Both the clear quartz soldier and the Ruby alike stopped in their tracks at the sudden, terrifying screech ripped.through the entirety of the shattered vessel for several, solid seconds, only cut out so suddenly, as if someone had all at once changed a radio channel to something altogether quieter. “What..what was that, commander?” Asked the dumbfounded Ruby, sharing a look with their similiarly stricken commander that showed, without a doubt, that they had no idea. Wordless, the two gems hastened their steps to reach their employer, lest she spend too much time alone with.. whatever it was that had raised such a fuss.
The force of the violet gem’s shriek seemed to almost fight against the surface of the bubble, temporary if nothing else, glittering in the tinted light in such a way that it almost seemed to glare maliciously. The silence of the night, broken only by the rapid crescendo of approaching footsteps, was no longer malignant. In fact, even the sticky traps that covered the walls so densely began to slough off as if the will of the ship itself had held it in place.
And from within this substance, much like melted cream as it hit the deck, movement.
Her lip pulled down as the glue began to seep away, causing the surface she stood on to wobble. She eyed the captured gem core; part of her wanted to keep it where she could see it, but at the same time, she wanted to be out of its presence. It had been difficult to get to this point, and now that she knew how dangerous this thing was, she knew it needed careful surveillance. Even the chance that this core would get loose on her ship made her anxious, her pearl wasn't meant to have to deal with anything like this. Still, sooner or later it would have to be transferred to her ship.
As the glue trap began to seep away, the surface she had been standing on wobbled as it lost its composure. She and the bubbled gem lowered down, and Padpara worked to keep her balance. Then, out of her periphery, she spotted movement. The sapphire flinched and swiveled to face it, knowing it could be any manner of corruption or otherwise. However, nothing came bounding out of the dark except for the tapping of her comrades' feet as they neared.
After a moment, her eyes widened as she remembered what had happened to her a short time ago; the enthralled corruption had dropped her off in this place, and when she had struggled with the ooze, she'd sunken deeper into it. It didn't take much longer for her to realize where the corruptions would've taken 2FG if they had the chance-- and where the rest of the rubies were most likely taken.
"Ruby squad, Do you read?" She called out, then pressed her lips together as she waited for a response, searching the dim space around her.
Then came a series of blubbered noises from within the sludge, clearly in response to the Sapphire as it began to bubble and stir. Though it was hard to tell for sure unto whatever it was recovered from the muck. The matter was not made any easier by the fact that this melting substance continued to dribble downwards from the ceiling; However, while melting it's properties seemed to dilute, it's viscousness giving way you a more watery solution.
Then, like a zombie, or several zombies as it were, tiny red arms burst from the mess, following shortly by a succession of gasps, “Blek, we're here!” “Oh, thank you Diamonds!” “Ewwwww, it's still in my hair!”
These voices, though perhaps at one point indistinct, were quite definitely the missing rubies, and in those last moments before they came into view, 7XB’s heart pounded in their ears- could it truly be all of them? “Pa..Your Clarity!” They stumbled momentarily upon their declaration, but even their most serious of expressions couldn't hide the sheer relief that felt at finding their team. With purpose they stride through the sludge, plucking the nearest corridium out of it, “2FH!” How the quartz could tell each of them apart in as dim a light as this was a miracle.
She gave a heavy sigh, letting the burden of her fears for the other gems fall away. As she had suspected, the rubies were here; not only that, but they were as okay as they could be in this situation. A small smile pulled at the corner of her lips, and her eyes followed the shape of the quartz as they made there way around, recovering the rubies from their entrapment. It seemed that they hadn't lost a single gem on this mission, and not only that, but the objective had been completed. Her spirit was rekindling, but the passed events had stunned her, her glossed-over eyes wandered absently until she stared at the ground, the hint of a smile faded.
As she peered around her feet, she couldn't help but to notice the slippery gunk that had now coalesced around her feet. She pursed her lips and frowned, wondering at the nature of this substance. She pulled out one of the sample jars she'd packed for the mission, and carefully scooped some of the goo into the jar. She bubbled it, and sent it to the ship. Then, she glanced back over to the violet gem that sat suspended in the air next to her. Should she send it off yet, or continue to survey it? Still feeling a bit paranoid, she wasn't sure.
It wouldn't do to let down her guard. They weren't out of the woods yet. Padpara brought out her holoscreen, and tapped in the coordinates to reach her ship's communicator. In seconds, the servant's face appeared onto the screen and the sapphire spoke, "Pearl, I'm going to need you to hone in on our location. The closer you can get, the better. Watch out, there are possibly hundreds of corruptions in the area,"
"Affirmative, my sapphire!" The pearl's voice answered with more gusto than she usually spoke with. It seemed strange to Padpara, in the back of her mind she wondered if this was really her pearl she was speaking to. But it was an irrational fear, she tried to ignore it. Then, she turned toward the rest of her team as they gathered together.
