The green gem stood on his balcony, looking out into the storm surrounding his castle. He had his back bent slightly and his arms spread out, his hands on the balcony, supporting his body. His fair blew in the breeze created by the storm, raindrops soaked the balcony, as well as his face. He often liked to watch the storms, finding pleasure in experiencing nature, but today he was in too much of a rage to enjoy storms. He scowled into the distance, thinking about recent events and considering what he should do next.
There was a 'friend' of his he could visit. He hadn't seen the rat in two millennia, but maybe he looked more useful to that wet rag now than he did then. Back when he was weak... He thought about that for a moment. He was weaker back then... but he was also happier. He eventually decided that strength outweighed happiness. If you are weak and happy, then you will be killed and loose your happiness as death takes you. This was the conclusion that Sulfur decided on.
Soon a human approached Sulfur's castle. He stood at 6'4 and weighed in at 350 pounds. He was bald and had dark skin. It was Frank, Howlite's bouncer and right hand man. He had urgent news for the Count. He looked around and saw Sulfur on the balcony.
"Count Sulfur! I wish to speak with you! I have a very urgent matter to discuss with you!"
He waited until Sulfur came down before speaking.
"How ya doing? I'm afraid I have some bad news. You see, Howlite's dead. From my understanding, he was captured by some girl named Saki who then handed him in to Homeworld forces. As far as we know, he's already been executed. I'm sorry to tell you this. You may want to take some time to process this. May I come in? I could keep you company. I used to help Howl when he was depressed. I could help you."
Sulfur left the balcony and approached his main, spiral staircase. He stepped onto it's rail, placing one foot after the other as if on a tightrope. He leaned forward subtly, shifting his weight ahead of him to cause his body to start drifting down the rail. He quickly picked up speed, shifting his weight to balance as he flew down the staircase, arriving at the bottom in seconds. At the end of his ride he leapt into a somersault to prevent falling. He walked out of his door to greet Frank, not at all interested.
However as the man spoke Sulfur's mundane look shifted quickly. First to shock, then to surprise, then to a scheming smirk, then finally to a confused look. He paused for an uncomfortable amount of time. His face returned to his original mundane stare.
"You....cannot help me human. Still, I will give you a drink of alcohol. I'm sure you are mourning the loss much greater than I, having known for longer. Maybe a memory would suit you." Sulfur said calmly. "Howlite is like thin ice. I couldn't trust him. I don't in the least miss him, and if it really was Saki who turned him over then I am extremely impressed with her and proud of her as a father. She would truly be worthy of the title of Sulfur, perhaps even more than I."
Sulfur twitched a bit but motioned toward his castle. "Ask a single question about it and I`ll drive a sword through your throat. I'm only inviting you in for a drink."
"I figured you'd act like this. Which is why I brought something you might be interested in."
He walked into Howlite's room where a laptop sat. He stuck a USB from his pocket into the laptop. He turned to Sulfur as he turned it on.
"I gave Howlite daily psychological evaluations in order to help him stay mentally stable. Before I became a bouncer, I was a psychologist in Nigeria. Howlite gave me a job that paid much higher and still allowed me to help his shattered mind."
The video loaded and Frank gestured for Sulfur to watch. Soon camera footage appeared. Howlite was lying on a couch while Frank sat down in a chair across from him with a notepad.
"Ok Howlite, today's session is very simple. I want you to go back to a time in your life when you were the most at ease."
"It was winter in Empire City. It was dark. Cold. I was still a Crystal Gem then. I came looking for a hunt. But instead I met someone who would change my life forever. His name was Sulfur. And he was my best friend. My brother. Until I drove him away. Not a day goes by that I don't regret it."
He started crying.
"I'm sorry I just-"
"Can we just do this another time?"
The video ended.
"This is one of several. Would you like to see more?"
"If you're just going to show me the weakness of Howlite then you are mocking him in death! He is completely taken apart! Howlite was never like this, this is what he kept hidden. It would be inappropriate for me to watch him suffer! " Sulfur sighed. "I get it now... most people like to see weakness don't they? They feel that they always have to be strongest, and take pleasure in the weakness of others right? So watching another suffer means that you are superior!? Well I am different. I would never be as arrogant as to enjoy the suffering of another. Show me at least some vigor that he had in life! He is dead for petes sake! If I'm going to watch him I want to see him in a state that isn't so close to death itself!"
