As suddenly as he'd began running, Titanite had stopped, standing deadly still for a moment, before responding to both Aqua's, and Sulfur's questions, not turning to face them however, rather keeping his eyes forwards.
"I believe we're very close by it. It's in this next clearing, assuming my ESP isn't lying to me."
As he said this, he took a couple of steps forward, traipsing through the shrubbery until it was within view. A massive, lumbering, corrupted gem with the physical appearance of a massive bear, it's back covered in sharp spines and it's claws obscenely long. It was imposing indeed, however it had not noticed the three yet, Titanite turned to the two accompanying him, assuming they saw the corruption lurking in the clearing.
"I don't want to take any risks with this thing, so we'll have to coordinate our attacks. Now I'm not entirely sure about either of your fighting styles, so do either of you have any ideas?"
Titanite was never really a good leader, he spent a lot of his past following orders, though he never liked the prospect. Although he hated to admit it, he worked best alone. But this time, he had gems to assist him, so he had to come up with a plan quickly, hopefully the pair would give him a bit of a helping hand.
They had stopped, and luckily Aqua Star had recovered. When Titanite told her and Sulfur about the corrupted Gem's location, Star had to take a deep breath to calm herself. This was it. Her first experience with corruption. She had sensed possible corruption in the future of a Gem once, but she had never witnessed corruption face to face. She followed Titanite into the foliage, walking delicately on her toes so she wouldn't make any sudden noises. Then she saw it. Her silver eyes widened as they locked onto the first corrupted Gem she had ever seen. "Oh my stars..." she whispered. Titanite had asked her and Sulfur about their fighting styles, so she forced herself to look away from the monster. "I can adapt my kusarigama for far or close range fighting," she said quietly. "Whatever you see fit is fine."
Sulfur stood in the air and rubbed his chin. He seemed bored as he looked at the monster. He then turned toward his comrades.
"My Style is... hard to explain. I usually tend to stick to my twin blades. If you need a ranged attack I could work with that... but this thing would be quite easy to deal with using melee attacks..." Sulfur said, pulling a green sword from his gem and twirling it in his fingers skillfully. He caught it backwards, a unique method of holding a blade. He did the same with a second blade. "I think that if I finished this too quickly you two would not get much action... I will block it's attacks, you two can defeat it. You did come looking for it after all."
After listening to what both gems had to say, he thought for a moment, and then a plan clicked together in his head. He wasted no time in conveying it.
"Alright Sulfur, if you're good with blocking it's attacks, then we'll get you to draw it's attention and if you can try to lead it a bit off to the left. When you've successfully done that, Aqua and I can strike it from behind, hopefully that'll damage it enough to make the rest of the battle easier. So basically, Sulfur, try your best to keep it's attention on you. And Aqua, try to attack in unison with me for maximum effect. Agreed?"
After saying this he slowly looked back and forth between the two to see if they were on board with this plan. He certainly hoped this would succeed, he'd never really approached any corruptions with a plan of attack and that usually dragged out the fights much longer than they needed to be. He wanted more than anything for this to go smoothly.
Aqua Star listened carefully to Titanite’s plan. It seemed to make sense, except for Sulfur offering to let her and Titanite take care of most of the fighting. Wouldn’t it have made more sense to finish the corrupted Gem as quickly as possible? She ignored this and looked at the bright side, which was that she would have more time to learn about corruption. She chuckled to herself. Here she was, her only concern being for research, when it was supposed to be about helping Titanite. Aqua Star wondered if she had been as selfish in her past life. “Don’t think about it…” she whispered to herself, then cleared her throat. If this was to be a close battle, a chain scythe simply would not do. Her gem glowed as the chain vanished, leaving only the handle. "Shall we?"
"Alright that should be simple enough... don't get yourselves impaled. I believe that I`ll be able to block any attacks that are melee, however it's spines may be detachable. I would recommend caution and preparations to dodge ranged spine attacks."
Sulfur hovered to the beast and stopped in front of it. The huge monster turned toward Sulfur and let out a low Grunt. Swinging it's claws Sulfur darted backward. Every claw strike that the beast made Sulfur calculated and moved backward accordingly. He wasn't even using his blades for a while. Eventually, the beast lunged at him. He darted to the right and the beast with surprisingly good reflexes, swung it's clawed arm. Sulfur tilted his wrist, blocking the attack with his sword, displaying little effort.
