It was dark inside and out. Onyx could feel the cool night air and the ocean spray on his face as he looked over the beach. The stars twinkled softly in the sky inviting the lonely gem back to happier days. He could remember laying on a blanket and looking up at this same sky with the love of his life. A long sigh escaped his lips as he looked down at the photo of her that he kept in a golden locket. "I miss you Maddie. It's been so hard without you here with me, but I swear that I'll make everything right. I swear it." With a snap of the locket and a rustle of the tattered cloak he wore to disguise himself, Onyx was up, looking over the beach in search of his newest prey.
Onyx knew full well what hunting other gems was doing to him, but after losing Madeline he didn't care how corrupt he had to become to make Earth safe. Gems and humans just weren't meant to inhabit the same planet. Gems were so powerful and humans so fragile. It was as if a herd of bulls were trying to take up residence in the largest china shop you could imagine. Sure, most gems didn't want any sort of harm to befall humanity, but accidents always happen. Brittle bones break at a single unrestrained touch, weak structures collapse at any sign of anger, lives are lost in the collateral damages of everyday fights. Such a waste. Such a shame. Such an unnecessary evil. That was what Onyx fought against; the needless destruction of humanity on earth. Granted, Onyx could find other ways to keep Earth safe from the gems that were too powerful for their own good, but with the spacewarp broken and not enough decent technology on the planet to make a way out, the only alternative seemed to be hunting down each and every gem on Earth.
The wind began to pick up over the dunes and Onyx lifted the hood of his dark cloak and began to make his way across the beach. It was time to begin his hunt; who would his next victim be he wondered.