"Everyone, regroup and stay alert. We're going to find our way out of here, now," She gave the reminder to everyone, including herself, and tried to keep her brain working,"Commander, I trust you have the prototype and the data chip?"
While the Rubies took the time to catch up and scrape whatever amount of the foul substance they could from their bodies and tangled hair, 7XB turned to approach Padparadscha, pausing to linger just a moment longer as she made contact with her Pearl- It was a relief that she could get a signal through, and the thought of a potential extraction was more than pleasing to the gem’s aching joints. In all of these thousands of years, the clear Quartz could rarely remember ever feeling this old.
“Your Clarity..” they began hushedly, flirting a glance over their shoulder before easing a hand down onto her’s, “I'm glad you're safe.” Their words carried a warmth uncharacteristic of the quartz, at least when it came to most gems. “And..” there was even more, the shadow of a smile curling upwards upon the corner of their lips, “thank you..for..you know..” they cleared their throat, stifling the sound with their free hand, “for saving my team.” They had been so very worried for the little gems, comrades they had led around the universe for so long. But now it was back to business, materializing the precious data chip from wherever it was on their person that they had tucked it away, a grimmer expression taking center stage upon their furrowed brow. "I..yes, we recovered the prototype, but the situation necessitated its destruction to prevent it from falling into the hands of the enemy." That was all a very proper way to describe what they and 2FG had been forced to do, but it wasn't exactly untrue. "It was similar in appearance to the previous, if that's any help."
The working-mind she had tried to maintain was fuddled, tripping over itself as 7XB made their approach. She avoided their eyes, her body still chilled and numb by shock. Sorely, she didn't want to appear weak to them, no matter how much she felt that she was. But, then as they took her hand, her cheeks flushed over. The gentle warmth of their grasp, their smile, and their words radiated over her, igniting a sense of security that had eluded her so much when she had been alone. It came as a reminder that this gem had already seen her during a series of weak moments, and as they offered their genuine gratitude, she met their eyes. Padpara wasn't quite sure what to say, her lips parted, then came back together for a moment. Though, before she could think of anything to say, the quartz moved on to answer her prior question.
She took the chip, and slid it back into her holopanel as she listened, nodding. If 7XB found something to be necessary, she would fully trust their judgement-- it hadn't been possible to get data for the records, but at least the thing was destroyed."as long as its thoroughly dispatched, our objective is completed. Perhaps on the way back to base, you can give me more specific details about it," She gave a curt, final nod. Saying that out loud brought her mind into the present; the objective had truly been met, and now they could leave and go back to Headquarters together, just like they'd said they would before. "All in all, we've beaten some odds here. I would call this a total success. About the rubies...I'm sorry they got lost in the first place, I'm just relieved that they're alright," She gave a bit of a nervous chuckle. Only minutes ago she had been dreading the worst possible outcomes. Her eyes glimmered as moisture collected in them, she tried to blink it away,"7XB, I'm so glad that you're here," Her lips pressed together, she wanted to jump into their arms and forget about the dark malevolence that had tried so hard to destroy all of them.
Knowing that the pearl was in-bound, she began to think it was time to do away with 1AA. She turned to the gem who had sat stewing in the bubble near her, and gave it a tap to send it off. A stab of panic came as it disappeared. She gave a sigh, and rolled her shoulders to try to wriggle that feeling away. A confirmation blip on her paneltold her that Pink Pearl had sent her the coordinates to the ship's landed position. Her eyes flickered down to read it. "Pearl is parked due north," Then, she looked back up to the soldier. She was very eager to get out of here, though it was nice to have a moment to be with the quartz, and to soak in the feeling of success.
It was an extraordinarily unique feeling this, the sensation that warmed the Quartz's limbs and more when they shared any sort of proximity with the sapphire. Throughout the course of this mission, baring the rare exception in moments of relative security, 7XB had done everything they could to put it from their mind. However, now that they were more or less in the clear, as it currently seemed, the quartz soldier was astutely aware of the fact that this was something they were going to have to deal with..together. They became keenly aware of the bubbled gem in that moment, eyes drifting across it. In their logical mind, they knew that the destructive gem was in perfect stasis inside of the bubble, but they couldn't shake the feeling that it was watching them.
“It wasn't your fault, Your Clarity,” they mused gently, secretly quite a bit relieved when she sent the peach bubble away, at least for the time being. Her continued speech dispelled this concern, the regrouped Rubies gathering up with the expectation of moving out fairly soon. “I'm..glad you are here, too.” They barely breathed this before they turned to face the little gems they became so keenly aware of.
