There was something even more intimidating about 7XB as they stood, an ivory pillar in front of her. The light glanced off of their eyes, like readied blades. However, Padparadscha felt more accustomed to this now, and she returned a flaring, focused gaze. She calculated the distance between them, and knew that the quartz would expect what they'd seen so far, just as she expected that they were prepared to strike in any moment or direction. Danger tinged the air, despite the fact that she had been reminded of the commander's decorum. Stripped of all things civil, as was often the case in confrontation, power or victory couldn't be determined by titles.
She gripped her katar, then sprinted straight at the towering gem. Seconds into her dash, she sent a sheet of blistering plasma across the gravel. Either they would stand their ground, or avoid it-- she already knew how she would proceed
NOW they were getting somewhere! The little Sapphire was trying to put them on the defensive for once, barreling towards them at a rather quick pace. Truthfully, they weren't expecting the white-hot lob of plasma that was hurtling towards them. Seemingly Padparadscha had finally broken out of her rut, throwing a metaphorical curve ball at 7XB and leaving them with only two options: Evade, or get a rather unpleasant burn. While they were more than capable of taking a shower in hot plasma, they found evasion a far more favorable course of action- no need to get burned so soon after last time.
As such, the mountain of quartz ducked low, only narrowly avoiding the shot as their sudden duck morphed into a roll, quickly repositioning themselves as to counterstrike. Building upon the momentum of this, they merged easily into a spin dash, and a rather flashy one at that, circling her once, then twice, as if corralling her like a wolf may do to sheep.
As 7XB circled her, the plasma she'd sent straight at them had landed-- steadily, it formed a mote of steaming, bubbling magma around both gems. Though not nearly as scalding when close, it was in a tacky, viscous state-- she hoped to slow the quartz up with it, at the very least. If she could snare them, that would be another thing, but she didn't count on it. Half of her mind was dedicated to manipulating the plasma, and the other half concentrated on the movements of the quartz. It was already difficult to maintain the copious amount she had assigned to the task of forming this ring-of-fire trap, but she needed to get out of this increasingly tight position.
She couldn't spare the amount it would take to eject herself as she had before, but she could generate enough within the zone of her reach to divert 7XB, and perhaps push them toward the noxious quagmire she'd created. She surrounded herself with a thin curtain of plasma at full- temperature, and knowing (or hoping) that the quartz would be able to react quickly enough to avert it, she sent it blasting across the radius between her and the rest of her plasma.
Being so absorbed in what they were doing, 7XB had allowed their rather single-minded approach to cloud their mind, resulting in them losing sight of the bigger picture- intentionally or otherwise. Having angled themselves in the direction of the sapphire mid-dash, the thought of the hardening plasma had left their mind as quickly as they had initially dodged it. Pausing momentily, and looking much like a spinning top as they did so, it was their intent to barrel towards Pad yet again. As they lurched forward to do so, however, they found themselves faced with a shield of searing plasma.
Eyes widen in surprise, they aimed to alter their course, suddenly finding themselves stuck in some manner of thick, viscous substance, bringing them to a sudden halt. "Ugh!" It was a clever tactic, and may give the other gem quite the advantage, but would she take it? Already they were beating themselves up over this, even as they pulled themselves out of the mire. How could they have been so..so foolish and single-minded? And in front of their rubies! They were already angry with themselves.
It...it worked! She couldn't let this chance pass, her energy had already been so drained from using her ability in so many consecutive maneuvers. While relieved that the quartz had evaded receiving any real injury from her tactics, she would have to keep herself rolling in order to secure control of the stage. She prepared herself to rush forward as the quartz fought with the plasma, which became increasingly cool and hardened
It stilted her for a fleeting moment when she realized anger prickled the air around 7XB-- she couldn't know what it was directed at, other than, well--her. Quartz soldiers were naturally aggressive, and some were downright volatile. Though the sapphire had been observing them for quite some time now, she still didn't know 7XB well enough to decide how they would proceed. At any rate, she was losing precious seconds, and trusted that they would be able to hold themselves together. My choice, she reminded herself.
Just as 7XB stumbled to the other side of the viscid flow, Padparadscha had dashed up from behind. In the same moment, she reactivated the plasma underneath her feet, and leaped up to bring herself on-level with the massive gem. Adrenaline had her heart pumping hard as she intended to bring her blade down to the quartz's nape, with her plasma to catch her before gravity could pull her into actually falling into the attack, or into the ground again.