Titanite watched carefully as Sulfur effortlessly evaded the corruptions strikes. Paying close attention as to how it moved and attacked. After a short moment, he turned to Aqua and nodded.
"Aqua, with me. We strike this thing now!"
As he says this he leaps out of the underbrush and summons his Wakizashi, standing close behind the beast and slashing at it's back and back legs. However, the corrupted monstrosity wasn't paying much mind to this and continued to angrily swing at Sulfur, utilising both of its arms to try and claw him to pieces. As this was happening, Titanite was continually striking it from behind, turning towards Aqua for a moment.
"C'mon! Give me a hand!"
With these two gems by his side, he felt more confident than he ever had in the past. He felt that this battle was going to end well, with any luck... Regardless, he maintained the speed of his onslaught as he continually striked at the corruption with short and swift strikes.
Aqua felt exhilarated as she entered the fray. It was her first encounter with corruption, and she was both nervous and excited, though she didn’t show it. Keeping as calm as usual, she studied Sulfur and the beast. It was hard to imagine that it had ever been a normal Gem. It was so… savage. She watched as Titanite began to attack it from behind, and when he called to her, she swiftly ran to his side, a chain forming out of her scythe and wrapping around the corrupted Gem’s hind legs. Jumping back onto the ground, she yanked hard on the chain, tripping the beast. It would at least slow it down enough to give her and Titanite a chance to get a few good hits in.
Sulfur watched the two fighting the beast. He was blocking most of it's attacks but when the two were trying to get some hits in he couldn't block all of them. They were obviously novice at fighting corruptions. Their reactions were far from his first reaction, but it was a common reaction no less. Sulfur enjoyed corruptions and viewed them as challenges that were fun to overcome. These two seemed afraid and disgusted by the beast.
Sulfur continued to block as he thought the creature was wearing down from his allies' attacks. He turned toward them and watched them fight, not even paying attention to the beast.
"I have one request. When we're done I want to have it's gem."
As Titanite coordinated his attacks against the beast alongside Aqua, he couldn't help but feel a looming sense of success coming up. However, as Sulfur asked to keep the corruptions gem, he felt a little hesitant. He didn't know what Sulfur was going to do with it, but he figured he might as well let him have it. Sulfur did decide to help him out after all.
"Alright, the gem's all yours once we've finished this."
As Titanite responded to his request, he noticed that Sulfur had apparently stopped paying attention to it and seeing as the beast was still quite angry with Sulfur, it tried to take this opportunity to strike him. In a brief moment of worry, not thinking that Sulfur would easily be able to block it, he concentrates for a moment, and creates a powerful whirlwind, throwing the monster off of its feet and violently tossing it around in the air. As this is happening, he shouts out to the two other gems.
"Attack it while it's caught in the whirlwind! It's weaknesses are exposed and it can't fight back!"
He hadn't used his Aerokinesis in such a way since he'd fought that Agate back at the Sea Spire. He knew he could probably maintain this for a while, but not for too long. He hope the two gems would absolutely ravage it while it was defenseless in the air, wincing as he maintained the concentration necessary to maintain the whirlwind.
Now Aqua Star had every reason to be suspicious. She had no idea who this Sulfur was or who he was aligned with, and he wanted to keep the beast’s gem? Something was definitely amiss. Aqua was forced to turn her mind back to the battle as the corrupted Gem attempted to attack Sulfur, but as she ran forward to stop it, a sudden gust of wind surrounded the beast, throwing it into the air. Aqua watched in silent shock, then, hearing Titanite’s order, jumped up to follow it. She summoned another chain scythe, then struck the corrupted Gem, cutting deep into its underbelly. Then she saw its gem. What did Sulfur want with it? What was his motive? Was he planning something? Aqua’s eyes narrowed. She wasn’t going to find out. Raising the blade of one of her scythes, she prepared to strike the monster’s gem.
