"You are indeed correct. Then again Crystal gems aren't just a group. We challenged the power of mighty intergalactic empire just because it was right thing to do. We all did it for some reason, but our goals are the same - to save this unique planet from being destroyed..."
He said. It wasn't just any group after all. They were playing with fire without the numbers or technology to have a chance of victory. And yet they will keep on fighting. "Short stature... I can strangely relate. We, Sapphires, are short on purpose - so other gem wound underestimate us while negotiating... it can be annoying regardless..."
It was better to be short on purpose then being "defective" but the result was similar. Then again Sapphire himself was defective - his future sight was... twitchy... so far it worked only few times... "Yes it is most impressive indeed. This planet might be so beautiful if gems came to help, not to plunder... mankind could benefit greatly from our guidance, and the Empire could be enriched by human culture, art and phylosophy... but it seems like it wasn't meant to be..."
"It sure seems that way... It vexes me somewhat why they aren't showing any hesitation in destroying this world. But I suppose great is a powerful influence in any sort of decision."
He had experienced this firsthand, in fact this was one of the first things he had experienced upon attaining his freedom. The gems who had sold him to the gem he had once guarded, attempted quite unsuccessfully to hunt him down to bring him back to the one they had gotten so much money off of. His mind wandered between memories of his past, before briefly remembering telling Sapphire of his defectiveness. Which leads to him to remember the moment of his creation. The moment where he was brought into the world, and almost taken out of it. His mood immediately dropped this memory flooded through his mind. Almost instinctively, he walked closer to the edge of the floating island they found themselves on, and sat down, his feet dangling from the edge.
"They tried to shatter me...
He said in solemn tone. He didn't want to have to offload his issues onto someone else, but he felt that Sapphire would understand, he continued.
"All because I wasn't made to order... They wanted to destroy me. So, I do suppose the Earth isn't the only reason I joined this rebellion. Even since the day of my creation, everything even remotely related to homeworld has shown me nothing but cruelty and hatred. I suppose that it's only fair that we display the same towards them... Right?"
"I don't the Homeworld, our civilisation is glorious... unique in the whole Universe. We achieved much to be proud off... I just think our leader grew mad with power. They see all of us not as their people, but as tools to be used and discarded after we are of no use. And I believe that has to change, if we want to grow. Because right now our Empire grow in size... yet it grow smaller with every conquest..."
Sapphire was created to be an elite gem, but even he was just a tool. More useful and rarer then most, but still a tool. And that wasn't acceptable for him.
"And then came Earth... a planet where everyone is master of his or her destiny. You don't want to be a builder? Sure... then be whatever you want. You take your choices and then you live with them... same thing with us. We chose to became "rebels" and now we are living with that decision. We are free to make whatever decision we want. And I want that for all gems..."
A smile spread across Titanite's face upon hearing that. Freedom of choice was always something he considered admirable. Even when he followed orders, he did so begrudgingly. Being treated as property had always angered him, making the whole ideal of freedom of choice something he could only dream of.
"We share similar visions you and I. I've always hated it how everyone is given a purpose the instant they're made, they never get a choice in what they want to do. I've always felt bad for gems such as Pearls, they were always treated so poorly... Never given a second thought, always given away to the gems who paid the highest price."
Pearls weren't the only ones he felt bad for, in fact nearly every lower class gem, even including quartz soldiers, had his condolences. Although some upper class gems experienced the same thing, they at least had things such as respect and a comfortable life. Many others, including himself, had not had such a luxury. He had no ill will against Sapphire however, he understood the problems that riddled their society and decided to fight alongside the crystal gems.
"Y'know, I feel that this war isn't just going to be limited to the protection of earth. I don't know what it is, but I get the feeling that one day this is going to escalate far beyond the war it already is. It's just a hunch, but I'm sure others might feel the same way."
"I believe strongly, that change is coming. It is just the question of when... not if. Gem empire have to change, otherwise it will fall into a terrible civil war. A giant anarchy, when every planet will fight for itself... and in the end nobody will win, those few who will survive will be forgotten and the history of our people will be gone... forever."
He suddently felt silent, like he said more, than he wanted.
"That of course will happen only if we fail here, on Earth... and I don't intent to fail just yet. But that depends on us. You, me and our other friends, all of Crystal gems. We could change everything."
