Though none of the experiences 7XB has had on Earth so far had been especially pleasant, it had been their last mission that had soured the Quartz impression of the planet more than anything else; The mission to the Alpha Kindergarten with Euclase had left an impression on the hefty gem to say the least, and a lasting foul taste in their mouth. After the conclusion of that mission 7XB made the decision to remain on the base for, in their own mind, a relatively short time in a vain attempt to get their head back on straight.
However, they had not been idle, for their rubies had been Planetside almost the entire time their commander was away, gathering a much better lay of the land while maintaining a low profile (thankfully). Due to this, the Quartz was rather yo to date on current events; One of their older rubies, 2FG, had even sent them an advance transmission of the now-infamous message Variscite had transmitted.
That was, in fact, what brought 7XB here, in a dense forest 10 miles outside someplace called 'Beach City', the last known location of the rebel command in accordance with the reports. There they would find Varis. There they would fix the greatest mistake they had yet made.
It had certainly been some time since the last time Pyrope had been around XB, spending a few days away from working with the quartz. In fact it had actually been a rather enjoyable time for the most part, including a (for the most part) relaxing trip to the beach. Still, she couldn't avoid it forever. Though she wasn't expecting to meet XB so quickly, in fact she was on her to town for a last trip out to treat herself to some food before trying to track down that hot-headed gem.
Yet as fate would have it, Pyrope spotted the quartz on her way to the town. Not being a rebel she wasn't exactly aware of the pad within the temple, as such she had to travel for quite some distance to make it to the town. In the dense forest the rather light colored quartz was easy to spot, but then again so would the large red form of herself. Not one for sneaking she made her way up to XB without trying to conceal herself, "XB, is that you?"
It had not truly occurred to 7XB just how highly visible they might be: the Quartz had long since grown comfortable in their 'skin', so to speak, and seldom thought of themselves much as an individual, at least not consciously. Besides, they were a brawler, a soldier! Sneaking and hiding was hardly in their programming. Glaringly noticable or not, 7XB had been doing their best to ignore each and every organic lifeform on this planet, who were kind enough to at least pretend to do the same so far.
Though they had yet to come across any gems, rebel or otherwise. Until now.
The bulky gem turned swiftly on their heels as the sounds of an interloper reached their ears; The crunching of leaves had only alerted them when Pyrope was a yard or two away, a ball of burning plasma flickering to life as they turned to seek face the mystery speaker.
"Who..oh. Its you. The Pyrope fusion." And just like that, the quartz relaxed, or as close to relaxed they ever appeared around the Fusion, the light in their palm flicking away, followed shortly by the dull light within their gem. "What are the two of you doing here?" They demanded, eyes glinting with a stony suspicion in the dying light. "Did you follow me here?" It didnt seem likely, for they surely would have detected her before now..or one would hope.
It surprised Pyrope how calm XB was being (she was sort of expecting to be chewed out for her actions) but was nonetheless relieved, "I uh, well..." perhaps it was best just to tell the truth, "I was actually on my way to the local human settlement. I had some errands to deal with before I was intending to find you."
She shuffled awkwardly at the accusation, "Actually it was kinda dumb luck I found you I guess. I hope the mission has gone well in my absence." while she wasn't exactly sorry for storming off like she did (a friend was in need after all) Pyrope certainly did feel guilty that the mission to save gems might have been slowed down by her own absence.
In most other situations, the fusion's first guess would have been right- the Quartz would have been more than willing to reprimand them scathingly. In this instance, however, 7XB seemed exceedingly distracted, eyes cast off through the thickening treeline. Trees, trees, trees! By the stars, Must everything organic on this planet serve as an obstruction?!
They found themselves far off, brooding deep within until the crimson gem's query struck a chord with them. "The mission..?" They mimicked under their breath, "it's carrying on with..as much success as usual.."
'The mission..by the Diamonds, what am I doing?' leaving the Rubies alone in the search while they did..what? Settled a score? It sounded idiotic and worse, bordering on dereliction of duty.
"In spite of complications.", They tacked onto the end, a more obvious reference to the situation at the Spire, something that still ate away at them. 'Ill find him. Fix my mistake.' why did they all the sudden seem so frustrated, like a raw bundle of nerves.
She nodded, "I'm glad things are still moving forward." Pyrope awkwardly shuffled closer so that they were within comfortable talking range, leaning up against a nearby tree with her arms crossed over her chest. 'In spite of complications' their tone was loud and clear...
