Assumptions were a dangerous thing to make, 7XB knew that as well as any gem in their position, but the potential, the meaning, lingering behind what the Amethyst was saying sent a chill down their spine nonetheless, their pale flesh prickling at the thought of the insinuation. They would need to compartmentalize all this information into what they knew was true, and that which they dreaded to even imagine and..tuck that away for now. Clearly 6UE had some knowledge about the Lotus, as she had not overtly seemed surprised by their mention of it, as well as its overall function- grim as it truly was. Much of what the other quartz gem said held up against the file they'd read, but the theories on what she planned to do with it..
Later, later! Facts first.
The Yellow Diamond project to create some new, elite type of Quartz? Their pride wanted nothing more than to deny it, but it made too much sense to do so. Clearly Padparadscha had mistaken them for a member of that Conclave when they breached the her facility- what else would she have thought?
Ame had wound down from her explanation of the theory she'd concocted after months of working on the quarry that the Lotus would eventually be built over; or, she hoped, it would remain a hole in the ice, with no massive, destructive weapons fitted for it. It seemed 7XB was still interested in hearing more, but Ame had quietly hoped they would be satisfied with what she'd already told-- it was dangerous, after all, to be talking about this stuff. Of course there was more, but the more she said, the higher the cost of being caught. She glanced over her shoulder to make sure the door was still behind her, and began to slowly back peddle toward it as she gave a cheesy grin and held up a broad hand to wave at the Clear Quartz.
"Uh-- actually, that's it! As they say, adios, sayonara, good luck with your mission!" The amethyst flipped around and scampered through the door, intending to make her exit while she could, and hoped the industrial landscape would give her a quick, easy chance to slip away if they were to pursue.
The small yard she'd stepped into was piled with rusted junk, corrugated metal and bricks, slabs of old seasoned wood stacked with nails crookedly jutting from them. Nearby were the entrances of other abandoned, creaking buildings, whose uses were not all the way apparent to the inexperienced quartz, but she made a break for it.
It all made so much more sense to them now, just what they'd heard so far had connected a great many scattered thoughts in their overcrowded mind. It was coming together: the quarry, the Lotus..the Quartz had been unable to root out the out the connection between the two things, and honesty they'd been so worried about other things that it hadn't popped up at all, but now it all made sense. A massive laser weapon like that was going to require an equally massive mount for stability, and that was before you factored in all of the technical capable needed to calibrate and aim such a titanic device.. but they could no sooner get caught up in the details of it's operation than they were reminded of exactly what powered it. Gems, Padparadschas to be specific.
“Wait, where the!..” And then the slippery Amethyst was gone, leaving them no choice but to gallop after her. Clearly she knew quite a bit more than she was telling. It didn't matter to them if she was afraid, they needed this information.
As she scurried around to the next building she peered over her shoulder, an her eyes shot open wide when she realized they were still after her,"W-what!" She called back with some exasperation; she still wanted to avoid any kind of fight, but all the same it would be better to stay away from homeworlders like 7XB nonetheless, let alone giving them information about matters she wanted to distance herself from.
She slowed and peered over her shoulder a bit, but kept an eye on where she was heading,"I complied didn't I, the info is all yours now!" Ame pulled between rows of stacked, rusted silos while her voice echoed from the brick and concrete. She thought back on the interactions she'd witnessed between Padparadscha and 7XB, and wondered what was really going on there. Padparadscha had often lauded the clear quartz operative, yet it seemed the two of them were at odds over something Ame didn't have the context to understand,"If you're trying to protect your Diamond, well, that's it! There is a crazy padparadscha sapphire trying to blow up her covert frigate and stop the secret weapon's testing! I mean, that's pretty huge, I'd go report that if I were you," Her words were angled a bit pointedly, but something told her she would have to try something else if she were going to shake this gem,"Or, stars, you might wanna just steer clear altogether, tell your manager you didn't find anything, and get back to your usual sched, because from one quartz to another-- all this secret bunk is what ruined my nice gig," The amethyst kept weaving through the silos, allowing her voice to bounce from the old metal
The small lead that the Amethyst had been able to gain in their moment of contemplation seemed to be paying off- Even if she didn't know the city as well as as human might, she very likely knew it better than 7XB. They lost sight of the other Quartz gem amongst the veritable maze of silos- huge towers of flimsy, stamped tin that they knew humans used to store excess food and other such wasteful things. But these were old and rusted, and it would have been easy enough for them to bring the aged structures down but.. should they?
