Her heart sank as she caught 7XB's words. The shadow surged up through the water. It circled the two of them, then lurched away in response to the impact at the water's surface. Padparadscha's eyes flickered as she tried to keep track of it from where she was, then tried to consider options. There wasn't enough energy left in her to create a barrier, as she might have in different circumstances, aside the water would make it extremely difficult to maintain such a form. She bit her lip and thought about the chances that there might be other dangers lurking nearby-- would using her ability ultimately be a liability here? Was there anything she could do?
Just as the thought crossed her mind, the creature burst over the surface of the water, it's long head parted into two halves filled with razor-like teeth, some of which seemed jagged, shattered, but monstrous. "Ah!" She yelped, almost losing her grip as she recoiled, water showered over them as the beast's dripping jaws came in to strike.
Again, the quartz was hardly given any time to react, much less a spare moment to conjure their weapon out of the ether. No, it seemed they would have to make due with the makeshift baton they had fashioned for themselves, their body reacting instinctively.
Their instinct was, naturally, to punch the creature, despite the bar they clung to, passing by the jagged teeth as the creature's maw threatened to close around their hand in a rather grizzly display. Luckily, the bar served to keep their jaws from closing, at least for the moment.
Startled, and with wide eyes, they released the rod and stepped back, arching their other fist across the creature's face, hoping to land a nice one/two combo.
Padparadscha regained her grip just in time to see 7XB strike back at the creature, lock its jaws open and jab it square in the side of its head. It was knocked back into a gurgling, thrashing rage as it tried to bite down on the ragged stone. The stone bent in its maw, but wouldn't give. The sapphire was so jittery that she couldn't contain her excitement at this momentary victory. "Ha! Take that!" she cheered as the thing continued to wrestle with its injuries and find its bearings. Though, the huge form of the creature loomed over them as it fought with the bar in its mouth, sending ripples throughout the water.
Again she was baffled by this gem-- she doubted she would've been able to look such a beast straight in the face and punch it. She peered back, her excitement growing when she realized they were closing in on the shore-- yet, still so far from it, when the huge creature smacked it's body down, turning the water around them into a rolling impact wave.
The Quartz soldier hadn't taken any time to contemplate their own bravery- their bludgeoning blows fueled more by instinct than any sort of calculated thought. For the most part, anyway. Truthfully, they were terrified, and if gems had hearts 7XB's would have been pounding in their ears.
By the grace of the Diamonds they had simply been blessed with a rather impressive 'game face', a stony mask with which to hide their fear; Fear was rather unbecoming on a soldier, was it not?
The tidel wave caused by the raging beast threatened to knock them off them over, causing 7XB to lose their footing and send both gems, once again, down the river. Instead, they scrambled to find a way to get them both to safety. Namely, her.
"Padparadscha!" They blurted suddenly, shedding the normal conventions shared between them. "get on my shoulders, quickly!" They wouldn't have much time, but this was the best idea they had. "I'm gonna throw you to shore."
The wave railed over the surface of the water, and the sapphire's excitement was rolled over with it. What came out of 7XB's mouth next struck her, and didn't sit with her well at all. Not the forgone honorifics, but the request itself. It sounded as if they were asking her to abandon the situation, and potentially, the clear quartz themselves if things didn't go according to plan. Was there even a plan? For a second, she didn't budge, she tightened her grip around them in an attempt to say that she was going to stay put-- even in the face of this threat, it felt safer to be here with the soldier than it did to think about being without them. If only the shore had been in range, then she could...
In that thought, she realized, being on shore would make her a whole lot more useful. With water pouring over her, and being so close to the threat, she wasn't much more than a petrified, corundum-sized rock at this point. From the shore, she could potentially provide more support. She had trusted 7XB's instincts up to this point, and she wanted to continue to trust them. Still, the thought of losing them gave her a dizzy nausea. "What about you?" She strained as she forced herself to climb up into position.
"I'll be fine, " they insisted over the musical cacophony of the rushing water, swiftly reaching up to take hold of her by the waist- "Just trust me!" The fact of the matter was, 7XB was much less confident than they seemed, but in the face of dwindling time it was the best idea they could devise.
"This..may be a bit of a rough landing." They admitted, lifting her off their shoulders and quite literally hurling the diminutive sapphire towards the shore- not to mention the dangerous turning of their back towards the creature.