The rather short tempered Clear Quartz could be seen growing increasingly frustrated in the moments leading up to Padparadscha's attack, their increasingly angry attempts to break free of the hot murk causing their internal thermostat to grow even hotter. "By the Diamonds," they exclaimed heatedly, white-house blades firing suddenly from the golden Diamond emblazoned upon their gauntlets. With a perhaps unnecessary ferocity, they sliced themselves free of the cooling plasma, sheer seconds before the lightening fast Katar would have made contact, or feign contact anyway.
They turned, barely able to register the blurring form that was the Sapphire, raw instinct bringing their left arm across their chest to parry, meeting their attacker head on- edge to edge. "Very good, " they said though partially gritted teeth, "threw me off for a second." As much as they wanted her to succeed, 7XB refused to hand her a victory. Breaking the parry with some ferocity, as they did, would likely push her back.
The gem's blades clashed, the clear ringing of metal bounced off of the cavernous arena walls. The immense force of the shock rippled up through her dagger, loosening her grip as the vibration shot through the rest of her-- it sent the lithe sapphire flipping through the air like a leaf. Despite not being sure which way was up or down, she managed to catch herself by the leg with the plasma she'd prepared just before her head would've smacked into the gravel. Her whole body shook as she tried to recover from the blow, and from another shock-- the quartz's usual composure had scattered to the wind. It no longer took a gem with her particular talent to see that they were practically smoking with ire at this point. She grimaced, her right wrist at taken strain from the hit. Still dizzy, she tried to gain a sense for where everything was, and most importantly, where 7XB was.
The sapphire almost regretted her move, though she just barely caught the quartz's words when she went sailing through the air. Had she known she would've caused them this irritation she may have went a different route-- but there was nothing she could do about that now. Still, she had broken through the blast-doors of 7XB's calm guise, and was beginning to see another side of them. There was no telling what they would do next, so she rallied her spirit and let out a breathy exhale. Much of her plasma had hardened at this point, and so couldn't be reincorporated into her new generations, but she extracted what she could and flung herself up onto her feet, atop a rather thin pole of plasma.
7XB was, sometimes by their own, not-so-humble admission, was rather skilled in close combat, their beloved weapon giving them equal suitability to both fist and the blade. They blew a lock of bone-bleached hair from their steel-coated eyes, smoldering dangerously. If swordplay was what she wanted, 7XB could show her a thing or two.
They had to, constantly, remind themselves of the unimportance of this fight, it was just training, after all, but they would not willingly allow themselves to lose and thus sully their impeccable reputation Infront of those who were most important. Speaking of the rubies, they were each and all on their feet, bright red faces following their commander across the arena.
7XB flexed each of their fingers, a faint pop coming from each as they curled into their palm, stiffening. Silence. Intimidation. That was a very visceral, real part of battle.
Padparadscha stood atop her perch, with her feet seated into it securely. Her eyes narrowed slightly as she assessed the gem before her. The katar in her grips were, too, meant for when the confrontation became more personal than she was comfortable with. However, against a gem with such a reach and experience, and especially in their heated state, it wouldn't be easy to get in close. She regarded her ability as probably the only thing that could bring her, literally and figuratively, on some kind of eye-level with the quartz. I can hold out, she thought, trying to ignore the aches that stung her delicate musculature. It had been some time since the last time she'd been bothered by such a sensation. Was it a bad thing if she found herself becoming a bit elevated from it?
Her pole of reactivated plasma lurched forward, and using it like a bungee cord, the sapphire flung in an arch over the distance and the quartz's head, attempting to get behind them again. She prepared the foot of the pole for a quick maneuver, depending on 7XB's counter, though she kept in mind that she was running out of the vitality to keep using her energy intensive manipulation.
Though the quartz gem rarely considered it, the very issue that Padparadscha now found herself facing was one of the contributing factors of many of 7XB's victories- they just kept going, and going. They were a quartz soldier, after all, it was in their programming. Yellow Diamond was a warrior goddess, and didn't suffer inadequate soldiers amongst her numbers. As such, her Kindergartners prided themselves in their well-honed ability to cultivate superior Quartz soldiers.
And like the old saying goes, they dont make 'em like they used to.
Unnoticed by 7XB, other gems, who had apparently intended on using the arena themselves, had arrived and, curious about the unorthodox sparring match occurring, had lingered- A Jasper and two Topaz, and two Amethyst.
Either way, rather then attempt an overhead parry, they tucked and rolled to the side, allowing her to bury her blade in the gravel if she followed through with get strike. Clearly they were drawing the duel, which it now seemed to be, out. Popping back up, 7XB lunged forward in a similar motion, both hands overhead as they propelled themselves towards her.
