"That's a very good point," 7XB noted, clearly having been leading her to this realization. Yes, you could always predict what your enemy was going to do, but until they do it you wont know for sure. As such, you had to be ready for anything. "But you can never rely on your opponent's actions. Only your own."
She ducked then around them, easily sidestepping the unprepared quartz, using the largeness of their form against them. "Very good!" They exclaimed, almost surprised as they pivoted to face her, first their head then the rest of their substantial body. "Use their size against them!" Had it been a real fight, she may have gotten at least a momentary advantage. "But they can do the same to you." They lifted a foot, over her head to demonstrate how a larger gem, or other enemy, may attempt to crush or fall upon her. "They may be ready for it. But you have the right idea, your Clarity." Quickly they returned their foot to the ground, balance regained as the Quartz gem planted them firmly in the gravel.
She listened, intent on 7XB's words, and was a little taken aback by the quartz's revelation. "But you can never rely on your opponent's actions. Only your own." In all of the confrontations she had been in, she'd spent her time consumed with trying to calculate where her opponent would come from next. Her truth sense had been something she had instinctively relied upon in every waking moment of her life, yet, it hadn't made her any better in combat to this point. Perhaps it hadn't been used to its fullest potential within this realm-- no wonder she was always on defense. Still, could she rely on herself in such conflict?
She wasn't expecting praise, the old corundum who had been her mentor before stayed away from expressing such things. But she took the words whole and returned a genuine, radiant smile to the quartz who had accepted the role as her new mentor, for the time being at least.
Padparadscha remained focused as 7XB continued to speak. When they feigned their retaliation to her maneuver, her shoulders floated up in very real tension until the commander squared themselves again. She trusted the gem, but it was still intimidating to be in their shadow.
"I see, so I need to keep moving," She contemplated out-loud,"They'd surely be anticipating that move again,"
Despite the fact that their 'fight' was purely demonstrational and for nothing other than the sake of training, the Clear Quartz could still notice the tension that periodically overtook their 'opponent', the regal Padparadscha going stiff each time 7XB mimiced any kind of attack or movement. They often didn't not think about how menacing they must appear to other gems- it was just a part of how they were cut, part of being a Quartz. Normally served them quite well. When beasts and, rarely, other gems decided to run and hide rather than fight, it saved them a whole lot of time.
To her credit, Padparadscha was holding strong, and possessed a refreshingly inquisitive mind. "Exactly. If they're trying to find you, you can bet most of them won't have much time to think up a defense. Puts you in control. But only as much as you allow yourself to be." It's easy to say that, of course, when you step seven feet tall.
She nodded, and took a moment to again practice her fancy footwork as she contemplated the quartz's words. She paced, with the deliberate, dance-like steps of her style. "only as much as you allow yourself to be." She was beginning to feel more loose, her muscles warmed up as she got more use to being in the pit. In battle, she couldn't let herself be contained by her barriers, fearful of making the wrong move-- or of her opponent. Movement, the evolution of her passes and throws, seemed to be the focus of the moment's discussion. It was a dire mistake to halt this flow, yet it was something she'd often succumbed to in her past.
"I'll have to allow it, then," She said with conviction, both to herself and 7XB. After eons of being an easy target, needing to be protected by other gems, the tides of battle had never been in her own hands. Always, she had been at the mercy of others. Now with the words of a real soldier to chew on, she continued her pensive dance. In the court, she never doubted her ability to make a sound judgement, so why was it so hard to trust herself in a different sort of court? In the field, a gem like 7XB played the role of judge, jury, and executioner. They were a different cut of gem, meant for their purpose, but Padparadscha's eyes were alight as she regarded the purpose of her own weaponry-- to help her survive in her darkest hours.
In the midst of her paces, she drew her katar close to her body-- her feet swept along the gravel and she slid in close to the ground, then made a feigned passed at 7XB's ankle, a bit of a playful smirk on her lips as she popped back onto her heels in-stance. She kept herself moving, twirling around the huge gem, avoiding their reach and field of vision.
The Quartz could see their unusual pupil relaxing, unwinding before them as her movements grew more fluid and dance-like; She had practically melted compared to the rigid, uncomfortable sapphire would had insisted upon this lesson only minutes ago. The heat of battle was, truly, very much like dancing in some regards, requiring participants to become almost serpentine in order to come out intact, or at the very least without a crack upon their precious gem. However, as was to be expected with such a multifaceted topic as combat, there are times when one is better served staying motionless. For the sake of their point, though, they would focus upon evasion and the limits of it's practicality.