Hopefully, it wouldnt come back to bite them. But the Quartz had to act fast now that Padparadscha was off their back, suddenly ducking down into a rather erratic spin-dash, kicking and churning the water around them like a motor boat, arching themselves towards the nearest stretch of Sandy riverbank.
The sapphire didn't have time to really analyze 7XB's tone before they lobbed her through the air, but now that she was flying over the water, there would be no turning back. She would have to trust them, no matter what. "Ufh," She face-planted into the sand, jarred for a moment as she tried to dispel a daze. She shook it off, scrabbled up to her feet, then whirled around to see what had happened. Her mouth fell open as the huge creature heaved itself out of the water once again, now with a free jaw-- then her eyes fell on the quartz making a break for the shore.
"Look out!" She said, searching her mind frantically as the creature lurched into the water after 7XB. She spotted a good sized rock-- in a moment without much lucid thought, she picked it up, and flung it at the monster's body. As soon as the stone left her hands, it became apparently that if it were distracted, it would be distracted by her. Awashwith panic, she stumbled as far as she could away from the edge of the water.
The quartz had, in their mind, planned to distract the creature for a few minutes longer, so it surprised them when a small rock came flying past their shoulder, striking the enraged creature. 'Shes braver than I gave her credit for.' They would have to admit as much to her, if they ever got the chance.
But they would have to worry about saving her first- their spin-dash keeping them just ahead of the corruption in their race to the shore. 7XB's feet hit the sand just before the beast, giving them only enough time to prepare for the monster, hunching over and conjuring their weapons in a moment of reprieve.
"Run!" They bellowed loudly, voice having grown used to calling out over the water. "Just run!" In that moment came the terrible impact.
Her whole body went rigid as she watched rows of teeth come down on 7XB's gauntlets with an audible clang. Their words rang out, but she didn't move, the inner corners of her brows twisted up in a sort of confusion over her wide eyes. They asked her to do something she wouldn't do-- or couldn't, now that her panic had calcified. Run? She echoed the word in her mind and tried to break her muscles free from terror. She had no idea what this gem's plan was-- to have her just scurry off and leave them to hold their own against this insanity Earth had flung at them?
The sapphire was overcome with a prickling irritation at the thought of it. She trusted the quartz, they had tremendous strength and talent-- but now, it was a lot easier to see some of the toll that the present turmoil had taken on them. Did they want her to just abandon them? What would she do without her entourage? Wander on her own? Give up? Now that was something she certainly couldn't do. Exasperation heated up her petrified musculature, and gave her a renewed sense of resolve. She was no soldier, but she would do something.
As the creature threatened to begin rolling with the pressure it exerted on the quartz, she ran-- right back up to the water's edge, some ways down from where 7XB took the impact, just within range, and sent a whip of blistering hot plasma at the corruption's neck. She didn't let herself think about what the consequences of her brazenness would be.
Thankful for the strength of their gauntlets, and their arms, 7XB could nonetheless feel the incredible strength of the creature's jaws, the tightly coiled muscle very clearly a match for theirs.
Or maybe..more than a match? The lightening hot lasso that coiled around the monsters neck kept them from finding out, vice-like jaws releasing the Quartz with a screech of agony. Rather surprised at their narrow escape, 7XB took a step back, holding their left fist out towards the beast, a ball of plasma flickering to life between their fingers, swirling to grow Larger and larger, and as quickly as they could manage. The quartz knew that the burning could only distract it for so long before it turned it's attention to Padparadscha.
"Aha!" She exclaimed as her plasma made contact, then she shot a glance toward 7XB to confirm that they were alright. The corruption reeled, yanked back on the cord and pulled the sapphire off of her feet with it. "Whaa!" the corundum flew through the air, her hands in a white-knuckled grip around her rope as the creature thrashed. A band of light followed the string of plasma as it stretched and spun around the enraged beast, lighting up the area and glinting in the thing's beady eyes. It's jaw snapped after her as it tried to locate its small attacker, but the momentum of its movement just flung her around in circles.
More dizzy than she'd been all day, the sapphire regretted that she hadn't let go in the most opportune moment, but if she let go now she'd be hurled to who knows where. However, despite the fear boiling in her, she didn't regret that she'd taken action-- her clear quartz protector might have more range to, hopefully, make some kind of decisive maneuver. What that would be she didn't know, all she could see was the forest spinning around her.
Amidst charging their plasma shot, 7XB nearly found themselves bludgeoned in the head by the projectile sapphire, their eyes widening in subtle panic as the gem they had been trying to desperately to protect was whipped around like a ragdoll.
