Ice was confused, he didn't know what an analogy was, but after what Sulfur said, he decided not to ask. "I was made a long time ago, I just haven't been to this part of Earth... that's sorta why I was out on a walk, I still need to learn this stuff."
Ice walked swiftly, keeping rather quiet as he focused on his mission. After a bit, Sulfur spoke again, questioning his allegiance to Homeworld. "Of course I'm allied with Homeworld, I could never turn on other gems." Ice stopped walking for a bit as a sudden question hit him. "Wait a second, are you allied with Homeworld?" Ice hadn't even considered the possibility until now, maybe that was why Sulfur was considered insane, from what he'd seen, Sulfur seemed pretty normal, apart from terrifying him when he first appeared, but now the thought passed Ice's mind. He wasn't sure what answer he'd get, and wasn't sure what he'd even do if Sulfur didn't answer yes.
"I see. You clearly have a lot to learn, walking around at night... You should go and ask a human for some advice!" Sulfur meant it as a joke, but then he started to consider. "Actually... that may be good for you."
Sulfur listened to the answer of his question. He winced and clenched his fists.
"You are? How unfortunate..." Sulfur grunted. He mumbled some other words under his breath but they were too quiet to be heard.
"Me?" Sulfur turned to Ice. "Well I am simply one who values his own life. I draw no distinction between the Crystal Gems and Homeworld. In my belief there is only power, power in the hands of one side. Don't burn unnecessary bridges, the stronger they are the more valuable they are. If you have to choose, choose power. Fortunately for you, anyone in this city who is with homeworld is protected by a certain Smoky Quartz. You are with homeworld, therefore under his protection. If not..."
Sulfur paused ominously. Due to a shapeshifting trick Sulfur's eyeballs became one solid black color as he spoke.
"You would be shards where you stand."
Sulfur laughed and patted Ice hard on the back. His eyes were normal now.
"I really shouldn't talk to the humans, it's not safe for them..." It was the one thing Ice hated the most about the city of empires, the number of people everywhere. So far he'd been able to avoid any of them touching him, but he still had to be wary of them at all times. One slip up and he could... freeze them in a rather unsafe manner.
Sulfur answered his question, and although Ice didn't completely understand everything he'd said, from what he could tell Sulfur wasn't a rebel, and that was all that mattered. However, everything seemed to freeze for a second as Sulfur said that last part. A chill ran down Ice's back, but it was different than the type he was used to. All he could do was let out a nervous laugh and change the subject. "Heh heh..." Ice wasn't a crystal gem, but Sulfur's words still bothered him.He glanced back at the building ready to move on and resume his journey. "Anyway, let's go get that mirror now, we're running out of time." Ice started to jog toward the building, his oversized scarf bobbing up and down as he made his way over.
"Very well, time is the most unrenewable recourse after all." Sulfur chuckled.
Sulfur walked into the store. As he walked his skin became the color of a Caucasian human's skin. His death would have seemed out of place but then again, many humans in the store had dyed their hair. It was a style for humans to do. Sulfur walked beside Ice. He looked around for a mirror. It was a rather large store.
"Maybe we could split up and search he store. You see how it's divided into categories? You should try to find a makeup department. I will do the same. These areas are known to sell hand mirrors. If you prefer a large mirror then look under 'furniture'. I have been on earth for many years, trust my judgement."
Ice's eyes widened as he took in the view of the store. "Was it this big on the outside?"
He walked over to a stand filled with various novels "What are these?" He pointed to a section with different birthday supplies and pinatas "And those!?" Behind it was a section filled with cards "And all of this?!" He looked around at all of the different sections of the store, completely overloaded with information, before walking back over to Sulfur. "Why is there so much random stuff in here, and why is everyone able to just take it??" Humans had always been confusing, but this was an entirely different case, the store was filled with the confusing human technology, rather than just one small thing that he didn't understand.
He nodded along with Sulfur's plan, although he was still left puzzled after hearing it. "Alright, just one quick question... What's a makeup?" He'd never felt so clueless in his life, and on top of it, there were humans in the store that he had to watch out for.
Sulfur grinned in amusement as he watched Ice's confusion. He then turned to Ice as he was asked a question.
"Oh, it's a bit complicated really, I'd recommend just looking for it. I wouldn't want to fill your brain with knowledge that you wouldn't be able to handle. Earth is an experience, experiences take time." Sulfur said, moving his hand as he spoke. It seemed that some humans and gems just had to move their hands as they spoke. Would they be mute if their arms were tied down? Most likely. Sulfur turned his back to Ice and started to walk down an aisle.
"Don't mess with any odd humans, try to find the makeup section, best of luck, ta ta, ciao, and cheerio!" Sulfur said, giving Ice a half wave.
Ice just watched as Sulfur left, partially crushed by how he avoided his questions.
After Sulfur disappeared into the store, Ice just started looking for the make up section. At first he had no clue what he was looking for, but after walking for a little ways, getting intrigued by every little thing in the store, he finally put it together. Saying it aloud, completely lit up when he'd figured it out. "Ohhhhhh! It's called a make up section because it's where you make it up to people!" He felt so silly for not getting it at first.
He wandered the store randomly at first, but then started to see a common pattern. The names above the sections were related to the areas below. All he had to do was find a sign that said make up, somewhere in the store.
While the store had humans, there weren't very many, likely due to the time of day. It was convenient, even though he could've asked them for directions.
He went back to where he started, reading the words on the signs above each section, hoping to find make up written on one of them. "Party Supply, Cards, Crafts, Books, Toys, Sports and Re Creation, Pharmacy, Cosmetics, Jewellery and Watches, Electronics, Movies, Video Games, Home, Office, Clothing, Grocery, Furniture..." There was no make up section, not that he could see anyway. Well... Sulfur had said something about mirrors in the furniture section, so he figured he could look there.
