Aqua Star was delighted to see Titanite’s interest in the chickadee. She loved all the little things of Earth, and was glad to share such an interest.
“There are quite a few animals who reside on this island,” Aqua Star said. “There are hermit crabs by the beach, frogs by a muddy stream near the east, and, of course, the birds. There are chickadees, mockingbirds, and kingfishers.” She sighed happily. “I’ve become very fond of this place.”
Star looked at the bubbles that hovered near the ceiling. "I hope that my past self loved the earth as well as I do.”
She gazed at the shards for a second longer, then shook her head.
“Titanite. I must tell you something.” She looked at him with a serious expression. “There is a corrupted Gem that resides under this island. It’s growing, and I fear that it will consume my home.”
Titanite happily listened to her going on about the different types of wildlife residing on the island, however this train of thought was suddenly broken upon hearing of the corruption that resided under the island. He clambered to his feet, briefly almost falling over, but recovering and looking at Aqua with a slightly panicked expression.
"Well what're we still standing around for? Take me to it so we can stop it before it gets any stronger!"
He had seemingly forgotten how he'd just been completely physically exhausted upon the sudden apparent danger of the corruption lurking beneath the island. He didn't exactly get a chance to defeat the corruption he had tasked himself with eliminating prior, so he saw this as a chance to redeem himself for the past and dangerous encounter with Sulfur which had almost cost the two their lives.
"We didn't beat the corruption we fought just before, and because of that it was destroyed by some psychopath. If we don't deal with this corruption now, chances are it'll grow out of control, and eventually meet the same fate as the previous one. So please, take me to it so we can eliminate it."
He wasn't even thinking straight at this point. He wanted only to get rid of the corrupted gem that apparently lived beneath the island.
“No,” Aqua Star said firmly. “This is something that I must deal with alone. You are much too weak to fight. But…” she looked down, then back at Titanite. “If my gem gets damaged, or even shattered… I don’t want to die alone. You have been my first friend, Titanite. If I am wounded, I am trusting you to take care of my remains.”
She summoned her kusarigama, then walked towards the beach, smiling as she felt the cool water wash over her feet.
“If I die, Titanite, do not avenge me. You are to leave the island immediately, and notify the Crystal Gems of the corruption.”
She dived into the water, swimming beneath the island. Grabbing onto one of the stone pillars that anchored the island to the ocean floor, she looked around, her gem glowing so she could see in the darkness. A loud roar erupted from below, and a swarm of bubbles danced up from the source of it. Star heard a faint clicking sound, which became louder as the corrupted Gem crawled up one of the pillars. It had no eyes, only two hollow indentations. Its mouth opened as it screeched, revealing rows of needle-like teeth in its throat. Aqua Star pushed her feet off of the stone column, propelling herself towards the beast.
He yelled after her as she dove into the watery depths. Her words echoed in his mind, he was her first friend and from what she was saying it seemed she assumed that he'd be her last friend as well. He had no intention of taking care of her remains, because he was going to ensure there weren't going to be any remains. He refused to let her die like this. It infuriated him to even think that she was going to be hurt under his watch. As much as he hated to admit it, his old instincts still held very true. As he noticed the bubbles rose to the surface following the deep roar heard from the depths, a sudden wave of powerful emotion washed over him. Something that hadn't hit him for an incredibly long time. Anger. As this rose up within him he felt his energy return to him, and his control of the winds greatly heightened. He couldn't care about anything else at this moment, all he cared about was ripping the corruption from the water and cutting it down.
"Aqua! I REFUSE to let you die!!"
He shouted out to the ocean as he gathered a heavy concentration of wind around a point on the water where he'd seen the bubbles rise to the surface and within moments he'd created a vicious whirlwind and with an aggressive wave of his hand caused the whirlwind to extend downwards and rip through the waters surface, with the intention of pulling both Aqua and the Corruption out of the water and onto the land, where he knew he'd be most able to fight. He wasn't much of a swimmer, so why not take the fight to the land?
The beast shot towards Aqua Star like a bullet, its arms extending out to grab at her. She ducked out of the way, but not fast enough. The sharp end of its limb sliced into her arm, and she grunted, clapping her other hand to the wound. This gave the corrupted Gem the chance to strike her again, throwing her against one of the stone pillars. Her back smashed against it, and her physical form faltered.