Maybe 6UE had a point, some truth in her voice even as it bounced off of the metal and concrete that surrounded them, making her that much more difficult to track. Surely they had enough information to act, didn't they? But what exactly did that entail at this point? Any information passed on to their superiors would go badly- even if they'd been lauded for their defense of Yellow Diamond, they would still be privy to highly classified information, and the Clear Quartz dared not think of what would become of the Sapphire. Her plan would be her ruin, one way or another, but they couldn't just let her go through with it- their drive to protect their Diamond would not allow them to act oblivious. They needed to save the Sapphire from her own plan, to bring her back from the edge of treason and madness. Surely this was yet another example of what the planet did to gems who lingered too long here.
“Maybe..maybe you're right.” They called out solemnly, even as they continued to stalk like a great bear through the silos. “But that's not why you're so nervous, is it 6UE?” As desperate as they were to seek out Padparadscha, there was something else afoot here; Mistakes couldn't be afforded.
The quiet that proceeded her words first left her feeling a bit nervous, but then their words hit her hears, eyebrows shooting up. The question gave her a start, and her foot caught over a stray pipe, knocking it clean across the floor until it smacked into one of the silos, sending a boom through the old building. Ame stumbled forward, grimacing as she anticipated all of the silos to careen over like dominoes, but for now it seemed stable.
Readjusting herself, she cleared her throat and tried to think of a good answer. She'd gotten a notion that 7XB was persistent, but it was clear this quartz was not the type to give up so easily. With a sigh, she kept doggedly forward, trying to weave her way through the building toward the next,"What am I hiding from?" She repeated, mostly to buy herself some time. The air hung empty but for the reverb from her steps, until she let her mouth fall open again,"From-- from gems like that wacko sapphire! Like those shady prototype gems! From gems like you!"Agitation tinged her tone as she kept trying to shake off the clear quartz,"All the time I think, if I hadn't been picked for that job, if it had been any other Amethyst-- I'd still be doin' what I've always done--" She caught herself in the middle, before her venting could become a full on rant, and stopped quite abruptly, swallowing the rest of the pent up irritation she'd held onto ever since she first started doing classified missions. "I'm just an Amethyst-- if it gets out that I know what I know, and I'm walking around telling other gems all this crazy stuff, who knows what's going to happen to me!" The agitation seemed to slip more into lament now as her feet scuffed across the concrete,"Who knows! Maybe this is another one of those tests and you're gonna report straight to em!"
The 'clang’ of the pipe impacting against something metallic as 6UE stumbled over it was like a beacon to the Quartz and, in contrast with the echoes that bounced around less reliably, they could easily pinpoint the general direction in which it came from. Hopefully, from that, they could deduce approximately where she was. The Quartz had only sought to question the Amethyst and then send her back to her duties, yet the longer they tried to talk with her the more nervous and standoffish she became- and that was coming from them. Clearly she was holding out on them, but unless it somehow related directly to Padparadscha, how much time could they really afford to waste on it? It was wounding to hear them called the Sapphire crazy, but based strictly up what she had told them, could they blame her for thinking she'd lost her marbles?
Duty remained, though- Whatever Padparadscha's plan, it's not like it was going to happen any faster just because they knew about it. 'Gems like me?’ What did she mean by that, exactly? Maybe they hadn't been.. themselves since the wool had been pulled from over their eyes by the rebellious arsenic, but surely, given the present encounter, their loyalty was undoubted? “I did that to help you, 6UE,” they sighed insistently, prowling forward, then right, in the general direction of the other gem, “ you were not ready for field operations. We all have to put the work in. Its just part of the job..”
Her nape shivered as 7XB's voice closed in on her, and she grimaced,"Yeah, part of the job-- just to help-- that's what I told myself too," She muttered, knowing the other quartz would soon catch up to her,"But now my whole unit is in danger, and I don't know how to explain to them what's going on, or if I even should," Amethyst had to wonder how things could have gone differently, if Padparadscha had chosen any other unit of amethysts to work on her death-ray, if 7XB had made a different suggestion back then, or even if she had a different experience on Kindergarten Sigma, where would she be?
