Titanite listened to sulfur's whole poetry spiel, and although what he was saying made sense, he still did not agree with shattering gems that might still be able to be helped. However, as he saw a fight ready to break out he stood forward, standing in front of Aqua in a protective manner, his face growing more serious as his old instincts began to take form.
"Don't even think about hurting her Sulfur. You got what you came for, so just get out of here. Nobody has to get hurt. Not over something as stupid as this."
He had the feeling that Sulfur wasn't going to listen to reason. But he knew full well that he was significantly stronger than the pair of them even if they were to fight together. So he knew a ready escape plan would serve him well. In case it was necessary, he quietly grabbed a hold of Aqua's hand, ready to launch them an obscene distance away with his Aerokinesis should Sulfur move in to attack.
Aqua lowered into a fighting stance. She had enough evidence to support the conclusion that this Gem was indeed aligned with Home World. Even if it was a fight she could not win, she hoped she could at least buy Titanite enough time to flee and notify the Crystal Gems. “The Crystal Gems are more than superior,” Star said, a hint of pride in her voice. “We protect. You destroy. I have heard the whispers of the stars. The Crystal Gems will-” She stopped as Titanite stepped in front of her. What was this fool doing?! She was about to tell him to run, but stiffened when he grabbed her hand. She was unused to contact, and it showed as her face turned a darker shade of blue.
"Yeah yeah I get the whole 'hero and honor' concept of it. I however, do not care about this planet, so I only choose the strongest side that helps me stay alive. That side is homeworld, therefore I cannot attack them. You crystal gems are all I have left to hunt!" Sulfur looked at them with a smirk. "Don't get me wrong, I am no brute, but a gem of business. Now if I am to give you something, let's say freedom, You'd need to make it up to me."
He gestured to the area around them.
"Not that I need your help, but if you help me collect five more corrupted gems you will have been more useful to me than not." he said. "Then, I will let you go. If not, well... I`ll simply shatter the two of you instead of the monsters."
Titanite's eyes narrowed upon Sulfur's obscene request. Five other corruptions? Not in this area that's for sure. This wasn't going to end well, he needed to leave and he needed to do it now, however just running wasn't going to do it. He wasn't sure if whether or not Aqua was light enough to be carried away with enough force to take them to the rather distant warp pad, but it was worth a shot. He needed a brief distraction however.
"Five more corruptions? And you want each and every one of them from the surrounding area? I suppose it's possible, but we'd be here for a very long time. Shouldn't we split up to cover more ground? ...Ah who am I kidding."
This wasn't going to work as any sort of distraction. He was always a bad liar, so he figured an escape was necessary right now. He turned and looked Aqua in the eyes.
"Hold on tight."
As he said this, he unleashed an immensely powerful gust of wind around both him and Aqua, propelling them the weirdly long distance they'd strayed from the warp pad while also letting out enough outwards force to blow down half of the nearby trees, and with any luck it'd knock down Sulfur as well. Luckily for him, he managed to land the two on top of the warp pad with no apparent damage, but he was still quite spent from the whirlwind he'd generated earlier, and as such was completely spent from creating that very short, gale force wind. Falling to his knees on the warp pad unable to muster the strength to activate it.
Aqua... Activate the warp and take us somewhere... I don't care where, just do it... If you don't we're going to die at the hands of that freakshow... So please, just, do it."
He could barely even speak, his body, despite being composed of hardlight was refusing to move. He just hoped with every fibre of his being that Aqua would listen to him, for both their sakes.
Aqua Star had made a mistake. She had let her emotions get the best of her, and now it would cost her and Titanite their lives. This Gem was despicable. Selfish. Choosing an alignment only to benefit himself. She would have to fix this. Even if it meant the shattering of more corrupted Gems, she wasn’t going to make Titanite suffer for her own wrongdoing. However, it seemed that Titanite had a different plan, and that was to escape. She hesitated when he told her to hold onto him, but it was obvious she didn’t have much of a choice. She held onto him, then gasped in surprise as a gust of wind swept around them, clamping her eyes shut as it carried them to the warp pad. Titanite fell to to his knees.
“Titanite!” Aqua kneeled by him, putting a hand on his shoulder. “Worry not, I will get you to safety.”
Her gem glowed as she activated the warp pad, and they appeared on a small, secluded island. Aqua led Titanite to a cave mouth, where a blue light shone softly within. Inside was a small woven mat, and a few bubbles hovered in the air, containing the shards of an aqua-colored gemstone, very similar to Star’s. She looked at them fondly. "This is my place of residence," she said to Titanite. "Pardon the simplicity. I do not have guests often."
