The tricky thing about space travel is no matter how technologically advanced your civilization may be, your ship will never quite be prepared for the random encounters that will occur on the new planet you've found yourself in. The smallest thing could have dire consequences on your technology. Such as, for instance, if your ship begins its descent into the atmosphere and halfway down meets a graceful V-shaped formation of wild geese.
And then proceeds to suck two geese into the engine vents, turning one of the descent jets into a rave of sticky entrails and feathers and hopelessly jamming it with organic materials.
The ovoid ship began to wobble, overbalanced now that it didn't have an equal distribution of weight between its descent jets. That wobble became a full on end-over-end spin, gaining speed as it hurtled down towards the empty grassland that had been chosen for landing. Ship met ground, bouncing it into a destructive somersault. It slammed end-over-end three more times before finally skidding to a stop, teetering precariously at the top of the hill.
A sudden shockwave of something rupturing inside the ship bounced it free from the sear in the ground. Most of it's momentum expended, the ship leisurely rolled down the slope of the hill and stopped at the bottom, now wedged against a boulder. How fortuitous that it landed with the exit right-side up. Despite the landing, deep blue hull seemed as perfect as any Gem ship should be, albeit with the jets had sheared off. Smoke was pouring from the holes engineered to release the propulsion system in a terrible landing such as this one.
The door popped open, the insides obscured from view by more of the thick, billowing smoke.