Would she be here, rounding the corner only to stop square in her tracks, faced with the clear quartz tracking her down? Ame still couldn't be clear on 7XB's motives; in times like these she was a bit envious of that truth sensing ability her ex-employer had, but nonetheless she had to make a determination. A rebelling amethyst didn't have too many other options in this scenario, at least none that 6UE herself could think of. "Whatever it is you think you need to know, you're not gonna figure it out from me," She paused, squaring her shoulders, broad hand hovering near the gemstone on her hip. Her eyes flicked across the surroundings, in search of momentary advantages, but her attention stayed on 7XB as the tap of her feet slowed.
It was surprising, jarring even, to turn the corner and come face to face with 6UE so suddenly. It was nothing they had not expected, nor did she look overly different, at least at a glance, but there was something about her: the clear quartz felt it. There was a certain desperation about her, like an injured animal backed into a corner. A fairly common expression, truly, with organics who came across the burly Quartz gem, but rare amongst their fellow gems, except for, well..
Their hawkish gaze fell to where the Amethyst's hand lingered, threateningly, near her gemstone. Their lips pulled into a razor-thin frown: Was she so desperate to be rid of them that she would consider attacking them? As she spoke so frankly, the older gem could not help but to grimace. “Whatever danger your unit is in, this isn't the way to help them, Amethyst.” They attempted to remind, rather than chastise. No good would come of needless fighting. They had too much to do, and only suspicion to go on otherwise. “We are not enemies, 6UE.”
Her jaw set at their words. If they knew she had officially joined the crystal gems not long ago, would they be saying that? It seemed they didn't know, perhaps her decision to rebel didn't have anything to do with the reason why 7XB had tracked her down, but she still couldn't help but to feel they'd soon figure it out anyway. Though tension continued to cinch her muscles, what they said gave her pause, reminding her of another tense moment on the arctic plain, when the same thing was said between them. There was a silence, but for the reverb of cars passing and footsteps bouncing around the old brick building like ghosts from the past.
"Maybe you're right, maybe I'm making all the wrong moves," She finally piped up, lament in her tone as she continued,"But if I don't do something--" Ame paused again, backpedaling a few steps. The gem realized she was far too out of her mind, making snap judgments and acting on them, letting her fears dictate her actions. Being on the run from Homeworld had kept her more on edge than she'd ever been. She feared that telling 7XB anything would end in the downfall of her closest friends, but she'd already let loose something dire. There was another silent moment; her shoulders slumped, hands falling loosely at her sides.
"Honestly, I don't think it's a good idea, for you or me, to be talking about this. Maybe we're not enemies, but that's all the more reason to leave this stuff alone. Unless..." Her eyes flicked away, and she swallowed. It seemed to be a bit of a long shot, but she'd been working alone to keep her unit safe-- it was difficult to say the least,"M-maybe you could help?"
Their gaze, though only slightly, somewhat softened as 6UE spoke so dejectedly, like an ancient iceburg setting out in the sun and softening, only to refreeze the following evening. “It's what they don't tell you about being a soldier, Amethyst.” The Quartz gem admitted solemnly, reaching up to thread their fingers through their snowy mane, hooking it back behind their ears. “We are all created with the basic knowledge to serve our purpose, yes, but certain things must come with time.” They paused a moment, adding,” And experience, of course.” They could understand 6UE’s frustrations, or at least they thought they did. Being a fresh cut was hard, they knew that, and she'd managed to get caught up in something far above her abilities.
Then again, were they that much better off? This wasn't exactly in their field of expertise either, but they'd been left with little choice; Their connection with the persnickety Sapphire had already seen to that.
“Help?..” They question with a lifted brow, gaze increasingly unwary. What could she have needed from them when just moments ago she had seemed eager to escape them. “What do you..I..will if I can.” It all depended, of course, on what she wanted. The Clear gem has their suspicions..
While 7XB seemed more contemplative than combative, Ame still couldn't shake her nerves. Tension snaked up her arms and tightened like a thick rope as the other quartz began speaking again. Her eyes shifting to the side as she anticipated some manner of lecturing from them. Despite her glowering toward the vaguely reflective surface of the silos, Ame knew that the clear quartz was an insightful gem, so she listened anyway. Part of her had to wonder how long this gem had been one of Homeworld's loyal, and how much longer they might go on, allowing themselves to be a tool for the aid of the colonialist march. Her eyes had trailed down to her feet by the time they moved to address her request for help.
