The music started to trail off, the sounds were becoming less and less noticable untill there was nothing to be heard. Pearl did it to answer Sapphire's odd question. Maybe not odd, just very unexpected. Melody never in her life was asked if she actually liked listening to music. And it was something she was doing her whole life. At first she wanted to say that it didn't matter, it was probably something she was suppose to say. But it would make her sound like a hypocrite. She chose her next words wisely "I believe any kind of sound can affect our mood. I am not an expection. Each track in my gem is connected to the certain memory. The time I recorded it or the last time I played it. Naturally, it can affect my emotional state. But it doesn't matter in my case. She continued after a short while "We Pearls are made to make a specific gem happy. I feel relaxed when I know that my... that gems in here are relaxed. I knew I had to do something when I noticed the way you acted in the previous room." She moved her head away, pretending to fix her hair while in reality he was blushing due to embarrassment. Small pinkish marks appeared on her cheeks. She wished she didn't wear a handband at the time, her medium lenght hair would hide her face "It is my function." She added with a quiet tone.
She listened, sitting straight, and her hands in her lap, chin titled upward slightly as the pearl spoke. Though, as the pearl denied the importance of her own emotions, Padparadscha's head canted forward, manicured brows drawing in and up enough to make her large, glittering eyes appear just a bit wider. Her lips pursed as she thought back to the pearl's allusion to her previous patron, but before she could ask any questions to that regard, her brows flew up as if released by shock at the flushed cheeks on the pearl. She craned her neck, trying to follow as Melody looked away. The sapphire was fascinated by the gem's expression; her curiosity only got the better of her for a moment before she pulled back up so quickly that her curls bounced lightly out of place.
"After all that talk, you're shy about your own stress? I do hope mine wasn't so contagious!" Her pearly teeth showed as she gave a cheeky grin, and shook her head before tucking the loose strands of hair back. Her eyes darted to the ground, before trailing back up to meet with Melody's,"Well, any gem would be lucky to have you on her retinue. I do feel relaxed, thank you," Her usually strong, clear timbre was subdued as she spoke. She tapped her chin with one lithe finger, then tilted her head as she peered at the pearl,"--So when did you acquire that song, then? It is a lovely sound, one I haven't experienced before,"
"What? No no.. I.. uhmm" She let out a little sight "You figured me out. Congratulations." She couldn't help, but smile a little, expecially after Sapphire's big grin. It was good to know she was still good at makimg some gems happy. Even during those hard times, gems were still able to find happiness. That is why Melody was often proud of being a Pearl. As a Pearl she felt bond to try to make others gems happy. It was never stated, but she trully believed that was a reasons Pearls existed.
She grined a little bit wider, her eyes sparkling like two little shards "Thank you, I am sure any Pearl would be lucky to have you as their master."
Cream changed her position to have her leg crossed. Her arm was supporting her head "Ohh yes, It was a long time ago. It was during my visit on one of Yellow Diamond's colony. I remember my Zircon was really stressed at the time and asked me to record it. The music was composed by artists from Blue Court, it was being played in some buildings that Blue Diamond had a big influence on." She gazed around the room, thinking about those events. "For some reason those composers were often potrayed with funny helmets, I am not sure why."
She didn't often wonder whether or not her own pearl, Pink Pearl, was lucky to have her, though it did come as a pleasant thought. The two of them had been through many things together, but it remained the professional relationship between a pearl and a patron. As the Cream Pearl went on, Padparadscha listened intently, sparks of curiosity going off in her gaze. She tried to imagine being there, seeing the orchestral gathering for herself and hearing the energizing tones that had been created, to see it as this pearl had witnessed it.
"Helmets?" She echoed, tilting her head to the side as her imagination stalled, but she carried on with a smile,"Fascinating! I've never had such an experience-- well, except..." She thought back to the human gathering she had stumbled upon while on mission, lights and glitter flying everywhere in the middle of a harsh winter in the city. Remembering clearly that night, there was a warmth that couldn't be forgotten. However, a memory wasn't as warm as the present moment, where she could speak with this pearl like a friend,"--Ah, I don't think it counts. At any rate I wonder where those composers got their inspiration. Your Zircon seems to have a great appreciation for music..." She spoke almost idly, unsure of why exactly this Cream Pearl no longer worked for the Zircon. After all, she seemed to be an excellent servant by Padparadscha's standards. Her curiosity about the subject only grew, like a pressure beneath her tongue, but she kept herself from going into an interrogation on such a sensitive topic.