'Right, okay. Just gotta be careful with my shot.' shakily, they were trying to reassure themselves.
But by the grace of the Diamonds, the Quartz's shot if swirling, superheated plasma had reached critical mass, and as the beast continued to track Paddy like a carrot on a stick, they just had to wait for the perfect shot.
And finally, it came, steely eyes closing as they loosed a small sun's worth of plasma at the beast- it would be timed as such to strike them in the chest, a final shriek of anguish echoing past the monsters maw while their body appeared to be consumed by the white light, exploding in a burst of light. Amongst the stardust a dark, mysterious GEM Cascades downwards into the water..likely vanishing before recoveey was possible.
As she wondered how she was going to get out of this mess she'd gotten herself into, there came a jolt as the the creature came to a sudden halt. It's terrifying call caused her to freeze all over again. The inertia flipped her light frame around and into the air for a final moment before it evaporated into nothing beneath her. Though the creature was gone, her nerves sizzled with adrenaline, and she had no conception of where she was relative to anything else. For a split second as she flipped through the air, she spotted the glossy edges of a gem plop into the water, and her mouth fell open when she realized that this valuable data now coursed away from her, down through the violent cataracts.
She had the urge to leap in after it, though there wouldn't be an option to do so now that the momentum had flung her into the opposite direction. Her irritation had climbed to a new high for the day as she realized she was fast-approaching the ground-- again. All she could think to do was to shield her own gem as she came down.
The moment the corrupted gem retreated into the safety of it's gem, the water rushing it off even farther downstream, 7XB breathed an audible sigh of relief, their bulky form relaxing for a mere fraction of a second before they realized that Padparadscha was in the middle of plummetting through the air towards the river bank- though unfortunately they knew from experience that the at the speed she was going, the sand would be less than forgiving.
'Oh my stars!'
And they were off again, barreling forward at that same breakneck speed they normally reserved for combat, arms outstretched in the hopes of catching the Sapphire. Though their arms would likely be far from comfortable, it would at least be preferable to the ground- or so 7XB hoped, anyway. It was only now, as things seemed to be winding down, that the Quartz allowed themselves to feel the slightest bit..weary.
With her hands covering the gem on her neck, braced for a bunch of gritty sand in the face-- she was a bit startled to see 7XB swoop in at the last second. "Uff," Padparadscha fell into their arms without much grace, but it was a relief to have her momentum cushioned. Her head was still swimming from being thrown around, and it was hard to believe that the chaos was over-- momentarily, anyway. The stress was causing her entire form to tremble like a leaf in the wind. She turned to look up at the soldier, her eyes flickered over their expression while she tried to regain her senses. Already they seemed to be decompressing, and the sapphire realized she could let herself do the same.
Initially she'd thought it would be much more difficult for her to calm down, but being where she was in that moment reminded her of the quartz's earlier promise to her. I swear I'm not going to let any sort of harm befall you. It felt now as if it truly were guaranteed, nothing could harm her with 7XB right here with her. She felt as if she couldn't have made a better choice for her mission. Her trembling began to melt away, and a demure smile grew on her lips. "T-thank you, commander," She managed, then ran her fingers through her hair and gave a nervous laugh, "W-we made it!"

This Roleplay is a prequel to Steven Universe to an extent with some slight retconing and its own progression to the story that will turn out differently to how stuff plays out in the show. Thanks to the message by Rose Quartz several gems are rising up to protect Earth and have labelled themselves as the Crystal Gems. Others on earth are remaining aligned to Homeworld though despite the isolation of Earth from Homeworld
All gems on earth are still stranded, the communication hub is still offline and all the space warps are shattered, it has now been revealed that this is the work of Rose Quartz and her small group known as the Crystal gems. They have rebelled against Homeworld and have chosen to protect the Earth (Trapping themselves on Homeworld to keep the warps down).
Now both sides are fighting among themselves along with fighting against the 'Corruption' a virus is infecting many gems turning most of them into mindless monsters, but those with a stronger will seem to becoming something more sinister.
The Game has changed now. The question has finally been posed, are you against Homeworld or allied with them. Or do you have your own agenda that may or may not been assisted by the ‘Corruption’. Regardless the seeds have been placed down and although it is only the beginning the fight for or against Earth and the corruption has begun. The choice is yours for how it is shaped on the Original Steven Universe Roleplay Site.
