It's impossible to tell if Ruby heard Para, as she continued her trek up the creature's arm unabated, using her fists like ice axes to drag her way up the side of the beast. It tried to smack her off, but every time it did, she dug harder onto it. Once she was up its arm and right next to it's head, her knuckledusters glowed white hot, and she punched it over and over and over again, until the creature's form was beaten so badly, when it finally did unfuse, all the corrupted rubies just poofed altogether. Ruby hit the ground first, landing on her hands and knees, and then all the corrupted ruby gems did. This all happened probably in the course of 15 seconds.
By the end, Ruby made it to a stand and was breathing pretty heavily. "We... should get... Lapis... out of here..." She said in between breaths, probably to Para, since there was no other non-poofed gem in the area. It was only difficult to tell because she was staring angrily at the clump of three corrupted gems, as if debating what to do with them. Her knuckledusters were back down to orange-red, but she hadn't dissolved them.

Para clutched her bag closely, watching in awe as Ruby made quick work of the corrupted beast. She had never heard of a ruby fighting with such ferocity, in fact it would have defied logic if it wasn't for the fact she understood what lengths one would go to in order to defend someone they cared about. Still, it was almost terrifying to watch happen in front of her. Again she was glad to not be on the receiving end of this particular ruby.
Once things settled Para walked up behind Ruby with her back in-hand, staring down at the gem in front of her, "Yes we should get her somewhere to relax upon regeneration." There was a brief pause as she noted Ruby was still on guard, "You... you recognized that thing I imagine. What it used to be." her eyes glanced down to Ruby's knuckle dusters, "I know that must have been... 'uncomfortable' but don't do anything you might later regret."
At hearing Para's words, Ruby stood down, her knuckledusters finally dissipating. "You're... you're right, we'll deal with them later." She reached down, pushing them into a pile with a frown, and bubbling them all. She tapped the top of the bubble, as it zoomed off. "That should be back at the apartment." And then, as if answering an unspoken question, she turned to Para. "We had to learn how to bubble gems in training, as a way to evacuate cracked or injured squad members. Anyway, here - let's head this direction."
She started walking towards the woods on the right of the road, as woods flanked the road on both sides. "My ship - or... what's left of it should be a little bit of a walk away, but maybe we could find a clearing or something before then to wait for Lapis to regenerate. I'm sorry I sort of... put you in danger, Para. With this trip." She said, with an air of embarrassment.

There was an audible sigh of relief as Ruby brought her guard down, nodding in agreement without another word before following close behind.
Para looked a little confused, "What? Dear, you shouldn't worry about it. There was no way you could have known that th..." she decided against referring to the beast, "-that it would have happened. Besides, as you saw I came prepared for danger. No crashed ship is without its dangerous looters." She would know, after all she was often the one looting old broken down machines.
"Though uh... would you like to hold her till we get somewhere to relax? I imagine you would like to watch over her until she regenerates." She reached into her bag and offered Lapis' gem, figuring it might offer some sort of comfort until she rejoined them.
Ruby seemed to nod throughout what Para was saying, but would turn to her, eyes widening and almost seeming to twinkle slightly as she spotted Lapis' gem. "Oh... yeah." Perhaps she had been so clouded by rage she had forgotten, but she walked over and reached out to take it. She held it in two hands, turning it over and over as if trying to check for imperfections or cracks, and she nodded gently and cradled it in front of her, like how one might cradle a baby. "Here, there's a clearing just over this way." Ruby's voice was a lot less harsh now that she was holding Lapis' gem, and she was, of course, very gentle with it.
The clearing may not have really been 'just over this way,' because after about a fifteen minute walk, they would've finally arrived. It seemed like it would be sunset soon, as Ruby stopped walking near the center, and sat down, placing the gem in her lap and putting her hands on her knees, just watching it. To be fair, she hadn't really taken her eyes off it throughout this whole 15 minute period - she nearly walked straight into two different trees on the way there, and only glanced back every once and a while to check and see where Para was. "I'm sure she'll regenerate soon." Ruby noted to herself, and also Para, who was probably nearby.

Despite the seriousness of the situation they were just in Para couldn't help but give a small smile upon seeing how Ruby treated the dormant gem. That smile faltered for a moment as she flinched, watching Ruby run herself into a tree on at least two different occasions.
Once they had finally reached the clearing Para began pacing around for a couple minutes, trying to think about recent events and what dangers they might face moving forward. However she noticed Ruby glancing at her now and then and decided to sit down across from her, staying silent until Ruby broke the silence, "It could take a while, even a quartz would take a while to recover from a strike that painful." Upon realizing what she just said Para quickly added, "I am sure she is fine though!"
She decided to change subjects to avoid anything that might worry the already nervous Ruby, "I can tell you care about her. I mean, that is to say that I observe you are very protective. That is a positive trait."
"Yeah!" Ruby immediately replies to Para's statement without much hesitation. "I mean, of course I care about her! Not only are the both of us in sort of the same situation here on Earth - not being... exactly Crystal Gems and not being exactly, well, aligned with Homeworld either. And she's always trying to help me find my captain, and I owe her so much for that. And there's something else there too - I can't - ...really put my finger on." Ruby said curiously, rubbing her head somewhat before returning it to Lapis' gem.
"But I always just feel drawn to her side. Yeah, it's like - I have to protect her. And it never really feels like a chore, it always feels like something I want to do. But it's also something I need to do. You know?" Ruby said, looking up at Para as the sun set behind them. "Do you have a gem that you feel that way about?"