"Yeah I uh... I don't know what to say about that. Things were just getting out of hand and I just wanted to do what I could to help defuse the situation." she looked XB up and down, something wasn't right. They were taking things very personally it seemed, even back then Varis seemed to have triggered something, "Are you alright XB? It really feels like something is bothering you. Other than the fact you're on a planet full of rebel gems of course." Her tone was sincere, despite the fact she could easily be reprimanded for her actions (she did save a rebel after all) she seemed concerned for XB's mental state.
Their steely gaze cut, suddenly, towards Pyrope through the dying light, observing her as she attempted to justify her actions without their provocation, only reaffirming 7XB's belief that she, rightly so, felt guilty about her actions. "Defuse? Oh, yes, you certainly did that, didn't you? Gave that traitor plenty of time to heal up and record his little..manifesto at the Galaxy Warp." Their voice was chilly, perhaps unnecessarily so; The gem fusion had not been in violation of the mission with their actions. Truly the whole situation had only been a temporary distraction, at best an unsanctioned side objective..but the Quartz could help but feel betrayed by the crimson gem's actions, though this feeling was overshadowed by the shame they felt in their own part in it all.
As if they had failed somehow, somewhere.
Little time was left to dwell on this, though, as the Fusion's.. ridiculous question; A thick brow rose as arms crossed defensively over their chest, casting those steely orbs far aloft into the shadows.
"What are you even talking about?" They demanded, annoyed at the perceived change of topic, "of course I'm fine! What would be wrong with me?" It was as much a demand as a dismissal.
Despite feeling nervous her face did not falter, "I just didn't want anyone to get hurt. I know he's a rebel, but he's a good gem. Maybe he can be saved, I don't know..." truthfully she didn't know what to say, her affiliations were pulling her both ways. On one hand she was a soldier, and loyal to the Diamonds, but on the other Varis was her friend. Her comment was confusing however, "Manifesto? I must have missed something."
The suddenness of XB's voice made Pyrope flinch, "I'm not saying anything is wrong with you, alright? I'm just concerned there's something on your mind. That whole speech back at the Spire... that had to come from somewhere. I know you probably don't feel like trusting me right now, and for good reason, but it can't hurt to talk. Right? Before we're able to get any work done we're going to need to clear the air."
At the Pyrope continued her prodding, the Quartz gem's face contorted even farther, their brooding expression giving way to a much more clearly-angry one. Still, on some level they recognized the truth in Pyrope's words, a dark blue tint darkening the ivory expanse of the Quartz cheeks as they continued to allow their shame to run rampant; 7XB was not accustomed to talking about whatever trivial emotion flitted through them. In truth, they would much rather forget the whole mistake that was their outburst at the Lunar Spire. It was under control, now, and they wouldn't let whatever it was rise to the surface, in sight, ever again.
They were stubborn as a rule, perhaps too stubborn for their own good. "'A good gem'?" They oozed venomously, again attempting to turn the topic towards the subject of said outburst, "that's what you two are going to keep saying until he gets the chance to shatter you both, isn't it?" In their heightened state of irritation, 7XB found themselves growing increasing frustrated with the fusion and their apparent difficulty understanding what should have been simple concepts! "Variscite," they hissed with increasing hostility (and volume), "is a 'Crystal Gem'. A traitor to all of us! And Traitors are..are.. Ugh! This is a waste of TIME!". The raging quartz turned on their heels to practically sprint in the direction of Beach City, the shuddering ground beneath their feet alerting the still drowsy nocturnal to the encroaching danger, the underbrush alive with fleeing animals.
Pyrope would have stopped prodding had it not been for XB's subconscious reaction. The blushing was a clear indicator she was starting to get at the root of the issue, or at least something close to it. Although her personal quest to help XB was temporarily side tracked as her expression grew a tad dark. Her tone was quiet and cold, "He had the opportunity to shatter both of us when we first met. In fact it was not long after we had cracked him. But he didn't, he actually helped heal my... er, one of our gems that had been cracked for years. So before you throw around accusations, maybe try not to judge someone on first impressions." her face grew a bit softer, "We've all made dumb mistakes XB. It happens under stress, it's normal."
And just like that XB was off, distinctly heading towards the town just like Pyrope originally was. Sighing she followed just behind, finding some difficulty in meeting the frantic pace of the quartz.
