It was early in the dawn. The light was just beginning to break through the canopy of trees in shades of cool blues and silver. The forest floor, carpeted in grass, was dotted with dew. Birds, an Earth native, had not yet awoken to give life to the silence. The air held a slight chill.
A figure, tall and ghost-like among the morning mist hovered just over the damp ground, adding to her impressive height. Her form glided slowly, directionless. Her gown and gauzy drape fluttered behind her as if lazy to catch up. Despite the listlessness of her movements, her eyes remained steady on an unseen point of focus. Her self-assigned mission was to find more of her kind. Though solitude was treasured, she knew that if she were to be successful in her defection she must find other traitorous gems. But still she did even this at her leisure. This time of Earth's day, when the air was still crisp and life refused to stir, was short lived. The blue gem, Benitoite, allowed herself to indulge in its fleeting tranquility.
Benitoite figured that once the morning became engulfed in warm light and sound she would hasten her search. Though it was fully possible that other gems could have retreated to Beach City's outskirts as she did, she figured they would be more concentrated in Beach City itself or along its coast. The ocean seemed to have a way of summoning people, humans and gems alike. Her preference for the less populated areas was born long before, but had intensified since her joining of the Crystal Gems. She believed in her cause, but still found it difficult to face other gems. Would they be shocked? Violent? She would understand when they shamed her, but still it would sting.
But this could not restrain her. She knew that her journey would be plagued with being being seen as a deserter and that any past reverence for her was dead. She had to stand by her morals and fellow Crystal Gems. She had to find them. Her floating pace quickened.
