somewhere on a gem-controlled station
How she hated spacetravel. Pebble was glad when the cheap transporter arrived at the station. It wasn't a planet, but everything was better than being crammed in a small transporter with the others. When the ship arrived in the hangar and it's door opened, the gems inside stormed out quickly, lining up from tallest to shortest. Pebble was one of the last to leave the ship, walking slowly to her place in the line right between two rubys.
"here they come..." whispered the ruby next to her, referring to the strict-looking pearl who approached the gems, checking something on a screen before even taking a look at them.
After what felt like several hours, the pearl finally started assigning everyone. "Welcome, transport LG-873, to Station I-935. You'll be assigned to your jobs now."
A quite bored-looking gem, Pebble thought she looked like a Quartz, entered the room. The pearl resumed: "This is Yellow Quartz Facet B-678 Cut 97B3, she's our captain of the guard. All rubys follow her, you've been assigned to guard-duty."
The rubys left with the Quartz, when they were gone the pearl continued: "All Peridots report in the machine-room, you'll be assigned to fix the station's pressure-regulators. One of you will remain here for taking care of maintenance."
After the peridots left, there was only Pebble and a handful of Quartzes left.
The Quartzes were ordered to simply wait for a transport to take them on a combat-mission and the pearl turned around, about to leave.
Pebble was confused. "What about me?" she asked asked quickly, maintaining her overly neutral tone of voice.
The pearl turned around and raised an eyebrow. She totally forgot about this pebble, maybe because she had no idea where to assign her. According to what she had read this pebble was lazy, a bit mentally limited and not very trustworthy. There was no really suitable job left for her.
"Just... go make yourself useful." was the answer she got. Pebble rolled her eyes, this was always the worst kinda job, everyone would just unload their shitty work on her.
As Pebble walked the station idly, it didn't take long for a decorated lapislazuli to approach her. "You the Pebble for everything, right?" Pebble simply nodded, just staring at her. "We need someone to test the energy-fields of the containment cells. Just touch them, and when one doesn't zap you, report to me. Got it?"
"Couldn't find a more useless job, huh?" Pebble thought, but of course she just nodded again and went to the empty cellblock, powering up the energy-fields.