Whether it showed through their actions yet or not, 7XB was, as the humans or a human-acting gem might say, 'running on empty'. Their was a tiredness, an unusual fatigue that permiated the very fabric of their being; They could not decipher the source of this, and it only infuriated them even more as they lumbered angrily through the thickening forest, the trees growing thick, older and more closely knit. "There is nothing natural OR okay about a mistake, war machine," they called, allowing the syllables to drift in their wake. "And..I..I do not make mistakes." Already they had begun to slow, their pace already decreasing by the time mother nature brought them to a screeching halt, their course leading them to a small, rugged clearing lined with picnic tables.
There was nowhere to go, now, in more ways than one.
They practically growled in frustration, stomping with such a raw, child-like anger that the nearest picnic table shook, the old radio upon it skipping a beat.
Surprisingly Pyrope was starting to gain on XB, in fact she noted that it was more due to XB slowing than it had anything to do with her speeding up. Once they had stopped Pyrope paused to gather herself, having exerted herself a bit to finally catch up. Her expression was rather confused, "You can't be serious, right?" she completely ignored the 'war machine' comment (now wasn't the time), "Of course it's natural to make mistakes, everyone makes mistakes! We can't all be perfect, besides... bes... b..." All the stomping and moving around XB was doing was starting to give her a headache, couldn't they just stand still for five minutes?! "Look, could you just talk to me! I'm not trying to force anything here, I'm just trying to settle things so it doesn't explode during some mission! I'm not here to judge, I of all people don't have any room to do so. I saved a rebel's life after all! I could be shattered for that sort of treason! Yet I'm here, and I want to help. But I can only help if you let me XB."
Despite the fact that they could, quite likely, bulldoze their way through the circle of trees with relative ease, they couldn't help but feel more trapped, like some kind of caged animal. They were so..so..what? What was it they were feeling right now? Again, they were unable to come to any sort of terms with this strange emotion, veering to face Pyrope again. Why couldn't she just leave them alone? 7XB has important things to do, though their mission, whether assigned or self-imposed, would only suffer from all the red they were seeing.
"I'm perfectly fine!" They vehemently frothed, as of yet unwilling to admit their weakness, the feeling that seemed to drain them every second it lingered. "I..I'm!.." 'tired. Why does this planet make me so weak? And..worn.' "Why do you even care?" Their angry features uncoiled into a look of genuine confusion, scarred with weariness. "Why..why can't you just leave me alone until I'm..fixed?" That was all they wanted to do, to find the source of their problem and destroy it. The weakness inside. "Just..until I can get my head..on straight?" They both remembered what happened at the Lunar Spire, but none remembered better than they did. The constant reminder, though, continued to grind on their nerves, making the troublesome fusion the center of their vortex of confusion and anger.
Whatever has happened had to be avoided at all costs, and buried. 7XB could not afford to loose control like that ever again.
Pyrope grew a tad shy at the new line of questioning, glancing away from XB, "Look, it aint easy being on this planet. I know what it's like to be here and for nothing to make sense, and from one soldier to another I just want to... I don't know, make things easier? I don't really have things worked out myself, I'm honestly just sorta winging this."
She sighed, "It's not as easy as just being 'fixed'. Keeping things pent up inside isn't good for you, mentally or otherwise. If nothing else, it might distract you from the task at hand." her eyes caught back onto XB's, "Look, if you don't trust me to be there for you then fine. We can keep working as needed and I won't bring it up again. But this won't solve itself, and I'm really worried you need to talk to someone." Pyrope took a step forward, "I can be that someone."
"No." 7XB said forcefully, as if answering a question of much more gravity. "No, it's not the same thing. I'm not trapped here. And..and neither are you." Already they were glaring again, their voice almost accusing the fusion of some heinous act. "I don't know what this rock does to gems who stay here too long, but I'm not going to let it happen to me. I have work to do." What was it about earth that made gems so weak and sentimental? Made fusions want to stay fused and turn noble strategems into slavering beasts? Were the rebels to blame, they wondered, or was there just something.. wrong about this rebelling colony?
"Talk?" They parroted, "we're talking now and it's not doing anything. And it won't. Why? Because I'm fine, and neither of you seem to get that. I. Do. Not. Need. More. Friends!"
"I've had..plenty of them. And it I don't want anymore."
