Saki continued to eat her chicken strips as she thought about how to answer Paddy's question. Then she had an idea. She pointed to a map of the world which was displayed on the wall.
"See that? We are here."
A Gladius appeared and impaled itself into the location of Empire City.
"And this is the castle."
A second Gladius appeared and impaled itself into what would be the Australian Outback.
"That's the best way I could show you."
Eventually she got bored and decided to entertain herself. The gladiī removed themselves from the map and began to fight each other. Saki smiled as they hacked and thrusted at each other. One would attack and one would party. Eventually one of the blades seemed to impale it's imaginary opponent and the opposing Gladius dropped to the ground. Then the blades vanished and Saki laughed a little.
Watching the gem put that strange stuff in her mouth was unsettling for the sapphire, her eyes flickered away as she waited for the sulfur to answer her question. As Saki summoned her weapon, Padparadscha's body grew tense. It happened too quickly for her to really think about it or react, her eyes tried to follow the blades as they zipped across the room and struck the wall. She gaped at the wall, fumbled for her slate, then pulled up her documentation holoscreen. She captured several images, some where the swords were stuck into the wall, and some where the swords were dancing around in front of it, leaving two holes in the map. They weren't coordinates, but they were the next best thing. She lowered her documentation devices, and watched as Saki's swords parried and struck at one another.
The sapphire couldn't help but to feel a bit of twisting in her abdomen as she saw the display. It seemed to foreshadow the difficult journey she'd laid out for herself. She watched the sword fall to the ground, and felt a pang of discomfort. Who would win this tug of war? She wanted to believe that it would be her, but the future was something left to the mind of blue-court sapphires. It also seemed to reveal something unsettling about this sulfur. Though, Padpara supposed that with a dad like the aforementioned traitor, and an uncle like Howlite, it was unavoidable for this poor, poor gem to be caught up between them, and to pick up on some of their unsavory qualities.
"T-thank you, Saki. You are a helpful gem," She said, trying to dispel the unease she felt,"I'm glad to have met you. Have you spent a while here in the city? Or, do you often visit this castle?"
"I mean I haven't really been alive for very long. I've mostly been exploring the planet. Trying to help understand my home better. I mean, if I'm going to live here I might as well see it all right?"
She finished her chicken and smiled.
"So Paddy, I can't help but notice that you're quite fixated on the castle... Would you like me to take you there sometime? I could show you around. There's a lot of rooms. There's even a secret room Uncle Howlite never lets anyone but him and Dad see. I don't know what goes on in there but my uncle always has a smile when he goes in and out. But other than that I could show you pretty much everything else if you'd like."
Saki was surprisingly incisive, she got straight to the point. Padparadscha appreciated that, but she was beginning to worry that the sulfur may have been on to her. The young gem seemed just as sincere, but mention of this secret room sent a chill prickling down her spine. Secrets were something that the sapphire both loathed, but took great enjoyment in the diffusing of. She wondered if this particular secret was something she'd ever want to see with her own eyes, considering who she was dealing with. Part of her still wanted to believe that stories about these Broken Gems were just tall tales meant for shock value in passing conversation, but after seeing 9XR and hearing his view points, it was difficult for her to accept either way. "That's a noble perspective," She managed as Saki spoke of wanting to travel the world.
"See it?" Was she ready for that? Could she ever be? "Ah...well, if I went on such a big trip, I'd want to bring some friends along of course..." She cleared her throat, thinking on her retinue. She'd need a whole platoon if she were going to burst into Howlite's lair, especially if there were several Broken Gem allies there who could possibly get in the way of the operation. The sapphire became more tense and jittery as she thought about it. How would the confrontation go? She had no way of knowing. "If, ah...if that's okay, of course." She hoped that Saki wouldn't insist that it be just the two of them-- Padpara knew 9XR was off the rails, but she also knew he would quickly recognize her after so many run ins.
"I'm sorry Paddy but I can't. Dad doesn't want me bringing large groups in. Only an occasional guest. But if I do bring you, you'll be perfectly safe. No one's allowed to harm guests in the castle unless specifically ordered by Dad and Dad would never go against me. You got nothing to worry about."
Then she giggled.
"In fact we could go right now. No one would bother us. You'd be safe. Plus it's be a good way for us to become friends! What'd you say?"
She extended a hand to the gem. She was so thrilled! With luck she'd have a new friend. Which would be good because she didn't have any.
Her brows shot up as she processed what Saki told her. She didn't have a plan, and she knew she'd be recognized by at least two different Broken Gems there if she were unlucky enough to happen by them. This lair had been totally unknown to her; she would've at least liked to contract some gems practiced in espionage to gather more information on it before she went waltzing in, as if it weren't the den of her absolute enemy. It was a preposterous risk to take, especially since both of those gems, Howlite and Spade, knew where the sapphire stood. With opposing ideologies, vast differences in combative prowess, and home-field advantage for the Broken Gems, the operation could end up going straight into the ground. But she could lose this lead if she didn't take it-- Saki was oblivious now, but she wouldn't be forever, and Padparadscha would have to take what she could get before it slipped through her fingers.
"If you're sure it would be safe," Padpara started quietly, then swallowed. Her eyes flickered up to meet Saki's,"Then...I suppose the two of us can go see it. I would love for you to give me a tour," She looked down at her communicator and flipped it open,"I'm going to visit a castle with my new companion, Saki," She chimed, knowing that the implications would reach her pearl soon, then shut her comm off. Finally, Padpara took Saki's outstretched hand, and gave a reserved smile to the sulfur sitting across the table.
In a blur, she sped Paddy to the nearest warp pad. She used her accelerated decoy to give her an extra boost. Soon they warped to the castle.
"Dad's not home today. I'm pretty sure he's out hunting."
She led Paddy inside. She spoke in a low voice.
"Try to speak softly. Uncle Howlite goes nuts when he hears loud noises."
She gently knocked on his bedroom door.
"Uncle Howlite? You there?"
She opened his door to find it empty. She spotted a note and read it out loud.
"Crashing in Beach City for a few days. If you need me I'll be staying at the Silver Wolf Hotel. Just letting you know. I figured I might as well get some relaxing done before I go on my next hunt. Boss if you're reading this, I'm just getting my booze on so don't worry about me."
Before she knew it, she was standing dizzy on a warp-pad. As she tried to gain her bearings, her eyes cast over the old masonry that stood around her. She made mental note of its design, and already began to analyze it and guess at its internal structure. To hear that Sulfur-- or Dad as he seemed to be called-- wasn't in the building gave her a modicum of relief, but she was so tense that she faltered behind Saki as if her limbs were frozen solid. At the sulfur's warning about Howlite, her nerves buzzed with adrenaline. She didn't know if she would even be able to speak at all when she realized that Saki had already called forth the gem that Padpara's operation was pinned against. If 9XR saw her, she didn't know how he would react. She couldn't even say how she would react.
The sapphire would appear completely inert as Saki opened the door. Then, her tension fell away, her expression washed over with confusion as the other gem read the note. Her fists coiled, and her eyes burned with a grim determination as the implications settled. The Silver Wolf Hotel-- she'd never seen it herself, but Beach City was much more navigable than Empire City. He was without his allies, and perhaps even intoxicated. This had already been an enlightening visit.
As much as she wanted to use this opportunity to see the layout of the Broken Gem lair, she also knew that time was running short. She turned to eye the sulfur, a small smirk floating on her lips, "It sounds like your uncle is having a good time. Why don't we pay him a visit?"
