The plan Red had in mind was far more dangerous than the one she had suggested the Rubies follow; not to her of course, but she was the leader, she had to make the hard decisions that ultimately paid off.
That was the burden of command.
As the two fought Red stepped forward and placed both knuckles against the ground, their fore blocks pressed tightly against the glass. With a deep breathe the hammers dropped simultaneously, two plumes of powdered glass exploded into the air with a *crack* that shook the whole room.
Thousands of tiny cracks spider webbed through the floor but didn't break it. It was only the center that was in any danger of breaking... due to the extra weight of two massive humanoid figure, with each slamming step they took the whole thing buckled dangerously over a couple hundred-foot drop. With no help forthcoming the Ruby fusion was being pushed backward, until the Jasper wrapped all six of its arms around the Ruby and hoisted them into the air, only to forcefully slam them down into the ground.
A ripple spread across the whole glass structure, bouncing the edge of the room dangerously. However, it still held strong... at least until the Jasper fusion raised one foot and brought it hurtling into the Rubies chest. The middle of the room erupted; completely punched through the glass the Ruby fusion dropped like a stone towards the floor below.
The Spider Web fusion which had been standing triumphantly fell too, however, due to its massive size and many arms it still managed to plug the hole. Now its bottom half was dangling through the floor, the top half still thrashing violently; this is what Red had been waiting for, positioning was always key and now it had only two arms able to fight her off. Darting forwards her body was little more than a blur of movement, bringing her fist back she prepared to bring it straight into the abominations midsection...
Only she never connected, one random flailing hand made an unexpected arc and made contact with her neck. While the gorget protected her from getting shattered it didn't stop the momentum from taking its toll, caught mid-strike Red was off-guard and sent flying, unable to even stop herself from making hard contact with a bank of computers which exploded in a shower of sparks and flame.
Her head was ringing and there wasn't much time, left unattended the Jasper would be able to pull herself out of the hole and heal. So, when she looked over and saw that she was laying right on top of the control console she didn't think twice about her decision.
The emergency lockdown override was a huge red button, the same color as the oversized gauntlets which smashed it into a thousand pieces with desperate force. The large screens around the top of the room flashed for a second before an alarm blared into life, text on the screen to her left read 'Emergency protocols ended, please hold onto the straps while the system goes through a reboot' which prompted her to desperately grab onto the computer station she was laying on top of.
Far above the top of Space Station Crucible cracked open, its top had been an emergency airlock, which was now opening to the void as part of the automatic tests of station systems. All of the oxygen was sucked from the room, not that gems need it, but the explosive depressurization threatened to rip any living thing from the bridge with nigh unstoppable force. The Jasper in the center of the room was grinning evilly at Red, easily able to hold on by wedging two arms onto the underside of the broken glass floor.
The next text on the screens wiped it off its face "Leak detected between the command center and modular combat floor. Closing void doors" before either party could blink two completely black doors shot from below the dais upon which the computer consoles sat...
Meeting in the exact center of the room with enough force to snip the colossal Jasper in half as if she were nothing more than a stick.
As the vacuum continued to pull, the Jaspers top half disintegrated, light particles being ripped apart; no longer held together by the force of its gems. Red spied some sparkling bits that were being thrown from the airlock... straight into the O-class star; there was no doubt that this particular fusion was never coming back from this. The clash of closing doors was made once again as the top doors slammed shut, allowing the artificial gravity to kick back in dropping Red into an unceremonious heap.
Her plans for rest were ruined by the enraged screech of static from her ear, followed by an even angrier Peridot "What are you guys doing over there! I was just booted from the system by a restart, didn't I warn you not to touch it until I was on board!"
Her only answered was a pained groan followed by "Well we didn't have much choice, the mission didn't go to plan" any original ideas of just ignoring whatever follow up things the Peridot had to complain about were quickly dashed "Well whatever way it 'went'" Red didn't appreciate the way she said that "you now have a new problem, it rebooted everything. Firewall and access codes included. So, I can't shut off the hard-light training program that it just launched... meaning the three Rubies are stuck below in a fatal fight against robots".
Red's only response was silence for a moment, seriously considering letting them be destroyed and just wait for the reboot to finish. However, Rubies, no matter how weak and stupid had a price to Yellow Diamond Command and she would be damned if her first report was the loss of half a gem team.
Instead, she pushed herself to her feet; barely able to stand after that beating and headed towards the elevator shaft. The ride seemed quicker this time, maybe it was the fact that lancing sparks of pain wouldn't leave her alone meaning she had no chance to concentrate, but she slowed her breathing.
She managed to push herself into a run, passing through electrical storms, zero gravity, floating rocks, a large river she had to swim across, a room filled to the brim with snow and finally, a desert. There amidst the sand was broken glass and three unconscious Rubies who had retreated into their gems to heal, however all around them were dozens of hard-light projections.
Red was struck silent for a second, instead of humans or indigenous biological creatures these training enemies were all too familiar. She had seen their ilk when attending a court held by Pink Diamond, Quartzes, and Sapphires all in the recognizable color. However, they all approached with ill intent upon the unassuming and unmoving Rubies upon the ground and Red only had enough strength to do one more thing...
Breaking into a sprint she pushed past the crowd and stood over the three Rubies and slammed her gauntlets together, magnetized strips keeping them pressed together without even a microscopic sliver of air between them. And both hammers dropped...
A ship had arrived bringing with it a whole squad of Peridots and Quartzes to start fixing up the mess that had been created. The three Rubies had no idea what caused the floor to crack, actually going so far as to thank Red Beryl for saving them before they were shuttled off to a different assignment.
Red stood rigidly in the holographic meeting room for a de-brief with Yellow Diamonds Pearl, a giant glowing screen projecting the yellow gem in front of her eyes, she could tell from the way she spoke that there was no love lost between them "Yellow Diamond would like to send her regards on a job well done, even though it didn't go to specifications the intel could not have been more wrong, so you did barely passable in my opinion".
They had always butted heads over small issues, both thinking of themselves as the most loyal to their Diamond and Red had always hated Pearls in general, they made others weak and reliant upon them for menial tasks. And she could tell from the way Yellow Pearl was grinning that this would not be good for her.
"On another matter, White Diamond has taken a passing interest in you. Not because you did well mind you, but because you managed to bungle your way into seeing something you shouldn't have. Along with destroying her most recent kill-team. So, she's asked for you as a replacement in the matter that these Jasper's were supposed to take care of"
Red opened her mouth to protest in deadpan tones, but the Pearl held up a finger to stop her "This isn't negotiable, Yellow Diamond has already agreed to temporarily transfer your patronage until she has need of you again. A ship and two Petalite Gem guards are on their way to shuttle you to the Moon Base around Earth, the console will have your new mission" the Yellow Pearl's smile turned up into a squiggly line "Don't forget to have fun"
and with that, darkness descended once again with the closing of the communications line.
This Roleplay is a prequel to Steven Universe to an extent with some slight retconing and its own progression to the story that will turn out differently to how stuff plays out in the show. Thanks to the message by Rose Quartz several gems are rising up to protect Earth and have labelled themselves as the Crystal Gems.