Her eyes flicked up, a twinkle of hope growing at the notion that they might help her, even if she had been acting entirely too suspicious this whole time. "Look, uh-- I don't really know what kind of work you and that sapphire are doing, but she clearly respects you," She shrugged,"I mean, there were times she would not stop talking about how great you are, she always takes your advice," Sometimes Ame had to wonder how 7XB had made such a huge impression on the sapphire, but Ame hadn't paid all that much attention herself. "It's pretty strange, because she doesn't give most other quartz the time of day. If anyone is going to get her to listen to reason, it's probably you," She hoped that her true request would be seen in her words, but she decided to be less cagey about it. A weak grin unfolded onto her expression and she cupped the back of her neck with her palm,"So, I guess what I'm asking is...you know, be a voice for them, for the ones she wont listen to," Her smile melted, the corners of her lips falling as her hand slipped back down to her side. They knew the trials and tribulations of a gem soldier, so Ame hoped they would empathize with amethyst unit 6 when the time came for it.
Despite the cool breeze that blew off the ocean, weakened yet still discernible by the time it reached them amidst the maze of rusted metal, warmth blossomed upon the clear gem’s pale cheeks as they were reminded of the regard in which the Padparadscha Sapphire held them, their fair complexion stained by the faintest blue- a fact that they could only hope the other Quartz would remain oblivious to. It was one thing to hear such things from Padparadscha herself, but to have it recounted to them by another gem made it that much more.. tangible to them, for better or worse.
What she then asked of them was considerably more earnest than the Commander had expected, and it resonated with them as a soldier. There had been many a time, and would very like be more to come, when they had served as muscle for some of Yellow Diamond's more intellectually-inclined gems. Gems like Padparadscha.
Well, no, not like Padparadscha, now that they thought about it. Sapphires, maybe, but they were nothing like her. No gem they ever seen had stuck with them like her. They couldn't believe that the peachy, kind gem they knew carried any malice towards her Quartz soldiers, though as a Sapphire she certainly wasn't going to take any advice from them, but more and more 7XB was becoming afraid that the gem they cared for so dearly was no longer in her right mind. They had no idea what she might do right now. With what they shared, didn't they owe it to the gems under her command to be a be an advocate for their well-being? That was, of course, assuming that the Sapphire would listen to them at all after what happened; It was like a punch in the gut to consider that she may no longer feel anything in regards to them.
“I..yes, I will get her to see reason.” They said definitively, more for themself than anything else.
A thick lavender brow popped up before Ame wrangled it back down. She didn't realize that an influential gem like 7XB was so easily embarrassed, though part of her could see it as a quartz; rarely was praise handed to the gems who worked beneath the aristocracy, but for instances of truly exceptional performance, and was perhaps shocking to hear. Though, she didn't spend much time preoccupied with another quartz's emotions-- she needed to keep a handle on her own.
The moment spent waiting for their answer seemed to pull onward at a much more reluctant pace than her racing mind, and managed to make her head feel like it was doing three-sixties. Ame hoped she wouldn't start flushing herself, feeling so cornered as to essentially beg for help from someone who should've been her enemy. Though, it was all so strange to see gems from the past, like 7XB, who had helped construct the world she had known for the first thirty years of her life. No matter how many times she told herself she would commit to the Crystal Gem lifestyle, it was a lot harder to rebel than they made it seem.
Then came their subdued response. Now both of her brows were floating, eyes widening as they agreed to at least try to get the sapphire thinking more about the quartz gems under her command. Ame gave a sigh, attempting to expel some of that winding pressure in her limbs, but she still felt like trying to make an escape before she said the wrong thing. Miraculous as it was for them to accept that much, she still had her doubts. Her eyes trailed around the room, seemingly absent in thought, and the soldier almost subconsciously took another step back before catching herself. She scratched the back of her head nervously,"Erm, well...I guess I owe you the answer to one more question..."
It was reassuring, if nothing else, to see her concern for her fellow Amethyst soldiers, but it was impossible for them to put that burning question, that suspicion, out of their mind, and whilst what she had asked them had not, truly, been all that out of place, the request to act in her stead, paired with her evasive nature up until now, only confirmed the Quartz gem’s fears, though they let little more snow than the knitting of their brow. 6UE was a young quartz, as they had been so very long ago, without much seasoning. It was easy to be bright and idealistic when you had seen little more than the Earth. Their icy gaze, having lifting towards the stars, towards Homeworld, leveled towards Ame once again, lips pulled into a light frown.
“One question?” They repeated sternly, lifting a thick brow, “ Alright.” Of all the questions they could have asked, only one presented itself to them.
“What have you done, 6UE? What are you doing, what..is going on?” One question, stretched into three.
