Name:
Obsidian
Appeared Gender:
Female
Appeared Age:
Likely somewhere between late 20s/early 30s
Gemstone:
Obsidian, in a polished sphere
Gemstone Location:
The base of her neck, nested in the notch between her collarbones
Faction:
Homeworld
Corrupted:
Not corrupted
Appearance:
Obsidian is a rather tall and muscularly built gem. While not standing quite at the height of a Quartz, she has a large presence much like a Jasper which could be intimidating to some. The appearance of her skin is dark in shades similar to coal with silver hair that noticeably contrasts. She wears a black homeworld-styled tunic accented by pink diamonds on both her stomach and knees, and she is equipped with brown-tinted armor on her shoulders, arms, and legs that appears translucent at certain angles.
Personality:
Obsidian, first and foremost, is a soldier and a defender. She was built along with other Obsidian soldiers to act as the dispensable front line of defense, requiring solid, steadfast focus, immediate obedience for orders, and the independent drive to carry out those orders despite the situation around them. Obsidian’s role amongst the Homeworld system has formed her to be very dry and mild. She finds expressiveness difficult and is hesitant to warm up to others because of the very impermanent nature of her existence. She is quick to protect others and selfless, to a fault. However, whereas other Obsidian soldiers were reckless and ran out to meet foes head-on, Obsidian was watchful and observant of what she was fighting.
Likes:
Quiet atmospheres, the varying creatures of different planets, fulfilling goals/missions
Dislikes:
Mindlessness, unnecessary fighting and destroying, restlessness, impermanence
Fears:
Fractures in her form, failure, loss, being shattered
Weapon:
Obsidian’s weapon of choice is a large black and silver battle axe – an axe head attached to a long pole with a spiked point at the end. The weapon is a little longer than she is tall and appears incredibly weighty.
Ability 1:
Protective Energy Shield
Obsidian can create a charcoal-tinted translucent energy shield in front of her, circular in shape and curving in around the edges (think: the shape of a contact), and moves with her as she moves. It is used to block physical attacks for a general duration of two posts and is of capable of withstanding a great amount of force, correlating to her skill/power. The size of this shield also varies based on her skill/power, but it most often is roughly the size of her body. The cooldown of this ability is two posts.
Ability 2:
Penetrable Fortress
Homeworld spared all the expense possible when creating Obsidians to allow more resources for the Jaspers and the Quartz. Obsidian can create walls of spiky black rock out of the ground, roughly scaling to her height and extending five feet across. The cooldown of this ability is three posts. The cost of this ability is compromised durability. Obsidian's form chips, cracks, and fractures, and if she is poofed and must reform, that damage is still there, reflected in the form of her gem.
Fusions: None
History:
Obsidian was created on Homeworld, in bulk, along with many other Obsidian soldiers made just like her, about midway through gem civilization. While Obsidian gems occupy various roles within the Homeworld caste system, not all are created equal nor are created with comparable quality. Obsidian frontline soldiers - Obsidian Cut 6 - were made in bulk to serve as protectors of gem colonies in construction and were used most often to fight off large native beasts to these planets as Homeworld used the planet's resources to build spires and create Kindergartens all across the sector. Obsidian soldiers were commonly fighters not only as their role but also their beings. Unlike a Ruby soldier where the team and following the captain is important, Obsidians are fighting on their own with the mission of keeping the Kindergarten secure at all costs. This often manifested in examples such as reckless behavior to confirm the kill of the beast and disregard for the well-being of other Obsidian soldiers in the platoon.
This particular Obsidian, identified as Facet 4X9 Cut 6VT, has moved planets more than 100 times. She has only ever known a couple Obsidian soldiers in her platoon at a time, and after five or so planets relocated to, she never kept any acquaintances for more than an Earth year or so. She shared the very focused attitude of the majority of Obsidian soldiers, but there was an emptiness within her despite this fact. Without really understanding many of her emotional responses, she took to observing the wildlife and various creatures on the planets they arrived to. She both saw something strange within them and also related, in similarly strange and different ways. On an occasion or two, she might have been joined on the ship by small insectoid-type creatures but it was more often than not a short-lived relationship.
When the initial colonization of Earth began, sets of Obsidian soldiers were shipped off. It seemed like a fairly similar job, and it was this Obsidian’s 122nd planet to guard while the Gems drained its resources. Of course, the Rebellion came, and the Obsidian soldiers, seen as lesser than 'real' Gems, were some of the first lines of defense against the Crystal Gems. Many of her platoon was shattered in the fighting, some were poofed and left mostly intact, and the majority were taken back by the Homeworld gems. This particular Obsidian, poofed during the fighting, remained left behind at the Prime Kindergarten. While she reformed as quickly as she could, the fighting had ceased there and the Kindergarten appeared deserted. She remained in wait for an ungodly amount of time for Homeworld authorities to arrive and instruct her, bring her back, send her out, anything. When no one came, she waited. When there were no beasts to fight, she waited. When there was seemingly no life around the Kindergarten, she waited. And when a small blue gem flip-flapped her way out of the Kindergarten, she waited. Then time passed. Then she realized. And then she left and went searching.