Hardly cracking a smile at the sapphire's antics (though that was not to say they weren't amused) 7XB stepped forward swiftly, disappearing in a blur a mere moment before Padparadscha would have crossed in front of them with a inpecably timed spin dash, spitting gravel in every direction until their reappeared at the opposite side of the put, trying somewhat to mask a bemused grin- one had to show off now and again, no? "And some attacks," they continued with seemless composure, "make evasions impractical."
She missed a step and stumbled a bit, not expecting the counter to her prancing. Her natural defense shot up around her, and spared her from the spray of gravel. When the curtain of glowing hot liquid dropped, her eyes were wide. She had no idea how she would deal with such a maneuver, aside from retreating behind her defense. Of course she had seen quartz soldiers use similar techniques, but it had shaken her to be so close to it, being faced with this superb soldier's own particular interpretation of the tactic. She crossed her arms, and furrowed her brows. She would be forced to employ her powers, just as she had done now. By the Diamonds, If a gem like 7XB had gone the other direction with it, she would have been shredded. Her ability was versatile, but she could think of many times where it had become a liability. Many gems were built with heat-resistance, which would effectively leave her becoming a luminous target.
She bit her lip as she paced back and forth, deep in thought as she scrutinized what she'd seen and heard. "Impractical indeed," was all the sapphire could manage when she peered back out to the other side of the arena. She supposed that in such a scenario, she would have to find a way to be lifted out of the situation all together. She would have to rely on the expert's advice in this instance,"So, what now is the question on my mind? It seems...well..." impossible to overcome is what she wanted to say, but she knew that would sound like fool talk to the ears of a programmed fighter, "A difficult spot to be in,"
Obviously , there was never a point where the sapphire was in danger: 7XB would never had done it without total confidence in their own ability to control their movements; As fast as they had appeared to be moving, each and every inch the Quartz travelled was tightly controlled. As much as was possible, anyway. Regardless, it had served a very specific purpose, to cause the very reaction it had, to raise the same, unspoken questions.
"And that, your Clarity," they said with a weary sort of smile, brushing a lock of loose, bone-bleached hair from their eyes, crouching easily to sit on their haunches, "Is the right question."
The most important lesson they could ever teach any gem about fighting, rubies included, was what they couldn't teach them. Luck, instinct, experience, these were not without merit. "And the only one who can really give you an answer is..well, it's you, I'm afraid." One of the rubies stood to begin clapping, only a single syllable leaving them before they were silenced with a steely look sliced in their direction.
Marginally, it was frustrating for Padparadscha to hear that. Her lips parted as if she were going to speak, then she put them together in a hard line. She couldn't imagine having to rely on herself in such a situation, and for a few moments, was glad she was typically far from the front lines of battle. This certainly wasn't what she was made for. But, it wasn't a part of her programming to give up on her goals. She had set out to improve her prowess, on top of her prospecting of the clear quartz. Already, this exercise had revealed much about 7XB's character, as a gem and a soldier. A personality shaped by battle, and hard-won skill-- that much had been apparent, but there were idiosyncrasies in the way they dealt in this situation that left her wondering more about the gem.
The sapphire glanced up at the rubies, almost forgetting their existence as she was consumed in this mock altercation. Then, her gaze settled onto the quartz who had squared up on the other end of the arena. Her arms unfurled, bringing her katar down to her sides. Whatever 7XB did next, she didn't know how to be prepared for it, or whether she should even dwell on such things. What am I going to do next, she thought, That's the question, it seems. She squared into her stance, blades up and in front of her, as ready as she could be.
As was easily told by her stance, Padparadscha knew that they were not finished quite yet. 7XB was quite pleased with this adaption of her's, though anyone would be hard pressed to tell- their face had yet again become a stoic mask as they plotted their own trajectory, lips lightly pursed as the Quartz's steely, granite eyes fell heavy upon the opposing gem. They savored this moment in a way, the clearing of one's mind in the moments leading up to battle, a feeling very much like adrenaline building in their chest.
Then, like the cracking of a whip, they lurched forward, a momentary flash of white light visible as their smoldering blades flashed into existence in the exact moment 7XB spin-dashed forward yet again, barreling towards the Sapphire quite dangerously.
With her mind racing, Padparadscha grimaced-- her body locked up, reminiscent of the way 2FG had frozen in the arena earlier. A white-knuckled grip on the handles of her blades, she didn't blink. No matter what direction she went in, the quartz would be able to turn on a dime and tear her into ribbons with those glinting blades. Half-seconds away from having to react, her instincts took over, she did the first thing her reflexes could muster-- a column of hot plasma launched 2 meters into the air with a considerable speed, though too fast for her to keep her footing on it in her confounded state. She slipped but managed to grab the edge as she continued to let the column rise, more and more slowly as the older bits of the substance at the bottom gassed off and became more like cooling magma.
