"Well..." Ruby started, looking down at the ground to think. "I know the Ruby my mind invented - I guess we'll call her... the other me? She cared a lot for Lapis. I know she wanted to protect Lapis, and-" She shut her eyes to think some more.
"The other me cared about Earth. I think I must have adopted some of the character traits from my crew - like 1A3G. She cared about Lapis and the Earth. But I forgot Lapis even existed once I left that crash site. My mind invented my captain and... I think it was just a coincidence I ran into Lapis along the way. I know that the other me had no idea about her mission. I don't know if she ever lied, unless you count telling Lapis about the story my mind created. My mind just made the other me... simple and self-preserving, I guess. But I still have the other me's memories. I can judge her decisions and... they weren't all bad, I guess." Ruby said, sounding conflicted.
"Despite aligning myself with Homeworld, the Crystal Gem rebels I despised so much ended up being some of the nicest people I'd interacted with, even in comparison to other Homeworld-affiliated gems. And Lapis, totally unaffiliated, wasn't even afraid of me, despite my mission and intentions being unknown. She was genuinely concerned for me." Ruby said, sounding instantly guilty.
"The two of us shared what should be a common goal for Homeworld and Crystal Gems alike - curing the corruption. Despite the fact that neither of us could necessarily do anything about it. And... my mission - my superiors might have just been ordering defectives be returned to Homeworld for shattering... we would have lost her determination and strength to do good, despite her situation." Ruby sighed, her guilt only worsening.
