The sun dipped at the horizon after another gorgeous day, casting an orange glare across the calm waters of the ocean that reflected into a beautiful, soft light that spread all over the beachfront and the Crystal Temple. Regular beachgoing humans were packing away to return to town while the night owls and romantics were just getting started with their regularly scheduled shenanigans. Fishers set up camp on the shore and boardwalks, artists congregated together on the far end of the beach toward the "dry side" of town and lovers joined hands and walked the cooling sands or sat together watching the sunset, lost in each other's company.
Not many people went anywhere near the big stone temple run by the strange gem people that roamed the Earth, even these days, and tonight was a little innocent exception to the unspoken rule to not intrude on magical gem territory. A little wooden table had been set up with some chairs and two old human men were in the company of a gem slouching across from them with a can loosely held in her fingers. The old man seated directly across from her rubbed his chin in deep thought while his buddy looked on with amusement and his opponent simply gave him a classic glazed over look, almost mocking him. A bead of sweat trickled from his receding hairline and he gradually made his move.
He moved one of his Knights into position to hold her King where it was, wiping his forehead. They were playing Chess, and it was an uncomfortable stalemate where neither side had lost a piece and a single slip up could cost a snowball defeat.
