical contact with another individual. When she pulled back he tried to hide his disturbed expression as quickly as he could. He tried to replace that look with a friendly grin, but it looked a bit odd.
"I lost my master as well. I've been fighting every since to avenge her." Sulfur said, gingerly taking her hands of his shoulders. He then chuckled a bit, trying to lighten the mood. As he watched her smoke projections he grinned. It was entertaining. "My master perished much slower..."
He zoned out for a bit, only snapping back to reality as she asked a question.
Black Pearl's eyes widened, and they paled with surprise. She covered her mouth with her hand. "Oh goodness!" She said. "But why would you...? Oh, never mind, it's none of my business. It was just a human, anyway." She noticed that her hug had made him uncomfortable, and she instantly backed away, smiling apologetically. When Sulfur said that he had lost his master as well, she began to cry again, and more intensely when he said she had perished slowly "Oh, that's... that's so sad!" She exclaimed, wiping her eyes. She sniffled, then looked at Sulfur. "You know what? We're kinda the same, you and I. We lost our former masters, we're on a hunt for revenge..." She held out her hand. "We should help each other out! I have really fun ideas for making people suffer! And, no offense, but you look like the kind of Gem who has ties with shady individuals, so maybe you could get me some resources!" She smiled. "Whaddya say?"
Sulfur smiled when she said just a human. He didn't admire or even like humans, but had had no reason to dislike them. Humans were like mere objects to him. He didn't care for their lives or for their deaths. They might as well be trees. When she backed away he became much more comfortable. She suddenly started to cry. He looked at her in confusion.
"I suppose it is rather sad..." He said, more concerned about her than the event at the time, wondering how it had so quickly brought her to tears. Most didn't care much about his beloved. Little did he know, they had a reason not to care. She then suggested that they were alike and asked to form an alliance. She also seemed to know what his friends were like.
"Very well." He said, straightening his collar. "I will help you. I recommend you don't officially join us... let me say your hunch was right on the mark... but your affiliations with homeworld can be useful aswell."
Us? Now Black Pearl was intrigued. She wanted to ask, but was instantly distracted when he mentioned her affiliations with Home World. "I can be useful?" She said, her eyes brightening. "Ohhhh, do tell, do tell! I want to help! I'd love to help a new best friend!" She jumped up and down excitedly, apparently forgetting that she had just been weeping. "What do you need?" She inquired, skipping about. "Lasers? Jaspers? Ships? I'm sure that the great and wonderful, powerful, amazing..." She suddenly shook her head. "Oh, sorry... I mean, I'm sure that Morion has plenty of such things at his disposal. And I'm sure that, if I asked nicely, he wouldn't mind lending me some." She twirled her hair with her finger. "A Pearl has her ways!"
Sulfur squinted as she called him a best friend. Sulfur did feel akin to this gem, yet friend was always a strong word to him. He didn't make friends, only acquaintances that he liked. If he did have a friend, they had already broken that friendship. She did seem enthusiastic, this was a good sign.
"Oh you do huh?" Sulfur said with a grin. Then he considered her offers. "Um... I think that Smoky Quartz would not want to waste those sort of resources on a gem like me. I am the leader of a group called the Broken gems, however we are in shambles. There is one gem however, named Howlite. He is one of us... well was... you see he's developed a sort of hatred to your current master. I would love to torture the little wretch, but I'm sure you would take much more pleasure from that ordeal."
Black Pearl frowned. "Broken Gems...? I don't think I've heard of them... It sounds kinda cool! But my loyalty is to Home World, of course, and to..." She sighed, smiling. "Morion... But that doesn't mean I can't help you out, of course! I would hate to go behind my master's back, even to help a friend, but I can find other ways to assist you." When he mentioned a Gem named Howlite, and how he hated Morion, she waved her hand, as if shooing the thought away. "Oh, then I don't want to bother with him. I just have problems with those who try to take my master's love from me! But... now that I think about it... if this Howlite hates Morion, then does that mean he wants to hurt him?!" She gasped, clapping her hands over her mouth. Then her eyes darkened, and she smiled. "Well, I'd like to see him try... I'll help you take him down. But it seems that you two have a history, so..." She put her pointer finger in the air. "We can torture him together!" She clasped her hands together. "I know of a lovely little device that forces a Gem to keep their form, no matter how much pain they're in. Oh, I simply have too many ideas!" She walked back and forth, thinking. She tapped her chin, humming quietly to herself, then looked at Sulfur. "We could lure him into a trap," she said. "However, that may be a tad difficult. One of us would have to lead him into the trap, and since he knows you, I would have to act as the bait... What is this Howlite like?"
"Howlite doesn't only want to hurt Morion, he wants to torture him. Not like he would even be able to do something like that, but the fact that he wants to makes me boil with rage." Sulfur hissed, glaring at the air. "Well Howlite is a self-righteous fool who claims to be making the right choices in his life. He's too pitiful to shatter something when he needs to. If he were you, and Morion were lets say... in love with another, then he would not even destroy the rival. He makes illogical choices and is soft overall. The problem is, he is nearly immune to pain. The only way to hurt him, is to attack the heart." Sulfur smirked.
