Ruby was happy to be praised, and likely even happier that the praise was coming from Lapis, and she smiled widely at that. Despite all that though, she still frowned ever so slightly at the tree that hadn't quite made it to the ground. "Thanks! I'll... uh, I'll just... fix that later." Then she walked over to watch Lapis do her work, blinking curiously and innocently at the work she was doing. Her eyes widened and her smile grew as the tree slowly became more and more easily breakable. "Oh... oh wow!" Ruby said as she began to understand what was going on. "Alright, stand back!"
Ruby walked over, reared back, and gave the tree one good punch. Compared to the other tree, this one might as well have been made out of glass. It crackled into a million tiny woodchips as she punched through it. This one, however, was headed in their direction rather than away, though Ruby was already pretty much out of the way.
Lapis seemed delighted that her plan worked, and let giggles escape at the exploding tree. She was somewhat clear of the falling tree herself, but something changed when she noticed the tree falling in their Ruby's direction. Logically, she could have seen that the tree wasn't going to fall on Ruby, but something about the angle of it coming down...
In those seconds of it coming down, her eyes faintly lost their lucidity, and was replaced by a reflective quality. The falling tree was no longer just a tree; it was an arm. She saw a big red arm swinging down at them.
"Watch out!" Lapis threw her arms down—now wings—and launched herself at Ruby, likely taking both of them off their feet. When the tree finally came down and her eyes regained their brightness, Lapis stared down at Ruby. Her cheeks flushed a dark blue and she pushed herself to a stand. "S-sorry. I thought it was coming down on you." She lingered there a moment, then went to retrieve her axe so they could move on to the next tree.
Ruby's eyes widened and she landed on her back with an 'oof' as the tree crashed down nearby them. She stared up at Lapis as she was flustered and as her cheeks flushed, and Ruby herself found her cheeks flushing a little too. Once Lapis had explained herself and headed on towards the next tree, she slowly pushed herself up. "It- it's okay! I'm glad you would have been there to save me if it was going to crash down on me!" Ruby reassured her with a small smile, walking over to the next tree.
"You really reacted fast, though - really fast. I didn't even know what was happening before you had already pushed me out of the way. Have you always been able to move that fast?"
Lapis brought the axe down (still awkwardly) on another tree. She blinked at Ruby though. "I was?"Had she been fast? She could probably check, but she didn't want to."I guess I was. I'm not sure. I do feel a little stronger now, I think. It may just be because I'm getting better at using my abilities, I think." She set the axe down and placed a hand to the tree, where the water slipped into the notch and started the weathering process again. "I don't know. Ever since I poofed after your squad attacked, I've felt different. It's almost like... hrm... like water knows where it's supposed to be now? As if we're one thing, instead of two things working together." She paused and took another second to think. "That's not good enough... okay, so birds-" She let herself sneer to show she still had disdain for them "-birds have their wings, and their feathers to let them fly. But they have these things at the top of the wings called bones—all animals have them I think—which give the wings strength and shape, and to attach the feathers." She returned to weather the tree, with water trickling out of her gem effortlessly. "I think... somehow... poofing reset something, so now the water sees my arms as... the bones of my wing. So now I don't even have to think about forcing water to go there. It just knows." She took a step back and allowed Ruby to have at the tree. "Does that make sense? Do you ever have to think about... making your body become hot?"
Ruby pondered that question for a moment, tilting her head back and forth as she considered the options - and then offhandedly smushing the part of the tree that had been weathered with an errant blow. This time, she remembered to make sure it fell away from them instead of towards them. "...well, no! I've always known how to heat up, though I never really get super hot unless I'm really angry." She noted, watching the tree fall down, and then looking at her open palms.
"Like, when you got poofed, my knuckledusters got really really hot, hotter than I've ever seen before. I mean sure, I've fought big monsters, but this is the first time I've ever felt so... so angry about it." She nodded some and looked over to Lapis. "I think it was because of you."
Lapis glanced back at her, frowning momentarily. What could Lapis have possibly done in that moment to have made her so angry? When she eventually figured out what Ruby had meant, she found herself blushing again with a strange little smile. Lapis was used to being praised, thanked, even complimented, but as someone who casually accepted themselves being of poorer quality than others, flattery was a new experience for her.
She suddenly felt a bubbling of new energy, and a need to let it out. She looked around at their fallen trees amidst a forest of others, and let out another laugh. "I have a new idea," She said as she summoned her wings. She lashed out at a nearby tree with a water tendril tipped with a big chunk of ice, then sprung to the side and slapped the tree in the same spot with a second tendril, tipped with more of a spike. It was a pair of solid hits, though it hardly chipped the tree. Momentarily abandoning their project, Lapis jumped into the air and went about slapping their premade forest of training dummies. In her manner of attacking, there were never any necessarily heavy hits. Range and attacking from weird angles seemed to be her point of focus. Ruby would see her purposefully dipping and weaving through branches, as if to practice maneuverability.
Ruby watched Lapis' initial face of flattery with a big smile, and then she wandered over to the center of the clearing to watch this display, eyes widened, and a little smile plastered on her face. This was the first time she'd ever seen Lapis do anything like this, and it was Ruby found herself cheering, arms raised above her head, happy to see Lapis doing so well with her maneuvers. "Woohoo! Go Lapis! Yaaay!" She shouted. "I guess we're going to have training dummies after all!" Every once and a while she'd step out of the way of a piece of debris or a spray of woodchips, but for the most part she just stood and smiled at Lapis.