One would expect Sulfur to be angry after Titanite had tricked him, but Sulfur seemed Impressed. It was as if Sulfur thought Titanite was incapable of trickery before he had fled, and now had respect for the gem. Sulfur waited a good while as the gems escaped. He then hopped about a foot off of the ground and started to rapidly gain ground on the gems. As he neared them he pulled two blades from his gem.
Titanite collapsed, but he was near a warp pad. If Sulfur could get to them before the warp stream vanished then he would be able to cut them down. Titanite's gust had brought them far, and quickly too, but Sulfur was very fast and was nearly upon them. The second gem activated the warp. Sulfur's eyes widened as he approached, inches away from the gems. Then the warp stream vanished, he had only barely missed them. He chuckled under his breath and started to walk away.
As the warp pad beamed the pair to a location, Titanite sighed in relief. He was just incredibly glad to have gotten out of there alive. With a great struggle, he got himself to his feet, glancing around the place Aqua had brought them to. This is where she lived? It was simple, however it was certainly better than where Titanite lived. ...Which was nowhere.
"This is where you live...? I, like it. It's nice."
He took some further steps into the cave opening, it reminded him a little of how he used to live. The massive oak tree that used to be his home, he supposed the feeling of homeliness must've come from the natural feel of the place. He turned and looked at Aqua with a tired face.
"Aqua, thank you so much... You've got no idea how scared I was there. I'm glad to know I can rely on you."
As he finished speaking it would seem his legs have given out again, except this time he wasn't gonna fall on his knees, rather he was slowly, but surely going to fall on his face. Oh bother.
Aqua Star chuckled softly at Titanite’s compliment. He was the first person to ever see her abode, and it was nice to know that it was presentable. She was surprised when Titanite said that he felt he could rely on her. Those were words she had never heard. Star was a Gem who preferred to be alone, and even when she did help other Gems, they only gave her a simple “thank you” and went on their way. To hear those words, to know that she did something for a Gem to rely on her… Aqua’s thoughts were interrupted when Titanite began to fall. She ran to his side to catch him, then led him to the rug on the floor, making him sit. “How about I make us some tea?” She said with a gentle smile, then stood up to open a small stone cupboard in the cave wall. “In the meantime, you should rest.”
Titanite weakly held on to Aqua's side as she lead him over to the rug to rest upon. He figured at this point that overusing his abilities like that was a terrible idea, he'd never found himself this out of it after using his Aerokinesis like that, perhaps he was just out of practice. Regardless, he made himself comfortable and smiled weakly upon the suggestion of tea.
"Tea sounds great, thank you."
A thought crossed his mind. Although there were many types of gems he'd never heard of before, something about Aqua struck him as quite unusual. What really set this off was from one of the very first things he remembered her saying to him, that she sensed that he needed assistance. It reminded him somewhat of the abilities he knew Sapphires to regularly have, however he couldn't exactly be sure. He wanted to get to know this gem some more, so he sat up a little and spoke, feeling his strength returning to him very slowly.
"So Aqua, perhaps you could tell me a little about yourself? We never really had any time for formalities when we were out hunting for that corruption."
Aqua Star watched the tea leaves sit in the boiling water, then sighed.
“I suppose I should tell you about myself. After all, I did view your history when we first met. It’s only fair.”
She looked up at the aqua-colored shards in the bubbles above them.
“I have not always been Aquamarine Star,” she said, then gestured to the bubbles. “The remnants of my previous form is contained within these. I had apparently been shattered. But…” Her eyes sparkled as she gazed at the pieces. “The stars gave me a second chance. I was reborn, but at a cost.” She poured the tea into two glass cups and gave one to Titanite.
“I have no memory of who I once was. I can see the history and futures of others, but not my own.” She looked down, then laughed quietly, wiping her eyes.
“But enough about me. I was not able to see everything about you. Perhaps you would like to tell me more about yourself?”
Titanite felt the same mystified sort of feeling he'd felt when he'd first met Aqua. Never before had he heard of a gem being given a second chance at life, a reincarnation of sorts. He hadn't entirely noticed the shards before as he was in a bit of a daze when he first entered, but now that he realised that those shards were what she once was, it was a bit of a headache.
He chuckled a little upon hearing of her ability to read into the pasts and futures of others, wondering a little what she did end up seeing of him earlier, however he had not a clue.
"Well, I'm sure you've already seen a lot about me, but I'll just share what I would consider interesting."