Sulfur watched as the two reacted to his question. Titanite seemed to respond well, he didn't seem incredibly optimistic though. The other gem seemed to be in shock at Sulfur's question. While Titanite approved, this gem did not. He noticed as he fought that her eyes locked on the creature. She was going to make a move. If he wanted to do it himself he would have to beat her to the beast. As she prepared to strike the beast Sulfur made his move.
Sulfur flicked a blade in his wrist so that it's blunt edge was behind him. This was to block Aqua's scythe as he moved in her way. Leaping toward the beast and in front of Aqua he grabbed the gem with his hand. He dug his fingers deep under the gem as the creature howled in pain. He blocked any attack that would have been accidentally dealt to him by Aqua with his other blade.
Dropping to the ground, Sulfur looked at his prey in satisfaction. Raising the gem to the sky and holding it between his index finger and his thumb he let the sun shine through it, illuminating it. Suddenly, he threw the gem downward, toward the floor. As it fell he pierced it with his sword. The gem burst apart into shards. He had shattered it.
"Ah... that was a good catch." Sulfur said smiling at them. "Nice job you two."
Titanite maintained the power of his whirlwind as Aqua leapt upwards to follow up on his attack, however as Sulfur made his attack Titanite started to wonder what on earth Sulfur was going to do with the corruption's gem, he felt like he'd made a mistake letting him have it.
As Sulfur poofed the corruptions form, Titanite let out a sigh as he let go of the concentration maintaining the whirlwind, and smiled as he saw Sulfur holding the gem, only for it to turn to shock as he suddenly threw it to the ground and shatter it into pieces.
"Sulfur! What the hell was that for?!"
Although admittedly he used to shatter gems ruthlessly in the past, those days were behind him, especially when it came to corruptions. He felt that despite the fact that they looked and acted like wild animals, their conscious minds were still in there somewhere. ...There must have been a way to cure them.
"If I'd known you were going to shatter it I would've said otherwise..."
He muttered to himself as he ran forward and knelt down next to the shards of the corrupted gem. He analysed the jagged shards of what the corruption used to be and he slowly began to notice something incredibly familiar... From the apparent cut of the gem before it was shattered to the colouration, he jumped back in horror, taking steps back as he realised what this gem once was, tears slowly began to form in his eyes as he figured out that the gem that this corruption once was used to be very close to him. It was another Titanite.
He could barely speak, his mind was all over the place as he tried to comprehend what could have possibly happened for one of his brethren to become such a monster.
Aqua Star’s eyes widened as Sulfur jumped in front of her, blocking her attack. The scythe bounced against Sulfur’s blade, and Aqua was thrown to the ground. She watched as Sulfur destroyed the corrupted Gem’s physical form. She jumped up to take it from him, then froze as he struck the gem with his sword, shattering it. She had only been planning to damage the gem, not destroy it, but apparently Sulfur had a different plan. She stared, unable to move, even when Titanite yelled at Sulfur. She felt numb. She had never witnessed the death of another Gem. She snapped out of her stupor when Titanite approached the shards. He seemed to be shocked, and Aqua Star soon saw why. The color of the gem strongly matched that of Titanite. She stood up, walking over to him, then put her hand on his shoulder.
“I am sorry,” she whispered, then glared at Sulfur. “You are no Crystal Gem,” she spat. She summoned her kusarigama, turning to face him. “Only a Home World Gem will display such heartlessness!”
If this was going to turn into a fight, Aquamarine Star knew she had no chance of winning it. She knew that what she was doing was foolish, but she didn’t care. Perhaps it was hypocritical, for she was going to bring harm to the corrupted Titanite’s gem herself. But she would never kill. However, she might make an exception...
Sulfur's cheery expression quickly faded. He glared at Titanite scornfully.
"Nothing can be done for these monsters. We must rid them from the world so that they cannot break free and corrupt more of us. The corruption will come for you someday if you are too soft to fight it." Sulfur grunted. "A human poet once said: First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me. You need to act if you wish to survive."
He then turned to Aqua and grinned sinisterly.
"I never said that I was a crystal gem... but you just did. Insulting homeworld gems and saying that a crystal gem is superior to them? The truth is, most homeworld gems can't work up the courage to shatter a monster like that specimen." Sulfur cracked his knuckles. "That means... you're a crystal gem. I have made deals not to harm homeworld gems, but they said nothing about crystal gems like yourselves!"