The sapphire managed to get her mind back down to reality as she tried to shake off her growing fear, especially with the quartz coming at her with terrifying speed. She had to stay in the present, or she'd end up over-taken a whole lot sooner than she wanted to be.
One may be wondering what 7XB's intent was, coming at the Sapphire so suddenly, as if this were a real fight and not a glorified demonstration. The answer was simple, and at this point should go without explanation. Demonstration or not, 7XB would be doing her a disservice if they coddled her or watered down any aspect of the training. She was skilled at reading gems, surely, but this was to be the ultimate test, in 7XB's mind, of Padparadscha's ability to think on her feet, especially when the situation was anything but calm. A gem had to find their own peace within.
And so far, it seemed to be going well!
She vanished from sight in a flash of hot plasma, the Quartz skidding to a half merely a half yard beneath her. 'Impressive' they mused quietly, 'but she isn't the only one who knows how to play with plasma'. As luck would have it, 7XB also possessed the ability to manipulate the substance, but for a much more.. martial purpose. Their left arm shot up, palm up and held much like a weapon, a ball of clear, searing plasma making a trajectory towards her, their right hand braced beneath their elbow. "Think fast." What did the humans say? Hit potatoes?
She scrabbled up onto the top of her column, only to see 7XB lining up their shot. Again, there was no time for her to sit around, but her body wasn't cooperating with her. Her legs wobbled as adrenaline sent cold shivers down her spine. By almost pure luck, she backed off of her perch just as the shot flung centimeters from her head-- however, she fell a little more than 2 meters through the air and landed on her back-- "Uff!" the gravel knocked the wind out of her. The column wilted as she gritted her teeth, pushed herself back up to her feet, and found her bearings again. She called the plasma back to her, reincorporating into the pool that boiled around her feet. Her cheeks were red-hot with embarrassment, but she exhaled, knowing a quick recovery was all she could do until the commander's next throw.
This is intense, she managed to get a thought past her adrenaline fueled haze. If she had a passing pity for the rubies before, now she felt she could fully empathize. 7XB didn't play games, they were already pushing her farther than she had expected. But, she didn't blame them-- battle was life or death. Right now, they had total control of the situation. She had to think of a way to gain the upper hand.
They could have rushed forward to save her to a nasty fall, and 7XB very likely would have succeeded, had they attempted it. It wasn't that they did not consider it, of course they did, and in retrospect, maybe they should have done so, but for the purposes of the drill it just didn't seem appropriate. They didn't coddle the rubies, true, but she was a much more important cut of gem than either them or even 7XB.
"Are you alright there, your Clarity?" Even as they asked, calling forth that same sense of tact they had used so skillfully before, they never altered their position, muscles still tightly coiled as if to strike, which they still may at any moment. "We can bring this demonstration to a close, If you wish it." It was her party after all. They didn't want to push anything too far. Not with a gem so far above their level, but I'd she wanted REAL combat, they would give it to her.
The wavering of 7XB's feelings in the wake of her misstep were hardly readable, but she realized that the quartz may be dealing with a bit of anxiety about this situation she had put them in. In truth, she found herself a little surprised at the quartz's extension. In the midst of it all, she'd nearly lost her sense of the place of things. For a moment, she almost wanted to take their offer and be done with it. Her clumsy mistake had her feeling weary, but again, she reminded herself that this was her choice, that she had a score to settle with herself, and she had already gleaned so much from it. It hardly felt like a demonstration to her at this point, sensing the controlled ferocity in 7XB's every twitch, but perhaps that was for the better. She was tired of letting herself fail in the face of adversity, being at the whims of others. A difficult opponent would teach her more than an empty court-room office.
"No," She uttered,"I can keep at it," At least, she hoped she could. With a moment to collect herself, she stretched her arms, and re-assumed her stance. She concentrated, and considered every movement that had transpired up to this point. With renewed spirit, she stared back at the quartz, ready to counter their next move.
"Hm..as you say." They replied deliberately, eyes laying heavy upon the freshly-battered Sapphire. There was no doubt in 7XB's mind now that she possessed the dedication required to at least be able to learn the most basic combat, techniques that she may well need in the future in order to defend herself either from a surprise attack, or due to the failings of those gems who had been designated as her protectors. And yes, the Quartz was still rather wary about the whole prospect, but if something they had taught could ever possibly save her valuable life, then so be it. As it was, she had already done very well. However, she had, thus far, been content to let 7XB make every major move so far, and that was about to change.
The quartz remained incredibly still, like a granite statue, ancient and battered, their eyes focused upon Padparadscha with a hawkish readiness. 'After you.' they seemed to be saying.