"The fate of gemkind does ride on the success of this rebellion doesn't it...? We'll have to do everything in our power to make sure we succeed, though against the might of Homeworld is not going to be easy for this rebellion to stand up against."
Titanite respected how insightful this Sapphire was, it was clear to him that they knew what would be best for the gem homeworld and gemkind as a whole, even if it meant defecting from the diamond he was made for. However, he remembered hearing rumours of Homeworld gems being stuck on earth, the thought made him rather uneasy and he felt he needed to quickly speak about it.
Speaking of homeworld, I've heard that there are numerous homeworld gems stuck on earth. I haven't seen any myself, but to be perfectly honest the idea... Well, frightens me just a little. I'm not as strong as I once was and I fear I won't be able to protect anybody if it comes to that."
Despite resenting being forced into a purpose upon his creation, he still carried a bodyguard mindset towards those he cared about, and as such was willing to do everything in his power to protect them.
"I am not sure, if this rebellion will solve everything. I am not arrogant enough to think, that we can change everything but it will certainly be a start. And even this small step forward seems next to impossible right now, that doesn't mean it isn't worth the effort though."
He was hopeful, but he knew better then most how powerful Homeworld exactly was. And even though their forces were spread across dozens of planets all across galaxies they could easily muster enough soldiers to overrun them. That would weaken their hold on other planets, which was a risk...
"Yes, indeed, there are many Homeworld gems on Earth. I met a lot of them, but not all of them would attack on sight. Some are quite reasonable... some are zalots beyond reason... I was actually fighting one of them some time ago and I managed to prevail with help of other Homeworld gem..."
"Huh, well it's nice to know that not all Homeworld gems are aggressive enough to attack on sight. Though, you do seem to be a gem of a higher standard, not to mention many homeworld gems may still see you as a loyalist. So it is a possibility that they may be less hostile towards you."
Titanite did technically already knew that there were numerous kind-hearted homeworld gems, he had met with many homeworld gems in his past, though most of which were of a higher class due to the nature of the gem he had been assigned to guard. It was at this moment why the name 'Sapphire' was so familiar to him, he was originally assigned to protect one. What a turn of events, the first crystal gem he finds himself having a conversation with just so happens to be of the same gem as the one he spent a lot of his early life protecting. It almost seemed as if this meeting was fated to be.
"You know something, the gem I was assigned to protect all those years ago was a Sapphire much like yourself. Although she wasn't a bad gem, she was well... A little eccentric to say the least."
He felt this way mostly due to how mysteriously she acted around others, he didn't actually see her that often due to his style of guarding being set at quite the distance, however he still respected her as well as other Sapphires for that matter, despite being aristocrats, they were still respectable gems in his mind.
"All of gems are still seeing me as a loyalist. That's actually my game - I move amongst them, listening... but there was one who could "smell rebels" whatever that meant. I had to teach him a lesson... unfortunately violence is the only response some times..."
Perhaps he might have use a help of one particular gem to even survive the fight, but that wasn't important detail right now. Then again he did most of the work, but he was very fortunate that they were fighting on water, where Sapphire had a distinctive advantage... "All of us Sapphires are quite eccentric... we have to be. You can't be completely normal, when you can look into future. Human would said that it's an occupation hazard I believe... but no two Sapphires are the same of course..."
If Sapphire acted among Crystal gems the same way he acted among other gems he would be probably considered eccentric as well...
Titanite never took Sapphire to be the type to eventually resort to violence, however that being said everybody is prone to fighting back at some stages, some just resort to violence earlier than others.
"Well you were right in 'teaching them a lesson.' Couldn't have them finding you out now could you?"
On the other hand, Titanite wasn't exactly surprised about Sapphire still being seen as a homeworld loyalist. From what he assumed, Sapphire didn't make his affiliation to the Crystal Gems well known to many. This seemed like quite the advantage, having almost a sort of immunity to homeworld persecution so long as he maintained the ruse.
Titanite nodded in agreement upon hearing the idea that a Sapphire's future vision would in a sense add to the eccentricity of said Sapphires.
"I guess you're right. Being able to see the future would be pretty unusual, I can imagine it'd be pretty weird."
"I am much more useful to our cause if I can move freely among "loyal" gems. If words get out that I am a rebel it would complicate things. There are not many Sapphires on Earth right now, to be more specific I know of no other right now."
