Sapphire guarded the town. Being Survivor territory, the group often needed to guard it from loyalists and corruptions. The group had spread out to cover every square inch of town: they and the town's inhabitants needed it to be safe. Sapphire was considering whether she should have covert action or not, when she saw something in the distance. It was a little catlike, so she assumed it was Junidite or StampyQuartz. She went back to guarding her part of town. Summoning her bow in case of attack, she scanned for anything suspicious. She checked the bushes, the treetops, the abandoned ship, and the boardwalk. She grabbed a branch, swinging up into the treetops. Besides, she would have an advantage if she did spot an enemy. She jumped between branches, scanning the nearby areas for enemies. She scanned for a while, but saw nothing. She decided to rest in the treetops for a while, all this jumping was making her tired.
Strolling into the coastal town, the yellow gem looked around for something interesting within the settlement. The last time she had been here, she had met a few other gems, and had promptly left briefly. Now that she was alone, Cat's Eye could clearly explore it. Walking along the boardwalk, the gem stopped in front of a building with two clear entrances into the dark interior, lit with screens from machines. However, that is not why she stopped. It was as if someone else was there. Knowing from prior experience, she should probably assume that there is actually someone there. Not taking a second look at the strange structure, Cat's Eye stepped out into the street to try to find out if her instincts were true.
After a few tense minutes, nothing happened. Sighing, the yellow gem decided to look up at the sign of the location. 'Funland Arcade', it read. She had never been in an arcade, but she has been on Earth long enough that she knew what they were. After a few glances at the area surrounding her, Cat's Eye walked into the arcade, and decided to try her luck at some of the games there.
As she rested, Sapphire saw a yellow cat gem. She decided to follow the gem, carefully watching where the gem was going. The gem walked into the arcade? Who could blame the visitor. That arcade had some fun games, even Geometry Dash's first level, Stereo Madness. She decided to stroll into the arcade as well. Trying not to be noticed by the yellow gem, she tapped a button. It made a random noise, muffling Sapphire's giggles. She had some fun playing with random objects unnoticed, until she heard something outside. She rushed out, resummoning her bow. Nothing. She desummoned her bow and walked back in, watching for the gem. This was so funny! She tapped a few more buttons, until she accidentally started Stereo Madness. She tried not to race in, but she couldn't help but start playing it! She soon beat the arcade version of Stereo Madness when she realized she had screwed up. "Hi?" she said nervously.
Cat's Eye was playing a racing game, which she was losing, when a sudden hello made her jump. Getting up from the seat stationed at the arcade game, the yellow gem looked over at the strange, purple being, eyes widened. The faceted gem on the girl's forehead immediately let her know that this indeed was another gem. The fact that there was yet another gem in the settlement was surprising to the short gem, but yet, she was also a little upset that the gem had interrupted her game. Nonetheless, it would be best for her to be polite to the purple gem.
Giving a small smile to the youthful being, she said, "Hi." A little wariness was present in her voice; she didn't know if this gem was dangerous. Then again, she saw no diamond insignia on her dress, but prior experience told her that everything may not be as it seems.
Well, NOW she had screwed up. Apparently the yellow gem didn't notice her until she said hi. The gem didn't have a diamond insignia: so there should be no fear right? Unless she was a Broken Gem. "Sorry I scared you. I'm Purple Sapphire," Sapphire said. She walked over to the catlike gem. "Try to drift a little more-gets you speed. Also, press this button to boost the car after getting a good drift," she said, touching buttons and trying to show the gem an easier way to win. "Also, only drift on turns so you don't go off-road." Knowing the arcade, she had played the racing game multiple times. "Look, there's me," Sapphire said as a purple car marked "Purple Sapphire" appeared in front of Cats Eye's car.
Cat's Eye's mind drew a blank at Purple Sapphire's instructions on how to play it, and simply blinked and watched as the other gem drove the vehicle on the arcade game. "It's fine," she told the sapphire after a few moments, keeping up a polite tone. "I'm Cat's Eye," she introduced. "Nice to meet you!" The purple gem seemed pretty friendly for the most part, although she didn't really appreciate her sneaking up on her like that. It seemed so sudden for such a strange gem to approach her unannounced. She had never even seen a sapphire like the one in front of her. Every sapphire she's ever seen had only one eye; this one had two, nor has she ever seen a purple one.
Hesitantly, Cat's Eye decided to take the controls for the arcade game, and tried her best to follow Purple Sapphire's advice. As she played, she marveled to the purple gem, "How are you so good at this game?!" Having never played an Earthen arcade game before, her lack of skill was to be expected.
Sapphire chuckled. Didn't this gem know? "I've lived on this planet since i was made," she said. "And I have lived in this town since the first time I saw it." As the purple car that was Purple Sapphire's most recent gameplay entered 1st place, Sapphire got out her tablet. She wasn't writing a log, no, she was just bringing up her other logs. She read some of her fun and funny stories to Cats Eye. Afterward, she asked, "Which group are you with? I don't see the Diamond Insigna." The purple corundum saw a laser tag game. She wanted to play it, so when Cats Eye was done with the racing game she said, "Hey, want me to teach you how to play Laser Tag?"
