These humans were very much the same as every other human 7XB had come across as of yet: Not only unintelligent and irresponsible, but cowardly as well, though the quartz assumed that they should be happy that the entire encounter went so smoothly, all things considered, but some part of them, some feeling hardwired into the mind of each proper quartz gem, perhaps, couldn't help but long for some excitement, even as their more logical side breathed a sigh of relief. As a result, the quartz was still incredibly tense, muscles ready to pounce at even the smallest sign if trouble.
The now-hurried group of humans turned to depart, coming face to face with 3JJ; The Jasper cast a look over the tops of the human’s heads, waiting for affirmation with 7XB gave in the form of a curt nod before stepping aside. “Be on your way.. uhm..a..Citizens.” the Jasper said hurriedly, waving them off as Padparadscha had done before stepping closer to the pair of superior gems.
“I'm surprised they can even manage something this advanced.” The quartz murmered, fingers wrapping around the fragile machinery as they looked over it. Humans may have been one of the more advanced races Gemkind has come across, but that wasn't saying much. “Can you think of anything else we might need?” The sooner they got what they needed, the better- Hopefully they'd snag a rebel or two.
The camera was sufficient for long distance observation, and it would have the added benefit of being able to go undetected by gem tech scanners-- if the Crystal Gems were so prepared as to have such a thing. She had half a mind to keep the device, for use in future investigations, but looked toward the clear quartz as she wondered if they would want to keep such a thing for themselves. As she looked at them, she found herself thinking more on the investigation they had left behind in the office some time ago. Forgetting herself for a moment while they looked the camera over, the sapphire just listened and admired them, until it was her time to speak.
The sapphire gave a bit of a sly smirk,"The only thing I need now is for you to stay close, Commander. Things are going to heat up once we get there. But of course you knew that," Her eyes flicked to 3JJ,"You need to stay sharp, and don't underestimate our enemy," She reminded briskly. Too many times she had done as much, and allowed the enemy to get away from her. She looked between the quartz gems, then stepped off toward the rebel fort. Her holopanel's evidence reel continued to pick up on the sights and sounds as she went, like another set of eyes and ears for her, but she knew that both of the soldier's would be keeping a good eye out as well; so far 3JJ seemed to be quite good at following orders, which was crucial, but also a trait that many quartz could boast of.
Part of what had been so frustrating about 6UE was her seeming inability to think for herself in a productive manner; indecisiveness could be a deadly mistake, as the sapphire knew all too well from experience. 7XB's decisiveness, among a slew of other traits, made them a very good ally to have on the field; she only wished she could keep them around.
Trusting that her comrades were in tow, she continued,"We should start taking covert action. Any sign of our foe?" She glanced around for cover as they neared the looming structure, but the town seemed to give way to the old gem architecture, and the overgrowth of organic life around it. The lapping of waves against the shore momentarily caught her attention, and her eyes glided over the sparkling ocean water as she waited for her answer.
The Quartz gem had grown so used to the feeling of Padparadscha's simmering gaze burrowing into them that it had essentially been second nature to them, so even as they feigned interest in the hard-fought human technology in their grasp. It was like a furnace being turned up all around them, as if the lethal rays of the sun had decided to shine on 7XB alone. It was an altogether pleasant feeling, and yet there was always a fluttering of discomfort, of confusion, hidden away somewhere within that feeling. No matter how many times it happened, they never felt any closer to figuring it out. For a gem so oriented upon not only duty, but results as well, this was beyond infuriating; That was part of the reason that 7XB had decided to let the investigation lie, at least temporarily.
But that wasn't the focus now.
They nodded, giving a little bit of a grin as Padparadscha turned her attention to 3JJ. “Understood, Your Clarity,” they said with a respectful chuckle, offering the camera back to the Sapphire before things got too out of hand. 3JJ straightened like an oak as Padparadscha turned to face her, saluting at once, again. “Nothing will get past me, Your Clarity!” Things seemed to have been going swimmingly thus far, but the fresh cut knew better than to let herself get comfortable just yet.
7XB noticed the coverless no-man's-land that surrounded the temple right away, pursing their lips even before her question was carried up to their ears by the wind. “Not much in the way of cover, except for..hm..” they gesture across the sun-bleached sand to where a pile of rubble lay: a large hand sticking out of the sand. “That. It's a bit closer to the base.”
She pulled her eyes away from the water to smile back at 7XB, appreciating theirs for the moment, before giving a nod to 3JJ. She grasped the camera in one hand, and elected to put the lanyard over her head, carrying it the way she presumed it had been intended to be, but kept the device in her hands as she began to look for signs of the enemy herself.
