It had been weeks since Obsidian departed from the Prime Kindergarten. She remained wholly unsure whether the “pick a direction and walk” method was the best option for finding what she was looking for, but given Obsidian Cut-6 soldiers were not built to navigate unfamiliar territory, it seemed to be her only choice. That – and the gem had little direction otherwise. Thus, Obsidian walked for days on end. The dominant human life forms of the planet were not openly aggressive with her when encountered, but given their perplexity and tendencies to try to approach, she often steered clear and kept mostly to undeveloped forested areas and fields. She paused very few times in her walking, except in the event she discovered different life forms. She would spend small amounts of time simply observing them, for the most part, before continuing on her way.
This leg of Obsidian’s journey brought her in the late afternoon to an expanse of open water – a large bay area with land visible across the way and a connecting bridge some few miles in the distance. The surrounding wetlands were vibrant in varying shades of green color, and sounds of various Earth-inhabiting creatures filled the area.
Obsidian stepped through the trees and underbrush up onto the beach facing the water, and she held nestled into one arm two muskrats each nibbling on bundles of greenery. The gem had accumulated some scratches and scuffs of dirt, along with some vines and grasses draped along her shoulders and legs. She paused as she looked out across the water, then she set the two muskrats down into the sand, chirping and nibbling away. They looked around.
In the wetlands near Obsidian, a little frog sat on a lily pad. Both the frog and its platform slowly rose as a pair of big blue eyes peeked out from underneath, then went down again as the eyes retreated. A moment later, Lapis stepped out of the pond as if she were going up stairs. On her shoulder was a portion of algae, not too dissimilar to the plants adorning Obsidian.
She quietly stepped over to Obsidian, not necessarily creeping but probably just forgetting to make any noise to let her know she was there. Assuming Obsidian didn't spot her before she got close, she'd pretty much moseyed right up beside her. She watched the muskrats doing their ratty thing. "...I like your animals."
Obsidian did seemed surprised at the arrival of the new presence, but it would seem this was largely because she didn't assume a threat - she did not take any defensive stance upon seeing the new gem and instead remained still. "-a Lapis Lazuli?" she questioned in mild disbelief and spoke as if she was familiar, "I am first met with an entourage of aristocratic gems, and now a Lapis Lazuli."
She paused in thought, which brought her back to Lapis's introductory comment. She blinked and looked down at them seemingly freely scampering away towards the brush. "Not - my animals," she answered quietly, then looked at her with a tiny, subtle look of anxiousness, "Lapis Lazuli, if you are a presence on this Earth planet, are you assigned to building a new kindergarten?"
Lapis blinked at that. "Well... no... I'm a presence on this planet because we are trapped here!" She said with a bright, cheerful tone. "But I wouldn't have been assigned to this planet anyway. They already began developing Earth, which means I would have to move on to a brand new planet." Her speaking slowly drifted off as she her gaze moved towards the sky. It's as if a thought had suddenly taken her mind hostage.
Her returned her attention to Obsidian, and her smile returned in full as well. "Why do you ask? Are you looking for a Kindergarten, because you're going the wrong way if you are." She turned around and pointed in a vague direction. "My kindergarten is alll the way back there. It should just take you a few weeks of walking."
"I just came from that kindergarten," she stated in a soft, matter-of-fact tone without looking back behind her. She shook her head. "It is, for all intents and purposes, out of operation. I was stationed to defend it. The rebellion happened, and I was struck during the fighting. When I reformed, I waited for a time to be reclaimed and reassigned, but... My Diamond has more critical matters to attend to."The muskrats made their way to the edge of the underbrush and ventured underneath it towards a pond amidst the wetlands, one can assume for more food. Obsidian glanced back to observe for a moment, then her lips squished to one side as she leaned back and looked at the sky. "I am stuck too," she concluded quietly.
"That's okay, being stuck on Earth isn't so bad," Lapis said as she dropped onto her butt. She physically pulled a blob of water from her gem, then combined it with a handful of sand in her other hand. She set the wet mount down and began building a snowman, except it was a sandman. "I was poofed before I was even given a mission. I think I was meant to sort of figure it out on my own anyway, but I think my Diamond was supposed to tell me which direction to go in first." She paused for a moment, then shrugged. "I've been on Earth in this time for a year now, and I've met a lot of Homeworld Gems but none of them have been able to contact the Diamonds. But I don't mind; in fact I don't think I want to leave. Now that I'm here, I make my own assignments." She paused once again, then quickly tried to reassure Obsidian. "But I'm not a rebel, please don't poof me."
Obsidian blinked in surprise at Lapis's reassuring. "I'm not going to poof you. I was built to defend and protect gem operations, not... that. And the state of this Earth is confusing to me. Without my assignment, I do not know... what I should be doing."
She paused to think and in this time watched Lapis create her sand mass. Obsidian frowned gently, but she also seemed a little curious. "What - kinds of assignments do you make for yourself? What do you do, and what is there to do to feel...?" She trailed off, not quite finishing her question. She knelt down in front of Lapis to observe closer, then pointed. "You are creating new terrain for Earth? Are these structures for the small life forms that inhabit this planet?"
