It had been a new experience for her to watch the growth of a team, and she felt that she had been enlightened by what she saw. If she had let her initial impressions of a gem like 2FG get in the way, she would have never come to see the profound improvement that such a gem could undergo during something like this-- nor would she'd realized the wit and creativity that laid beneath the surface. Her curiosity had paid off, and she could see the glow of honor in 7XB's aura as they turned to face her.
"You flatter me!" The sapphire responded and waved her hand, playfully dismissive,"2FG has had many long hours of training, with a strong commander and robust teammates! I can hardly take credit for that. You certainly have a team to be proud of, Commander 7XB,"
Padparadscha stood from where she sat and stepped down from the seating arrangement, so that she could be on ground level next to the quartz. She looked up at them with a small, contained smile, and began to speak in a lowered voice as the two of them stood in front of the row of rubies. "I imagine you're an awfully busy gem, your team is so polished," She commented,"Do you manage to get time in for personal practice?"
"You honor us, Your Clarity, truly." Her question, though, threw them for a loop- but it was in fact a welcome surprise. 7XB rarely got the chance to talk about themselves, and while they were far from the vainest gem they did relish the opportunities when they arose, even from as unexpected a patron as Padparadscha. "Well," they began with some modesty, " I do what I can to keep myself combat-ready." In truth, the Quartz spent most of their time on base doing just that- training. Either alongside their soldiers or in what time they had alone, it didn't matter. And on mission, of course, they would hone these skills to a keen edge. In this situation, however, they preferred to remain humble. "I expect nothing less of myself than them."
Padparadscha nodded, knowing that there were some things that the quartz wasn't saying, but she had to be satisfied with this answer at the risk of prying. The sapphire often had to remind herself that the gems she spoke with in her downtime weren't under interrogation, she didn't want them to feel as such either. Surreptitiously, she checked the time and saw that the extended gap in her schedule was still underway. Usually this would have caused her a headache, but this drill had already proven to be productive-- she smirked as she wondered where else it could be taken.
"I'm not a fighter myself," She contemplated out loud,"But it certainly would be a treat to see how gems such as yourself maintain their prowess," She had seen the quartz's ability to command and educate, but it had yet to be seen what their own practical abilities wear. At the same time, Padparadscha didn't want to be overly demanding of 7XB's time. "Of course, I understand if you have more important matters to attend to,"
As impassive and unreadable as the quartz soldier liked to believe themselves to be, something told them that this interesting little Sapphire was just as unreadable, if not more, than they were. Again and again she surprised them in both word and action; She was much more personable than most gems on-base, themselves included. Originally, 7XB imagined that her interest in their training drills was little more than a passing fancy, something done on a whim and hardly legitimate. It was, of course, an honor either way, but they were beginning to realize that she held a very legitimate interest in what they did.
And more, she wanted to see what they were capable of as well. Though a thick brow rose, 7XB nodded, a coy smile forming upon their lips as they turned to face the Rubies with some excitement, eagerness upon their cheeks. "Why certainly. Did you..have an opponent in mind, your clarity?.." they motioned, of course, to the rubies who still stood at attention. "Or perhaps a hologram construct.."
"Hmm..." She leaned on one hip and crossed her arms as she looked over the ruby squad, then peered over the projectors at the far side of the room. Of course, she already knew what she wanted to ask of the quartz-- it had been in the back of her mind since she'd first imposed herself upon their drill-- but she wasn't sure what kind of reaction she'd receive from this steadfast gem. They were no-doubt well rehearsed in convention, and she considered that this request might stifle the gem's ability to express the full range of their ability.
However, if they had been awarded the command of their own team of rubies, with free reign of the Moonbase, then it was settled by the Diamonds that this gem was an impressive fighter. She knew that 7XB was good at what they did, but wanted to know more about them, in their own realm and element.
"Well...I'd make an awful sparring partner, but perhaps you can teach me some things about how a proper soldier uses their talents?" She gave a smirk, her fiery eyes challenged 7XB to cross a line they may not be willing to cross, "It's been some time since I've had a moment to practice, myself. Running between courts, shipping off to Earth, I'm usually quite busy if you can believe it,"
All heads in the room immediately whipped towards the sapphire, each and every one of the Rubies joining 7XB in the motion, audible gasps leaving several of their lips as the challenge was issued. "Your Clarity?.." All expression had left the Quartz's face, washed away by the sheer.. unorthodoxy of the request. They couldn't tell if she was serious. And if so, would it be out of line for them to refuse? Worse yet, could they even consent safely?
There was truly no precident for such a thing, so they would have to just.. wing it? "I.. suppose I could.. demonstration some of my technique for you, " they began with some mellow caution, still unwilling to voice total acceptance of her request, but nor did they wish to completely deny her. THAT, they knew, would be more out of line than anything. If nothing else, they possessed an obligation to their cadre, to demonstrate to them what an obediant soldier was. " To the Seats, you all. Out of the way." The sharp command spurred them to action, 2FG leading the small pack of gems towards the benches. 7XB turned now to face her, instinctively looking her up and down, "You're.. sure? Your Clarity." Even as they spoke, a note of uncertainty in their voice, they popped their neck. Again, instinct.