At a measured, quick pace, she went straight for the cover that the clear quartz had pointed out. 3JJ was close in tow, and hunkered down behind the stone carving. While the jasper didn't exactly expect any rebels to come popping out of the ocean, she didn't keep her eyes in one place for very long. After all, Padparadscha was already closely scrutinizing the base itself; she scanned the architecture from the top down, looking for any sign of movement. Admittedly scouting wasn't her specialty, but it was something she had been getting accustomed to since her arrival on the field.
"Peculiar..." She muttered quietly,"Things are rather quiet. I'm not seeing any signs of the enemy so far. The architecture itself seems to be fortified indeed, I doubt they'd abandon those resources," The investigator pulled the camera away from where it had been in front of her face, and peered around, then toward 7XB as she thought about the spontaneity of this mission. She couldn't imagine that the quartz would have been discovered in their plan to bring her and 3JJ here, she imagined them to be much more careful than to allow for that. Were the rebels really so few as to not be seen on the turf they'd attempted to claim for themselves, or were they simply spread out? Was there something in play that she hadn't considered? "This absence could mean any number of things...I should hope there isn't a trap waiting for us, but all the same, we don't exactly have a gauge on their numbers..." She expected that 7XB would've already shared it if they had intel on why the rebels weren't here, or what they could possibly be up to if they were here. Her curiosity about what was going on heightened with each passing moment, it was practically a strain to keep herself put behind cover.
Bringing the camera back up, she looked toward the door, and flinched slightly as she caught the movement of a shadow. Giddiness hit her in a wave as the notion of rebels actually being here became more tangible,"Wait! I think..." She kept the camera trained on the entrance, but frowned when a moment passed and she saw nothing else,"Hmm..."
The older Quartz actually almost felt slow in the presence of these two younger gems that darted for the cover of the ancient, crumbling hand that seemed to have originally been a part of the temple that the rebels had claimed as their base, lumbering after them spryly. The fingertips of the hand were worn, cracked from countless years baking in the elements. Even so, it was still more than large enough to accommodate the trio of gems hidden away behind it..so long as the pair of Quartz gems hunkered down on their knees, anyway. A hand rose to, carefully, brush hair from their eyes as the large quartz peered around the massive hand and towards the temple from which it had fallen.
“I don't see any guards,” they began, before explaining further, “ but it's very possible that there is still a large number of rebels somewhere inside. There is a much greater number of chambers inside than can fit into that amount of space.” They gestured towards the door in the back wall of the small alcove, just past the warp pad-” I believe it to be the result of extra-dimensional engineering.” Such a thing was far from unknown to gems, but to think that the rebels had such an asset was unusual. “We should-”
Their whispered hush was gone as the gem in the shadows came into vogue( and the sun); A dark gem, with her stone set into the hollow of her throat- an Onyx on the way to the temple..
Her brows shot up as 7XB mentioned extra dimensional technology, classified prototypes of which she had seen in prior escapades. The technology was extremely dangerous and experimental in its nature, so it completely blindsided her to hear that the rebels possessed such devices. The camera lowered as her lips fell open. Knowing that the Crystal Gems had something like that could mean that any number of advanced, dangerous technologies could be in their grasp; it was a terrifying prospect. She gripped the camera tightly, as if it were going to fly away if she didn't. Before she allowed any sound to be uttered from her own lips, her eyes flicked back to the entrance of the rebel base as 7XB reacted to the arrival of one of them. Her eyes narrowed at the sleek gem who moved like a corporeal shadow, and looked as if she were a manifestation of the void, despite the efforts of Earth's bright main-sequence star to illumine the surface around her.
The camera slid back up as Padparadscha zoomed on the suspect, but the gem's dark motif made it difficult for the human technology to pick up the details of her form. The investigator could see no weapons, armor, or other artifacts being carried by the gem, but she knew better than to think this one was defenseless or even alone for that matter. The sapphire captured enough close ups for later filing into her database and into the court of law's wanted list.
As quickly as the gem had appeared, she slipped around the wall. Where there was one rebel, there were likely to be others. 7XB's warning about the fact that the hold could be obscuring much more than what met the eyes was cause to be nervous. All the same, she was ever more curious about what went on inside of this base, and where that technology was; and about this gem who had briefly shown herself in the daylight. The sapphire's small feet slid forward in the sand, and pursed her lips as she glanced back to 7XB. She definitely needed a closer look inside the fortress, but was unsure of how best to proceed. In times like these, having a mutual signaling system would've been nice, but the sapphire felt that she and the clear quartz already shared a current of understanding; she trusted 7XB to act in an effective, if sometimes brazen manner, and hoped that they too could trust her.
