Sapphire remained motionless. Then he moved his head slightly as if he wanted to watch the horizon over the sea. He stayed silent for few moments.
"What kind of test do you implying? I am well aware of your skills in combat, it's considerable, nobody disputes that. Or do you have some other test in mind?"
Sapphire was curious. Perhaps Howlite had some idea in mind, something that might convince Sapphire, that his effort to go back to Crystal gem was genuine.
"I'm one big ear, so to speak."
He used a human saying, though it was probably not exactly correct. Sapphire was paying very little attention to human sayings. Their culture was fasinating to be sure, but some parts of it were positively silly.
"Ah well that's kinda cheating ain't it? How is it a true test if I'm the one who makes it? I was thinking that someone who's been a rebel as long as you have would surely have something I could do."
He looked off into the distance as a bird snatched a fish out of the water. It was pretty cool watching Earth's predators. He personally found that he liked sharks and wolves the most. Howlite could easily relate due to being an Apex predator. The top of the food chain. That's why he knew he was meant to be a rebel. Howlite was no hero and he knew that. But sometimes a war doesn't need a hero. Sometimes what it needs is a monster.
"On the contrary... perhaps, what I seek is not the answer... but the question. I don't doubt, that if I present you a test, you will be able to pass it. You're skilled and inventive. This was never about your skills... but are you able to ask yourself the right question?"
Sapphire asked Howlite. If Howlite wanted to be a Crystal gem again, he would have to act on his own, not just follow orders. There had to be some sort of assurance, that he will act as a Crystal gem even if nobody will check on him. "Not to mention I am not a rebel as the others. Not in the same way. I don't wish to fight Homworld, just to save Earth... however unlikely it seems, that one can be achieved without the other... "
Sapphire was also confused. Was Howlite talking to himself? Or perhaps he had some kind of hallucination... Sapphire couldn't be sure. Howlite was really strange indeed.
"You want to prove, that you are ready to become Crystal gem, am I correct? You wanted a test. My test is simple - find a way to convince me... choose a task, that should prove, that you are indeed a Crystal gem in your heart. Or so to speak."
He said carefully. Howlite was scaring him a little. He was erratic and unpredictable. And now it seemed he is haunted by something else? "Is something strange happening to you? You appeared... unfocused."¨
He tried to ask him. It would be interesting to learn more.
"I suppose you have a right to know. I have what the humans would call schizophrenia. Essentially I hallucinate nearly all the time and hear voices in my head. Anyways for the test...."
He thought long and hard about this. If he were in Sapphire's shoes, what would convince him? He then had an idea.
"How about a trust excercise? Considering that my whole issue stemmed from not trusting you guys, how about a trust excercise? I'll go high enough to the point where if I hit the ground I shatter, and I have to trust that you'll catch me. Sound good?"
He didn't like the thought of potential death but he decided it was worth the risk to see the smile on Slugger's face when he became a Crystal Gem.
What Howlite said was terrible, but it made a whole lot of sense. Howlite was a "broken gem" more than Sapphire suspected. Sapphire pride himself in a strict mental discipline which helped him solve most of his problems. This gem had to live with his thought betraying him.
"I am really sorry, that something so terrible happened to you. I am sorry, but I don't know how to help you. I am no healer and even if I were scars on the mind are not so easily healed... "
He was genuinely sorry, especially since Howlite's honesty might prevent him from ever joining Crystal gems. Having mentally unstable gem around would be a risk... but his intentions seemed to be honest, it was difficult.
"I should warn you... I am no warrior gem. My weapon is my mind, not reflexes... this is not a matter of trust, but simply hand-eye coordination. I might simply fail at catching you despite my most honest attempt at catching you..."
"If I expected you to help I would've already asked you for help. I've gotten rather used to the voices. And the hallucinating only occurs when I'm either unsure of myself or making a moral decision. It's always 2. One that tells me to do something bad. That's why I said not helping. And one that encourages me to be good. I usually listen to the latter but sometimes the urge gets too strong."
Sapphire's next statement made him bust out laughing.
"That's the point! I have to put my trust in you and your capabilities. Besides, if I fell to my death and you at least tried to catch me... I'd be at peace with that. Now let's go."
He started sprinting to the nearest warp pad where he waited for Sapphire so he could tell him the plan.
Voices and hallucinations both, Howlite was indeed the full package.
"How quaint... I suspect I should be grateful that you are listening to the "good" voice then. I don't want to guess what the other one wanted."
It was not exactly an enigma, it was most likely some variation on "kill him". Perhaps with more flavor or unnecessarily unpleasant details. "I am not sure if it is wise to risk your life. I think we both know that I would try to save you. Dying only because of my clumsiness would be... unfortunate. Not to mention wasteful."
There was a small, insignificant part that thought it would be better if he left Howlite to die, but this part was quickly silenced.
"I doubt that the Crystal Gems would mourn my death. Anyhow here's the plan: first I warp to the sky arena and you warp to the ground below it. Then I jump and if you at least try to catch me, I'll be at peace. Let's go!"
He warped to the sky arena and approached the edge.
"Oh stars... I'm about to take a 10,000 foot drop to my death unless a Sapphire can catch me... Oh jeez.... How bad could it be?"
He found a stone about the size of his gem.
"Let's see here."
He dropped it over the side and watched it shatter. He gulped.
"Uh oh. Oh no I can't do this. But I have to! For Light! For Slugger! For everyone!"
And with that he closed his eyes, stepped over the edge and dropped.
This was a terrible idea. The terrible idea. Sapphire was quite positive that this was the stupidest thing he ever saw someone attempt. Before he could attempt to talk him out of it, he simply warped away. Sapphire quickly warped under the arena. Fortunately, he was able to predict the direction in which he intended to fall...
There was no chance he could actually catch the falling gem. He lacked the proper skill and he had to act quickly, otherwise, Howlite would be shattered. And Sapphire refused to live with the thought, that he was responsible for the death of this gem.
He touched the ground, feeling a water inside it, he quickly moved his hand and the water froze, rising to the surface in form of a giant slide, slide that was able to catch falling Howlite, who slid on it safely to the ground.
