This place wasn’t right anymore.
Well, in truth, it never really was to begin with. Kya had never felt safe here. Yet it had always been abandoned, with the exception of the strange beasts, so dumb and easy to avoid if one could stay high and quiet. Yet now...the beasts were growing restless. She was growing restless. She didn’t want to remain here anymore. There had been gems, now, rebels even. Dangerous rebels that lied, cheated, and shattered. Sure, Bronzite had seemed nice enough, but she was still a rebel.
She couldn’t be trusted. Or maybe Kya was just afraid.
Wasn’t really that much of a stretch.
Sighing softly, the blue gem let her eyes fall shut for a moment longer, resting her head against the back of her newly chosen quartz hole. She liked to change them up every so often, especially now that her previous choice had been compromised. Yet one thing remained, she liked to stay high, well off the ground. At least these things weren’t too hard to fit into for such a lithe gem.
Still, remaining here so long...boredom raged a silent war with fear in her mind. She wanted to leave, to run or scream, do something other than just hide here...but she was afraid. This planet was hostile, filled with rebels, and her only protection was shattered before her eyes by the very gems she wanted to avoid. Her mission was a failure, no Homeworld gem had sought her out, she had no contact, and to make matters worse, she was in an abandoned place filled with these....things. These dangerous, brainless beasts that only wanted to kill.
Sure, Kya had made compromises for her boredom. She’d think, she’d learn, she’d fly, and she’d....drift off. Close her eyes and let her mind drift into some other strange world within her head, where she could do and be whatever she wanted. It was a pleasant place, generally, a place she wished to stay...and going there always seemed to rest her well. She was unfamiliar with sleep, of course, but it was certainly a pleasant occurance. Until roars and voices would jolt her awake again in a full blown panic before she could realise the distance.
This time, it had been a faint roar that woke her up, or more like a beast’s groan of pain. It had sent terror through her all the same, but she’d been sitting silently in the dark just listening, waiting...and nothing more had happened. It hadn’t made another peep. She wasn’t sure if that was better or worse.
Forcing herself to relax, at least a little, Kya opened her eyes once more and crawled closer to the edge of the hole. The light was meagre, and she found herself automatically calling a brighter light to her hand, using it like a torch as she peered about. The ground was far below, but that gave her comfort. She wasn’t sure whether to be glad or not that it was night, but at least it wasn’t raining this time.
Letting her light die away, Kya sat back on her heels and peered out into the night, letting her eyes adjust to the darkness. Only to see movement from the corner of her eye, hearing thudding steps. Hand clasping over her mouth before she could release a squeal of alarm, Kya ducked back slightly and peered cautiously into the darkness, watching the faint shape as it headed straight toward her.
A beast, and it must have spotted her light. Kya knew she ought to run, to fly away. Even her wings formed as though to remind her this, and yet...she felt rooted to the spot, watching the creature as it came toward her, wondering, waiting...terrified.
This couldn’t possibly end well.