She froze before taking any action, as the Onyx reappeared at the entrance, accompanied now by a sturdy, wide-set gem with a rock-like complexion, faintly glittering where the sun caught. Even when getting a close up shot of the gem, Padparadscha couldn't identify her model, but frowned when she realized the gem had multiple stones; one on her shoulder, and another on the opposing hip. She held up her hand to indicate there were now three rebel gems in sight, but kept the camera on the movement of their opponents. Both of them again disappeared inside of the base, and the sapphire could hardly keep herself put.
Unwilling to risk being the reason that their party was discovered, therefore sabotaging the mission, 7XB quickly ducked back and out of the way as the Onyx gem slithered out of the shadows near the fortress, insuring that 3JJ did the very same. They were curious themselves, but at least this way they could still keep Padparadscha herself in their sights while she performed her duties. The orange gem went down just as fast, pressing their back against the ancient rock. She had only gotten a glimpse of the Onyx herself, but what needed to be done was abundantly clear even before the quartz commander took hold of their shoulder. Though they could no longer make out what was going on, they were tense, especially as it seemed like the diminutive sapphire was about to dart forward before they could catch her.
The Quartz would follow the precious, inpatient Sapphire through a minefield if that's what it came to, but they were relieved when she turned to them instead- if only for a moment. They knew that she wouldn't be content unless she was able to examine and catalogue the rebel base first-hand, regardless of any and all dangers presented by this gem and, according to Padparadscha, two others.
“I'm right behind you,” they promised reassuringly, nodding towards the temple, “whatever happens.” If she stepped out, the quick-thinking Quartz would be right there. “As will I, Your Clarity!” Announced the Jasper in a hushed tone, her expression as serious as ever.
“Hey!..” came a sudden, harshly-smooth voice, “somebody out there?”
An unknowable number of rebels laid in wait inside of their fortified base, harboring any variable of stolen Homeworld technology, including some of the most complex and dangerous; there was an undeniable gravity to this investigation they had put themselves into. Her nerves were alight, giddiness making it hard to focus as she racked her mind for a viable strategy here. 7XB's words arrested her attention, away from the worries that plagued her about the uncharted path forward; and though there was some undercurrent of deeper meaning between her and the clear quartz, she appreciated 3JJ's enthusiasm as well.
She didn't have long to hold onto the more uplifted feeling the team's encouragement had instilled in her before the voice of the enemy cut through the otherwise quiet breeze. The sapphire grimaced and ducked down herself, then glanced at her comrades as the both of them stuck close to cover. Though the words had been something she needed to hear, it had alerted the enemy to their location. The situation was already compromised; there weren't many places for them to go. However, one thing she knew was that doing things on her terms would be much preferable to doing things on the terms of rebels.
While the detective tried to think of an engagement plan, footfall trailed closer, shuffling swathes of sand as the rebels neared. She could only surmise the rebels were coming to investigate-- the time to act was now. The sapphire stuck her hand up to indicate that the two quartz should stay put for the time being. She imagined it would be difficult for them to go along with, especially without being able to explain her plan, but she decided it was worth a shot. After all, if it didn't work out, she had 7XB right here with her, as well as a gem they had personally chosen for her protection.
The basis for this plan was simple; the sapphire had spoken to numerous rebels on many occasions. While they often couldn't be reasoned with, they could be tricked. She made a few assumptions, or hopes, and cleared her throat. Then, she stepped out from behind cover before the rebels could get around the stone hand. With her brows floating and a small sweet smile, she made a calculated attempt at seeming vapid,"Oh! Yes, pardon me! Would you gems happen to have a moment to speak?"
They had just began to lurch forward, ready to vault over the grizzled granite palm and face off against the pitch-black gem and her unseen accomplice: the rock-skinned fusion of two as of yet unknown gems. The edge that the Onyx carried in her voice was as sharp as any blade 7XB had ever come across, and they knew that if the rebels came around the corner they would have lost any chance of keeping their mission a secret. The burly gem had tensed, moving to push themselves up off of the ground before Padparadscha gave the command for the Quartz gems to remain still.
7XB frowned, cutting their steely gaze towards the voice, before, nodding deftly, they leaned back against the warm stone, silent beneath the gentle roar of the waves.