"Fortunately the gem that attacked me was crazy enough for others to believe she was just that - insane. Most gems couldn't wrapped his mind around the idea, that Sapphire could turn rebel..."
In his opinion the danger was quite minimal. Even if she told anyone, nobody would believe her.
"I give you an example - on Blue Diamond's court there was a fellow sapphire. One day she had a vision, that she will cause the destruction of one of Blue Diamond's relics. She was trying to avoid this so hard, that she stopped visiting thee room with the relic completely... when I left Homeworld, the relic was still undamaged... but she still avoided the room like a plague... I can see how someone could see that as eccentric..."
Titanite looked quite surprised at the nature of this incident, a Sapphire's future vision had led them to do something as dire as completely avoiding a room at all costs. He'd never remembered the Sapphire he guarded doing anything like that, but she was a touch odd nonetheless.
"Well I suppose future vision used in tandem with some insane loyalty to a diamond could lead one to do such a thing."
Although he didn't at all respect the diamonds, he could understand why others would be undyingly loyal to them. After all, they were often created for said diamond. Either way, Sapphire made a good point.
"You know something, I've heard from all sorts of people about the 'glory' of the diamonds, but never once have I seen one. Are they really as flawless as the homeworld loyalists are making them out to be?"
He figured that Sapphire's opinion on them might be a little biased, seeing as he had joined the rebellion on the whim of a vision. However, he was still curious to hear his opinion.
This was just one of the many crazy stories he had. Sapphires were a strange bunch of gems, perhaps more strange then most of the other gems....
"Yes indeed, and even to... stranger things..."
He smiled, surprising even himself by that. There were times on Homeworld he remembered fondly. Talking to his fellow Sapphires could be very enlightening at times... even hilarious, hard as it might be to believe...
"No... Diamonds are great beings... extremely wise and experienced. It is true that they are better then us... in that they are smarter, stronger and wiser... but they are also arrogant. They have their mistakes, as every other gems... so no, they are not flawless... far from it. You can see their greatest flaw here... on Earth. Bunch of gem refused to listen to them... and so they will try to wipe us out... because they're petty..."
He said. Sapphires were inteligent gems... mostly. Most of them knew the faults of Diamonds, but they also recognized, that Diamonds are superrior to them. Sapphires were not blindly loyal as most gems, they were simply loyal. Most of them...
Titanite nodded as Sapphire finished his explanation and to his surprise, his predictions had lined up quite closely with Sapphire's explanation, he knew that even with great power, there always lies a fatal flaw. It would seem the diamond's fatal flaws were aligned with their arrogant natures or their hubris. He couldn't help but smile a little upon the mere suggestion of being 'wiped out'
"Well whatever these diamonds try to do to eliminate the Crystal Gems, we certainly won't be destroyed so easily. Although they definitely outnumber us, I've heard tales of a technique that even trained homeworld soldiers have found themselves unable to defeat. Something that sets the Crystal Gems well apart from Homeworld's soldiers. ...Fusion."
Fusion was something he'd never seen before, though he'd heard from other gems in the past that it was 'forbidden' and 'taboo' he didn't care. Even when he was loyal to homeworld, he more than anything wanted to experience it. He knew it wasn't bound to happen for a long time, he wasn't particularly close with anyone let alone actually knowing anyone in the first place.
"I'm sure there's a lot of gems in the rebellion that've mastered this technique. It's... Intriguing. Something as intimate as fusion is can be a gem's strongest weapon. With any luck I'll end up meeting somebody to share that experience with"
"They will try to wipe ous out... that is only the matter of time... but will they succeed? I have no idea... but as you said, we're certinaly not going to make it easy."
Sapphire knew, that Crystal gems were a powerful force in they own right, but it was hard to imagine winning against such force as the Homeworld was... but there was hope, there was always a hope...
"Well... the fusion... fusion is used on Homeworld... but I ever saw Rubies using it. When several rubies fused together, they form a bigger, more powerful ruby... the fusion between two different different gems is where it get's interesting. It is forbidden on Homeworld, shunned as something unnatural... but I suspect it's mostly because two gems fusing makes them... powerful... perhaps powerful enough for them to think they could challenge the Diamond's power..."
"Though some Diamonds... experimented with it as I heard... there are some loyal fusions on Earth... or so I heard..."