Lapis continued to twist and aileron through the trees with a reaction time she might have always had, but never got to use. She intermittently smacked at trees while trying to keep herself aloft. This sometimes worked in her favor—falling would increase the momentum on a swing—and sometimes didn't. At one point, she enveloped herself with water and launched across the sky like a spear of ice. This didn't exactly work out as planned, because she pinballed from trees hitting her at both sides. The ice managed to protect her from the worst of the impact, and she hit the ground sliding on her butt. She blinked, then saw Ruby in the distance and waved. "Come on! This is great practice already!"
Ruby blinked as Lapis called out to her, and realized that she'd just had her eyes locked on Lapis the entire time rather than actually doing anything. This realization seems to startle her into action, and she runs over to a tree on her left, summoning her knuckledusters and obliterating two huge chunks of the trunk. She moved immediately to the next training dummy/downed tree, running down the length of the trunk and punching straight down into it, leaving scorched impacts all over it. Then she hopped down, grasping one of the impacts close to the center of the tree on either side, wincing slightly.
"Ggggggggggrrrah!" And then she tore the tree in half, sending woodchips in all directions with a deafening snap.
By the time Ruby had started deleting trees, Lapis had gotten back into the air to resume her training. The snapping sound of Ruby ripping a tree in half startled Lapis, to the point where she almost hit a tree. She frantically flapped her way around it and made as if she were about to hurry back to Ruby, but slowed when she realized nothing was wrong. She landed beside her again, eyes wide. "You... ripped a whole tree in half." She said in awe, as if that were not obvious. "Have you always been that strong?" The coincidence of this question failed to register for her. "Because we should really start working on ways to put our things together."
"Put our things together?" Ruby blinked, breathing a little audibly now that she had exerted herself to rip the tree in half. "You mean like fu- oh- no no, you mean like using our powers to do something together! Like strategy." Ruby said quickly, speaking over herself.
"We could do that. What did you have in mind? Like, you could distract something by flying around it, and I could run in and punch it really hard? Or maybe you could drop me on top of whatever it is and I could punch the heck out of it while you attack it from the sky?" She rattled off, counting on her hands, but also smiling with the different possibilities they had.
"Oo ooh, we could also..." A glob of water trickled out of her gem without any obvious bidding to do so. It zipped down her body and stopped between her ankles, where it froze and bound her legs together. "...hold someone like this, while you punch them! I did this one time—froze a corrupted gem's mouth so it couldn't close. I bet we could pair it with your punching too. Let's just try all of them." She glanced around to find the best place to start. "...Okay, I'll distract that tree-" She pointed towards a standing one. "-while you punch it, then I'll swoop down and freeze the legs on that one-" She pointed to a nearby downed tree. "-And then I'll come around and pick you up for the final attack!"
She probably might have normally taken a moment to consider any number of problems with this plan. However, she took a step forward and tripped, having not undone the ice at her legs. Now in an embarrassed panic, she scrambled to her feet and took to the sky. She flew around the first tree, first slapping it in the 'face' and then slapping it from the back. She circle once more to give Ruby time to do something, then made her way towards the downed tree. Just like she said, she swooped and slapped at the tree, leaving behind a little chunk of ice. The tree would have probably been incapacitated if it weren't a tree.
Now for the finale. Lapis regained altitude and swooped again, this time headed for Ruby. She failed to consider that she couldn't grab Ruby and use her arms as wings at the same time. She tried her best, but ended up tossing her wings away and having no time to re-summon them before colliding into Ruby for the second time today.
Ruby listened to the plan and nodded confidently. She winced when Lapis ate it right at the beginning, but smiled as she got up and kept going. As Lapis 'distracted' the tree, Ruby ran over and began smashing at the side of it, leaving more Ruby-sized spiked dents in the tree's bark. She managed to take a pretty significant chunk out of the tree, though not quite enough to topple it. Then she moved on to the tree that Lapis had managed to freeze the 'legs' of, and ran up the length of the trunk, smashing downwards with a big smile.
For the big finale, Ruby ran further away from the tree to get ready to be picked up, and as she saw Lapis starting to malfunction, she reached her arms up to catch her, which went badly, as Lapis essentially squished Ruby into the ground, chest to face. "OOOF!"
Now faceplanted on Ruby, Lapis peeked up at her with a big grin this time, rather than showing embarrassment. She giggled again and shook the hair out of her face. "That was great!" She sat up and shook her head once again, though this time it was to flick droplets of water out of her hair. "Well, except for that last part. I forgot that you might need to get on my back if I'm going to carry you anywhere. I thought you didn't like heights though anyway? Or maybe it was flying." She stood and held out her hands to help Ruby up. "Either way, maybe we should start building the arena now. I think we have enough trees and maybe we have an idea of how to work together now."
Ruby was a little in pain, but she did her best not to show it as she pushed herself to a stand with a couple of chuckles. "I mean, I don't really like being flown really high up, or being picked up for a long time, but if it's to fight a big corrupted gem or something, I can do it. Especially if it means helping keep you safe!" Ruby answered cheerfully, before walking over to one of the downed trees and beginning to drag it to the edge of the clearing.
"If you had grabbed me, I would have just been ready to jump free and punch chunks off of any of these trees. But you're right, we might as well get the arena set up. That way we can work on advanced maneuvers."
