Sulfur's manor was as gloomy as ever. The fifteen story high tower fit the description of a haunted house well. The fact that it was in the middle of a large wasteland didn't help to diminish the creepy factor. It seemed to always be raining, yet the wasteland was like a desert. Well, a desert with nothing but rock for miles upon miles. Due to trenches and uneven hills the land was hard to traverse. Sulfur had sent Howlite a message on his phone asking him to return to the Manor. His reasoning was left out of the manor.
In truth, Sulfur had captured a new gem. He was unsure of the gem's alignment, but their spirit and endurance were remarkable. However, unfortunately the gem was a bit too insane to be of any use. This was where Howlite came in. He loved to torture gems, but rarely got to torture one that was not corrupted. This gem, Variscite, had endurance, but not enough. She would crack mentally, if not physically, under Howlite's methods. Sulfur himself did not care for torture, his to-be knight found it as a hobby.
Sulfur was on the second floor, the torture room. He dropped his captive's gem on the floor in front of him. He crossed his arms as he waited for her to regenerate. It was a large floor full of many twisting staircases and odd looking contraptions full of spikes. A green light dimly lit the floor. The place bore a striking resemblance to one's mental image of hell.
Howlite had received a message on his phone. "It's from Sulfur. Sure why not?" He brought Mocha with him for some additional company. They approached the manor and Mocha looked confused. "This is where you live?" Howlite smirked. "Trust me it gets better. Wait till you meet the boss." He looked around for Sulfur and eventually found him in the torture room. Mocha looked around and asked Howlite "where are we? Is this hell?" Howlite smiled. "It's home. Hell would be more merciful." Then he saw Sulfur. "oh hey boss. What's up?"
Variscite's eyes opened at last. She saw what appeared to be the inside of a castle. Judging from the spicks protruding from walls and tendril-like chains hanging from the floor, Variscite supposed she was in a torture room. Although this one had higher class than those she had been imprisoned in before. 'So rich people like to torture too?' Variscite laughed to the point she thought she might burst, finding out only later she was screaming instead.
'So this is what trauma does to you?' Although she knew what was coming, Variscite was still afraid deep down inside herself. 'No. Be strong.' Variscite would play another game with her enemies. Yet, the gem wondered if it was the opponent from earlier who owned this castle. It did not matter. She didn't care.
Looking at his catch Sulfur maintained a straight face, a quite emotionless one. He had seen crazed gems before. Crazy was good to Sulfur, but only to an extend. If a gem is too crazy then they are useless.
Sulfur smiled as Howlite approached but his smile quickly faded. He was clearly looking at Mocha. He made a face of disgust and pointed toward her with a sword.
"It seems that you have a guest..." Sulfur said, approaching Mocha. "Tell me Howlite, why have you brought this one here... She is not one of us and I did not give your permission to bring her into my sanctuary."
Sulfur examined this thing that was with Howlite.
"You are my ally and are valued, but I did not accept this plan, or even hear about it." Sulfur said, seeming more disappointed than angry. "I would suggest you cut off ties with everyone, as relationships weaken you... but you seem to need them. In time you will become independent! Still, if you are going to have some sort of relationship, you should keep it away from our work!"
"I understand that boss, I really do. But hear me out for a second, you always say that relationships are weaknesses. Well that may be true for you but not to me. I'm not like you in that regard. Look I'll work it out later. What exactly did you want me to do?" Then he casted his eye upon a gem next to Sulfur. "Wait a minute.... Am I about to do what I think I'm about to do?" Mocha then looked around for a moment before speaking. "Look Howlite your boss has a problem with me, should I just wait outside?" Howlite had a slight frown. "Yeah you probably should. I'll get you when I'm finished." Then as Mocha left the room he looked back at the gem. "Hi my name's Howlite. You and I are gonna have a lot of fun."
Variscite stared down who she figured would be her new torturer, then gave a faint smile. They would have fun indeed. After being guided to where the torture would take place, she would search for some method of escaping. When the gem Howlite made a mistake, Variscite would make her move. This would probably take a few months, but if Variscite used what Howlite cared about most against him, primarily his personal hologram, she could ruin him to the point he ended his own life.
She figured this gem did not live to torture as her other masters had in the past, but if he were half as strong as his boss, blue gem would not be beaten by Variscite at her current rank. She needed to convince him to let her go or simply demoralize him to a point of no return.
"Relationships are not your strength Howlite. That was proven when you defeated that pearl. That decision was what made you strong." Sulfur said, looking at Mocha. "I will entertain this as you are my loyal ally. You can keep her, but I do not want to see her, she should not interfere with our affairs. I see that you trust her, but I have only just met her. I haven't gotten this far in life by not thinking through my actions. If she shows any sign of treachery I will not hesitate to destroy her. Watch her carefully Howlite. This is a test."
