For once the mostly unused Sky Arena had some life to it, the decrepit location filled with the echoes of weapons clashing. Two small red gems stood in the center, clashing periodically in little skirmishes. Neither seemed to have the upper hand, it seeming like a rather even matching despite their rather similar appearance. After their latest clash the two of them stood a distance away from one another collecting themselves, one speaking up over the silence, "You're not doing to bad Pye, if you're not careful I might actually think you are improving!" The grin he flashed the other gem made sure what he said was merely poking fun, though she was well aware of his sense of humor, "Well you might want to be careful, otherwise I might think you're getting worse." She flashed him a similar grin, their rapport was clearly nothing new.
She was the first one to make the next move, rushing forward and slamming her greatsword down onto her sparring partner's block, throwing in a hooking kick to throw him off balance. But he was prepared and took a step back while deflecting her blade to the side. He returned the favor moments later, swinging his hammer in a large arc with all of his weight. Pye knew better than to try and take a blow like that head on, instead backing off, "Getting slow Pyre~"
And so they continued like this, battling back and forth verbally and physically. For the most part they were both oblivious to anyone nearby or entering.
The warp pad lit up followed by that classic warping noise that many gems were used to. The gem that stepped off of the pad was Cherry Opal. She was a tall, dark red gem who actually happened to look similar to the two gems sparring in the arena. Cherry held her kanabo over her shoulders in a kind of relaxed, yet cautious pose. She heard.. Something, but she couldn't quite make out what it was. It kinda sounded like fighting, but something was mixed in with the noises of combat. She brought her kanabo down in a slow arc, and held it with her hands now wary that there were others in the sky arena. She began to move towards the noise cautiously with her kanabo ready for anything.
Finally an extended silence had been made, the two gems backed off and circled one another working out any stiff parts of their projections. During this little break the male looking one noted the warp stream coming down, closing the distance between his companion with his weapon lowered, "We've got company it seems."
The two of them stopped what they were doing and sat down in the bleachers around the arena, waiting to see who or what had arrived. Neither were particularly worried, more curious than anything. Besides, no need for some gem coming up on them while they were distracted. Just barely they could hear their steps on the stone from here, but it seemed they had yet to fully reveal themselves so Pyre spoke up to whoever might be listening, "Hey, ever heard of knocking?"
"Who knocks when they warp?" She said stepping forward towards the two gems and revealing herself in the process. "That seems redundant since the warp makes a noise anyways." She said as she looked at both of the shorter gems. "Were you two sparring by chance? I thought I heard combat but I don't see any poofed gems on the ground." Wait did she just greet them without even asking for their names? This planet was starting to affect her mind. Usually she would ask "What are your names?" in a very hostile tone, but now? She didn't see a reason for it. None of the gems she had met had attacked her upon meeting them. She doubted these two would be any different.
"I didn't mean... never mind." The two looked this gem up and down, it was obvious from their outfit this was indeed a loyalist gem. Pye smiled warmly, "Heya! Yeah, we were doing some practice to sharpen our skills. I'm Pye and this is Pyre by the way, lovely to meet you." She hopped down and walked up to shake her hand, meanwhile Pyre stayed where he was seated watching the newcomer closely.
"You know, we've actually been wanting to try out some new moves but we need a third partner." She looked back at Pyre who simply shrugged, "If you feel up for it, I still have some energy in me. What do you say... actually I don't believe we got a name."
"It's lovely to meet both of you." She put her kanabo over her right shoulder like a baseball bat, crouching down to shake their hands. She gave a warm smile back as she shook her hands. These two must be loyalists- No rebels were this nice to her, nor were neutrals. These two were cute together. She let go of Pye's hand but stayed crouched. As they continued speaking she examined both of them before replying. "Oh uh.. Sure! I don't see why not. And my name is Cherry Opal, but you two can just call me Cherry if you want." When she was finished speaking she stood back at her full height, and stretched preparing to spar the two gems. She wondered how they planned on sparring- Two against one, one at a time? Guess she was about to find out.
Pyre nodded a few times before standing up and stretching, "Alright, well nice to meet you I suppose. Good to at least know your name before we start beating up on one another." He grabbed Pye's hand and led her over to the other side of the arena, "Let's start with some one on one, yeah?" She gave Cherry a wink and moments later the two small gems glowed as their outlines melded together into a fusion. The newly formed fusion did some basic stretches to limber up before summoning forth their hybrid hammer/sword weapon.
She stood in a guarded stance with a small smirk, "Heh, your move." And so she waited for Cherry to ready herself and get the first strike.
Cherry stopped stretching for a moment. Did they just.. fuse? Well I guess that wasn't too surprising considering that they seemed to be a couple, but still. She thought for a moment. If Homeworld was okay with it so was Cherry. She readied her kanabo, and took a few steps forward. She wasn't a massive fan of attacking first, but since they had invited her to sparring she should show courtesy towards them. She tried not to show what her attack would be, before going for a diagonal, downwards strike. She exerted a fair amount of strength into the attack, and yelled as she attacked. The kanabo was already a heavy hitting weapon, and combined with Cherry's strength it would hurt even more if the attack landed. Cherry doubted it would- The first attack usually didn't hit unless you were against someone fighting for the first time.
Cherry's weapon was an interesting one, it reminded Pyope of a club although far more sophisticated than a simple chunk of wood. While she could have made an attempt to dodge or even deflect the blow, instead Pyrope took it head on with the staff of her weapon. Using one of her abilities she absorbed the blow and dispersed it across her form, when fighting a new foe like this she liked to take the first hit to try and judge their strength. Suffice to say, even with her ability, it was a powerful strike. She couldn't afford to take too many direct hits, already she was making plans to work around their weapon.
