Sulfur was a complicated gem, so complicated that he had given up trying to explain how he felt to other gems. Even though he had forsaken logic and morals, he still was plagued by waves of stress as a result from his actions. His addiction was what kept him going, but any shreds of a conscience he had left were nothing more than thorns in his side. Whenever he felt guilt, he never felt it enough to act on it, and even if he wanted it, he was in too deep. He couldn't resist his addiction, and so his conscience whipped him like a cruel overseer.
He only could retain his sanity through meditation, which he preferred to do atop the Sky Spire. Sitting in full lotus he tried taking deep breaths. While gems don't need to breathe, it was of much use to calm any being. He started twitching uncontrollably as he meditated. His mind kept returning to the torturous areas that he did not like to recall, turning his meditation into a counter-productive practice. The more he tried, the more frustrated and desperate he became. Eventually he could take it no more.
"GAAAAAAH! EMERAAAALD!" Sulfur yelled, dropping onto his knees. The noise was loud enough to cause all nearby birds to flock away. He clawed at the ground and at his face, as if trying to get something off of it. "EMERALD! LEAVE ME ALONE! LEAVE ME ALONE!" He shouted. His despair was derived from a memory that had turned into a hallucination. The hallucination, in the form of a female gem, was standing beside him. She placed her hand gently on his shoulder.

"Why do you always beat yourself up... you were dealt a bad hand in life... you had all you ever loved taken from you... " She said, in her quiet, soft spoken voice.
"If you were here... you would hate me for what I've done..."
"You are doing what is right, if I opposed you I would be wrong to do so... "
"I guess... You know Emerald, there is something I've been wanting to tell you... " But when he turned around, nobody was there. The wind was howling.