“No… I can’t…” She whispered, her body glitching. “This place means too much to me!”
She clenched her jaw, then prepared to attack the beast. However, before she could do so, the water suddenly parted from above, and a strong gust of wind surrounded Star and the corruption, bringing them onto the beach. Aqua Star fell to her knees, then beat the ground with her fist before forcing herself to get up.
“Titanite…” She growled. “Get out of here! NOW!”
The beast shrieked, and its piercing cry shook the very island itself. She let out a sob of fury and anguish, then ran toward it, every part of her body aching. She lifted up her chain scythe, but the corrupted Gem threw itself at her, then swallowed her in one gulp.
It was dark. Very dark. Aqua Star struggled to move, but she couldn’t. She was too weak.
“No…” she whimpered. “Not again… I don’t want to die… Not like this…”
He grinned maliciously as both the corruption and Aqua were pulled from the water and onto the beach, however he halted a little as Aqua commanded him to leave. Did she seriously think he was going to turn around after all that she'd done for him? He wanted nothing more than to ensure her safety, whether or not it involved shattering this corruption. He let out a cry of anguish as the corrupted gem suddenly swallowed Aqua. Holding his hands out by his sides and compressing hefty amounts of air in locations around the Corruption to create a series of wind blades and though his ESP was incredibly hazy, he could still slightly make out a foreign figure within the corruptions gut, he knew where he needed to aim.
"Eat this you freakish scumbag!"
He yelled aggressively as he began launch the wind blades with the intent of ripping into the corrupted gems form and trying his hardest not to hit the hazy silhouette he sensed inside the corruption's gut, though he wasn't making any efforts not to hit it's gem. In fact, many of these wind blades were directed at it's gem. He couldn't care less if it poofed nor shattered, all that mattered to him was that Aqua was safe. And so he refused to let up this relentless assault until this corrupted abomination was gone for good.
Aqua Star's eyes suddenly opened as she felt movement, and she could faintly hear Titanite's voice. "No..." she mumbled. "Fool..." Then she heard the familiar rush of wind, and she was thrown against the wall of the beast's stomach. The attacks continued furiously, and Aqua curled into a ball as she was tossed around. She beat her fist down, tears forming in her eyes. "Why is this happening?!" She cried. "Why give me a second chance to live when I am going to die in such a way, just as I am feeling hope? I wish..." Her gem suddenly glowed, and she summoned her chain scythe. She sliced open the tough stomach wall, and she fell out of the monster. "I wish you never formed me!" She shouted, glaring at the sky. The corrupted Gem roared in anguish, already weakened by Titanite's attacks. Aqua Star angrily threw the blade of her scythe at it, and it poofed with a final shriek. She sighed, then fell to her knees, her weapon vanishing. "Why me?" She whispered. "I want to help other Gems... But I can't even help myself." She looked up at Titanite. "I'm sorry."
As Aqua burst forth from the corruption, Titanite laughed triumphantly, even more so when she eliminated its form. However, he realised the gravity of her words and he felt his control of the winds dying down and his ESP concentrating as his anger settled. Why was she feeling this way? He had felt similarly once before in his past, but realised during that time that his existence mattered, and he knew full well that the same applied for Aqua. He slowly walked towards Aqua and knelt down next to her.
"There's no need to apologise, Aqua. And well, not every gem can be helped. Even if you can't help yourself, things like these happen. I've felt the same thing too, feelings of regret from gems I couldn't help, not to mention times where I've almost lost my life because I wasn't able to help myself."
He held his head a little lower, a solemn tone carried in his voice as he spoke.
"We've all been made for a reason. We don't need to ever fulfil that reason, but we exist because of it nonetheless. Even if you couldn't help others, even yourself, you can't always help that. Sometimes we need others in our lives to make them better, and safer for those times where we can't help ourselves. So please, don't feel upset over this, I'm here for you."
Aqua Star listened to Titanite silently, tears still running down her face.
“You speak with much wisdom,” she murmured, then smiled. “I had never thought that I would ever need somebody other than myself… Thank you.”