Padparadscha reveled in the shock that she had caused for a moment-- she couldn't hide the fact that her smirk had formed into an adrenaline fueled smile. The sapphire clasped her hands together, and underneath it all, watched 7XB closely as they processed the information. As usual the commander was guarded, stonewalling her with their unyielding expressions. However, she was beginning to recognize this gem's way of navigating society, and she detected a bit of the bewilderment in their dark timbre.
As the rubies filed into the seats that she had once occupied, Padparadscha made her way to the pit. It felt surreal to stand there, after so many years of avoiding it. This would be hard for both of them, she decided, once faced with the huge soldier gem more than twice her size and experience. In a fleeting moment, she almost wanted to claim that it was all a joke. She held fast to her position and reminded herself of why she was doing it in the first place. It was hard to imagine that the quartz who had been stepping on eggshells this entire time would stop giving consideration now, though one could never know with a cut of gem meant for battle. The small indications in 7XB's manner showed their innate aptitude for sizing up an opponent. She wondered how meager she appeared from the other side of the pit.
"It's an honor to have a chance to see your style," She answered with confidence, her smile returning to her lips as she hardened her resolve,"I just hope to learn from you today, commander,"
Even as they retreated to take their places at opposite sides of the arena, something 7XB was quite accustomed to, they couldn't help but feel..out a place in this place they had been so many times. Not necessarily this arena, no, but similar fields of battle.
It wasn't their opponent that concerned them, not in a conventional sense, anyway- for from what they had seen, it didn't seem like the noble gem would be much trouble in an actual fight. Which, again, this was not. No, they were wondering why the Padparadscha has asked such an unusual favor of them, and what dates awaited them if they made a mistake and took things too far.'I suppose just..give her what she asked for?'
Fingers curled into fists, the quartz bringing them to smash together, a faint, white light emanating from the point of impact, soon coating both of their hands in hardlight steel up to the elbow- heavy gauntlets. "Weapons up." There was a keen edge in their voice, like one drawing steel across a sharpening stone.
With nod and a delicate flick of her wrists, flashes of pink spun into the shapes of two ornate katar within her grasp. The ergonomic grips of her blades reminded her of all the unpleasant moments connected with them-- moments she kept buried, who came crawling back up to the front of her mind. But she couldn't make excuses for herself forever. This gem in front of her made no excuses, they did their duty, and she imagined that 7XB had faced down many fears to get where they were today. The sapphire wasn't made for fighting in particular, yet she often found herself in situations where it was necessary to summon these blades--only to fail when her fears had driven themselves between herself and her goals. Memories of the undignified manners in which she had been trapped and abused by gems much stronger than her threw gas onto the fire in her eyes.
She had already been inspired by the quartz, their ability to handle their station, the way they carried themselves, their talent for command. But now she would see more of what made this gem who they were, through their handling of an unconventional request-- one that Padparadscha felt she needed resolution for. This would show her, ultimately, whether this was a gem she could count on. Still, she dwelt on the cold tone of 7XB's order, and tried to dispel her uneasiness. She stood, straight-backed and prepared for the commander's next order.
It was a force of habit, this battle-ready state that 7XB found themselves slipping into so easy, muscles practically quivering with anticipation; They were not one to lose control, though, as the Sapphire had well seen throughout the course of the drill, and now was no exception. Assuming a half crouched battle stance, their voice echoed clearly, both to the rubies and the sapphire, gems dwarfed by comparison to them.
"When faced with a much smaller opponent," the Quartz began, clearly more than willing to make this as educational as possible, " you will find that most larger gem's first instinct is to rush forward" and then, as if to say 'like so' 7XB began to lumber forward, though in a very staged, demonstrational way. "This is, in many cases, simply a diversion. Trying to put you on the defensive." Easy enough so far. "But," they continued, a pair of glimmering blades sliding, both graceful and menacing, from the yellow diamond sigils upon their forearm, "Don't count on it. Most of the time it's a good idea to move. But be ready for it, do so on your terms."
The quartz seemed a whole lot bigger coming at her, even in a measured way. A primitive sense for danger shot off in her like a flare, but she stood her ground. As much as she could, she didn't let her expression waver-- she knew this gem was well accustomed to instruction, but now she feared making herself look like a fool in front of them. With no intention of letting this get the better of her, she looked straight into 7XB's eyes while they acted out the scenario, and gave a nod to show her understanding.
