Mask island was a beautiful place. While not too large of an island, it was very unique compared to any other island on earth. Most of the reason behind this difference is due to the fact that it had been terraformed by Lapis Lazulis. The inhabitants had smiling, mask faces, these fish and sometimes birds were perhaps mutated by the water of the island. The Island itself was a canopy of green grass and shimmering water. The water sparkled as if it were made of jewels. The most notable feature about the island were the large crystal-like rocks that were scattered around.
The sounds of the ocean waves and the birds singing were broken by a soft singing voice.
"It's been so long...ooooh Emerald. How could I have been so wrong... ohhh Emerald. I've stopped chasing, I've started wasting... How could I change. I don't know what you'd think, but it's really so strange! -To be without you Emerald... ohhh Emerald... oh Emerald! Nooo..."
It seemed as if there was an instrumental blues tune in the background played by a radio.
"Oh you were so fine, back when you were mine... I can say that I'm wrong 'can't believe that you're gone.. I've been such a fool, but I know I'm not that cruel... I can't stop it, I can't change, I don't know how to change... Oh Emerald... Oh Emerald... Oh Emeraaaaald! Oh Emerald... oh Emerald Nooo..."
As the song finished a silhouette of a gem became visible on the beach.
Howlite had grown tired of Earth's bustling crowds and collosal cities. He missed the wilds. Then he heard of a remote island. They say it didn't even appear on human maps. The wildlife there should be perfect! And without humans he'd be all alone. No gems, no humans, just him and nature. Refining the pecking order just like the good old days. He landed his ship on the mysterious island. "Time to seek out the food chain. See who's on top." He made his way through the vast jungles with no luck. Suddenly he heard music from the distance. "Probably just my imagination. Not important." Then he resumed his search for wildlife.
Sulfur sat down on the beach with his legs in front of him. His feet were flat on the sand and his knees were at chest level. He had his arms around his knees as he watched the waves. Occasionally he could see a small fish, the mask island variant, in the water near his feet. Sometimes if the fish were too slow he would summon one of his blades and pierce it before it swam away. Not wanting to eat the fish he simply allowed to corpse to float back into the ocean.
After several hours he stood. The wind blew through his hair. He walked back toward a small campfire he had prepared. Gems had no need to regulate temperature, but the sea wind was giving him a chill. Sometimes he would come to cold places for the sole purpose of warming up. He rubbed his hands by the fire.
Howlite was rushing through the woods searching for some form of beast to kill. "Come on! I need something that's a challenge!" Eventually he made it to the beach and stopped in his tracks. "What is he doing here?" It was Sulfur. His partner. What would he be doing here? He walked over quietly then stood there next to him. "Something troubling you boss?" He then pulled a bottle of champagne from his hoodie. "Want any?" He then uncorked the bottle and stuck the cork in his pocket. This was gonna be good.
Sulfur sensed that someone was near him. Oh it's probably Fire Opal, here to take my soul or whatever he wants from me. He thought. Standing and summoning his blades he got prepared to fight. I like your style Fire Opal, but I will destroy you... Smoky Quartz can't save you NOW!
Turning around Sulfur noticed that it was only one of his allies, Howlite. Howlite was his craziest ally, but by no means a threat as he had taken a liking to Sulfur. Sulfur desummoned his blades, slightly disappointed that his expected opponent had not confronted him. He floated in the air near Howlite.
"Nothing at all Howlite..." Sulfur said, watching the waves. "Just reminiscing over my past in the form of song, that is all."
"I can understand that." He took a gulp from his champagne then wiped his mouth. "I came here to hunt big game. Who woulda thought I'd bump into you?" Howlite found it rather amusing. Sulfur was the only gem who he could relate to and his life got way more interesting when he met his new partner. Even though they were equals, Howlite always put Sulfur as the one in charge. That's where the boss thing comes from. Howlite saw Sulfur as the kinda gem who could see potential. "Well I haven't really found anything yet. If you wanna be alone I'll respect that. I'll just be on my way."
Sulfur was silent for a while. He seemed to be focused on something, yet zoned out at the same time. He waited until Howlite had finished speaking. Finally Sulfur opened his mouth.
"...Why hunt big game when you could be hunting corruptions?" Sulfur suggested after a long pause. "I only care about power, I only measure victory by it's challenge. I don't know what you think, but the only game I tend to hunt is the type that has a gem. My Smoky Quartz is fine with my habit as long as it is directed toward corruptions. I doubt that the beasts of this Island have little if any power. Just sitting here I effortlessly destroyed dozens of them."
"I have plenty of corruption on my ship. But the life of Earth? I have none except for a human. I believe I'd like to add a few heads to my collection. Besides... I'm sure we could find ourselves a corruption or two if you want one that badly. One second." He chugged down the last of his bottle. Then he tossed the empty bottle into the sea. "OK OK. I'm good. Let's get working!" He pumped his fist into the air and licked his lips. Hunting with Sulfur. There was nothing like it. When together.... They were unstoppable.
Howlite never ceased to confuse him, but Sulfur had to try to understand him. Howlite was going to be one of the Broken gems after all. Sulfur stood and sighed, attempting to answer the question.