After taking the blow she pushed her weapon to the side and backed off, "My turn!" Moving swiftly she charged forward with her weapon at her side, using the greatsword tip like a large spear hoping to pierce through Cherry's defenses. Once in range she thrust the weapon forward then followed up by turning her entire body in a full circle using the momentum to swing it sideways with the hammer head. The attack took a lot out of her, but the sudden dual-attack would hopefully push Cherry onto the defensive if nothing else.
Cherry hadn't exactly been expecting a dual attack. She deflected the first jab easily enough but didn't realize she had swung around with the hammer. It slammed into Cherry's side, causing her to recoil and get pushed to the left a bit. This gem used a heavier weapon like Cherry, however this weapon was still quick. She could tank a fair amount of hits from the pointy end but she needed to be careful of that hammer and be prepared for quick combos. Despite the seemingly clumsy nature of Cherry's kanabo it was quite quick in the hands of a skilled user such as the shock drop trooper. She swung the kanabo around her head to gain momentum, yet before actually striking up top she actually pointed the kanabo downwards and went for an uppercut-like strike. Hopefully this little fake out would cause Pyrope to block up top, and not be prepared for the real strike.
Instead of pressing the attack Pyrope backed off to give Cherry a moment to gather herself, this was a friendly duel after all not a fight to the death. She grinned upon seeing how quickly Cherry returned the favor. Good, this gem wasn't some push over. No point of practicing against a gem who can't hold their own.
As expected she went to block the overhead strike, caught entirely off guard by the sudden uppercut that followed the feign. Her head flew back and she staggered a few feet backwards. It took her a moment to collect herself and get past the ringing in her head, blinking the daze out of her eyes and cracking the stiffness out of her neck, "Oof, you're deceptively fast with that I'll say that much."
Then immediately she was back on the offensive, dashing forward with a horizontal hammer swing. However she stopped short Cherry by a foot or so, using her ability to instead transfer the power of the strength into a projectile of sort that flew out at an arrow's pace. She pressed forward after the projectile to make a backwards strike with her hammer followed by a shoulder bash. Such a combo was fast, but if any of it missed it did leave her open for a counter attack.
Cherry gave a quick yelp of pain not being able to dodge such a quick projectile. She shook it off and managed to block the attempted hammer strike. This however, left her open for the body check which connected and pushed her back a fair amount. She had tanked it pretty well again. "Gah, I gotta say the same for you and that hammer." Cherry didn't go for an actual attack, but instead her visor darkened and she quickly summoned what seemed to be a small grenade like object (this object happened to be a flash 'grenade'). She held it for 3 seconds, and then tossed it. After it went off (it had a 4 second fuse) she would run in for a hit with the bottom of the handle of her kanabo, which would be followed up with a solid, strong horizontal strike from the rest of the kanabo.
"Thanks, you know it's all in th-" She was cut off as whatever Cherry had thrown exploded right in front of her, blinding her for a few moments too long. While her vision was still blurred Cherry's initial strike connected, staggering her for a moment longer so the following swing struck her side dead on. The wind was knocked out of her and she spent a good few seconds trying to gather her senses.
Eventually her vision returned, although the nagging pain in her side seemed intent on staying. Still, she was able to brace herself back on the defensive, "Neat little trick there, gotta say that seems pretty handy in a pinch." Still recovering from the blow Pyrope decided to stay defensive, raising a hand and motioning for Cherry to continue.
The drop shock trooper saw her choice to go defensively and took 2 steps back holding her kanabo up like someone would hold an axe. If they hadn't been sparring and didn't know each other Cherry might've seemed kind of intimidating. Of course, if they seem intimidating they're probably very sweet and kind according to every single cartoon ever- well, unless they're a villain that is. ”Yeah.. It's useful for getting a few quick strikes in or escaping from a bad situation.” Cherry said, her visor turning back to normal. The initial adrenaline of the battle was beginning to waver. Slight pain radiated from the points on her body that she had been hit. She could deal with it for now. Cherry realized that no matter what move she threw next it would most likely be blocked due to Pyrope’s defensive stance. This meant that she'd have to attack in a quick combo to try and get a hit in.
She swung her kanabo around her head to get momentum in a large horizontal strike. Hopefully even if she blocked this the strength behind the attack might cause her to stumble. The next attack was much quicker and was a simple bunt with the front end of her kanabo. It was followed up by another quick attack that linked well with the last one. This time she moved the handle end up to Pyrope’s face, and if that were to connect it would be followed up with a quick elbow. If any of these attack were to miss it would leave her open and vulnerable to a counter attack.
Taking the time to try and read Cherry's attacks instead of countering proved wise, giving Pyrope a few critical seconds to jump back to avoid the initial swing. The following combo was the real issue, causing her to stumble just barely to the side from the second strike followed by a swift smack to the side of her face by the end of that dangerous kanabo. The strike was disorienting to say the least (internally she used some much more colorful language picked up on Earth) and left her little choice than to back off again, taking a quick stab with the spear-like tip to keep Cherry at bay. Time for a different tactic...
Getting some distance between them Pyrope finally stopped retreating and took a solid stance as if she were to swing her weapon at a moments notice. Instead of holding it she instead did a full turn to build up momentum before coming around and... unfusing? Suddenly her form had glowed and the two smaller gems split once again, each holding their respective weapons. Pye was left standing there with her greatsword while Pyre was currently hurtling through the air towards Cherry (carried by the momentum created earlier) with his hammer in hand attempting a mid-air swing.
It was a bold strategy to put it lightly, leaving Pyre rather vulnerable if the surprise attack failed, but now there were two of them to deal with and they were intent on taking advantage of that situation. Pye moved up around to try and flank Cherry so she'd have to deal with an assault from both sides.
Melody: as usual, just waiting for posts
