Variscite was instantly distracted by half a dozen bat-like corrupted gems. Each had a 3'2'' wing span. Their wings were sky blue on the bottom and purple on the top side. The body was mostly white. Each frost bat had two smaller wings beating at a higher frequency then the larger ones. The bats cut Variscite's, arms, torso, and face with razor sharp talons and the boney tips of their wings, which almost appeared metallic. Variscite turned to slice down the bats individually, sometimes using swords, and other times launching the grappling hook a short distance to skewer two at once. They were beaten in seconds.
A distance away something had stirred. The rhinoceros was charging at her. It had survived?! Inconceivable! She had been distracted with the bats. It bored into her full force, almost poofing her with the intense impact. Variscite managed to right herself as she flung through the air a few yards from the beast. As it prepared to charge again Variscite gave a tired, cold glare towards the brute and prepared to finish it.
Once he had regained the strength Sulfur stood and ran his hand through his hair. The cold air seemed to make healing easier. He charged back to the mouth of the cave. Stabbing his swords in diagonal lines across the mountain side he was able to use them as stairs of sorts. He soon reached the location he had left off, Variscite was still engaged with the rhinoceros, but several shards lied at her feet. She had been dealing with more.
It was then that he saw a black shape high on the mountain. Fog and snow blowing through the wind clouded his vision. He knew what he had seen. It was their target, the most powerful corruption he had met. He grit his teeth in excitement, glad that it had not left yet. They still had a chance to take it down. He levitated to a rock near Variscite and watched her fight the beast. His strength was regained by now.
As Variscite cartwheeled away from the beast's wild charge, she noticed Sulfur watching her. She was ashamed to look weak in front of the Count. She was still fighting the same creature... While the rhinoceros righted itself, Variscite launched her grappling hooks. One hook from each grapple managed to pierce the monster's eyes. The determined gem pulled at the weapons caught her enemies' skull. It roared in, but no matter how much it pulled and yanked, corrupted gem could not free itself from the snare.
Variscite circled around behind it, scooping out parts of its brain with the penetrating hooks. Soon she gained enough momentum to land on top of the beast and cut its throat with her two swords. It screamed and staggered back and forth as if ready to poof from the agony it felt. Upon seeing its weakness, Variscite pulled with her weapons until the hooks were able to return, blasting the head into pieces and poofing the creature.
Variscite landed on the snow floor with easy and threw the gem near Sulfur, hoping to regain his respect by allowing him the pleasure of shattering it.
Sulfur watched with a stern expression as Variscite fought. She seemed eager to win his respect. His expression didn't convey that he was looking down on her, he seemed that he was trying to watch the battle closely. He watched her movements as she fought, seeing mistakes everywhere as she attacked with her weapons. However, he saw those mistakes all of the time. Those mistakes kept him alive. At any rate, she was doing remarkably well, much better than during their first encounter. He laced his fingers together as he watched.
Sulfur watched as Variscite brutally tore apart the creature's skull. He grinned, however through his laced hands this was hard to see. He watched her poof the creature. He leapt down toward her and caught the gem as he landed, bashing it against the rocks in one, swift motion. He then turned to her with a look in his eyes that displayed vanity yet respect at the same time.
"I appreciate it, but it would pleasure me more to watch you gain your rightful shatter."
Then Variscite turned and faced an ice cave. She and her cohort charged inside, ready for whatever may dwell within. As Variscite slid along the icy path, she encountered a flaming creature, coming from a lava pool inside the ice cave.
It had the appearance of a totem pole with tiki faces on its arms and legs. The front face on its head bared a striking resemblance to a bird mask. It lunged at Variscite, attempting to bash her with its enormous arms. Variscite rolled to dodge, not wanting to slip and skid on the ice. She then ran up an icy wall and slid from the roof of the cave to where she had initially stood, firing her grapples while doing so. This managed to take off the totem pole's arm. Variscite lunged at it and flipped it on its back, ignoring the scorch marks on her body and blew of its gem with a hook. She jumped to her feet after cooling off in the ice to avoid further burn damage.