Cat's Eye looked down at the yellow diamond insignia on her shirt. She couldn't tell if Purple Sapphire was blind or not, but with her clearly wearing a uniform, the yellow symbol should be glaringly obvious to the other gem. It was an unpleasant reminder of Homeworld, the place she no longer called home, etched into her form until her inevitable poofing. "I'm not part of a group," she told the sapphire. "I haven't been affiliated with...Homeworld for a few years now." She shuddered at the mention of the intergalactic empire. Pushing the memories to the back of her mind, she asked Purple Sapphire, "What's laser tag? Is it another game here?" She was not familiar with this arcade at all. Talking to someone who has been in the town for a long time, longer than her, she felt a little embarrassed to be asking the question. Either way, it's for the best if she stopped talking about Homeworld; it was an uncomfortable topic for her to talk about.
"It is another game here," Sapphire said. "It's not like the others though. It's a game you play walking around, holding a fake laser gun." Sapphire looked over to the door, then continued. "You wear a suit that glows a color, it glows the color of your team. You need to shoot the other team's suits, to disable them and earn points," Sapphire said. "You can also earn points by destroying bases located at the side of the room you play in, and there are traps you can trigger on opponents by hitting them or shooting them. The traps disable all nearby players, so get away quick!" Sapphire gently took Cats Eye's hand and lead her to the door. "This door leads to the next game," Sapphire said. As human kids came to play, the door opened for those who were going to play the next round. As Sapphire let go and walked in, she said, "Don't you wanna play? I'm on the red team."
"Okay..." Cat's Eye wasn't entirely sure on how the game worked, but she might as well try it. She followed Purple Sapphire into the enclosed area, and was given a gun and a vest. Putting it on, she noticed how the vest began to glow red. Would this mean I'm on the red team? she wondered. Looking over at the sapphire, she noticed that her vest was glowing red as well. If she was following the other gem's advice correctly, they might as well be on the same team. All of a sudden, the room began to dim, and the room was lit up in neon colors. The yellow gem blinked, trying to get adjusted to the new color scheme. Children's cries began to erupt in the room as beams began to fill the room.
Grabbing Purple Sapphire's hand, Cat's Eye dashed under one of the Earthen structures used to play this game. She turned to face the other gem present. "Am I not supposed to get hit with one of the laser guns?" she asked. She never said so, so she might as well ask the sapphire.
"No, try not to get shot," Sapphire said. She got out of cover, shooting the green team. "Shoot where their vest or gun is glowing," Sapphire advised. She got back in the cover, trying not to be shot. As the green team rounded the corner to find the gems, she raced off. "We should stay together, so follow me!" she said. Someone smacked a bomb near them, and Sapphire swerved into cover. A laser hit her vest, disabling her gun. Sapphire rounded the corner to find a base belonging to the Green Team. "Shoot it!" Sapphire said. As she fired her laser at the base, she listened for the sound announcing that the base was taken over. Soon it sounded, and the base became red. "Let's go!" Sapphire said.
Without another word, Cat's Eye followed Purple Sapphire through the maze, although she had not shot anything with the fake gun yet. Surprisingly, she had not been shot yet by any laser guns, but she knew that it would come to an end shortly. As the barricade of green beams came towards them, Cat's Eye tried her best to dodge them. Glancing down at the laser gun, she decided now would be the time to shoot. Pulling the trigger of the laser gun, she was surprised at the sudden red beam that appeared in front of her. Dashing behind one of the structures, she shot another laser, hoping that it would hit someone on the other team. Cat's Eye smiled. She was actually enjoying this human activity the sapphire had introduced to her.
As the gems enjoyed themselves, Sapphire fired at a green base and soon it was destroyed. As a laser disabled her gun, she raced into cover. Noticing a small hole she could fit the tip of her gun in, she placed her gun and fired. Noticing a mirror facing a guy behind cover, she fired a few rounds at the mirror and disabled the enemy. As lasers surrounded the gems, Sapphire fired at a bomb and disabled some marching enemies. The game was not only intense, but fun. The young corundum slid into cover and jumped out, avoiding the fastest shooters. She was going to fast for Cat, so she went to her and stopped any green nearby. Soon she was #1.
Cat's Eye was not as lucky as her sapphire companion. Almost immediately after she had shot her laser gun at the opposing team, she received a shot back, and the lights on her vest went dark. She pouted at the sight of this; the gem had been enjoying the Earthen game they were playing. Not knowing what to do after she had been shot, Cat's Eye remained in place, watching the children, plus Purple Sapphire, play in their game of laser tag. It pained her not to be involved, but it seems that there was nothing she could do.
As the purple gem neared her, the yellow gem was amazed at her speed in the maze, which she had expected from her playing laser tag countless times. When no more lasers were shot, Cat's Eye turned to face the sapphire, puzzled. "Is it done?" she asked. "Nothing's happening."
As a man herded the kids out of the arena, Sapphire said, "Yep." The corundum walked out, to find her allies waiting for her. When they saw the Yellow Diamond symbol on Cat's chest, they stood in place. There was a look of utter fear on their faces. "Sapphire? Who's that?" Stampy asked. "This is Cats Eye. She is unaffiliated, so please don't mind her clothing," Sapphire said. She turned to Cat. "Cats Eye, this is StampyQuartz, Junidite, and Blue Peridot," she said as she gestured toward her friends. "Also, do you mind if I call you 'Cat?' You have a long name.." Sapphire blushed. She wasn't used to asking permission to give someone a nickname, especially after she just met them. But, she had a feeling the gems would be good friends!