He leaned back.
"If he really regretted it, he would have come to understand me and would have tried harder to realize his wrongs." Sulfur said quietly. "This... is only proof that he wasn't ambitious enough. He clearly cares, but he failed to act. I want to watch him... doing something productive. You did make progress in your sessions with him... yes?"
"You're not seeing the big picture. Hang on, I'll show you another one."
He pulled up another one. Howlite was in the couch again and Frank was taking notes.
"Ok Howlite, I want you to do a simple excercise. I'm going to hold up some ink boots and I want you to tell me what you see."
Howlite nodded. And as the ink blots where shown, he would react to each one.
"Sulfur. Blu. Flurry. All 3 together. Myself strangling a copy of myself."
"And there it is."
Howlite raised an eyebrow.
"This test is designed to show recurring thoughts in the brain. Meaning that your answers reveal your innermost desires. From my diagnosis, it seems that you desire a family. Compromised of Sulfur, Blu, and Flurry. Now that last response is rather interesting. You strangling yourself is one of two things. It's either that you suddenly became a masochist which I somehow doubt that. The far more likely option is that you are unhappy with who you are."
"What'd you mean?"
"There's nothing wrong with that Howlite. It's perfectly natural to want to change. Let me ask you something, if you could be anything right now, what would it be?"
Howlite thought about it.
Frank raised an eyebrow.
Howlite continued as Frank began taking notes on his answers.
"If I was unhappy, I wouldn't be in this mess. I would've had the balls to go tell Sulfur that I'm sorry. That I should never have treated him the way I did. But I doubt he'd listen to me anyway. I had one good thing in this miserable existence and I lost it when I tried to get more. All my life I had nothing. But Sulfur made me realize what I truly wanted. In my pursuit of happiness, I drove him away. So I wish I was unhappy."
The video ended and Frank looked at Sulfur.
"Now I don't know what he did to you, but it seems to me that he'd take a bullet if it meant making amends with you. You probably didn't know this but every time I did a session with Howlite, it always traced back to you. You mean more to him than you ever could imagine. Let me tell you a story. I had a little brother back in Nigeria. I was faster and smarter than he was but he was a lot stronger. Anyway, we were closer than anyone I've known. Then one day my brother met a girl. She was just an infant. I told him to abandon the child. He said no. We fought and I killed him along with the child. Not a day goes by I don't think about it. I see the same thing with you and Howlite. I'd tell you not to make my mistake, but your kid beat you to the punch. I hope that God has mercy on the old man's soul. He did such great things."
"Howlite may be pained and regret his actions, but feelings without action are dead. Howlite did care, but not enough to do anything about the pit he dug himself into. He didn't bring me White Spinel's shards, and therefore was unable to force himself to do what he most desired. Someone who is unable to do what they want to do is indecisive and will never amount to anything. Howlite isn't who I thought he was. We aren't alike in the least. It was his mistake to care about me. Unlike Howlite, Saki has shown loyalty in doing something that my emotions prevented me from doing. True I did care for him, but he was a liability. I can never trust someone like Howlite... Saki has proved to be very capable." Sulfur paused and looked at the floor. "Tell me what great things he did. I didn't recruit him so that he could do great things. I recruited him so that we could be strong together. He weakened his values, and crippled mine as he died. Still... if he was willing to betray me for something... tell me about his legacy."
"Where to begin? Well for starters, every employee of his was incarcerated before he hired us. Myself included. He gave us all second chances. He helped the City as well. Did you know that Howlite only kept half of his money? He was actually quite the philanthropist. He donated to dozens of societies mostly mental hospitals and schools. He did so much. It's extraordinary to think that someone like that could come from such a tortured past. Not to mention he's been teaching that little kid he always hangs out with. Teaching her to be a marksman. He also planned to teach that girlfriend of his how to sneak properly. Howlite was perhaps the kindest person I've ever met. But God have mercy on any poor souls who messed with his family."
Sulfur didn't seem impressed. He stood and crossed his arms.