It was then that the beasts attacks became relentless. A large polar bear-like corruption covered in Icicle spikes charged to ram Variscite. It aligned itself sideways with her to ram her with it's stomach. It seemed to have noticed that the gem was recovering and had taken the perfect chance to attack. Sulfur wasn't as concerned with this as he was impressed that the beast had coordinated so well.
At any rate, he was about to attack it and protect his affiliate when another beast leapt from the lava. This beast resembled a salamander but with four eyes and a stitched-up-looking mouth that had holes which oozed lava from the pool. As it leapt it vomited lava onto him. The count twirled backward evading the lava. The ice melted under it, creating a deep hole. He summoned two blades and tilted his head as he looked at the beast with one beady eye.
Variscite realized that she had no time to dodge this massive attack, so she extended her blades, which pirced the creatures stomach harshly as it slammed her into an icy wall. Variscite recovered only to be thrown by the creature once more; landing head first on the floor. This twisted Variscite's head and almost poofed her.
The bear came quickly and pricicely, ready to finish the job. What a shock! This random corrupting was about to end Varicite once and for all. No. I won't allow it. As the creature's lethal claws bore down on Variscite, she corrected her head and stood on her head to kick the beast's jaw. At the last moment, the determined gem slid out from under the polar bear.
This creature was far more powerful than the rhinoceros. It had similar burliness, but it was intelligent. It also possessed skill and could coordinate its brutish attacks.
The creature came at Variscite fast, reaching her in half a second.
Sulfur advanced toward the salamander in a creepy sort of way, showing no sign of care. The beast was confused by his behavior. It's reaction was late, as it was about to vomit a stream of scarlet fluid Sulfur jabbed his blade under the beast's bottom jaw. The blade's tip emerged from the top of it's lead. Lava spewed from the puncture. Twisting the blade and jamming his knee into it's face the beast poofed. He crushed the gem under his foot.
Sulfur backflipped to Variscite. He stood in front of the charging beast. It seemed as if he were sacrificing himself as the beast careened toward them. Then with a flick of his wrist six blades appeared. The creature impaled itself on the blades. Sulfur used these blades to hoist the creature into the air. As the creature tore apart it poofed. The gem he stabbed midair. He stabbed it repeatedly, torturing the beast. Once it shattered Sulfur looked at it's remains. Nothing was in his eyes.
Variscite showed no sign of fear or disgust, but instead seemed oddly interested. The Count was deranged for sure, but how he tortured a gem... This was different from simple sadism. It was a small hint of the sadistic traits her other 'masters' had possessed, such as gaining pleasure for hurting others. However, in this situation something was different. Sulfer had a hollow gaze in his eyes, as if he felt no emotion when he tortured the gem. He did not quite fit the category of a sadistic torturer like Chalcedony. She could not figure out why he killed. For the sole sake of killing, maybe, but then why would the Count go out of his way to torture the corrupted gem?
Variscite quickly turned when a barrage of ice shards came for her. The agile gem cartwheeled and then preformed a backflip to avoid being run through by the spikes. Her opponent was a twelve foot long wyrm. The wyrm seemed to be made out of solid, yet flexible ice. The silhouette of its gem could be seen in the center of its translucent body.
Variscite rolled to dodge a larger barrage of ice crystals aimed at the two gems and dashed toward it, ready to confront her foe.
Sulfur too charged toward the beast. One blade materialized in front of him, blocking ice crystals that flew his way. He quickly got nearer to the Wyrm's head, occasionally darting to the side to dodge ice spikes that got too numerous for his single blade. As he neared the beast he drew two blades. Leaping over the beast he attempted to slice down it's back. The beast however, was more agile than he had thought, darting forward.
Sulfur only succeeded in slicing the ground. A stream of fire came next, a quick somersault aided in avoiding that rubbish. Sulfur then darted to the creature, which flew upward. It hurled more icicles at him which he blocked with his blades. As he blocked he occasionally had to leap back. This meant that the wyrm gained more ground.