He entered the furniture section, slightly less overwhelmed by the objects that were kept there. He could actually see uses for most of the things, unlike the other stuff he'd seen. He walked through for a while before coming across a few reflective mirrors. They had an issue though. They were all too big. There was no way he'd be able to fit one into the storage capsule.
It had been quite a while, and he still hadn't had much in the way of luck. The make up section didn't exist, and the furniture section had mirrors that were too big. He walked over to a display bed, dropping to the ground beside it, and rolling underneath. Beds were nice, and he figured it would help him think of a new plan, even if he didn't have much to go with.
Sulfur walked through the aisles with a bored expression as if all of the humans around him had barely two synapses in their brains. He didn't know exactly what to look for as he thought that Ice would be able to find the mirror himself. He started to consider looking for it himself. His thoughts were quickly interrupted by a small human child tugging at his coat.
"Hey mister! Looking for something?" She asked with a big grin. Sulfur simply wanted her to leave. He viewed humans as objects. Using shapeshifting abilities he caused black slime to pour from his face. The slime formed arms which rubbed against the child's face. She screamed, and rightly so, as she fled at full speed. Sulfur then contorted his face back to normal. He turned to see the Cosmetics section. He then realized his mistake.
Ice stayed under the bed for just a few short minutes before poking his head out from under one side. He looked both ways to see if the coast was clear, and then rolled out sideways. He stood up and patted dust off of himself, quickly tugging on his scarf to check on the blue rose that he kept hidden there. Once he knew it was fine, he started running around the store to look for Sulfur.
He realised that given the current information, he wouldn't be able to find a mirror, but Sulfur on the other hand, knew all about the store, (probably). He darted around randomly, only slowing down to carefully pass by humans here and there. All the while, people were just staring at him briefly, and continuing their late night shopping.
Ice almost dodged some random yellow sign in the middle of the floor, barely getting by without knocking it over. He looked back at it, wondering why anyone would put it on the ground in the middle of the aisle. Suddenly, Ice slipped and fell on a thin coat of ice on the floor. This spot was very weird, it didn't make any sense. Yellow signs on the floor, and puddles... Ice slid, face on the floor, for a meter or so before coming to a stop. He laid there defeated, still on the ground.
Sulfur decided to find the mirror himself. Walking into the cosmetics section he turned up his nose at the excessive odor of perfume. As he walked through the aisle he covered his nose and mouth to prevent himself from inhaling the foul spray. A lady who was selling the perfume abruptly walked toward Sulfur. She unleashed a spray of perfume, right into his eyes. Clenching his fists so tightly that they shook, Sulfur tried to contain his anger.
Eventually he reached the end of the aisle and found a small mirror. Picking it up he examined it closely. It seemed perfect for Ice's needs. he then proceeded to look for Ice. Fearing that his search would take an eternity Sulfur gripped his hair in frustration. To his relief ice was in front of him, face down, on the floor. Sulfur picked Ice up by the hair.
Ice was overjoyed to hear that Sulfur found a mirror, it was even the right size. "Where'd you find it?" Ice was confused, he didn't see any make up sections, and the mirrors were too big in the furniture spot, so there was nowhere left for a mirror to be in the store. Either way he was just happy that they finally found one.
"Do we just take it, or..." Ice watched a person take a cart full of random stuff over to a checkout. "Do we go over there to take it out?" The store was still so confusing, it didn't make any sense to him. There was just some random place with random objects for unknown purposes, and humans would just come in to get stuff whenever they wanted.
"You see, the make up section sometimes has a different name. It can also be referred to as the cosmetics department." Sulfur said. "I simply went there and attempted to find a mirror of a similar design. I am sure that this can replace the one that you disposed of."
Sulfur then gestured toward the checkout counter.
"Humans use their paper currency to exchange items at markets. That structure is meant for this purpose." Sulfur said, explaining their next plan of action. He waved his hand as he described the process. "I... don't suppose that you have any human currency... I do not want to pay for your expenses, but if you have a shred of honor I trust that you will repay me."
Ice looked at Sulfur as if he was explaining one of the most complex processes in the entire solar system. He did understand the last part though, and figured that it was probably a good idea, even if Ice was unsure of how to pay Sulfur back. "I don't..."
Ice really didn't know how he could repay human money, but it didn't matter, he'd find a way later. "You'd really do that?" His eyes were full of gratitude, and his mouth was in a smile. "I will, don't worry, I don't go back on my word!" Ice was really happy, in just a few minutes, he'd be replacing the mirror and it would be just as it was before he had ruined it.
Sulfur's eyelids lowered as he heard Ice mention being broke.
"As expected." He sighed.
He then tilted his head slightly to respond.
"Why of course I would. In this world I will do anything that is of profit to me. Assuming that it would be difficult for you to repay me in money I will be taking a different kind of payment. After all, paying me the money I used to buy the mirror won't be of any profit, it will only even my balance..." Sulfur turned to Ice with a smile. "So you would be paying me with something intangible, a favor. Let's just suppose that you... owe me a favor."
Sulfur smiled briefly before walking to the checkout counter.
Ice thought it over a second time, briefly considering the possible consequences of making such a deal, before deciding to stick with it. "Okay." He already owed Chip big time, and now he owed this gem too, it was starting to pile up a little, even if Chip never did tell him that he had to pay him back.
Ice watched in awe as Sulfur exchanged some random scraps of paper for the mirror. He couldn't wrap his head around how exactly the process worked, but it was going to get the mirror that he needed to fix his mistake, so it didn't matter.
When Sulfur came back, with the mirror in a plastic bag, Ice was more than ready to go put it back into the can. His mission had a time constraint, and he had to make sure it was met.
Melody: how are you doing? Are you going to make a character in here?