She looked at Padparadsha, wondering what was she about to say, but didn't want to mention it for some reason. "Nothing leaves the walls of this room, but it is okay if you don't want to talk about it. Your comfort is what matters right now." She said honestly. Pearl was aware that some stories can bring bad memories, but sometimes it was also the only way to move on.
"Those helmets and their uniforms reminded me at the time of robonoids... just more humanoid. It would make sense since a lot of their melodies were created by using sounds made by various machines, but I can't be sure." She sighed and smiled softly while playing with her hands when her dear Zircon was mentioned "Yes, that is true." She looked at Sapphire and quickly changed the topic. "It is a shame a lot of gems don't listen to music more often. That is why I try to play something quiet from time to time when noone needs me in the medical station."
Her lips hung open for a moment when the pearl seemed to try to get her to talk about things she had purposefully skipped, a bit of bright red coming to her cheeks as her thoughts again whirled back to that day, a day she spent with a gem she was now at odds with. Padparadscha was relieved when the pearl began to speak more about the helmets, and music, and her curiosity was piqued as the pearl finally spoke about the Zircon-- close, but no dice, as the gem decided not to open up about that particular subject.
The sapphire deflated a bit, shoulders hunching slightly as she tried to think of a way to figure out what had happened with this Zircon, and why the pearl was free-ranging the moonbase now. After a short moment's thought, she came to the conclusion that she would open up just a little, in hopes that the other gem would do the same. "Oh! Well, the humans of Empire City were holding this bizarre ritual, all of them seemed to gather at the center of the city, and they talked of some sort of sacred new year's eve that they had gathered to worship. I was there, uh...for a mission, of course, with my own pearl, and..." The further she spoke, the more she recalled one of the most flippant and outrageous things she'd ever done, and the more red her face got,"Well, a human stood up in front of the rest and began to sing about this new years eve. I took samples of it, but the audio isn't very clear," She shrugged, and smiled,"I agree though, music is something special. We of the aristocracy often get to enjoy it more than gems of humbler station. I have met some gems who think of it as nothing more than a frivolous distraction, and I'd say they lack an appreciation for finer things. "
Melody shivered when Padparadscha's face changed color. "I am sorry? Did I just say something wrong?" She didn't want to cross a line or lose Sapphire's trust... she thought that she was doing great for now. She thought there would be more playing music and less talking. Of course she didn't mind this, but there were some boundaries.
She shook her head. "City? Ritual? Worship? Sing? I am sorry, but what planet exactly are we talking about?" She asked, obviously confused "Humans are native to Earth, but... they are organic, they shouldn't be capable of understanding such concepts as... culture or art." She continued "I recorded many sounds made by organic creatures, but they are just sounds, they use it to comunicate, not to create music just for the sake of art. However, Ithink I might be able to help with this audio problem of yours."
"There are some gems that are not aware music exists." She added quietly. She noticed it was often the case on many colonies. Like Padparadscha said, it was considered as an distraction. Sad, but there was not much anyone could do about it.
The chatty sapphire had always found comfort in conversation; even in the darkest of times she could be seen turning to the nearest gem for some discussion about whatever was on her mind, and now was no exception. Her curiosity continued to propel her interest in the background of the pearl, but as Melody skirted around the topic again, her eyes flicked to the side. She shook her head nonchalantly to the question asked, to assure the pearl there was nothing she did in particular.
However, her attention was again garnered from the thoughts on her mind as the pearl began to speak on organic creatures. The sapphire leaned in, listening with a bit of a curl at the edge of her lips, and though it faded when she mentioned the fact that some gems weren't aware of music at all. Her brow raised at this, though she supposed to herself that it was a possibility; the sapphire herself had spent more time among Gemkind aristocrats and Earth creatures than she had the lower strata gems. "Well, I suppose the tasks of the lower strata gems are so foundational that they cannot devote time to the appreciation of music," She commented off offhandedly, then continued by tapping the bracelet on her wrist. It brought up a holoscreen, and she suddenly paused. Would she accidentally reveal something dangerous if she showed the data she had acquired? After a moment's hesitation, she decided to take the risk, and scrolled through her data logs until she selected the journal entry that would have housed all of the data she took down that day.
