Howlite was in Beach City for the first time in awhile. He had just come back from a crazy bar fight. No one died of course. But he was covered head to toe in knives and bullet wounds. He even had one plunged in the back of his head. He hadn't discovered it was there however. He made his way to the beach.
"I actually miss this place. The quiet. The people. The Crystal Gems who I once called my friends. It's good to be back. Even if it's just for the day. "
He pulled the knives out of his body except the one in his head that he didn't know about. Then he took off his hoodie and went for a relaxing swim. Life was good.
There was a lot of places, that humans generally considered relaxing. But there were only two, that were indeed relaxing for Sapphire. The first was the sky temple - being enveloped by nothing but air could be disconcerting for some, but it felt liberating for Sapphire. The other was beach. Water was the cradle of like here on Earth. And on this place it seemed like the ocean had to limits... just endless water...
This time was no different. Sapphire returned from a mission of some importance, it was a success, but it was far from easy. Sapphire slowly walked on the beach. On any other day this might be really relaxing walk, but he already knew who was swimming in the sea. Last time they spoke Sapphire felt hope for the chaotic gem... was that hope in vane? He just stood on beach, waiting...
After several laps around the shore, Howlite spotted someone. Crystal Sapphire.
"Sapphire? Well I'll be damned."
He swam up to the shore and once he did, he shook the water off like a dog. The knife in his head fell out and hit the ground. He picked it up and stored it in his gem.
"What brings you here? You ain't here for me are you? I don't hurt Crystal Gems anymore. I've left them alone. Speaking of... You see the possible futures right? Is there a possibility where... Ya know."
He hoped Sapphire would understand. He didn't want to say what he was truly thinking. He'd considered joining the Crystal Gems dozens of times but he always dismissed the thought due to its impossibility. He figured if Sapphire showed him it was 100% impossible, he could forget his hopeless crusade.
He replied as he watched him get out of the water. A knife fell out of him... it was most obvious, that he was in some fights recently.
"Our meeting here is completely random, though there was a strong possibility that I will meet you here. I am not worried that you will hurt me, I know exactly where and when I will be shattered, and that day is far in the future."
He said with completely calm voice. "Time is a funny thing... there are only few things, that are set in stone, so to say. I can see futures, where you redeem yourself, but there aren't many. And the more you doubt yourself the less there will be."
He proclaimed. "Chaing one's self isn't easy task, but for it to happen you don't need anyone's approval, you can't do it for others, you have to do it for yourself, because only yourself can do it. But you know that, don't you."
"Yeah yeah I know. Can I tell you something strictly between us? It's possible I may have potentially explored the possibility of coming back. Though as right as you are, you forget that everyone sorta hates me but Flurry. Light don't trust me, Para wants to kill me, any rebel who's heard of me wants me dead. As much as I'd like to come back, I can't. So unless I could believe they'd accept me, then I can't. As much as I'd like to. I don't wanna fight you guys anymore though. All my life I've been pursuing vengeance for what Homeworld did to me. When I met you guys, I didn't trust that you wouldn't eventually do the same. So I helped found the Broken Gems. And now I'm regretting not trusting you guys."
He stared up at the sky.
"Why am I still here? I could've gone to another Galaxy and been fine. Sometimes I wish I never met Flint Quartz. I wish I never met Light. Thanks to them I'm this big mess. Life was so easy before I met Light. Then he changed everything. I ruined his life. Had we never met... He would be way better off."
"Think about it this way... Homeworld betrayed you... hurt you, they don't care about individuals, only about the Empire. You're nothing... I'm nothing, for Diamonds we're all just tools of various importance. Crystal gems... are different. They trust each other, because they don't have anyone else. They put their trust in YOU. And you betrayed them, hurt them... the same way Homeworld betrayed and hurt you. Are you prepared to forgive Homeworld?"
He asked him with completely neutral voice.
"Crystal gems aren't Homeworld... they are able to forgive... but did you gave them any reason to?"
He asked with the same voice. Then he looked straight at Howlite, even made a little smile.
"I'll tell you something that might surprise you - I don't understand Crystal gems... at all. They are completely mystery. Yes, we have the same goal - to save Humans, to save Earth... but I do it to save the Gem Empire... because Empire NEEDS Earth... they need to learn... all gems need to learn. They need to start thinking for themselves... because if Diamonds keep ruling, the Empire is doomed."
He said. Then he turned his gaze at the sea again.
"What I did to them is nothing compared to what Homeworld did to me. I'm not saying what I did was right. But they need to understand why I'm like this. I want you to imagine being born insane. No one to help you. You get put in a small pack who treats you like family. So you have 8 people who care for you. Now imagine every other gem treating you like a freak. Imagine getting beaten up because you're different. Imagine being beaten so bad you almost shatter because you asked a question about the Diamonds. Picture living like that for 1000 years. Then picture yourself on Earth, no family. No friends. You develop a crush on someone and join their cause. How easy could you trust them?"
"How could a noble Sapphire has any idea how it is. Because seeing different paths of future is not something, that could make you insane. I went here, even though I saw a potential future, where you would easily crush my projection. But I decided to come here anyway, because I saw a future, when this converstation might aid you. But don't think you're the only one who suffered. Yes, I'm privilaged gem, yet to the point, where all the gems were afraid to even talk to me."
He explained. He felt sadness deep inside. Even Howlite had 8 gems who cared about him. Sapphire had exactly 0.
"You're searching for excuses. There are others, who suffered as much as you, even worse... and yet they managed to get back to life. Are you willing to forgive Homeworld for what they've done to you? Right now, in this momeent... no excuses, no waiting, no deciding. Because until you do that, you can't move forward with your life. You will always be pulled back by your revenge... and you will never change who you are."
