Although this world looks exactly like your’s at first glance, look closely. All of the sea is land, and the land is yellow as well. If you look even closer then you’ll notice a shade of red all over the ocean.
If you thought that was odd, then pay even closer attention; this is where the fun begins. Humans don’t exist here, in fact they never existed at all. Instead there are waters, fires, and rocks, all coexisting together. They also have stubby arm and legs similar to us, not only that but they have faces just like us too, but they have no necks or hands or feet. There are also female counterparts to fires, rocks and waters: flares, minerals, and aqueousi. These inanimate objects rule the yellow, spongy land.
Even weirder is that no animals roam the land, they are merely used by these inanimate things as their inanimate resources. They are used to build skyscrapers that reach what we call heaven, and tunnels that reach the great beyond of their planet, Htrae.
Everything is different in this world, there are no laws or ideals to uphold. They live their lives working all the day long, they are treated like the inanimate objects they are based off of.
Before you sit back and relax, keep this in mind. Nothing makes sense.
In a local comedy club, the crowd laughed as a person stepped down from the stage. An announcer stepped up to the stage and said “Wow, what a great act!” His words were clearly uninspired and reeked of indifference. “And for our next performer is crowd favorite, Vampyre Currant!”
The crowd cheered. They were waiting all night for this person to act. They had all heard of this hilarious rookie comedian. He stepped to the stage, picked up his amplifier, and looked confidently at the audience in front of him.
Vampyre Currant was, for lack of better word, a ball of amber colored fire. But in this world, that was considered the norm.
“When I was a child” he explained “no one ever told me ‘do this’ or ‘do that’ I was always sort of... expected to do things.”
The crowd in front of him nodded in agreement, their fiery faces filled with anticipation.
“One day, I was walking leisurely through a forest,” he continued “when I saw a nice looking skunk, so I did the most sensible thing at the time… I sat on it.”
Some members of the crowd chuckled, one of them broke out in laughter and yelled “Fires aren’t supposed to do that, bad things would happen!” He looked at her and giggled, “and that’s exactly what happened. I set the entire forest on fire.” He said as the crowd laughed.
The musty air of the comedy club filled him with courage to continue.
“I was later punished for that. There were no real consequences though, which I found surprising.” He said with a tone of concern so slight only those who were paying attention to his performance noticed. Vampyre looked intently at the audience, this was his first month in the local comedy club, Auburn’s. He was always nervous when he performed; but he made sure to never show it. In his mind, showing nervousness always made for a bad performance.
He took a brief look around. Auburn’s was a very small bar on the edge of town, and as a result, few people went there. The chairs were old and made of rusted skin, and the livewood on the wall was beginning to peel off. The stage he was standing on would have caved in had there not been renovations a few weeks ago; but Vampyre loved his little shack in the middle of nowhere, as long as he got to do what he loved.
“Mrs. Toast said,” Vampyre tried to make an impression of his high school teacher, but it ended up sounding like himself with a high-pitched voice. “‘You better not do that again’ I giggled a little and responded ‘What would happen if I DID do it again?’ and she gave me this look… I never forgot that look.” He laughed as the memory of his teacher came back to him “It was like a combination of surprise and disgust, something like this.”
Vampyre tried to shaped his amber colored face to look like Mrs. Toast’s face. But he could not imitate it. He felt awkward and nervous again; he could picture her face vividly in his mind, but for some reason he could not make the same face; only she could make a face so disgusting.
“Well anyways” he continued “She just ran away and never talked to me again…” He looked at his watch, hoping it would be time to leave, ten minutes remained.
He tried to finish the joke, but being unable to make that face screwed up all of his intents. The audience began to look confused; they were expecting to see a funny act, not some stuttering fool.
Vampyre worried for his reputation, he was the most popular comedian in Flaresin.
As he stuttered in front of the audience, the door at the entrance opened, and in came a rock.
The rock was relatively small, not small enough to be considered a pebble, but not big enough to be a boulder. The rock looked curiously at the audience, and some members of the audience looked at him with surprise, Flaresin was mainly inhabited by fires.
Vampyre took notice of the rock and turned it into his own little joke “Mrs. Toast was dumb, but not as dumb as some of the rocks I’ve met throughout my life!”
The audience chuckled, and Vampyre was filled with courage once again.
The rock in the audience didn’t seem to mind that he was being made fun of. In fact, he seemed very intrigued as to what Vampyre would say next.
“One day I met one that just couldn’t stop talking!” Vampyre explained “I sat next to one in high school. I asked him how his day was, and to this day all I remember him saying is ‘blah blah blah blah blah blah!’”
He continued to crack jokes about rocks, how stiff they are, the fact that one could not shut them up. All sorts of insulting things about rocks. All in the name of comedy.
“And you have no idea how annoying those little pebble rocks are!” He yelled.
The audience was laughing out loud thanks to his performance. Vampyre looked at his watch, time to go. He had done it.
“Well, thank you for your time!” He said in relief “If it weren’t because of you I’d be homeless!”
The crowd laughed as he stepped off of the stage. But instead of going backstage, he went to the front door and left through there.
He wanted to apologize to the rock. He felt really bad for butchering the name of someone he didn’t even know. And it was an unwritten rule to apologize for mistakes you make, so it was a win-win.
He gestured for the rock to go outside, he took notice and followed along.
It was a unnaturally cool summer night. And the rock stood in front of him, waiting to hear what Vampyre had to say.
“Hey man…” Vampyre rubbed the back of his head, he felt really bad for what he had done. “I’m sorry for what I did back there… I was desperate and…”
“It’s okay! I’m used to that type of thing!”
Vampyre felt even worse than before. This was not the first time this had happened to this rock guy. He wanted to make it up to him somehow. After thinking of various ways to do so, he wondered what had happened to him before, and how he ended up in Auburn’s to begin with. He needed to get to know him.
“So...” Vampyre looked awkwardly at the rock, the rock looked back at him earnestly. “What’s… your name…?”
The rock smiled at him. It was the first time anyone had shown him compassion like that in a long time. “My name is Onyx Roll. I moved here about a year ago to work on construction around these parts.”
Vampyre did not ask him about why he came here, but he was glad that Onyx had clarified that. He moved on to his next question. “Why did you come to Auburn’s anyway?”
“To get a break.”
“You know full well what that is.”
The air of the conversation changed, Vampyre was confused as to why he would say that so blatantly. And Onyx was right, he did know what he was talking about. Vampyre looked at his surroundings, no one was nearby.
The cool night breeze made him shudder
After a minute of silence, he took a deep breath and said “We can’t talk here, follow me.”
He took off, but Onyx did not follow him.
“I said follow me…”
“Sorry, I need to get home, can we meet up some other time?” Onyx responded. He needed to get home to his wife and children.
“...I’d love to, but I don’t think that’s possible…” Vampyre was deeply concerned for his new acquaintance, but at the same time somewhat interested.
“When’s your next show?” Onyx asked, hoping to be able to set up a meeting.
“Tomorrow at MP 00:7”
“Good. I’ll meet you then.” Onyx turned around and left. Vampyre stood there, unsure of what to make of what had just happened.
Vampyre stood there in silence, without moving.
He turned the other way and walked back to his apartment.
There was another breeze in the dead of the night, and it sent a chill down his spine.