She flicked through, and selected one entry. The video popped up; first the screen showed Padparadscha's face, with a tall Clear Quartz looming behind her, and a crowd of humans surrounding them. The sapphire's heart skipped for a moment, but soon the screen turned to show glittering confetti fluttering through the air like rain, blown about with snowflakes. Enormous screens lined gigantic concrete buildings that reflected the dull light of the clouded sky in their dark windows. Sound boomed across the plaza, a cacophony of voices and erratic sounds blasting into each other, causing the audio to be muddled. Soon the camera came to be focused on a stage, where a small group pf humans stood with some sort of device in their hands, chatting back and forth with one another, but what was said couldn't be heard from where Padparadscha had recorded the video.
"That day I had set out to do more research on human kind. They are basal creatures, surely, but they do have a crude sort of culture," Padparadscha said matter of factly,"The poorly understood rituals I've captured are still being processed by the biological research center, but I believe it is some sort of dedication to the year, which is a measurment of time just like our cycles. They seem to worship time itself," She paused, tapping her chin for a moment,"Alongside that they had a myriad of strange decorations, flashing lights, shiny paper... well, you can see for yourself in the video. Still, the audio is so choppy,"
"Exactly." She just added. It was honestly sad to see how some gems didn't really interract with such a big part of every culture. But that is what Diamonds wanted, it had to be for the best of everyone. At least that is what Pearl was always trying to believe in. But she was getting older and it was getting harder to explain some flaws in her own society.
Pearl just started schocked at the video. Those weren't the humans she knew. They were suppose to be ugly, disgusting, brutal and primitive, or at least those are the only things she heard about them. She has only been on Earth once and it was in the sea spire and galaxy warp. Those places were obviously built far away from Human nests. Now she was looking at those creatures on the video and they didn't seem so bad. They even looked slightly similar to gem species.
Could it be? Words, but not simple words. She heard words that made sense, they sounded like something a Gem would say. However, only two gems were visible in the video. Melody couldn't belive what was happening. "Yes, the audio is a mess, it is full of different sounds that simply will never work together. But it shouldn't be hard to work with specific sounds." She said, still confused at what is going on. now she wanted to know what humans on stage were saying. It would confirm if humans really were capable of speaking the language Gems use as well.
She shrugged, but gave a genuine grin. "If only I had brought you along on the mission!" She chuckled, the lotus-pink curls that framed her face shifting just slightly. Though, now that she thought about it, this pearl could be a very valuable future team member during many different sorts of investigations, especially those on the Earth's surface-- if Padparadscha could ever get her away from her busy schedule on the Moonbase, which didn't seem likely now that things were getting more tense in the war and colonization effort. Her lips pressed for a moment while she thought. She would make a mental note of it.
After a short pause, the sapphire began to speak again,"Do you think any of this is salvageable then? It could certainly be helpful to the lab research team to have clearer audio. Perhaps something these humans are saying could be of use in understanding what this strange-- but massive-- gathering was really all about. I had to cut my investigation there short due to...complications," Her eyes flicked to the side for a moment, then drew back to the pearl as she pulled the holoscreen over for Melody to get a closer look at. "Some gems wonder why we even bother to understand organics like these humans, but it will pay to understand them when we move in for greater levels of colonization. Know the enemy, as it were," She added, with a somewhat grim overtone to her high pitched timbre.
Pearl just chuckled at her comment. She did like to explore, see new places, hear new sounds... but Earth was different. And she wasn't sure about leaving Euclase, the last time she left her master didn't end up well.
"Yes, of course. It might take a moment, you can't rush art." It seemed that Padparadscha was avoiding something, but Melody was more interested in the audio itself at the time. She took the holoscreen from Padparadscha analyzed it. "In that case I will gladly help out." She just quickly glanced at Sapphire, her eyes were mostly focused on the screen.
Melody placed the holoscreen on her knees and played the recording. Her gem once again started to emit gentle and comforting cream light. Pearl's eyes were closed as if it was suppose to help her concentrate. The video started out like before. Pearl soon raised her left hand and started to move her pointing finger in a circle like pattern clockwise when human audience started to cheer. This made them much quiter... Pearl then started to move the same hand up and down. This turned all of those different noises to be more like a single tune made out of simple sounds as if someone was composing a background music by poking different materials.
She soon raised her right hand. The pointing finger on this hand was moving nearly the same way, but counter-clockwise. This made humans on stage a little bit louder, but the still sounded muddled. She wanted to do something about it, but the video ended. She opened her eyes and her gem stopped glowing "I think I figured this out, I will need another try."