He didn't want this to really drag on for too long, so he tried his best to summarise what he'd said next. ...Emphasis on tried.
"Well, to begin with I was made right here on earth as a part of a short lasting program to make some exclusive bodyguard gems. My brethren were all massive, strong and quite sociable, but as you can gather I was made defective. The only one in fact. ...They tried to shatter me, because I wasn't made right. I was forced to defend myself to prove that I wasn't as worthless as they thought I was. Basically long story short, I poofed the gems that'd been tasked with shattering me and they just put me in the same roster as the rest of my brethren. Eventually I was sold off to a Sapphire, while she was quite a kind gem, it wasn't exactly a satisfying life. I was disloyal towards homeworld from my very creation and wanted to just live amongst nature... And well, that's what I did. I spent a good five hundred years exploring every inch of the planets surface, until of course the Crystal Gem rebellion started. That's where I found my calling, to defend the world I treasured above all else."
He cringed a little as he realised that he'd just gone on a bit of a tangent talking about his past, however he was sure that Aqua wouldn't judge him or anything silly like that. ...He hoped so at the very least, she seemed like a kind and caring gem. A kind of gem he hadn't seen in a very, long time.
Aqua Star nodded occasionally as she listened to Titanite, sipping her tea quietly. She had seen his history correctly, but she was very interested in hearing all the extra details. She couldn’t help but smile as he completed his story. It was great to know that someone had the same passion that she did. She looked down at her empty cup, then sighed. “I have much to apologise for,” she said. “It is rare that I let my emotions get the best of me. I am still actually getting used to having emotions, but that is no excuse. It was my foolishness that put you in danger. And…” Aqua laughed softly. “I am sorry that I read your history without your permission. I have a habit of doing that to new Gems that I meet. I only do it to see their alignment.” She stood up and set her cup back into the cupboard. She would wash it later. Then she sat back down in front of Titanite, folding her hands neatly. “Are you feeling better?” She asked.
Titanite smiled weakly at her apology, though it was nice that she was apologising for letting her emotions get out of hand and reading his history, he didn't particularly think there was any need for an apology.
"No no, it's perfectly alright. What you did was right, and well, I wouldn't want you getting the wrong idea of me, so reading my history was perfectly fine!"
He chuckled a little as he said this. Even if any of those things had been a problem forgiving her would have been easy. Upon the question of whether or not he was feeling better, he wasn't entirely certain how he wanted to answer. Though he was certainly recovering.
"I'm feeling much better now. Though I think I'd like to rest here a while longer. I've had quite the hectic week and barely enough time to relax!"
He was lying quite a bit in that sentence. The only hectic thing he'd done was fight that corruption, he simply wanted to hang around with Aqua some more. Though, he wasn't sure his lie would go unnoticed as he wasn't certain her abilities could see such things.
Aqua Star felt strangely happy. She wasn’t quite used to interacting with other Gems, other than to help them, and even then she would just send them on their way without any further conversation. But she was grateful for a decent chat, and also for a simple break. She hadn’t been doing anything but assisting Gems and meditating, so it was nice to just relax.
“Well, if you are feeling better, would you like to see the island? It is quite beautiful, and there is wildlife here.”
As she said this, she heard a bird’s call from outside.
“Oh! A black capped chickadee!” She turned to Titanite. “Their call is lovely. If we’re lucky, I may be able to beckon it here.”
She stepped outside, then whistled. After a few calls and returns, a small white bird with a black head and bib flew towards the cave, landing daintily on Aqua’s finger, fluttering its grey wings.
“She’s a beautiful one, isn’t she?” Aqua Star said, stroking the chickadee’s head gently. She turned to Titanite. “Would you like to hold her?”
Titanite nodded upon hearing the suggestion of seeing the island. He'd always been fascinated by the nature on the Earth, so assuming he hadn't been to this island before he'd have a wonderful time exploring it. However, as the bird landed on Aqua's finger and he heard the request to hold it, he eagerly accepted. Out of all the animals on the earth, birds were without a doubt his favourite. He slowly reached out and watched as the small bird hopped onto his forearm, looking at it up and down.
"Wow... It's been ages since I've been up close with a bird like this before, are there a quite a few of these birds on this island?"
He asked curiously. He had fond memories with the birds he had befriended in his past days when he lived in his oak tree, listening to the songs they had to sing every morning and watching them on their day to day, relatively average bird lives. This only further increased his respect for Aqua, seeing as she apparently had quite a connection with the wildlife on this island.
