Variscite considered Sulfur's words. Thoughts began to swim in her mind.
Victory!? What was that supposed to mean! They had tried so hard, and yet the two of them failed to subdue the corruption. Despite this, her master's words carried authority. He spoke from wisdom he had obtained. It was true that dwelling on something that happened in the past will not necessarily relevant toward personal improvement. In fact, it hindered development.
The green gem resided to not be visible upset by the loss. Rather, she would rejoice with her master and wait for the creature to return at a more opportune time.
The exhausted gem got up, snapping several parts of her body as she did so.
"Thank you, Master. I will have patience for another chance to take this beast down."
"Yes, patience. Now please rest. I know that you are exhausted. It's not very profitable to cause long term damage to your form. If you want the best results you should be willing to rest." Sulfur said, lying down on his back. "This should only take about five minutes and then we will be ready to return to the warp pad."
Sulfur lied there very still. If he were organic one might have thought he was dead. He didn't move a muscle and was completely still. After five minutes passed, which felt like an eternity, he sat up.
"Are you ready to return to the foot of the mountain Vari?" Sulfur asked. "Don't feel as if you need to mask your exhaustion. Pain is only weakness leaving the body."
Variscite smiled in agreement at Sulfur's concept of pain and weakness. She would feel no shame in not hiding behind a poker face in front of him.
"I am ready."
The rested gem scanned the horizon to see if the Reaper was still in sight or had returned. It was not.
Next Variscite set her sight on the path ahead of her, her return journey. It was likely that they would face many more corrupted gems upon their decent to the warp pad. She closed her eyes and breathed.
Within the elapse of three two four seconds, the lively acrobat ran on top of the blocks of the collapsed ice barrier left by retreating from the bats and proceeded to leap of the edge of the cliff, descending into a lengthy fall to a lower place on the mountain. As she fell Variscite contracted her arms and legs to speed up her fall, knowing Sulfur would catch up with ease.
"Excellent" Sulfur said, standing and stretching. He pulled his frozen jacket back over his torso and tugged it to make the shards of ice fall off of it. He noticed what she was doing and looked at her with a baffled look. He walked to the edge and leapt down after her. After a few seconds they were falling at the same speed. Sulfur's hair blew and after a few attempts at speaking to Variscite he grumbled in irritation. He tucked his hair into a ponytail and then began.
"Vari, how are you to survive this fall?" He asked, still falling. "My abilities should allow me to catch myself if I am careful, but this is a risky matter. Feel no need to prove yourself. You have already done that."
"Thank you for your concern, but it is not that I mean to prove myself here. As a Variscite, I possess high resistance to poofing from pressure impact. A fall that would shatter many gems may not crack me, let along poof me. It will only hurt a great deal. Yet I do not plan on hitting the ground either."
With that, Variscite extended her arms slightly to slow her decent as she neared the bottom. Variscite preformed skydiver-like motions to guide herself through the air and avoid hitting large stalagmites made of ice. A few of the corrupted bats from earlier flew at them upon their descent. Leaving some for Sulfur, Variscite extended her grapples and slashed them horizontally and vertically to cut down and shatter the opposing gems.
Upon reaching three hundred feet from the bottom, Variscite took in a deep breath and used her grappling hooks to pull her self to the side of the mountain. As the hooks scrapped against the ice coated stone walls they screeched and banged as they latched on. Variscite's arms twisted past the point of comfort as she began to jolt her body to slow her decent. Soon, she was able to jump and dash down the mountain, allowing momentum to carry her body. When Variscite reached the bottom, she scrapped her hooks in the mountain side some more and finally propelled herself of off the wall and landed on a relatively soft snow bank.
"Excellent Vari." Sulfur said, crossing his arms and nodding. He was glad that she didn't plan on committing suicide. His pawns needed to be alive to have any worth. He remained with his arms crossed as he fell.
Sulfur noticed that she saved some bats for him to attack, but he decided to do something unexpected. As he fell he darted around a bat and pushed off of it with his feet to gain a bit of extra speed, leaving the rest airborne. Upon reaching four hundred feet from the bottom Sulfur darted to the mountain, stopping and levitating a few feet above a cliff. He dropped to his feet and rested for a minute before jumping off of this cliff. His descent was much slower since he was now only falling about four hundred feet, rather than about nine hundred. As he dropped he spread his arms like Variscite had done. When he reached about seven feet from the bottom he started levitating. He dropped to the floor and walked to the snowbank that Variscite had flown into.
Variscite quickly emerged from the snow bank. Her landing had been fairly successful, but she wished she had preformed cleaner movements while running down the mountain side. She looked at the scrapes she had added to the side of the mountain. It was as if she was a modern artist who had decided to gracefully move his brush down the canvass, creating streaks all the way to the bottom. She then though of her gem weapons. This would have never worked if they were human weapons. Fortunately the gem technology allowed for sturdy materials. Her hooks were strong enough and sharp enough to even slice through hardened rock. No damage had been sustained to her weapons at all. When Variscite was finished marveling at the technology, she focused her attention on Sulfur.
"As I can see." He said with a grin. "Now tell me what you thought of this mission. Some may say that we failed this quest, but I say that we succeeded. What do you think Variscite, and more importantly, why? I am more interested in hearing your opinion than changing it. So please, describe in detail what you thought of this. Did anything stand out, did something seem unusual about this? This was no mere monster hunt I can tell you. What are your thoughts on today's hunt?"
Sulfur levitated and put his hands in his pockets. He forced a blade to dart back and forth behind him for some reason. As he floated he had one leg straighter than the other, as if he were a doll whose limbs hung.