Para listened in silence and smiled lightly to herself. She was fairly confident she understood the situation and found it rather charming, though thinking about it she could say that about nearly every encounter she had with these two gems. They both were always so positive and honest, it gave her hope for not only her own situation but also the myriad of other gems trying to find their way.
She was somewhat surprised, although she really should have seen it coming, to have the question turned back to her, "Hmm... I do understand dear. It's an indescribable feeling. Not so much a thought or an idea, but an instinct." Her smile grew and she looked upon the setting sun, "There is a gem actually. One I'd give everything for. He inspires me to try my hardest and to do the right thing. Being around him keeps me grounded, keeps me sane in this crazy situation of ours."
Her eyes returned to Ruby, "If you feel this way about Lapis you should consider yourself lucky to find a gem like that."
"Hmm... maybe." Ruby said, looking down at Lapis' gem. "I guess being around her keeps me grounded, yeah." She thought on that for a little bit. As it got even darker, Ruby grabbed some random dead sticks and things from around the treeline and brings it to the center, using her Ruby powers in a bunch of different ways to start a small campfire, all one-handed. Once she was happy with it, she sat back down by the edge and made sure Lapis' gem was secure. "Do you share a shelter with that other gem? At the Temple, I guess? Right? The Crystal Gem temple on the beach?" Ruby looked back over at Para. "Like how I share a shelter with Lapis."

Seeing Ruby be this resourceful with her powers while at the same time caring for the dormant Lapis was interesting to watch, she never had seen a Ruby in the field after all. "This may be a strange question but... are all rubies as capable as you are? I have not spent much time around field gems like yourself."
She moved up to get closer to the fire, warming one of her hands towards the fire, "Shelter, hmm? That's actually a very apt word. Yes, we share a home. It doubles as a place of business too, hence why I don't leave very often." In her other hand Para made an orange poker to stoke the fire, "We don't stay at the temple though, we prefer to separate ourselves a bit from the rebels."
Ruby nodded through what Para was saying, then responded to her first question. "A lot of rubies are trained for survival. Building a fire means light, which we still need to see." Ruby explains. "I guess I do know a lot, though. Thanks to my captain." She looked off into the forest. "My captain taught me personally for a lot of my training - under her superior's orders. She was always so charismatic and kind and understanding - that's part of the reason I've spent so much time looking for her. I know she'd know what to do here on Earth. She'd at least remember what my mission is!" Ruby said, frowning. "Para - do you know why a lot of Rubies come to Earth? I mean, what were other Rubies here for?"
Post by Forge Master Para on Nov 27, 2017 8:38:18 GMT
"I know this isn't the first time I've said this, but if your captain truly is even more skilled than you then I have hope. If it had been a sapphire or even a padparascha then I wouldn't like their odds."
She was then rather put on the spot by that last question, having to think for a moment. Her view on rubies had drastically changed since leaving Homeworld's services, it some effort to put herself back in that mindset, "Well... I can't say I know why rubies are sent to Earth specifically. Rubies are often dispatched for all sorts of jobs, anything from protection to rescue missions. It would be hard to narrow it down without knowing more about your squad." Para paused for a moment as she scanned Ruby up and down, "Knowing you though, I bet you were here to keep something or someone safe."
Ruby smiled at the compliment for her captain, and looked back up at Para as she explained her guess about why Ruby was on Earth, and by the end of her explanation she was nodding. "Yeah! Yeah - that makes sense! I just hope it wasn't something like - protecting some sort of weapon for destroying the Earth. Like I've said, I may not be a Crystal Gem, but I don't think this planet should be destroyed. Neither of us want that." She gestured with Lapis' gem, before returning it to her lap, thinking again for a little bit. "I hope my ship has more information; that's the whole reason we're here is to find anything I missed."
Ruby looked off into the forest again. "I hope its all still there too."
Lapis' gem suddenly began to shine, and it lifted out of Ruby's hands. It glowed a bright white, and then the silhouette of Lapis took shape. Then the silhouette turned into actual Lapis, and she dropped out of the air and onto her butt, with the same confused expression she had the moment before she poofed. She blinked a few times and look around, trying to process the sudden change of environment outside her gem. Before she poofed they were out on open on a highway, with a giant monster, and now the sun is going down and there is a fire and there are trees everywhere. She looked very confused, but then began to smile when she realized being here must have meant they either won, or at least got away.
While in her gem, she seemed to have forgotten she had the opportunity to make changes to her appearance. She looks the same as she did before.
Ruby gasped and scrambled up, smiling wide. She was in a little bit of shadow now, as Lapis was also probably now between her the fire. "Lapis, you're back already! I was starting to get - well - not really starting to get worried, I knew you'd be okay - but its so good to have you back!" Ruby said, probably giving Lapis a big hug, before returning to her spot. "You should have seen it - I beat up that big corrupted gem monster when you got poofed - and Para, she was so cool! She had this device she used to protect your gem with! But I was protecting it for a little while too." Ruby sounded more excited than maybe Para or Lapis had ever heard her. "So, we both protected you! Right Para?" Ruby looked at Para.