She was now feeling her own frustration rear up as her daggers rasped into the gravel, and the quartz lunged at her once again, showing no signs of slowing up. Her life-line sprang back, and as she whipped through the air, trying to narrowly evade 7XB, she caught sight of the row of soldiers loitering near the stands-- much to her chagrin. She tried not to think about how she looked, a small court affiliate attempting to scrap with a full-sized quartz soldier, a well decorated one at that. There was no telling how long they had been standing there, quietly following the action. Far out of her element and station, she didn't know if it would look worse for her to quit now, or to keep at it.
Even through her resentment, she realized she had teased out more of 7XB's traits than she anticipated she would. Like herself, this gem wasn't a quitter. In a test of endurance, which this had quickly become, the quartz would win every time. The ludicrous nature of it all was suddenly getting to her, reminding her of her meagerness in the face of it-- of everything-- confrontation, the past, her skill, things to come. Maybe she had already gotten what she came for, maybe it wasn't worth it to keep going.
Still, her hot-headed nature wouldn't allow her to simply give in. It felt physically impossible at this point to just lay down in front of this present adversity. She grimaced, pushing herself to throw out the bottom of her post-- it pulled her down through the air more quickly, perhaps straight into her opponent's grasp, but sent the coil flinging toward 7XB's legs like a rope.
The slow trickle of the steadily building crowd of soldier gems didn't really phase 7XB- that was what the stands were intended for, were they not? They didn't necessarily enjoy it, though truthfully they were never opposed to have a spare witness or two to feats of skill. As it stood, however, this war of attrition was going to be drawn out ever longer than the quartz had expected. No one would blame the Sapphire for using her diamond-given abilities to protect herself, but it didn't make for very good sport, did it?
In the end, 7XB realized that they had lost the point of this somewhere along the way, much to their chagrin. Altering their course to avoid the resurgent plasma, they abandoned the frontal assault, instead dropping down directly before her, blades retracted before impact. "That.. that's enough." Their semi-transparent ivory face was almost a sky blue at this point, flush with exertion.
She came skidding to a halt, her eyes widened. 7XB snapped her out of her adrenaline fueled inertia with their words. Standing there, she realized how extraordinarily drained she felt. That was more activity than she had put herself through in ages, and more sustained, one-on-one combat than she had ever experienced. It was something, though she wasn't sure what to call it yet. Grueling? Character building? More punishment than she could withstand?
Yet, she was in fact, still standing. If the increasingly heated melee had gone on, perhaps she wouldn't be. It took all she had to stop herself from quivering, feeling much more self-conscious now that everything had been interrupted. She wondered if she should've had the good sense to plan this for a later date, instead of a spontaneous run. But, that's how things often went for her-- impromptu encounters often yielded the best kinds of data, not being scripted or contrived to bias the outcome. The 7XB she had met some short time ago was not the same 7XB she saw in front of her now.
There were many things that she wanted to say, but she wasn't sure if she should, especially not with common bystanders listening. She wasn't even sure if she could manage to utter a word in her current state, but she wanted to try anyway. "Thank you, commander," She expressed, her exhaustion tinging her usually clear voice. For what she was thanking them-- this information gathering opportunity, and, for breaking her stupor before she gave out in front of a group of spectators.
Glancing around at the gathered crowd, 7XB seemed to change quite drastically, the raging bull receding much like a lake under the unforgiving sun, leaving nothing but the same, cold mask of indifference as before, an inpenatrable bastion they could easily retreat behind. 'What are they looking at?' they spewed with annoyance, the color easily fading from their face as if some switch had been flipped. After the departure of the fire that had smoldered so brightly, their eyes looked cold and hazy by comparison.
"But of course, Your Clarity." They said, a flick of their wrists disposing of their trusted gauntlets as to cross those burly limbs across their chest. "It was my pleasure." By now, as it seemed the excitement was over, the other gems had begun to disperse, or chat amongst themselves, or both. "I hope you found our little demonstration instructive?" Whatever she has hoped to learn, they did not truly know.
Her glazed-over eyes floated to the the crowd as it broke apart. Part of her was becoming more apprehensive as they left, without knowing where the gossip about this would go. There weren't many Padparadscha Sapphires in the galaxy, let alone this star system. The other part of her was relieved to see them go, she felt she had more room to breathe. Her daggers dissipated and she sighed.
Her gaze drifted back over to meet 7XB's, and she witnessed their transformation, from one mode into another. They would again assume that hard exterior, making it difficult for her to decide what they could be thinking in any given moment. Along with the stress she was already feeling, it was easy for her to become a little irked at this. Being the gregarious gem that she was, she had many more things she wanted to say to and explore about 7XB, but she knew that they wouldn't be so guarded for no reason. Prying would likely spur them farther back into their cover, as she'd found out from past dealings with reserved gems.
"Oh, I've learned a great deal today," She manged to give a weary smile,"I...hmm...I'm glad to have had such an experience,"