“Hey, come one, we know you're-” the sudden appearance of a tiny gem from behind the crumbled statuary startled the sleek onyx, her whip already half-pulled from the sparkling midnight gem set in her throat. The rocky gem stepped forward threateningly, with only the onyx arm stilling her. “Easy, Rocky.. where did you come from, there, Peachy?”
Her brows furrowed at the pseudonym; she'd been called many things by rebels, and this would be another to add to the list of perplexing labels she'd been ascribed. She didn't dwell on it, as there wasn't time. Instead, the sapphire used this moment to get a better look at her opponents, and allowed her brows to shoot back up,"Ah, well, I came from behind this large hand," She spoke in her modulated tone, and gestured toward the carved stone as if it hadn't already been obvious,"But I no longer wish to dwell here. I wanted to take pictures with my camera, but the light is so harsh, what with this sand and water reflecting so much of it!" She threw up her hands, as if in defeat. There was truth to that, but for the moment her intention would be to create an opening. As distasteful as it was to deceive others, the priority remained the mission, and the safety of those on her team. Though, she would soon see if her plan would be at all effective,"Could you gems show me some place with a better vantage point? I simply must capture this...marvelous landscape," Her slender arms folded up and out, gesturing over the rolling hills surrounding them.
The larger gem gave an incredulous stare toward the sapphire, before shifting her gaze back to her compatriot, shrugging silently.Rocky as she'd been dubbed, was taller than the stone hand, giving Padparadscha's nerves a nudge as she tried to get these Crystal Gems to a more apt position for being detained and interrogated. She stepped forward, inching away from the carving. Her eyes flicked to where she had come from, toward the quartz gems who would have to act without direction. She trusted 7XB to do what they saw best, but wondered how 3JJ would deal with a situation like this.
The jasper kept her ears and eyes peeled, nerves set on edge as she anticipated being discovered. So far, so good, but soon she knew they'd have to do something, before anything could happen to the sapphire; it seemed ludicrous to her for the most fragile gem among them to be the one facing the enemy at the moment, never had she seen an aristocrat so ready to put themselves into the line of fire, but the soldier waited patiently for some sign to leap into action.
'Peachy’? The nerve of these rebels! 7XB was practically indignant as this label was plastered so careless upon Padparadscha; There were many words that they, personally, would have used to describe the admittedly peach-colored gem, but not that. Radiant, intelligent, stubborn, inquisitive..these were all titles, for better or worse, that described the sapphire much better. Every muscle in the Quartz gem's body tensed until they were almost as dense as the rock that they found themselves sheltering behind. Eyes cast quickly towards 3JJ, then a quick nod to ensure that she was on the same note as them.
In the end, it was their job to protect the Sapphire, even at the sake of the mission. 7XB knew quite well exactly how willing Padparadscha was to endanger herself for the sake of her objective- a trait that, while unusual for an aristocrat, was something the quartz could agree with.
Still, it seemed as if the Padparadscha was trying to lure the gems into an ambush: it was a difficult tactic considering there was no communication, yet luckily 7XB had a plan. Judging by the voices, it was, perhaps possible to decipher approximately where the rebels were. It was only a matter of time until the the pair of gems were discovered, so why not make use of their last moments of surprise?
“Look, Peachy,” began the onyx, casting an unsure look to her companion she rolled her weight onto her left leg, arms crossed over her narrow chest, “ this is..private property here, okay? We're going have to take.you ba-” The gem would be cut off by a suddenly explosion, the ancient stone hand seeming to explode, massive, dangerous chunks of granite flying towards the pair as 7XB drove themselves through it. 3JJ dived across a half second later, swooping the sapphire out of the radius of shrapnel. 7XB had only a second to adjust their course in the hail of rubble, aiming to strike the larger of the two- a fusion- with a fury no less meteoric than the rubble.
Her lips parted in anticipation of what she would say next, to continue stalling the rebels, and possibly figure out what was meant by this puzzling notion expressed by the rebel-- but stone blasted over the beach and she suddenly left the ground,"Wha!" Her eyes were wide with shock as she frantically tried to put the situation together, squirming until 3JJ dropped her into the sand and swiveled to get a read on things herself.
As the sapphire glanced over the scene, putting things into focus, her eyes caught onto 7XB as they launched themselves straight at the towering fusion, who didn't have time to dodge. Instead, the lumbering gem braced herself for the assault, and the clear quartz collided straight into her. The force knocked the huge gem back, she stumbled over her feet, but she made to snap her bulky arms around her opponent while the close-quarters combatant was in range.