He then looked at Variscite as if she were something he had scraped off of the bottom of his shoe.
"Now Howlite, do your best." Sulfur said. "This gem attacked me for no reason in particular, but there are always reasons for everything in life. Her mental path is deep within her, you are an expert on torture, I ask that you try to squeeze the answers out. Enjoy yourself."
Howlite rolled his shoulders. "Give me about 30 minutes. Maybe less." He then grabbed the victim by the throat. "Before we start, I just hope you don't break too easily. I'd hate it if you didn't last long." He then dragged her over to what appeared to be 2 gears. "I came up with this from clocks." He picked some chains up off the floor. "Observe." He linked one end to the left gear. Then he started wrapping the center of the chain around the gem's neck. Then he linked the far end to the right gear. "Let's see if you can figure out what's about to happen."
Variscite stayed silent, it appeared two gears were going to stretch and pull at her neck, choking her. This seemed different from what she had endured in her past. Maybe the physical pain could make her forget how bad she really felt in this situation. Variscite was curious.
What mattered more to her than the fact that could not beat the other gem, no, could not even come close to it. Variscite wished for death so strongly, it tickled her gem. But she had to survive, for those she cared about most. She had to protect her allies and for that she needed to be strong. It was not time for Variscite to fade away, she was afraid of it. Maybe she could use these gems while they used her.
Sulfur was not a fan of torture, but he found himself quite immune. After many years of it he had learned to enjoy pain. It was only a signal to him that his body was being attacked. He did not become disturbed watching one be tortured as it had happened to him too much for him to feel empathy. Watching this gem become tortured he felt nothing. His real torture was watching the one gem he cared about become shattered. That was why he was fighting. That was why he wanted to stay alive. To avenge his loss.
He knelt beside Variscite to look into her eyes. He didn't get any enjoyment from her suffering. He just wanted answers he just wanted her to be useful.
"Boss don't waste your time." He pulled a lever and the gears began to slowly turn. He then went over and pulled a bludgeon off the wall and began to sing. "There are few who'd deny. At what I do I am the best, for my talents are renowned far and wide." He swung the bludgeon across her face. "With the slightest little effort of my demonic charms, I have brought the very toughest to their knees. With a swing of a blade and a nice tight chain, I have made Quartzes give out a shriek." Then he resumed his beating of the gem. Hitting in multiple places to get a reaction out of her.
Variscite figured her best option at the time would be to respond to the first gem. But what did he want her to say. It was not like she knew some sort of useful information. She did not even know who he was or what group he was from. The crystal gems, Homeworld, a separate organization, who knows. Variscite did not care. They were strong and that was what mattered most at the time. Perhaps they only wanted a way to pass the time? Not likely. If Variscite joined their organization she could train the way they trained. What was their secret? "Want to hear a knock-knock joke?" she offered while having her faced bruised and slightly dislocated by the second gem.
Sulfur's right eye twitched at the response. If he did not like watching torture before, he did now. He would ask her again, but he hadn't seen enough torture yet. If there was one thing that Sulfur valued it was respect. In this case, he was not being respected, but a gem at his mercy was still challenging him. If he felt that the gem was anything more than a lunatic he would have been civil and prevented his hatred from getting the best of him. In this case however, he felt no need to control himself.
"Give her everything you have Howlite..." Sulfur said. "I want to hear her scream."
Sulfur watched Variscite, looking into her eyes, trying to see the pain she was feeling through her eyes.
Howlite was having fun. Then Sulfur said make her scream. He then made a face of pure Malice. He went back into storage and came back with a large hook. He then sang a new song. "I wanna hold 'em like they do in Texas please. Fold 'em let 'em. Hit me. Raise the stakes and stay with me." He swung the hook across her nose and kept singing. "Luck and intuition, play with spades to start. And after you've been hooked I'll aim straight for your heart! I'll hit you hard. Show you what I got." He then put the hook against her chin and slashed upwards.
Their must have been acid sloshing around in Variscite's face. The hook had multilated her nose, mouth, forhead, and jaw. Variscite noted that 31% of her face had been torn off. Now this is more like it, the pain Father and the good teacher put me through.Am I destined to feel this mush anguish and misery, she thought. Her holographic skin started to stink like the dead skin you would find on the bottom of your foot after running a 10 km race, only one thousand times worse. It almost smelled fried, like she was sampling her own nasal cavities. Disgusting. But it was certainly worth the wait.
So the green gem wanted her to scream now right. He is hungry for respect, just like a man. I will be abused until I respect him.