"He does seem like quite the philanthropist. Perhaps he was kind and you all are grateful. I am not kind... nor do I respect acts of kindness. I only value loyalty and determination... both were things that Howlite lacked in our cause. Saki knew that I didn't trust him, and she probably turned him in because she wanted to help me. If you resent her for this then may God have mercy on your soul... because you will not have my grace." Sulfur said. "I don't see what you are trying to do... but please get out of my castle. I am a busy gem and I can't waste time with humans."
Sulfur rubbed his eyes for some reason and motioned toward the doors.
"Yes I understand. I just... I just can't believe he's down for the count."
Suddenly the doors flew open and Howlite was standing there. His eyes were black and his teeth were pointed. His left eye was gouged out and his lip was busted. A shard of metal was lodged in his neck. His entire body was covered in blood. He basically looked like a torture victim. He managed a weak smile and horrible chuckle.
"You wish I went down that easy."
He pulled the metal shard from his neck.
"Well I'm gonna go take a shower. And get a drink. Stars it's been so long since my last drink. Hope my Vodka's still there."
He limped his way towards his bedroom and came out with a bottle in his hand.
Sulfur didn't turn toward the door when he heard the voice. His body quaked as he slowly turned toward him. As Sulfur turned his hands were over all of his face except his eyes, which could be seen between his bent fingers. As Howlite left Sulfur straightened up and tried to calm down, taking a few deep breaths. He felt such relief...and disappointment, at the same time. It was unlike anything he had ever felt. He slowly craned his head toward Howlite as the gem returned with his alcohol.
"What is it...Howlite?" Sulfur asked with an unreadable tone. His eyes showed no emotion, yet seemed full of some sort of ferocity or passion at once. Yet unless one really stared would they see the bizarre expression he was wearing.
Howlite sighed as he headed towards the shower expecting Sulfur to follow. He took a swig then spoke.
"Boss I was on Homeworld. And in that time I have come to a realization."
He stepped into the shower and turned it on then closed the curtain as he cleaned himself.
"Turns out I'm not a defect at all. I'm a prototype weapon. I suppose that makes sense but I felt horrible learning this. Apparently my Alpha created me in some mad scramble for power. He literally made me to be his weapon. So now I've decided something. Slaughter Homeworld. Use their own weapon against them. Unfortunately I can't do this alone meaning I'll need some help."
He stepped out and grabbed a towel then dried himself off. He wrapped the towel around his waist and entered his room. He began to put on a fresh suit.
Sulfur leaned outside of the shower as he washed himself. Sulfur said nothing for a while, only listened as Howlite spoke. After a while he became silent. He waited until Howlite put on his suit to start talking.
"If that's the case then there's nothing common between us." He said grimly. "I have come to accept that I myself am a defect. If Sulfurs were meant to fight then I would have been put in Yellow Diamond's army...or even White Diamond's. Saki had all of the perfect conditions for forming. There should be no defects in her design... So I am forced to assume that there's a reason she's yellow... because a Sulfur isn't green. Still...that doesn't explain why all eight Sulfurs made on homeworld were green..."
Sulfur sighed and put his hands on his hips.
"As tempting as your offer makes me... it's foolish. How are we to attack homeworld, I've fought them before, Quartz knights. They are alright alone...but their numbers are overwhelming. " Sulfur mumbled. "I agree that I will help you fight, but I want to remain as hidden as possible... and if I'm discovered... at least I used my existence to do something worthwhile."

This Roleplay is a prequel to Steven Universe to an extent with some slight retconing and its own progression to the story that will turn out differently to how stuff plays out in the show. Thanks to the message by Rose Quartz several gems are rising up to protect Earth and have labelled themselves as the Crystal Gems. Others on earth are remaining aligned to Homeworld though despite the isolation of Earth from Homeworld
All gems on earth are still stranded, the communication hub is still offline and all the space warps are shattered, it has now been revealed that this is the work of Rose Quartz and her small group known as the Crystal gems. Now both sides are fighting among themselves along with fighting against the 'Corruption' a virus is infecting many gems turning most of them into mindless monsters, but those with a stronger will seem to becoming something more sinister.
The Game has changed now. The question has finally been posed, are you against Homeworld or allied with them. Or do you have your own agenda that may or may not been assisted by the ‘Corruption’.