"Well if you want wildlife you came to the wrong place. Here, this island, has already been terraformed by the lapis lazuli. Animals here are mutated and I suppose could not be considered pure specimen. If you want earth creatures you should look in areas untouched by gemkind." He said gesturing toward the water and crystals near them. "Personally I came here to relax, few corruptions to disturb me, not an ideal area for corruption hunting either I'm afraid."
Sulfur spun across the sand in a ballet-sort of way. As he spin his arm shot out and grabbed a rose between two fingers. He squeezed the rose with a look of malice on his face. The color drained from it, causing the flower to return to a green shade.
"If you aren't content with collecting mask creatures then this is not the place for you."
"I suppose I'll make due. Wanna accompany me? I understand if you wanna be alone." He then looked around for these mutated creatures. This could be a fun hunt. Sure they weren't native to Earth but at least they weren't corruptions. Occasionally Howlite grew tired of corruption. It was like eating the exact same meal every single day. Eventually you'd want something new before you go nuts. Where could they be. He decided not to use Tracker Vision. It would take all the fun out of it if he could instantly see them.
Sulfur sat back down into a crouch. He watched the waves, showing little emotion. He looked at Howlite with the corners of his eyes.
"I did come here for peace... if you insist the majority of animals are in the sea." Sulfur said, gesturing toward the ocean with his eyes. He raised his hand, causing a sword to float into the air. He then flicked his wrist and pierced a fish. Pulling his sword and the fish from the ocean it's odd smiling face was revealed. He gestured to it. "You see, this is the only game that can be found here, if you want to acquire some then I suppose your trip wasn't wasted. Some of these can get quite big, no difference for me but they are known to attack humans."
"Nah. I'll just sit here with you. Singing about our struggles?" He looked at the water and sang to a human song he knew. "The secret side of me. I never let you see. I keep it caged and I can't control it. So stay away from me. The beast is ugly. I feel the rage and I just can't hold it. It's scratching on the walls. In the closet and the halls. I keep it caged and I can't control it. Hiding under the bed. In my body in my head. Why won't somebody come and save me from this make it end? I feel it deep within! It's just beneath the skin! I must confess that I feel like a monster! I, I feel like a monster! I, I feel like a monster!"
"Struggles? Howlite when a fish is dead it is not struggling. I feel like death can occur in the body and mind. My mind is dead and my body is mourning it's loss. You could compare this to grief I suppose." Sulfur said, poetic as ever. He recognized the song that Howlite was singing. Unlike his usual self, this was not any use to cheer him up. He simply looked at Howlite crossly.
"Howlite, you are one of my affiliates but I would appreciate silence. I came here for that purpose." Sulfur said, resting his head on his knees. "Have you ever suffered a loss Howlite? I don't assume that you have... but I suppose if you did you would know how I feel."
Howlite smiled until Sulfur looked cross at him. Immediately his mood darkened. His smile became a frown. "Can't say I have. But I couldn't exactly lose anyone when no one thinks I should even exist could I? I may not have experienced what you have but I do understand suffering. I'll keep quiet." He then focused on the waves without saying a word. He felt horrible. He didn't wanna upset him. He merely wanted to lighten his mood. He decided it would be best to just remain silent until Sulfur said otherwise.
It seemed hypocritical, but Sulfur started to sing.
"You don't know what you got untiiil it's gone, And I found out a little too laaaate. I was acting as if you were lucky to have me Doin' you a favor, I hardly knew you were theeeeere. But then you were gone, and it all was wrong Had no idea how much I caaared! Now being without you takes a lot of getting uuused to! Should learn to live with it-but I don't waaaant to! Being without you is all a big mistaaake! Instead of getting easier- it's the hardest thing to taaaake! I'm addicted to you babe, you're a haaaard habit to break! "
Sulfur flopped back on the beach.
"I suppose I often smile to forget how I feel, that's why I shatter gems... because once a void is torn in your soul... you`ll do anything to fill it... anything that feels right."

This Roleplay is a prequel to Steven Universe to an extent with some slight retconing and its own progression to the story that will turn out differently to how stuff plays out in the show. Thanks to the message by Rose Quartz several gems are rising up to protect Earth and have labelled themselves as the Crystal Gems. Others on earth are remaining aligned to Homeworld though despite the isolation of Earth from Homeworld
All gems on earth are still stranded, the communication hub is still offline and all the space warps are shattered, it has now been revealed that this is the work of Rose Quartz and her small group known as the Crystal gems. They have rebelled against Homeworld and have chosen to protect the Earth (Trapping themselves on Homeworld to keep the warps down).
Now both sides are fighting among themselves along with fighting against the 'Corruption' a virus is infecting many gems turning most of them into mindless monsters, but those with a stronger will seem to becoming something more sinister.
The Game has changed now. The question has finally been posed, are you against Homeworld or allied with them. Or do you have your own agenda that may or may not been assisted by the ‘Corruption’. Regardless the seeds have been placed down and although it is only the beginning the fight for or against Earth and the corruption has begun. The choice is yours for how it is shaped on the Original Steven Universe Roleplay Site.
