A roar. It echoed throughout the strange, hole ridden stone of the entire area as though it were so much closer than it was.
Yet it was distant. Very distant. Kya had to remind herself that, but it was hard. Each roar sent a chill down her spine, and the closer ones often had her retreating. She couldn’t help it. She didn’t know what those noises were, but she’d seen those beasts that made them, and they were terrifying. Kya had always known this planet was hostile. She’d been warned when they dropped her off. Told to stay on guard for corruptions and avoid the kindergartens. Well, she’d certainly done well with that piece of advice, hadn’t she? She didn’t know what the heck corruptions were, and she knew precious little about kindergartens, but she’d managed to put two and two together and decided she really didn’t like the result.
At least she was still in one piece, right?
Sighing as she forced her muscles to relax, the lithe blue gem unfolded her knees from where they were tucked close to her chest, and twisted awkwardly so she could crawl toward the faint light at the end of her borrowed hole. Quartz, she’d decided, and long abandoned. She doubted they’d mind, but she still felt dirty and wrong cramped up in some hole that didn’t belong to her. At least it was roomier than hers. This gem had been pretty big. Still, Kya hadn’t chosen it for its size. She’d chosen it for how high it was.
Her discoveries so far had taught her that the quantity of ground monsters vastly outweighed those that could somehow scale the height of her hiding spot. And without a scent to follow that would lead them up here...she felt pretty secure. Not safe. She wouldn’t feel remotely safe here, all alone without a quartz or two to defend her. Yet at least she was safer.
‘It could always be worse’ she told herself.
Reaching the edge of her hole, the gem took a deep breath, which shuddered a little, she couldn’t help but note, and peeked her head out. It was dark. It was always dark, but this time it was completely dark. She’d gotten a bit of a hang of the cycles and strange happenings on this planet, even if they still confused her, and after a moment of staring out she sat back on her heels with her hands in her lap and decided quite confidently that it was night, and that the sky waters would fall soon.
Her spine tingled and a slight heat rose in her cheeks. The knowledge was astonishingly exciting. It made her feel so wrong and so right at the same time, no matter how small such knowledge was.
This time, the roar that echoed through was louder, closer. It was still far away, but those damned echoes...involuntarily, a squeak of alarm left her, and it echoed around before she could clasp her hand over her mouth. Cursing herself silently, Kya scrambled back from the edge and pressed her back firmly against the edge of the hole, desperately holding back a whimper as she begged it not to have heard her.
The silence stretched on. No roaring, no giant footsteps, no rumbling. Blue eyes squeezed shut, and she released a slight, relieved whimper. Hardly a breath. Her hand fell away from her mouth and balled into a fist in her lap, fingers pinching the material of her dress as though to ground herself.
That could have been worse, too.
