Lapis meandered around her old Kindergarten once again. Why she had begun coming here so frequently, she wasn't entirely sure. She had no fond memories here anymore, and it wasn't as if attempting to relive them did her any favors either. Regardless, here she was again. She felt that sinking internal duality again—as if she were supposed to like this place, but had since developed new feelings for the place. Perhaps she found herself coming here more often in order to confront that feeling.
Rounding a bend, she stopped mid-step and froze. With the dead silence of the Kindergarten as ambiance, she stared wide-eyed and face-to-face with the largest beetle she had ever seen. At least she thought it was a beetle, but no beetle she ever encountered had been three times her size. No beetle she ever encountered had a gem fitted between a pair of enormous mandibles either. She had no time to think on the implications of this, as the beetle seemed to be staring right at her despite having no discernible eyes. It lunged forward to snap at her, causing Lapis to spring backward with agility she wasn't aware she had. She turned and sprinted as fast as she could, with the beetle in the most silent pursuit ever—the only sound being the padding of Lapis' feet and that of the beetle's. It was gaining on her.
She nearly forgotten she could fly. Holding two hands to the gem on her chest and allowing the water to pour out and envelop her arms, she leaped into the air and flapped her arms frantically, with her rising panic making it difficult to maintain her wings. The beetle's back casing opened up to reveal it had wings of its own, and it was still faster than her. Taking to the sky would have been pointless. She'd have to outmaneuver whatever this was. She turned corner after blind corner in the Kindergarten, unaware of when she'd hit a dead end or if she'd run into another beetle. She rounded one corner to reveal a long, alley-like stretch of terrain. This is when the beetle could finally close the distance on her.