He spread his hands and opened palms of his hands.
"You have two options now... either forgive, and be free to move forward or... plan your revenge with the full knowledge, that you'll never change, that you will perpetuate this cycle of hatred... "
Sapphire blatantly put Howlite before an ultimatum.
"It's your choice... as it always been... but right now you heard the truth... there are excuses to hide behind... just plain old truth."
"But.... How? How do I forgive them for everything? I..."
"Damn it. You're right. You know something? I don't think I give you enough credit sometimes. Perhaps you and I aren't so different after all. I want to forgive. And I want to change. I know exactly what I want. But I don't know how to do any of it. When I first decided to change, I thought it'd be easy. That it would make other people happy. In the process I lost a lot of friends and made a lot of enemies. What is wrong with me? Am I so bad that any attempt to be good will become bad? It's not fair. I want to change and I want to come back. But I don't know how."
A tear rolled down his face.
"I should've known better. Monsters never get a happy ending."
Sapphire moved his hand, like he was trying to swap some kind of annyoing insect from the air.
"Just... like... that..."
He said with distinct pauses between words.
"Who would you like to take revenge against? The Diamonds are far beyond your reach. You would require an army to reach them... and even more to defeat them in battle. No gem is match for them. And all other gems are just pawns... revenge against them would be pointless."
He explained Howlite his own situation. "The fact is, that you don't have to forgive... there are things, that can't be forgiven. But you can swear off the revenge. Once you stop thinking about revenge you might start thinking about how to mend friendships. It must be difficult to stay friendly, when your mind goes back to revenge..."
"All my life my one thought was kill the Diamonds. I was going to kill every loyal who stood in my way. A thousand years I've wasted planning this vengeance with nothing to show for it. And yeah you're right. It is difficult. Back when I was a Crystal Gem, I eventually realized they wouldn't help me get revenge. Then I helped found the Broken Gems. Then my heart switched gears and I no longer act the way a Broken Gem should."
A smile slowly started to spread across his face.
"You know what? I'm gonna come back some day! I don't know when. I still have a few things to do first. But I'll come back! I'll be a Crystal Gem again!"
"I will give you another piece of advice and / or warning. There are some, who will be willing to give you second chance, not all of them mind you, but some. You will have to work hard to earn their forgiveness. But nobody will give you third. If you decide to come back, you should be adamant in your decision. You should know in your heart, so to speak, that what you are doing is the right course of action for you."
There were possibilities, where Howlite would be accepted back, but there weren't many. But in the end it was all on him. Nobody could help him, only he could make that happen. But he also knew, that there were some, who would never accept him back. Trust was peculiar thing... and it was the cornerstone of Crystal gem movement.
"Thanks man. I needed that today. I will come back I swear. I may not know when that will be, but I will return. And this time I'll be the right guy for this rebellion."
He smiled at the Sapphire.
"Maaaybe you'd like to hang out? As friends? We could chill out here if you'd like. I'll try not to be too morbid."
He chuckled. Sapphire never did like his taste for the macabre. But despite that, Howlite kinda liked hanging out with Sapphire. Howlite due to his predatory nature, was good at reading emotions. He could see fear. Anger. Sadness. Pity. All those emotions he red on. But Sapphire was ice cold. He had nothing to feed on. And he liked that. It meant his dark half received no power like it did from other gems.
Sapphire nodded slightly. "Then I am glad I was able to help you, even if it was in this small way. I do believe, that if you set your mind to the task, there is no reason why you shouldn't succeed."
He wasn't sure, if Howlite can do that, but helping him try was the right course of action. If he could turn a powerful enemy, into powerful ally, it would benefit everyone. Not to mention it could probably save several lives, both gem and human.
"While I do appreciate the gesture I am not the one for relaxing activities. I might have left Homeworld behind me, but I still do enjoy to spent my time efficiently. Additionally nobody ever thought I was a good company."
Howlite tilted his head like a dog when Sapphire answered his question. Then he chuckled.
"Sapphire I've never found a friend to be bad company. If you want something productive then we'll do something productive. Give me a moment."
He started thinking of what he could do that would benefit them. He was unsure. Then he smiled as he had an idea.
"Would testing a potential asset to the rebellion count as productive? Think about it. You spend the day with me and when it's over, you'll know first-hand what I'm like. Then when I show up to enlist I would have you as a voucher. I promise you'll be ok. So what'd you say?"

This Roleplay is a prequel to Steven Universe to an extent with some slight retconing and its own progression to the story that will turn out differently to how stuff plays out in the show. Thanks to the message by Rose Quartz several gems are rising up to protect Earth and have labelled themselves as the Crystal Gems. Others on earth are remaining aligned to Homeworld though despite the isolation of Earth from Homeworld
All gems on earth are still stranded, the communication hub is still offline and all the space warps are shattered, it has now been revealed that this is the work of Rose Quartz and her small group known as the Crystal gems. They have rebelled against Homeworld and have chosen to protect the Earth (Trapping themselves on Homeworld to keep the warps down).
Now both sides are fighting among themselves along with fighting against the 'Corruption' a virus is infecting many gems turning most of them into mindless monsters, but those with a stronger will seem to becoming something more sinister.
The Game has changed now. The question has finally been posed, are you against Homeworld or allied with them. Or do you have your own agenda that may or may not been assisted by the ‘Corruption’. Regardless the seeds have been placed down and although it is only the beginning the fight for or against Earth and the corruption has begun. The choice is yours for how it is shaped on the Original Steven Universe Roleplay Site.