It seemed that Sulfur wished for her opinion despite the fact that she already told him she felt she had failed. Perhaps he wished her to think more about her own views and ideas. This was certainly an important skill she needed to work on, so the war like gem was glad to accept this kind of training, even if it did not involve fighting.
"I... admit I am not as optimistic as you about the out come of this mission. I believe that we failed because we lacked the ability to stop this mighty creature. However, the fact that I do not regret accompanying you on the mission nonetheless is worthy of mention. You see, while we may have failed the task of subduing the beast, it was a difficult adversary. It fact, the Reaper is the hardest opponent I have ever had the pleasure of facing. It has taught me that I am still very weak and am in need of more improvement. I have learned that their is much more work to be done."
Variscite nodded, walking down the trails of the mountain while she spoke.
Sulfur seemed to sit on an invisible chair as he listened to her. He leaned his head on his hand and seemed rather amused. Once she had finished he stood from his chair and started to walk beside her instead of float.
"Yes... you don't seem very optimistic, yet you said something quite interesting and true. You had the pleasure of facing the Reaper." Sulfur said, raising one finger in the air to indicate that it was important. "Pleasure, because it was a powerful opponent. If success was my goal then I would be only fighting the weakest creatures. The reaper is perhaps the strongest corruption that exists. I like to fight creatures stronger than me because it means that I will learn how much I have to improve. Nothing feels better than rising to face a challenge that you before saw as impossible. If he would have defeated it, now that would have been a failure. Our mission really would have had no value. He would have just been another corruption below us. What really matters is that you don't regret coming to face him, even if it means you will lose."
He put his hand on her shoulder.
"Continue to fight strong opponents." Sulfur said. "You will only be able to measure your strength by defeating a foe stronger than you."
"Th-That's true!" Variscite exclaimed some what quietly.
She was shocked by Sulfur's wisdom.
What he had just pointed out was the fact that both himself and Variscite sought to fight strong opponents worthy of being fought rather than weak ones. Although the anxious gem still hated running into an opponent she had difficulty beating, she still believed that fighting such a monster was both imperative, and useful for power gaining. The more Variscite was beaten, the more she would realize where her disgusting weaknesses resided. The problem with loosing to an opponent was simply that they could take advantage of her if it so desired. This was why Variscite never wanted to be defeated, but she had to lose in order to not lose in the future. Where could she draw the line?
Immediately after the female gem's last thought, a large insect like appendage struck near her. Variscite rolled out of the way, summoning her gem weapons while doing so, and launched her grapples into the oversized leg, tearing it off. Variscite's ability to attack while evading another attack was something she had spend nearly a year working on, and it had payed off. She prepared for combat as the eighteen meter long, bright red arachnid-scorpion showed itself.

"Well I am glad that you can see it my way. When gems are alike they do better alongside on the field of battle... With that I guess we can conclude this hunt as a success. Now I have some pressing matters to attend to, so now we will part. I encourage you to seek out opponents much stronger than you are, only then will you become stronger. Well, not corrupted gems, if they poof you and crack you, it could lead to corruption. I would recommend finding powerful homeworld gems as sparring partners. Besides, you are more powerful than any corruption I have seen before, other than the reaper of course."
He turned behind him and gasped. He smirked and summoned his twin blades. He charged toward the scorpion as it's tail shot out. He ducked to the right and hacked away at the tail. He smirked as he chopped off the tip, but the tail swung at his chest. He blocked with his blades but was still knocked back at least three meters.
Variscite used Sulfur's block as an opportunity to approach the beast. Extending her short swords, the gem hacked away at the tail until she completely tore it off. Yet, to Variscite's great disappointment, three fresh tails identical to the first, burst forth from the festering wound of the corrupted gem.
After the spider-scorpion reeled its body back, it began to repeatedly target Variscite, who dodged every time. When she careened around boulders and darted past two more blows, it pined the female gem with two tails.
I can not dodge this.
Variscite braced as the remaining tail tore through the tender muscle between her shoulder and her neck, burrowing itself all the way down to her stomach. The ensnared gem shrieked and shook violently to break free, but of no avail. As disgusting, yellow froth foamed from her mouth, Variscite turned toward Sulfur with a board expression, waiting for him to save her.
Sulfur blinked as his face twisted with rage, struggling to get a grip on the situation. He felt frustrated, having been unable to deal with the beast faster. He roared as he fired all ten of his blades at the beast. The blades jabbed into the beast and jerked about violently. As all blades spun about the beast tearing it apart they looked very similar to a blender. The blades moved so fast that they were only visible in a blur. Sulfur's blades tore the flesh from the beast and mangled it's body as they twisted about.
Sulfur ran and shot his hand inside of the beast. His second hand also jabbed into the beast. He started to savagely jerk pieces of the corruption out of it's body with his hands. In a short while the beast poofed. Sulfur charged forward and rammed the gem of the beast with his knee. The force shattered the creature. He turned to Variscite. He showed no signs of worry, knowing that she did not take permanent damage in the fight.
Variscite made a scowl as she allowed herself to collapse in the floor. The determined gem, however, did refused to loose consciousness. She would permit rest in front of Sulfur as a method of regaining lost strength without feeling like she looked weak to him, but passing out was nearly unforgivable.
As Variscite groaned and confused her body to rid herself of the absurd volume of highly toxic fluid gently burning away at every body part she possessed. The curious gem had heard rumors from humans of a place known as 'Hell.' If such a place existed, was this what it felt like. No. Hell had to somehow feel worse. Variscite smiled at the positive thought that she was not feeling the worst pain in existence as molten flesh leaked out of almost one hundred gapping holes in her soft, tenderly peeling skin as it began to shed.
As she looked up at Sulfur, the wounded gem's left eye darkened until it dissolved from acidic liquid that started leaking out from her empty eye socket.