Onyx grimaced, weaving around a projectile rock with impressive speed as she finished summoning her whip. The rebel's weapon cracked over the air, her eyes honed in onto the gem who had just come bursting from behind the stone. 3JJ quickly spotted the rebel gem rounding onto 7XB, and glanced over her shoulder to take inventory of the sapphire before she raced toward the rebel head-on, diving into a spin dash, flinging sand as she propelled toward the shadowy criminal.
In the flurry of seconds, there wasn't much time for the sapphire to think about what she would do. A familiar paralysis gripped her; facing danger, particularly combat against other gems, didn't seem to get easier for her. It seemed harder than it did last time, as if there was more weight to drag with her now, but she heaved herself together. Running purely on an adrenaline-like rush she scrambled to her feet, and tried to come up with a strategy. With both soldier's already tied into the action, she would have to come up with a way to communicate effectively to them without tipping off the opposition.
The rocky fusion was, admittedly, much more durable than 7XB expected or hoped she would be, weathering their strike much better than they had hoped; Their strike had caused the larger gem to stumble somewhat, and the clear quartz took just a brief moment to wonder, incredulously, what manner of gems this fusion consisted of before, with unexpected swiftness, she had them locked in a tight back-breaker hold. They hadn't the time to turn and see if 3JJ had been able to get Padparadscha out of the radius of the blast, and in situation that they currently found themselves in, 7XB could so little else but trust the Jasper had been able to get the sapphire out of the way.
The Quartz gem summoned their gauntlets now, glimmering hard-light shimmering to life around their bare hands, already sore and bruised blue. Expecting the Onyx to descend upon them at any moment, they pulled back as far as they could from 'Rocky’s’ grip, aiming an armored strike at her middle and, if landed, firing the blade out of the back of their gauntlet..
Attention split, Onyx was fairly easy prey for the Jasper who fell upon her like a speeding train.
Padparadscha caught site of her compatriot momentarily caught in the grip of the enemy, and her teeth clenched. Despite trusting they could get themselves out of the situation, panic sent her head spinning; the rush of the moment reminded her of things she wanted to forget, but couldn't. All of her attention funneled down on them as she tried to push herself into action.
But, just as the fusion was about to make use of her ability, she shot a wide-eyed look toward 7XB's blade as it fired, and her heavy form combusted into a huff of powdery smoke, flinging two gems out of their commingled form; an overcooked, sturdy grey agate, and a lanky, ruddy brown topaz. Both gems tried to recover from the hit, the agate scrambling against the sand to get to her feet, and the topaz groaning for a moment, clutching her midriff
3JJ drew out of her assault, landing on her feet with a resounding thud and a triumphant grin as she clutched a stone in hand. But upon closer inspection, her grin dropped and brows furrowed-- it was a regular Earth rock in her hands, not an Onyx's gem-core. She was certain she'd landed right on the gem, yet the rebel was missing. She dropped the rock, and glanced around in a frantic search for the unseen enemy; in broad daylight, with so little cover, how had the gem slipped past her? Her eyes went wide and she swiveled to see an extremely out of place shadow flitting over the sand, straight for the smaller gem among them, "Look out!" She dove back into a spin dash, attempting to get back in time to stop the Onyx from doing whatever she'd planned.
The sapphire spent those moments being relieved that the clear quartz had managed to evade a grim fate, but looked up to see 3JJ coming right toward her,"Huh?" Just as the sound was uttered, Onyx reached from her shadow form, slinging her whip out in an attempt to take a hostage.
'That couldn't have worked any better,’ the Quartz thought with some modicum of smug satisfaction as their glimmering blades sundered the fusion in two, right down the middle, 'now I just have to keep them separated.’ It should be easy enough, as neither of the off-colored gems looked particularly frightening; It would be easy enough to pick them off, they thought, especially with the momentum their strike carried. Just as they were sizing the reeling gems up, though, that bone-chilling warning washed over them.
They turned suddenly, what little color had flushed their cheeks draining away at the realization of what was happening: Somehow the slippery Onyx had evaded their fellow Quartz, and now she was headed right for Padparadscha! 7XB saw the whip, and they knew that there was only a second to react.
That was all they needed.
In a storm of sand and smoke 7XB was gone, leaving a runway of hot, molten glass behind them as they razor-dashed forward, their blades slicing easily through the glass-goo created by the shear heat of their movements. Their aim was to sever the whip in half. That, or get it caught up in their blades like a shoelace