In a situation like the quartz described, her heightened analytical ability for reading gems may come as an advantage-- she would be able to gauge, more or less, whether the gem in question was coming at her with the genuine intention of bowling her over, or if they were intending on giving her a fake-out. At the same time, she was use to being cornered into resistance, being unable to retaliate. 'On the defensive' was her default setting. "But how can I avoid being at the mercy of such a gem? If their intention is to force me to defend?" Gingerly, she lifted her blades toward the emblems of 7XB's gauntlets.
Though it was part of their demonstration, their 'charge' towards the other gem served another purpose as well: 7XB was testing her moxy, her resolve. Most, if not all, other gems in Padparadscha's position would have fled by now, deciding that they would rather not face the quartz in even the most fictional of battles, or any other gem for that matter.
They understood the reasoning behind it, it was obvious that not all gems were made for combat, it just wasn't their purpose. And, well, they were a firm believer in such ideals. But still, they couldn't imaging being a zircon and pouring over files or..any other kind of gem besides a soldier really.
"Well, if youknow you're going to buckle beneath their advance, you sort of have an advantage," they explained. "They don't know that. You're already one step ahead, do you see?" So used to training rubies, it was some effort to educate at a higher level. "If your already one step ahead, you can use that time to think up the next, then the next." Etc.
Her eyes flicked down as she thought through the scenario again. If the quartz had come at her in a real fight, aiming to take her down, what would she have done? Jumping back, she wouldn't have escaped the momentum of a gem like the commander. It was easy to appreciate the range of their reach from her current vantage point, and knew that dodging to the side might mean not being able to escape an arm-span of similar width. She considered whether she had the prowess of footwork to make a head-long dodge, passing under or around the oncoming gem, without being tripped and compromised from such a showy tactic.
Nonetheless, she took what 7XB said as true. She was unable to quiet her constant internal interpretation of other gems, as was her Diamond-bestowed talent that had given her purpose. Even as this demonstration had been carried out, she scanned the quartz, and sensed the dual nature of their intentions. It seemed almost ludicrous for her to imagine prevailing in a quarrel such as described. But, the sapphire had been designed with conflict in mind at the very least, or else she wouldn't have been given the daggers she wielded. She could have the upper hand, if she let herself have it.
"One step ahead..." She echoed, and her eyes flicked back up to meet 7XB's austere gaze,"Understood,"
For once, it was refreshingly nice to have a pupil that comprehended them the first time, negating the need for any repetition. "Good." 7XB states, retracting those ivory blades back into their heavy gauntlets, for the time being, at least. "So, what IS your next move?" They were, if being quite truthful, eager to see how the sapphire comprehended the concepts of their world, the world of a soldier.
She was intelligent, of that the quartz had no doubt, but this was not a file, or some diplomatic relation, it was war. The realm of agates, quartz, topaz, rubies- it would be an interesting answer to be sure? In many ways, that could be her safest option, the most instinctual, but 7XB knew more than any that a situation could change for the worst at the drop of a hat. As such, a plan, or a battle, should be a living thing. Fluid. It was hard to tell exactly what your opponent was thinking, unless you have future powers, that is. But with practice, one could count on at least staying in the ballpark- it was here, 7XB imagined, that the Padparadscha could excell.
The gem lifted her chin as she considered her options. "Well," She began,"I suppose it would depend on my read of the gem, and how quickly they are moving...I certainly don't want to be on the business end of those blades," She nodded toward the quartz's versatile gauntlets, somewhat relieved that they'd sheathed the ulterior purpose of their weaponry,"If I need to move fast, yet take control of the situation..." With swift, graceful steps, she ducked under 7XB's arm and twisted around their flank, before giving a choreographed swing that halted just short of their inner knee,"Perhaps I need to move behind, defense becoming offense?"
This maneuver would be risky, especially against a more experienced opponent. But, she knew that a taller gem could see more of their surroundings, and act on them quickly if they weren't delayed. Getting out of their line of sight quickly may come as an advantage, if some diversion could be given, or if the gem had too much momentum to stop immediately. In a real battle, she could use her defensive ability, throwing hot liquid at them to stall their advance, though she wanted to consider this a practice of pure technique.

This Roleplay is a prequel to Steven Universe to an extent with some slight retconing and its own progression to the story that will turn out differently to how stuff plays out in the show. Thanks to the message by Rose Quartz several gems are rising up to protect Earth and have labelled themselves as the Crystal Gems. Others on earth are remaining aligned to Homeworld though despite the isolation of Earth from Homeworld
All gems on earth are still stranded, the communication hub is still offline and all the space warps are shattered, it has now been revealed that this is the work of Rose Quartz and her small group known as the Crystal gems. They have rebelled against Homeworld and have chosen to protect the Earth (Trapping themselves on Homeworld to keep the warps down).
Now both sides are fighting among themselves along with fighting against the 'Corruption' a virus is infecting many gems turning most of them into mindless monsters, but those with a stronger will seem to becoming something more sinister.
The Game has changed now. The question has finally been posed, are you against Homeworld or allied with them. Or do you have your own agenda that may or may not been assisted by the ‘Corruption’.