Variscite dashed towards her enemy, careful to not lose control on the ice. She launched her grappling hooks at the wyrm while it was distracted with the Count. However the beast managed to counter by spreading ice from the ground, creating an ice shield. As part of the shield shattered from Variscites grapples, she swung her body low, taking cover behind the remainder of the shield. As Variscite moved horizontally away from the ice wall, the beast's tail came crashing through it. Particles from the ice struck Variscite. The tail swing released even more ice shards, which shallowly priced her body. Variscite ignored the pain and back flipped onto the monster, breaking of a wing with the penetrating impact of her grappling hooks. As the her enemy tried to bite her head off, Variscite jumped, positioning herself on the celling of the cave. The dragon-like creature clawed at her and breathed fire, even so, she evaded the attacks and launched her hooks again, tearing of small chucks of the corrupted gem and weakening its ice body as she landed carefully behind it, ready to continue.
Sulfur noticed that the chunks of ice were weakening the creature. Seizing the opportunity he darted toward the wyrm. Picking up speed as he ran he started to levitate. Pulling out his dual blades he attacked the beast's torso. Stabbing it repeatedly Sulfur cackled maniacally, desperately trying to chip away at it's scales. The beast however, darted toward him. It rammed it's attacker backward. Darting at Sulfur from several directions at an incredible speed it repeatedly pounded Sulfur into the walls.
Suddenly, ten blades appeared under the dragon. They stabbed into the chipped off scales on it's chest. As the swords tore away at the beast they moved slowly, prolonging the suffering. Tendons stretched, curled around the blades, were stabbed and torn out viciously. Sulfur caught his breath and stood. As the gem poofed he lunged into the air and sliced downward, finishing it off. He desummoned his blades and turned to Variscite.
"Care to take a breather? The next enemy is the strongest by far."
Variscite wondered if it would gain her any respect. No. The next enemy was "the strongest by far." Variscite figured it would be wise to regenerate and rest to regain stamina. She also needed to replenish her mental strength. Judging by the way Sulfur asked her if she wished for a break, he figured it was a wise decision as well and possibly could use the "breather" too.
"Very well. If it is within your desires as well to rest before a powerful encounter to regain power, then I agree."
Variscite moved toward the wall of the icy cave, slowly bending down as her joints cracked, to sit. She then began to stretch and relax her muscles.
Five minutes after the "breather" had begun, a swarm of several hundred frost bats came like a thick cloud of death. The creatures hovered nearby, ready to strike.
In response the green gem only nodded. He then sighed deeply, as if letting out the damage he had taken in the previous battles. Sulfur slid down the wall of the cave and sat crossed legged. He seemed to be meditating, his eyes were closed and his hands were together. His breaths were deep. He stretched his legs. After about five minutes the sound of the flapping of wings was heard. Out of the blue, hundreds of bat-like corruptions were filling the air.
The green gem had a different target in mind. He hopped up a few blocks of ice to reach a high mound near the exit of the cave. He checked briefly to see if his trainee was following him. He found a large block of ice, wedging three blades underneath he let it loose from it's location. He prepared to drop it over the entrance once his apprentice had made it out.
Variscite looked in the direction Sulfur had retreated to. Variscite nodded, stretched her body out, cracked her knuckles, and took off. The beasts came at her while she attempted to reach the top of the mountain. Ordinarily, this would be quite easy with Variscite's grappling hooks, however, the bats made it far more difficult. Every time she attempted to grapple onto something, six to eight bats would swarm her. Variscite used her short blades to hack them down, but received quite a few bites. Finally, she managed to jump threw the air, preforming flips and the like, to reach the top.
Once there, Variscite rushed through the entrance the Count had created. The gem looked down at her wounded body and focused all her energy on it. The holographic parts began to regenerate, until at last, Variscite was ready to continue again.
Melody: as usual, just waiting for posts