She stood up shakily, then walked to the gem that was lying in the sand. She picked it up kissed it gently, then bubbled it.
“I suppose my shards will have company now,” she said with a small chuckle, then dusted off her dress. “So! Where were we? Ah, yes… I still have yet to show you the island!”
She walked into the small jungle, motioning for Titanite to follow. It was strange that she was leaving the previous events behind so quickly, but she didn’t want to dwell on it. Not at the moment, anyway.
As Aqua seemed to pull herself together, Titanite smiled happily, glad in knowing that she felt better after his last minute, improvised speech about purpose that barely convinced himself last time he recited it. Though, he was a bit confused as to how she just seemed to shrug off the events that had just occurred. He figured that she simply didn't want to dwell on it and followed Aqua into the small jungle before them, gazing around at the scenery around him.
"Wow... I remember being in an environment like this in the past, a lush jungle full to the brim of varied and interesting life..."
A wave of nostalgia washed over him as he observed the natural landscape around him, watching the animals scurry through the foliage and the leaves on the trees sway in the wind. Truly a wonderful sight to behold.
As they walked, Aqua Star felt strangely relaxed. She called birds to her hand, pointed out the shy foxes that watched them from the bushes, and told Titanite how to distinguish a blackbird from a starling. Then she felt an itch in her throat. She coughed, but it brought her no relief. Then she realized that it was coming from her gem. Corruption! Aqua thought, but then the gemstone glowed subtly. She touched it, puzzled, then an image flashed before her. She was at the Sea Spire, and a yellow Gem stood before her, a spinning ball in his hand. Star jolted with a gasp. "I must go! Right now!" She held her hand to her forehead, tears in her eyes, then looked at Titanite. "Oh! Forgive me, Titanite! I... I remember!"
(Is it cool if I leave the thread like this? I think it's a good time to progress with Star's story)
Titanite felt at ease. He always had around natural scapes such as this, but sharing the experience with a like-minded gem improved it all the more. However, as Aqua suddenly blurted out that she needed to go, he looked at her with a curious expression, seeing the tears in her eyes as well as taking not of how she 'remembered'. It would seem her past was coming back to her.
"Oh, you have to go? Wait, a memory of your past?! If that's the case, then you can go right ahead and leave. I understand how important this must be for you."
She was quite the unusual gem, it was odd having seen someone being reincarnated and not having any memories of their past life, quite an unusual combination. He nodded reassuringly to make sure she knew for a fact that he understood the gravity of the situation. Even if this meeting were to be cut short, something as important as this would have to take priority.
(Oh yeah dude it's no problem. The thread's been going on for ages now, so I'll probably end it with a post once you've taken off.)
Aqua Star couldn't believe it. It was happening. It was finally happening! She was remembering! But now she was left with more questions than ever before. Who was that yellow Gem in the vision? Was he friend or foe? And were those her final moments?
"Please pardon my abrupt departure," Star said with a laugh. "But this is no coincidence! Titanite!" She took his hands in hers, her eyes shining. "You have helped me greatly! I am forever in your debt!"
She hugged him tightly, then ran towards the direction of the warp pad. The birds in the trees seemed to sense her joy, for they sang wildly, and it sounded like they were cheering her on. Aqua Star jumped onto the warp. What an odd day. She had witnessed corruption and death, felt anger and fear, then joy and peace, and received her first memory. The more emotions she experienced, the closer she was to remembering. She looked up at the sky, and the stars gazed down at her silently.
"I will not forget you, Titanite!" She called, then activated the warp.
Titanite watched as Aqua Star rushed off to the Warp Pad in light of her sudden discovery. Blushing a little as she mentioned being forever in his debt. He felt wonderful, knowing that he'd made a difference in someone's life, a stark contrast to the things he'd done in his past. He lightly chuckled as he walked slowly over to the warp pad a short while after Aqua had already disappeared.
"I won't forget you either... Here's hoping we meet again."
He murmurs as he stands atop the warp, he would surely remember this day, and without a doubt would remember his friend Aqua. With a short moment of concentration he engages the warp pad and disappears into the following beam of light, off onto his next adventure wherever it may be.