All of a sudden, the two would be interrupted by the sounds of trees falling over and crashing to the ground fast-approaching. These sounds were very fast-approaching - as a raging monster crashed into the clearing the two were in, multi-colored and padded with fur all along its back. Attached to that fur was a Ruby, who was half-screaming half-punching this beast. "LAPIS!" The Ruby yelled as she tugged on the beast's fur, causing it to roar in anger and hold its ground, bucking Ruby high into the air and onto her face in the grass. While she went to get up, the beast looked down at the other two gems and gave a mighty roar, which moved the trees and scared any nearby animals away.
Lapis blinks and jumps to her feet, suddenly remembering what she was supposed to being doing here. "Uh... that's one of my assignments!" She flung her arms out to either side as water rushed to envelop them, then she took off into the sky towards the creature while flapping her arms like a bird. "I'm coming Ruby!"
She gave the creature a wide berth and tried to flap around to either its back or flanks. Then she swooped in and—while having to momentarily stop flying and begin falling—threw her arm out in a flailing motion, with the wing extending into something more like a tendril. At the tip of the tendril was a chunk of ice used to bludgeon. She fell into the creature after getting her hit in, but used it as a platform to get herself back in the air a moment later. In general, it seemed like her purpose was to distract and draw attention away from the others.
Obsidian sprung up onto her feet upon the entrance of the beast, looking mildly startled for a single moment. She watched Lapis shoot into the air and get her hit in, but there was not much more of a delay until Obsidian was responding to the attacker without hesitation. She pulled out her gem weapon - a battle axe - from her gem and immediately charged the beast with her axe faced straight for it. Her gem glowed a bright white as the ground beneath the beast seemed to rumble, followed by a wall of spiky black rock shooting up beneath it, scaling about eight feet tall and five feet wide. Obsidian would leap up towards the beast in a jabbing attack during its response to the wall.
The beast was certainly surprised as the ground under it was raised up, placing it higher up, but the movement of the Earth caused it to look away from Lapis, spotting Obsidian charging it, and giving it a second to leap off the spike and spin around to figure out its situation. By the time it was on the ground, Ruby had it by the ankle and was pulling it, in an attempt to drag it down and possibly hold it there.
"Lapis, who is that?!" Ruby yelled out to Lapis, who was probably still in the air. The beast roared and roared, trying its best to break out of Ruby's grip. And it was doing a pretty good job, considering how much larger it was.
The sudden wall had apparently startled Lapis enough to drive her back for a second, but she returned to the fight shortly. "She didn't tell me yet, but she's a friend!" Lapis shouted back, whacking the creature in the face as she passed overhead. She then resumed her pattern of harassing and hitting it, but could now go behind the wall for more cover. "It's too big for me to freeze, Ruby! You're going to have to punch it!"
She went behind the wall and then flew up high, then attempted to land behind creature beside Ruby. With the water on her arms, she shaped it into a sort of shield shape and froze it, and tilted backward almost as if she were making a platform of herself for Ruby.
Obsidian landed on top of the wall after her leap and miss at the creature. She watched it jump down and followed Lapis' and Ruby's movements closely, taking note of their plan.
"I can hold the creature down!" Obsidian shouted from the top of the wall down to the other gems. She jumped and soared down with a dip of her head, and with arms outreached, would attempt to land on the beast. She would try to wrangle it, her arms grabbing around its neck, and would attempt to pull it onto the ground with her. Obsidian would likely have an easier time than Ruby given her substantially larger size, and the manner in which she fought the creature would suggest she is well-trained, or well-experienced at the very least.
Obisidan certainly did much better holding the creature down than Ruby ever could have, and despite it roaring up at her, she'd manage to pin it to the ground with a little bit of effort. Ruby saw this happening and looked over as Lapis landed next to her. Seeing the ice shield form, Ruby gave a confident nod and summoned her weapons, two ruby red knuckledusters, and backed up away from Lapis, before charging full speed at the shield. She jumped, then (probably using some of Lapis' own force,) was launched off the shield like a trampoline, flying into the air and shooting back down towards the creature.
Ruby crashed down through the creature's belly, narrowly avoiding Obsidian but managing to gut-punch the creature so hard that it poofed.
Lapis spun around and seemed to beam at Ruby when she launched herself off the shield, despite still being in a fight. Thankfully, the monster had poofed with that attack so there were no repercussions. She let out a sigh of relief and hurried over to the poofed gem. With it bubbled and sent away to some unknown place, she returned her attention to Obsidian. "So yeah! That's... one of our jobs now. Something called corruption is affecting a lot of gems on Earth, so Ruby and I are trying to figure out a cure for it. The Diamonds haven't actually given us this mission officially, but... we figured it was important anyway. You can come home with us if you want to help!" She looked between the two with a sudden blink. "Oh right, Ruby this is Obsidian. Obsidian, this is Ruby."