Cream repeated everything from the beggining, but this time she was more aware of what she is supposed to do, she was much faster. Her fingers moved as if she was a conductor responsible of leading other musicians. When it was time to make humans on stage more salvageable she opened her right hand and moved in a zig-zag like pattern. The audio was still not perfect, but it was easy this time to understand what those humans on stage were saying.
Padparadscha watched with some fascination as Melody used her power. She leaned forward, eyes following the motions of Melody's hands, brows floating up on her expression as she tried to decode what was happening to her video footage. For a moment she thought it was over, but then the pearl spoke up, and Paddy settled back as she patiently watched the video's audio morph into something more comprehensible. When she could almost hear what the people on the stage were saying, Padparadscha shifted in her seat impatiently; it had been months since she had acquired that evidence, but very little had been extracted from it. Now that the audio had been recomposed by Melody, the sapphire's eyes seemed to gleam with new inspiration.
"Ah!" She breathed, with the video returned to her possession, she played it back again. The people on the stage gave each other white smiles as they discussed something, which she didn't really have the context to understand; something about the "New Year", a ball, something called fireworks which made Padparadscha think of military endeavors. Her lack of context didn't help her, but the fact that she could make out what they were saying with more precision filled her with inspiration. The sapphire stood up out of her seat, "Amazing! So much new data can be distilled from this! I'll have it sent to the--" She was talking so fast her words almost tripped over themselves. She paused, and looked at Melody with a brimming smile,"Thank you, Melody, I'll be sure to put in a good word for you at any chance I get. You've been extremely helpful!"
Pearl just watched how excited Padparadscha was. It was nice to make other gems happy... and it has been a while since the last time she used to play with sounds like that, she was usually limited to just recording and replaying specific tracks. The power started to become less desirable the moment wailing stones started to become overshadowed by holographic projections. With more advanced technology there was usually no need for correction from her. But at this moment she thought that a simple machine will never replace a gem made for specific job.
It felt almost exciting. Pearl never imagined herself helping in such a way, it seemed that the Moon Base was full of suprises and new opportunities. Maybe, just maybe, there was reason she ended up in this place. Melody never believed in "destiny", but it felt nice to think that there is something bigger awaiting her. And who knows, maybe meeting this Sapphire would in a way change her life, just like how Pink Diamond gave her a new home.
"I am glad i was able to help." She said honestly with a small smile painted on her face "It is not every day I face something so... extraoridinary yet something so enjoyable. I suppose sound is my element afterall. Contact me about any audio releated problems and I am sure I will try my best."
Padparadscha gave a nod as a opalescent smile dawned over her expression, eyes sparkling. "Excellent!" She exclaimed, "I'm glad we enjoyed each other's company, and for the help of course," the potential revelation of new insights was enough to have the investigator brimming with excitement. She had long considered the humans to be a largely untapped source of information about the rebellion. After all, many of the rebels she had met were in direct collaboration with humans. "I'm going to take this to get processed right away. I'll be sure to contact you again soon, Pearl," She gave a farewell wave, and rushed for the door. Her high heeled shoes clacked through the medical facility, and out into the corridor as she sped toward her office.
Despite her excitement, she still had the patience to look back on the moment she spent in the relaxation room. Her own Pink Pearl was one of her closest comrades, and the sapphire had always found pearls to be amiable, friendly, but there were few that she got to know long enough to consider a true friend. She hoped that this pearl, belonging to the moonbase itself, would prove to be a withstanding comrade in the coming days of war.

This Roleplay is a prequel to Steven Universe to an extent with some slight retconing and its own progression to the story that will turn out differently to how stuff plays out in the show. Thanks to the message by Rose Quartz several gems are rising up to protect Earth and have labelled themselves as the Crystal Gems. Others on earth are remaining aligned to Homeworld though despite the isolation of Earth from Homeworld
All gems on earth are still stranded, the communication hub is still offline and all the space warps are shattered, it has now been revealed that this is the work of Rose Quartz and her small group known as the Crystal gems. They have rebelled against Homeworld and have chosen to protect the Earth (Trapping themselves on Homeworld to keep the warps down).
Now both sides are fighting among themselves along with fighting against the 'Corruption' a virus is infecting many gems turning most of them into mindless monsters, but those with a stronger will seem to becoming something more sinister.
The Game has changed now. The question has finally been posed, are you against Homeworld or allied with them. Or do you have your own agenda that may or may not been assisted by the ‘Corruption’. Regardless the seeds have been placed down and although it is only the beginning the fight for or against Earth and the corruption has begun. The choice is yours for how it is shaped on the Original Steven Universe Roleplay Site.