“Listen up!” They began sternly, parrotting what the soft spoken gem had said, “Pearl has brought the pod down just north of here. We're tracing our steps backward. Got it?” With 2FG taking point, the tiny gems rushed.forward, as eager to depart the chamber as they were to get back to base, leaving the Quartz and Padparadscha alone, if only for a moment. “Padparadscha, I..”
Part of her wanted to argue on that, she did feel it was her fault for even bringing their rubies into this dangerous situation, and for not keeping closer tabs on her team members. Instead, she smiled, letting her mood be lifted even more by 7XB's words before they turned to give orders to their subordinates. Her brows floated up at how quickly the rubies were ready, and it made her feel a little antsy to see them go. Hopefully they wouldn't get lost again. She almost stepped after them, then the quartz turned to her and said her name.
She halted as if she had been struck by a bolt of lightening. These would be the last moments she could indulge in this feeling with 7XB before the two of them would be again surrounded by gems who wouldn't understand. As much as she wanted to be back in the safety of her office, she felt she had to stay by this soldier's side. She racked her mind for ways that it could happen. But, she knew reality of this situation, that they would have to go their separate ways when they touched down in the Moonbase hanger. The realization twisted in her chest. Perhaps she would get to be with them again one day; she remembered well that the quartz shared her yearning to keep whatever this was alive. But, undoubtedly, there was no sure telling when she would get to even see them, or hear their voice.
No longer able to hold herself back, the sapphire rushed in to be closer to them, and took the soldier's hand into both of hers. She searched their whole shape, before settling on their eyes. There were so many things left to know about this gem, and the baffling emotions they invoked in her, but so little time to spend with them."7XB?" She gripped their hand. With too much she wanted to say, she didn't know where to start, her mind began to trip over itself again.
If the quartz gem had felt warm before, then they must have been absolutely on fire as the tiny Sapphire took hold of their hand, her own so delicate, fragile, in comparison. Constantly 7XB was reminded not only of their difference in rank, but size as well, and they found themselves worrying again that they might somehow damage or..hurt the Sapphire in some way. They never noticed just how big and clumsy they were until..until all this had happened, until they had handled her so gently.
It was certainly not a task the rugged quartzite gem was designed for.
They bent at the quivering knee, plummeting to reach her eye level. They knew that time was short, a handful moments at best, before they needed to fall in place behind the rubies. There was, in truth, no time to say anything at all. Anything worthwhile, anyway. That was not, to say, that something important couldn't be done. They leaned in briefly, lips stealing the last syllable of their own name from hers.
She hadn't forgotten about this way of expressing oneself that 7XB had taught her, nor the way it made her feel; as if she were afloat, giddy, yet empowered by the fact that they had chosen to share this with her. Everything that the two wanted to say could be said all at once, and knowing that the soldier felt the same as she did was still so surreal but wonderful. She gripped their hand as their lips pressed to hers, wishing that this moment could last.
Her hands fell away from theirs, and she threw her arms around them to give them a tight hug, pulling herself closer. Everything that had happened between them made her wonder; was she the same gem she was when she left base? Had the quartz uncovered something she never knew about herself, let alone them, or had something changed? Had it been both? Her investigative mind stewed on it. Why had this happened? After everything, it was somewhat easy for her to see why this gem, who had caught her eye from the start with their gravitas and decorum, continued to captivate her. They weren't just effective, they were passionate, thoughtful, ambitious, and devoted. They'd been there, and held her up through adversity with their sheer strength and will, she couldn't help being impressed and enchanted by them.
She would have to think more on that at a later time. Her arms loosened as she pulled away, but her giddy smile couldn't be contained. Her eyes sparkled as she looked into 7XB's immaculate gaze, and brought her hand up to trace their jawline as she basked in the moment. There wouldn't be another one like it, at least not for a while. Then, she gave a light sigh. Inevitably they would have to get going.
It lasted only a second, yes, but what a wonderful moment it was. This strangeness had yet to stop electrifying the Quartz; the only feeling even faintly comparable to this in their mind was the time they had been struck by lightening, but that had been very many years ago when 7XB was just another fresh cut in a squad full of them. This was a decidedly more pleasant experience that that, admittedly, but it was still the closest thing that 7XB could think of.
They brought a single arm around her body in response to the hug, applying the slightest pressure before their time was up. And then it was.
Their own, coy grin followed her smile, spiriting upwards as they rose upwards. “After you, Your Clarity.” They said with a motion towards the passage, falling quickly in place behind once she did. They were reallt quite ready for a rest. Fortunately, the tracing of their steps backwards was very uneventful, and soon they would step out into the mid-day light, pod on laid upon the very edge of the ship's shadow- no longer menacing.
Back to the Base, back to their home away from Homeworld. Back to life as they knew it.
